I don't think your info is correct Dane. Yes the program itself is
accessible and has been for some time. The setup however is not. You can
find buttons like next or cancel but the text cannot be read even with mouse
or jaws curosr.

Well. I did pick up a tuner today. And had my sighted friend help me.
Needless to say I still cannot watch tv on my pc. I have not given up hope.
Now the setup want an IR controler to be part of the whole package. I'm
losing my mind. Oh well if I can get this thing working it will all be
worth.

Good luck. I feel as if I should have emphasized to make sure you were
buying a model with a tv tuner already in it.

Good luck with getting it installed and working with the Media Center

You would think so, but I think you need to separately order either an

see anything from Haugepauge, Pinnacle or the like?

If you need to get a card or usb device make sure it is compatible with
Media Center.

Since you ordered from Dell, you should be able to hop on the phone and
confirm what's in the box.

Good luck. Sorry for the problems!

Re: media center

2010-01-31 Thread Gianluca Apollaro

Hi Brett,
Which tuner did you pick up? Why do you want to use MediaCenter as
software? I have a pinnacle tuner and its software is really accessible
with jaws. I can record in .mpg or .ts if I like and I finally managed
to find a software which demuxes the separate streams. I don't like the
software MediaCenter first of all because I don't know if it is
accessible, and secondly I don't like the format it records in. Then
there are good softwares that work good enough with tv-tuner like altDVB
or DVBViewer.

Hope this helps

In thinking about your situation, could it be an HDMI connection rather

You would think so, but I think you need to separately order either an
internal or usb tv tuner card if it's not listed in the specs. Do you see

If you need to get a card or usb device make sure it is compatible with

Since you ordered from Dell, you should be able to hop on the phone and

Anyway I guess now I should figure out if I'm going to throw my money away

High Brett,
They all work pretty much the same way.
It doesn't really matter what kind of a computer and or TV tuner card you
have, they are designed to do what it is intended to do regardless of what.
The only thing you have to watch out for, is the blind user friendliness of
it.

But with some TV tuner cards, the lack there is of it.
My best regards.

If the PC has an S-video out jack and or composite video out jack or HDMI

PC.
And or, you can watch from that same PC via the GVI out jack that is also

Yes, when you enter Media Center, you click on My TV. That brings up
options for watching live, watching a previously recorded show or the
Guide. The Guide is a table arrangemnt of times and channels. You can
arrow along a channel for up to a few days and clicking on a show in
the future will give you the option to record a single episode or the
series at the same time every day.

On the other access, you can find the time you're interested in and
arrow up or down and see what's on each channel. Reading the times is
a little more difficult, but you can get the hand of it.

In addition to the My TV option, there's My Music, DVD, Photoos,
and a few more.

Initial set up may require some sighted help especially if you're
setting up a surround sound system.

I use a 15 Phillips tv as my monitor. I generally leave it set so
that the Media Center runs through it. However, by pushing a couple of
buttons on the tv, I can use the tv independently of the computer.

The card that came with mine is a single source card so you can watch
one show and record one other channel at the same time. I believe you
can get cards that allow you to record a couple of things at the same
time while watching a third.

Recording shows takes up lots of space so get a system with as large a
hard drive as you can and back up the shows or move them to another
drive so they don't record over themselves!

Once a show is recorded, you can edit out commercials using a program
like Vide Redo Suite or Lifextender. The second is only availabe of
Vista so far as I know.

I probably record three or four shows a day for my kids and they
accummulate up to about 50 shows before they start recording over
themselves. So once a week I either edit the commercials out and save
the resultant file to a dvd or to another drive or move some of the
recorded shows until I can find the time for editing.

I don't know about how well this works in VISTA or Windows 7 machines,
but in my XP Media Center, it's pretty flawless.

Let me know if you have more questions. Sorry that I'm responding from
a different address.

The post-purchase tv tuner card will come with some software to interface
between the computer and the tuner card. This is for scheduling, tuning,
etc. Media Center performs the same function. The software that comes
with the tuner card, may or may not, (often not( be accessible. The
software in Media Center is pretty much compatible.

