With this approach, I think both the size of mails and the amount of members would reduced significantly. I am not saying I would challenge your authority though. 8-( regards, Alan Chan Ok, people, listen up. This off-topic trash has gone on long enough, and I have been forced to take draconian measures. You are permitted one off-topic post per week. The posting of a second one will result in a stern warning letter, and posting three will result in being kicked off this list permanently. You are also limited to two on-topic messages per week. I'm sick of having to read 100+ messages per day. It wasn't like this back in the good old days when Pentax ran things. So shape up or ship out. In about a month I'll be introducing a new aspect to the list. I call it "PDML Survivor." Each week we will vote one of our list members off the list. This should keep the bad elements out of the list, as well as provide amusement for the rest of us. Enjoy! P.S. I will be the judge and jury of off-topic posts. If I don't like what you have to say, or if you just piss me off, you're history. -- Douglas Forrest Brewer Ashwood Lake Photography [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.alphoto.com _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. ALL limited lenses are designed like this, to maximize performance. Not the new 31mm f1.8 Limited. It's designed to be a landscape-only type of lens, so its focus is locked at infinity. Got me, too. I reread it twice Chris and still didn't catch it when all along it was right there in front of us in the address. I didn't get to read the pdml yesterday, so I'm sitting here in the office waiting to get right down to work, when I think, "Yeah. I am a little tired of 100 posts per day. Maybe it wouldn't be too bad having some limits, even if it meant there wouldn't be these great threads about the merits of one film versus another, one lens versus another, or one scanner versus another, or cancerous beef versus MacDonald's stockholders." Then Doug pops up and bursts my little bubble. Sheesh, I haven't had to deal with this kind of shenanigans at work for a few years. No wonder I was still asleep on the job. Hi, My lot for this months gallery were images from: Jens Bladt - Painting Beauty Derek Zukowski - Heavy Cotty - Waitress, London,1980 Jens Bladt - Painting Beauty I reallylike the mix of colours and textures. I like the fact that there is forground interest with the masks as well as the colourful backdrops. The human interest really keeps the image going, she looks as though she wouldn't be anywhere else even if she could be.Maybe a lower perspective would have added more to the photograph rather than the slightly downwardangle. An upwardperspective may also have avoided the highlight in the bottom left corner which is distracting.A photo to be proud of. Derek Zukowshi - Heavy I especially like the feeling of movement within this shot, you can almost hear those power chords being strummed. Although the shot is interesting there is something missing that makes my eye wander and never really settle. If I place my hand over the shadow in the bottom left corner the picture seems to be given more depth and vitality. Only my opinion but it is usually the little things that stand out. Cotty - Waitress, London, 1980 I really like this picture, it proves that you don't need eye contact to make astrong portrait. Love the moody lighting, it could be a picture from the fifties or sixties. I would love to see an identical picture but in colour just to see the difference, my guess is that it would lose much of its appeal. I just wonder what she is thinking. I just wish there wasn't quite as much of a highlight in the top right of the picture although it does contrast well with the dark top left and that there were a few wisps of smoke just to give the image a bit of life. Well composed and well taken with the available light. Paul

I've been in several times and made bids but anyone noticed this: Ever since we changed the clock to summertime the search results are 1 hour out. i.e. an item showing 5 minutes left on the search results screen has actually got 1 hour and 5 minutes to run when you go to the auction page. (maybe another UK PDML-er can confirm this?) Because they don't show in search screen when ended it now doesn't show anything with less than an hour to run. Makes last minute bidding impossible. According to Ebay's announcement board, they are having problems from a bug in Microsoft's Visual C++. April PUG comments - my assignment.