When Microsoft first introduced the concept of the Media Center, the
software and hardware were tightly bundled and compatible with each
other. Now In VISTA and Windows 7 Media Center comes as a pre-installed
component in the operating ystem whether it has a tuner card or not. The
challenge is to make sure that the tv tuner card you get, whether it's
to be installed internally or connect through USB, is to make sure that
its operation is compatible with Media Center.

Hope that helps. You're getting pretty close to the end of my

One additional point. I understand that online television services like
ATT's U-verse or Verizon's FIOS may not work so well with Media Center.
It's something to do with how they bring in only a single signal at a

If you're using Windows Media Center, I don't think you have to worry too
much about the card so long as it's compatible with Media Center. The real
action's with the software. As I understand it, the problem with some cards
like Hauppauge is when you try to rely on the provided software instead of
Windows.

Even with Windows, the initial set up is best accomplished with some sighted

But RADIO SHACK has a slew of different TV tuner cards that you can choose

Witch means, they plug in to a slot on your computer's mother board.
As far as price range goes, they run from $20 to $300.
I don't know how blind user friendly those TV tuner cards are, but you may

Yes, when you enter Media Center, you click on My TV. That brings up
options for watching live, watching a previously recorded show or the
Guide. The Guide is a table arrangemnt of times and channels. You can
arrow along a channel for up to a few days and clicking on a show in the
future will give you the option to record a single episode or the series
at the same time every day.

On the other access, you can find the time you're interested in and arrow
up or down and see what's on each channel. Reading the times is a little
more difficult, but you can get the hand of it.

In addition to the My TV option, there's My Music, DVD, Photoos, and
a few more.

Initial set up may require some sighted help especially if you're setting
up a surround sound system.

I use a 15 Phillips tv as my monitor. I generally leave it set so that
the Media Center runs through it. However, by pushing a couple of buttons
on the tv, I can use the tv independently of the computer.

The card that came with mine is a single source card so you can watch one
show and record one other channel at the same time. I believe you can get
cards that allow you to record a couple of things at the same time while
watching a third.

Recording shows takes up lots of space so get a system with as large a
hard drive as you can and back up the shows or move them to another drive
so they don't record over themselves!

Once a show is recorded, you can edit out commercials using a program like
Vide Redo Suite or Lifextender. The second is only availabe of Vista so
far as I know.

I probably record three or four shows a day for my kids and they
accummulate up to about 50 shows before they start recording over
themselves. So once a week I either edit the commercials out and save the
resultant file to a dvd or to another drive or move some of the recorded
shows until I can find the time for editing.

I don't know about how well this works in VISTA or Windows 7 machines, but
in my XP Media Center, it's pretty flawless.

Let me know if you have more questions. Sorry that I'm responding from a
different address.

RE: MEDIA CENTER COMPUTER

2010-01-08 Thread Blackwell, Clifford
Back to my work computer!

I watch through the computer monitor. Although as I said in an earlier post,
the monitor can double as a stand alone tv.

The set up routine in the Windows XP Media Center doesn't read very well
especially in the area of setting up speakers. There are some other things
that don't read, but selecting the default can get you through. As I recall,
there is one thing you need to check for getting the Guide updated that if not
checked tosses you out and I needed some help with that.

I use Jaws so I don't know how set up might go with Windows Eyes or System
Access. It's been around a year since I had to set up anything.

If you go with a Windows Media Center, remember that it's fairly tightly bound
to the hardware and software that comes bundled. It comes with a version of
Sonic and Nero for some of the cd and dvd related functions. When I first got
mine, I tried to load an old copy of Roxio Easy CD Creater and it turned the
computer into a jabbering paperweight. I had to do a reinstall from the
restore disks to get things right. However, I've since added cd burners like
Express burn and other programs without a problem. I guess make sure that
you're backed up before you try adding something.

Good luck. I really like and enjoy my Media Center and it has been great to be
able to record things while away for a weekend, etc.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

High Brett,
I can't answer all the other questions for you, but I can answer the last
one for you.
If the PC has an S-video out jack and or composite video out jack or HDMI
out jack, you can watch the videos on any TV set that's hooked up to the PC.
And or, you can watch from that same PC via the GVI out jack that is also on
the mane video card via the computer monitor.

play dvds, I can't say that the interface for other functions isn't a
little clunky from time to time.