From my assignment - which would have been done earlier, but my dog ate it! 1. "Sunrise Mist" - by Collin Brendemuehl, Ohio, USA To be honest, my first impression was one of no impression. It just seemed so flat. Once I really looked at it and positioned my monitor more favorably I really enjoyed it. Definitely shows the disadvantages of computer as opposed to print viewing. I had to look at the film used since it seems almost lacking in color. It reminds me of some of my shots taken amidst the fog. Most memorably my latest trip to Utah. I always tend to enjoy photos that remind me of places I have been, or situations I have been in. I enjoy the central placing of the trees and sun and do not object to the bottom being dark, it counters the amount of sky in the scene. It is almost a built-in border. It is a very soothing scene and one that would definitely be a good poster to help relax. Great shot! 2. "Maroondah Reservoir" - by Bill Gekas Good shot! It is often that I have to wait around to get the people out of my shots. It seems that people dally around more as they see me with the camera trying to get my shot - at least it seems like it. I like the way the path is lighter than the surroundings and leads the viewer's eyes into the picture. Some would complain about the loss of tree detail but I like it. The wall is the issue here and you have highlighted it just fine. I like the included sky. I tried cropping it out and definitely did not like the ensuing images. I cannot think of anything I would do differently on this. "Rails" - by Cyril Marion, France A beautiful capture of the moment I would say. It shows movement and I like the steadiness of the rails. It brings to mind some of the trips I have taken by train, though most of these have been underground. I must admit though, that it does nothing for me as a picture. But then again, do all photos need to? One thing I do not like about it is the central (vertical) placing of the end of the rails. It actually would convey more to me if there was less sky in the picture. I think it is the brightness of it that overpowers the rest of the image. All in all a nice shot and again one that conveys a moment in time that will surely bring back the memories of the holidays. Hi guys, I just got an e-mail from Dave. According to him the grip would be avalailable in 8 weeks or so. It has a vertical release, have a look http://wdcamengineering.com/pentax.htm It looks good. Re: New Pentax S-1, MZ-1 and MZ-4(2?)
Car magazines are much more aggressive about getting information out about future models than photo magazines. They also seemed less tied to car companys than photo magazines are to camera companys and thus are more critical of the car products they test. It is not unusual at all for them to really rip a car during a test if it doesn't meet their expectations. When was the last time you saw that in a photo mag test of a camera! When reading photo mag tests one has to learn to read between the lines. DG At 01:10 AM 4/1/01 +0200, you wrote: Doug wrote: This will never happen. PUG comments for M.Smith, T.Ueda, J.Buhler
Hi, When I accepted Chris' idea, I imagined myself talking about the great pictures that I always see and like in the PUG... but this time I have also some objections, and justify why is maybe more difficult. I'll try to explain it good luck understanding my English, by the way :-) Mike Smith's Autumn II: Positive: The light describing the borders of the main branch and side leafs. Also the color of the leaf itself. Composition also works for me. Negative: I think that the main problem with this picture, as Mike says, is the 'digitalization'. I liked it much more when I saw it at work with the laptop, when I was able to move the TFT screen up and down (which changes contrast). Apart from that, I don't like the (unavoidable) shadow of the right leaf. I think it is disturbing. Also, I would like to see better the side leafs, but again, maybe the original shows them better. This assumption somehow limits my comments. Take Ueda's Rain: Positive: I like the idea of showing the contrast between mud and metal, especially with this dark color. I don't identify the brand and type of the car, but it seems very rounded and 'photogenic'. Negative: mainly the point of view. Personally, I would have centered the picture on the bonnet, or maybe a front view... I am not sure. The main problem is that, in my opinion, the raindrop/metal contrast is not the center of the picture. The blinker is distracting, and at the bottom left corner seems to be a little bit burned by flash light. This is distracting to me too. (As you can see I get distracted easily... :-) ). I personally don't like flash too much, I would have used available light if possible, or a more uniform source than a built-in flash. Juan Buhler's No Park: I have to confess that it took a lot to me to understand Juan's submission. Since I ran into the picture without reading the title, I didn't even realize that there was something written. The contrast settings of my monitor at home didn't help either. I saw a grey non contrasted picture while starting to think: 'Juan is going to kill me...' Now it works better for me. I begin to like the desolation and abandoned state shown in the picture, along with the texture of the ground. Why I took so much to me to get it (apart from my screen settings at home)? Maybe because I didn't have enough sense of scale. Yes, there are a couple of car tracks to compare, but they are not immediately visible. Maybe because I don't identify the concrete object with the 'No Park' sentence written on it Is this something typical in the US that is not used in Spain? (you can probably answer me, Juan, since you know my country). Also, to complete the series of distracting things, there is something at the top left corner that could have been cropped. I am thinking if a wider angle would help expressing the isolation of the object and also to relate it to other objects / sizes surrounding it. Well, that's all. Of course I expect and welcome comments to my comments, and please, don't be too hard with my May submission :-) Jaume __ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! RE: Cable Release for modern Pentaxes.