Re: MEDIA CENTER COMPUTER

2010-01-07 Thread Ford Blackwell
Yes, when you enter Media Center, you click on My TV. That brings up
options for watching live, watching a previously recorded show or the Guide.
The Guide is a table arrangemnt of times and channels. You can arrow along
a channel for up to a few days and clicking on a show in the future will
give you the option to record a single episode or the series at the same
time every day.

On the other access, you can find the time you're interested in and arrow up
or down and see what's on each channel. Reading the times is a little more
difficult, but you can get the hand of it.

In addition to the My TV option, there's My Music, DVD, Photoos, and a
few more.

Initial set up may require some sighted help especially if you're setting up
a surround sound system.

I use a 15 Phillips tv as my monitor. I generally leave it set so that the
Media Center runs through it. However, by pushing a couple of buttons on
the tv, I can use the tv independently of the computer.

The card that came with mine is a single source card so you can watch one
show and record one other channel at the same time. I believe you can get
cards that allow you to record a couple of things at the same time while
watching a third.

Recording shows takes up lots of space so get a system with as large a hard
drive as you can and back up the shows or move them to another drive so they
don't record over themselves!

Once a show is recorded, you can edit out commercials using a program like
Vide Redo Suite or Lifextender. The second is only availabe of Vista so far
as I know.

I probably record three or four shows a day for my kids and they accummulate
up to about 50 shows before they start recording over themselves. So once a
week I either edit the commercials out and save the resultant file to a dvd
or to another drive or move some of the recorded shows until I can find the
time for editing.

I don't know about how well this works in VISTA or Windows 7 machines, but
in my XP Media Center, it's pretty flawless.

Let me know if you have more questions. Sorry that I'm responding from a
different address.

One additional point. I understand that online television services like
ATT's U-verse or Verizon's FIOS may not work so well with Media Center.
It's something to do with how they bring in only a single signal at a time.

That's a lot of valuable information. I think I might actually watch tv more
if i could record like the rest of the world has been for seven or eight
years.
so the software recognizes your cable box or how does it work as far as
connecting up with your cable provider / hardware?

Hi.

I don't recall all of the shortcuts but here is a list of what I know. If
you do a Google search for media center keyboard shortcuts, you will find a
list on the MicroSoft site somewhere.

Alt windows key enter: Open media center from anywhere in Windows.

From within the Media Center application...
Control g: go to Guide
Control t: Go to Live TV.
Control r: Start recording:
Control p: Pause TV
Control f: Skip forward
Control b: Skip backward
Number keys change channels
Volume 70: F10
Volume down: F9

There are moor of them, but I use the remote most of the time. I don't
know
if your remote is the same as mine however.

On mine, there are 4 buttons located just above the number pad that will
take you directly to recorded material, program guide, live TV, etc.

The program guide is fairly accessible in that you can move around within
it
and see what is on, and if you want, choose to record something.

Hope this helps somewhat.

if you are aware of some text that describe the buttons of the remote, or
how to use it to watch DVD, listen to music, watch TV (Yes, I have an

please let me know.

This media center app seems powerful especially with the remote.
I hope it's usable by blind people in some way because it looks quite cool.

The tuner came with this Sony Vaio system and I haven't really checked
device manager to see what it is. The system came wit the tuner, remote,
and IR receiver with IR blasters.

I don't know
if your remote is the same as mine however.

On mine, there are 4 buttons located just above the number pad that will
take you directly to recorded material, program guide, live TV, etc.

The program guide is fairly accessible in that you can move around within it
and see what is on, and if you want, choose to record something.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Hello,

I am the proud owner of a Toshiba Qosmio laptop

this comes pre installed with windows media center edition.

I'd like to know if there are keyboard shortcuts for the media center
application itself, also, I'd like to know how to use the media center
specific remote

if you are aware of some text that describe the buttons of the remote, or
how to use it to watch DVD, listen to music, watch TV (Yes, I have an
intagrated TV tuner inside) etc.

please let me know.

This media center app seems powerful especially with the remote.
I hope it's usable by blind people in some way because it looks quite cool.