I didnt say that, Alin did! And by the way the F65 he was referrering to is a N***n! I just dont know why the shutter button doesnt have a thread to allow a mechnical release to push the button in addition to use of cable switch F. In the UK this is a damned expensive cable release and many amateur users would baulk at the idea of spending 30 ($50ish) on a remote release! Your points are quite reasonable to me. I tried some shots with this subject, and thought this angle of view would most highlight the round shape of the car. I admit that the flash was a little bit noisy... I also tried a long time shot with a tripod, but got no good result. BTW, this "photogenic" car is a Mini from Britain. :-) Thank you again for your comments. I'll try a better shot the next time!! It is gorgeous; it's also really expensive and very heavy. An f4 would make more sense. Personally, I think a non Power Zoom version would sell quite well. The FA* is very expensive when compared to third party alternatives and far bulkier. Don't get me wrong - it's one of my favourite lenses, but I need to have a reason to bring it along, I'll never carry it 'just in case' like I will with a 400/f.5, 100/2.8, 28-70/f2.8, etc. It's as bad as the 55/3.5 for the 6x7. dave - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Bovine Growth Hormone, Bad Milk Lesions
Hi Steve, I remember in the 70's (maybe before that) when the star Aldeberan was one of the first stars suspected if having planets because of it's wobble effect across the sky. My choice of the word observation in my earlier post was probably a poor one... It is this wobble method of detection that I was referring to, that 20 years ago was only strong enough to be considered possible evidence, but today is headlined as proof. So, I don't doubt that the wobble method is scientifically based. I am just perplexed by the strength of the conclusion that are drawn now versus then. Granted, extra solar planets can not be resolved with the telescopes we have, but when a star wobbles on its axis, something has to cause it. Luminosity is achieved only with a mass large enough for atomic conversion, so if there is no luminous mass visibly close enough to make a solar disk wobble, chances are high that it is of planetary origin causing a gravitational wobble. That`s the wonderful thing about science, if you make a discovery, they are going to try so very hard to prove you wrong. That's the other wonderful thing about this kind of science. It's very hard to prove something is wrong when you cannot as yet prove it as right. g Tom C. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: I really dont like Hoya HMC filters....... Now
I worked in a test equipment repair shop for several years. We used dishwashing liquid as an antistatic cleaner for glass plastic analog meter face plates, to prevent static from affecting the meter needle. The secret was to rinse it in warm water, cold water quickly removed all the soap, while warm water let it spread around over the glass and left the tiniest thin coating. Radio Shack sold a little 1-2 ounce bottle of antistatic solution for several dollars that contained only dishwashing liquid and water. Why am I saying this? Possibly washing a filter this way could convey an antistatic property, repelling instead of collecting dust. Tom C. - Original Message - From: "Provencher, Paul M." PUG Gallery Comments [Tom Van Veen Steve Larson]
Tom Van Veen - One Way What caught my eye the first time i saw this picture? The One Way signboard. Next the clouds. And the black thick line. Still unable to figure out what the black thick line is(rooftop?). I am surprise the sky isn't that dark since a red filter was used. However it did made the signboard cryout, and lighten the slopes and the wall. I would like to tell you that I love this picture, the composition, the title, the clouds and the signboard but IMHO i felt that this picture could well be better for another theme. Pardon me but i tend to view the theme and pictures related to it in such a way where i can say Hey, look what nice patterns and textures this picture has captured Steve Larson - Yum! Great idea and creativity. Those chocolates are so inviting, both to the tummy and to the theme. I would even have stop for a second look and admire how they were made and how different each can be. I see that your focus was sharp in the center, pretty shallow depth of field i would say. Since there 5 types of chocolates in the picture, you may want to consider setting a smaller f-stop to make them sharp so that more emphasis can be placed on the pattern and textures. I am also unable to figure out what is the white area on the top center to left picture, and the pinkness in a couple of chocolates in the front. Better DOF would reveal all that to the eye. I believe this shot was taken pretty near to the chocolates as distance affects DOF. Looking at the picture again, it may be possible to have a few compositions from different angle. But I still love the idea and how these chocolates can actually portray the idea of the theme. I admit i am being rather harsh on my critiques but this is what we need to improve. In my most humble opinion. Re: PZ1 grip
It looks like to me that it ingeniously uses the remote release as a way of implementing the vertical shutter release. That being the case, yes it blocks the availability. This is not usually a problem because of the 2 second prefire. The only time I use the remote release is on timed exposures at night or sometimes when I don't want to be looking through the viewfinder for portraits. April PUG continued
Comments on "Heir Bourn" by David Brooks Catchy title. First I wish that this image was just a little larger. It is more difficult to discern detail at half size. The scan looks like it could use a little sharpening. That said, let's look a little closer. The timing of the shot is great. The horse is fully off the ground but still moving up. This is more appealing to me than on the downward side. I suspect that timing this kind of thing is not very easy, as it happens very quickly. A few things that could improve the shot- there is just a tiny bit of post visible on the left edge. I would crop it out as it is more distracting than adding to the image. There is also a pole coming up right on the backside of the rider. This one can't be helped as much unless a different angle were used. A much shallower depth of field could also reduce this distraction as well as bring more attention and focus on the rider/horse. One of my biggest reasons to use a tripod is to help improve my composition. It is always better when I can leave the camera still and look around. In this image, the bottom of the gates are cut off just a bit, while there is ample room on top. This is where the tripod comes into play - being able to see those kinds of details. A minor shift down and you are all set. While I have mentioned some improvements in this photo, I do want to say that is a well done image and I suspect that non-critical viewers would be very pleased with the result. If I had taken this one, I think it would be at least a two session exercise. The first one to get a feel for the result and the second to get the final image. I would also experiment with multiple angles of view. I'm thinking of a low, side front view with the horse coming at you. Re; New PZ1 battery pack Fr: Bruce Dayton--- snip "Perhaps a better question is how fast can it be removed and put back on" I agree. And also could it be usable as only an AA battery pack? Maybe one could remove the new vertical release wire and its plug, or at least tuck it back inside the bottom pack so the camera's remote terminal would then still be available? I wonder how well the PZ1p will operate on AA power alone, instead of the usual lithium? Has anyone checked this out? Dosk - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Also, to complete the series of distracting things, there is something at the top left corner that could have been cropped. I'm not sure about the wider angle, though. PUG Comments: Lewis, Samuels and Mustarde
Hi all, These are my comments to the pictures assigned to me from this month's PUG. (I'd like to once again send a note of appreciation to Chris B. for gettting this comment practice going.) As for my comments: I am usually very hesitant of giving critical comments unless explicitely asked to do so. This is for two reasons, mainly. First, I may not know with what intention a picture is being shown. I may have missed the point completely. Secondly: my comments may get more attention than they deserve. (This means that I do not at all mind having my views challenged, for whatever reason.) So, please just look at them as one individual way to look at a picture. There is no universal thruth in there. Steve Lewis: Barracks Boards The first thing that came to my mind was: Where is the focus? Or is there a blur from a not steadily held camera? I don't know if this slight blur is deliberate or not. Sometimes you may want to have it this way for different reasons. As it stands I find it slightly annoying as I keep trying to adjust my eyes to get it in focus... And you don't really sense that aged wooden texture (or of the fading paint), as you would have, had the focus, or the resolution been crisper. But - apart from all this - it's a nice selection of