Subject: Media Center Question

We now have the XP Media Center operating system on one or our
computers, and I'm wondering what I can do with it. Thus far, the only
real advantage I can see is that I got it on sale and therefore paid
nothing extra to choose it over XP professional. When trying to
configure it, I found that it could not orient itself to our sattlelite
system, which is okay, as I'm using the ATI TV card as a work around.
Still, I wonder why Media Center doesn't seem up to the challenge.
Beyond that I'n wondering what it can do for me that more traditional
operating systems cannot accomplish.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Larry

For media computers, why not get a custom built one?

How accessible are the systems described in the article below? I can
see lots of benefits, but have doubts about accessibility.

 With a PC's Power, That's Entertainment
 By TIM GNATEK

ersonal computers increasingly fill home entertainment needs. And why
not? They are already the repositories for digital photos, music and
video collections. With an attached TV or radio tuner and digital video
recorder and encoder, they can replace nearly every entertainment device
 in the house.

But the demands placed on machines to store large video files and
process them quickly can be too much for standard home computers.

To fill the need, a new breed of multimedia systems is entering the
market. Not only can they record, store and manage music, movies and
television shows, but they can also showcase them on high-definition
screens and in surround-sound audio, all with a click of the remote.

Most multimedia machines come with powerful Pentium or Athlon
processors, the latest graphics cards, FM radio and television tuners
(sometimes more than one, so users can watch one channel while recording
another), DVD recorders and enough memory and hard-drive space to store
and play back hours of high-quality programming. Many also incorporate
the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system, which
adds specialized multimedia features to Windows XP.

Because the entertainment PC's are designed for living rooms, they come
with wireless keyboards, mice and hand-held remotes for controlling
functions far from the computer. Nearly every major computer maker is
now producing entertainment PC's as laptops and desktops, and even as
horizontally designed machines that resemble stereo components.

 For the Desktop

One line of desktops, the Vaio RA series of digital studio PC's from
Sony (starting at $1,799), presents bulked-up computers in tall, black
cases that enclose Intel Pentium 4 processors, one gigabyte of
random-access memory, and at least 320 gigabytes of storage. A 5.1
surround-sound speaker system comes with the packages, providing
cinematic audio entertainment. To keep unwanted noise to a minimum, the
computers use a liquid cooling system, rather than a standard fan, to
carry heat away from the processors.

Though the media computers can be priced higher than average machines,
shoppers do not have to wait for less expensive models to come to
market. This month, Gateway began selling a $1,000 media computer, the
832GM Media Center PC, which includes a Pentium 4 processor, a gigabyte
of memory, a 250-gigabyte hard drive, TV and FM tuners, a DVD+/- RW
drive, a speaker package, a wireless keyboard, two-button mouse and
 remote.

 Laptops

Multimedia machines also come as laptops, and their thin profile may be
preferable in small apartments or dorm rooms, or for users who prefer
the small footprint of a portable device.

One such computer, the Toshiba Qosmio, balances the portability of a
laptop with the features one might expect from its larger cousins. Its
 premier model, the G15 ($2,599), has a 17-inch TruBrite liquid-crystal
display, which offers a clear picture from peripheral angles as well as
head-on. Built-in Harmon Kardon speakers mimic surround sound to lend a
richer tone than is usually found in laptops. To get to the
entertainment faster, CD's, DVD's and television programming can start
in a powered-down mode without booting the whole operating system.

From Dell, the Inspiron XPS Gen 2 ($2,349 with promotional discount),
intended more as a portable gaming station, has a similar 17-inch
display and, like the Qosmio, provides quick access to media content
when the computer is shut down. It is also the first laptop to come with
the new, powerful NVIDIA 256MB GeForce Go 6800 Ultra graphics card,
capable of processing feats like playing one high-definition program on
the laptop screen while simultaneously showing another on an external
 monitor. For the Living Room

Hewlett-Packard was an early purveyor of computers running Windows
Media Center when it was released in 2002. Today, in addition to desktop
and laptop models, it markets a system designed for the living room.

The HP z545 digital entertainment center ($1,799 with rebate at
hpshopping.com) features a horizontal brushed-black aluminum case that
more resembles a stereo component than a PC. The system comes with a