pattern and textures, that decoratively could be used in it's right place. Hanging on a wall or maybe as a faded background on the screen. Conrad Samuels: Old log Just like in Steve's picture, the selected object is a nice one for finding exiting textures readily available around us if we care to look for them. However, there are two things that I find a reason to critically comment on. First, also in this picture (just like in Steve's) I lack a crispness, resolutionwise. (Maybe some more work could have been done to it, digitally?) Now, this is in fact a difficult shooting situation. Bright midday(?) sun and a very contrasty scene (and I am no expert in dealing with this myself). It seems to have affected the sense of depth, which brings us to the second comment. The arrangement with the log placed as a solid "lump" this much in the foreground with just a slight "window" to a background in the upper left corner poses a problem, in that the relationship between foreground and background doesn't seem to have been considered very much. The background, as shown right now, doesn't really do anything to the picture. Had there been more of it, it could have been a useful contrast that may have highlighted the main object, the log, but now it is more of a distracting feature. (One way would have been to crop the picture to include the log only.) Nevertheless, despite my comments above, it's still a kind of a nice picture of a log...:) John Mustarde: Tortoise This picture is bound to bring a smile to the face of each viewer. (Not a bad quality of a picture at all.) Not really that much to say about it. (Kinda looks the way I feel at times...) Had I gone out to shoot this tortoise for the theme of "Patterns textures" I might have tried to shoot him/her from the front, filling the whole frame with enough DOF to bring out more of his shell, and get it integrated with his feet and head into nore of a unit altogether. But it's perfectly nice as it is. (Btw. it's interesting to see (now as before) how good use you're making of your long focal lengths.) Lasse - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. April Pug Comments; Theriault and Brogden
Assignment: "Yin Yang" by Frank Theriault--- I saw this photo just after my partner got herself a book on the paintings of Vermeer, and I was immediately struck by the similarities of this double animal portrait to Vermeer's style. (All rich and dark browns and blacks and whites.) The subjects are quite relaxed and peaceful, and the overall impression one gets of the shot is one of serenity. The composition is centered and frame filling, excellently done IMO. I enjoyed the delicate contrast of the cats' fur against the smooth and plain background, and I especially like the way the white and dark edges are soft and blending while the rest of the portrait is sharp. Three questions: 1)Was the shot taken with a spotlight or a flash against a black dropcloth, or was the surrounding area blackened in afterwards on a PC? 2)Is the 55/2 Tak you used considered to be a "soft" lens? 3)Did you crop around the frame to enlarge the center? And if so, how much? Rating: A well done portrait. Would really enjoy having my own portrait taken in this style! Assignment: "Breaking Out" by Chris Brogden--- Playful shot. The black camera in the center really looks like it's jumping up and out of line, because of the focus. Also reminds me of a famous WWII photo I've seen somewhere of fighter planes taking off on a carrier deck... Must've been fun setting it up? I do think it could use a bit more contrast. It's not as "arty" as my personal taste prefers, but I also think it has an excellent marketing sense about it and would make a good commercial shot (if more contrasty) for a camera ad. Y'know, like "there's always one that wants to break out of the crowd...", that sort of thing. I would suggest an improvement though; I feel that the framing would be better served with perhaps one inch cropped off of the botto so that only the upper third of the first camera's lens shows... This is of course but personal taste, and I would be curious to see if Chris (and any others) would agree with it? Two questions: 1)How was photo lit? Lighting looks soft and sepia, like natural available light? 2)What is a "Dental Eye" lens, and why do you use it? Rating: A playful shot with commercial potential. Indeed, K-mount enthusiasts wishing for a 100/2 have had but one choice: the old Soligor CD. Introduced in 1979, it used a 58mm filter. I tried ordering one from a British store, for 60 pounds sterling, but it had just been sold. A couple months later, the same store had another specimen, same price. Re: Any FA* Zoom Rumors .
Anytime you introduce a zoom that meets a difficult challenge on two fronts--a challenging range AND a large constant aperture--you guarantee that it will be bought only by pros and the well-heeled. Moreover, such a lens is nearly always hefty and would require huge filters. Nikon made the right choice in designing its 24-135 zoom a variable aperture. Re: PUG idea
Hi Eduardo, I presentedan idea like this several months ago. The intent was to create a super-gallery. The idea evolved into a 'photographer's choice' where each photographer would choose what they considered to betheir best work of PUG images already submitted. I still like the idea. The obvious disadvantage is the time it would take to maintain it.I haven't pushed it any further yet, because since I had theidea, I'd probably get to be the maintainer... and I haven't decided whether I have the time or if there is enough support of the idea to justify the time. My personal thanks for all the members that presented us with some very fine images and, specially to those who give up some of their spare time to build the page, select the images and all the other technical stuff involved, not to mention the commentaries about each submission. In fact, this month images appealed so much to me that I could not avoid thinking how great it would be if, at the end of the year --- perhaps instead of a December gallery, to avoidgiving even more work to the great guys that takecare of everything --- there were a gallery dedicated to the "best" images of the year. I am using the word "best" with great caution here, since I was not capable of thinking of a more suitable one. Perhaps it could be limited to one image from each month gallery, just to permit images to be shown with more resolution, so that we could see all the fine details. I don't know if someone else had that same idea in the past, if it was discussed or if it's just not possible. What do you think about it? Best, Eduardo.

FA-1 FA-1W Hey guys, Ok, I know what boz's page on the FA-1 FA-1W finders for the LX say (I went there), but I'm having a bit of trouble TRANSLATING that into something I can understand. Can anyone hazard to attempt to explain the difference to me? Rob's explanation is better than I could give. Oh, and while you're at it, if you have a favorite eyepiece, what is it and why? I think the FA-1 is the better of the two finders. My FA-1W doesn't seem as crisp as either of my FA-1s. I have the FB-1/FC-1 combination, which I really like for longish lenses. The eyepeice swivels through 90, so if you have the camera low, you don't have to break your back looking through the finder. I don't like it at all for wide angle lenses. I also have a little round eyepiece for the FB-1. I forget it's designation. It is quite good for if the camera is on a microscope, and also very nice for macro shooting. The eyepiece is at a 45 angle, so the camera is strange to use vertically. I have always wanted to try a waist level finder on the LX, but not enough to buy one, mostly because the 6x7 is really funky to use with the waste level finder. My personal thanks for all the members that presented us with some very fine images and, specially to those who give up some of their spare time to build the page, select the images and all the other technical stuff involved, not to mention the commentaries about each submission. In fact, this month images appealed so much to me that I could not avoid thinking how great it would be if, at the end of the year --- perhaps instead of a December gallery, to avoid giving even more work to the great guys that take care of everything --- there were a gallery dedicated to the "best" images of the year. " RenCen " by Bill Sawyer, USA The more I look at this one the more I like it. I first thought of it as a purely abstract composition, with a nice colour block and some related tones. Then I began to wonder, What _is_ that red cylinder? So now it became a much more interesting picture. The verticals and diagonals play off each other very nicely. The only thing that doesn't fit so well in the muted colour harmony is the bright beige light in the window on the right. This is a picture I'd like to have taken, but don't think I know how to, yet. Bill, what did you meter on to get such pleasing balance? The red thing in the middle was some kind of support column. This was one of my earliest rolls of film shot through the ZX-5n/28-70 f2.6 combination (the lens overwhelms the camera). I used the matrix metering, so cannot take any credit for doing anything special - really just an experiment. FWIW, I was shooting for the patterns/colors as I think of this sort of thing as "visual push-ups" so to speak. Thanks VERY much for positive feedback, I'm developing some confidence in my images. Re: AF280T questions
Here goes: H and L modes are outputs on manual. H is high, and L is low. M is for manual settings. MS is for manual settings but the flash will mate with the LX and set the flash shutter speed at 1/75th second. For off the camera TTL, get the hotshoe grip. I use the 4P Sync Cord B cable. One end goes into the grip, the other onto the hotshoe of the LX. There is a switch on the hotshoe grip regular synch (1/75) and slow synch at speeds below 1/75 sec. I usually meter the scene with the LX and set the hotshoe grip on slow synch. Once shutter speed and f-stop give me the correct exposure for the scene, I trip the shutter and get very good fill-flash. Unfortunately, you can't use a higher shutter speed above 1/75 for flash. I've never use my 280T with my SF1n. I think it can be done. Hope this helps. Jim A. Hey Tom, if you want I'll give you this guy's email address. Yes? Maybe there wasn't really anything wrong with this guy's deal. (I did leave that option open, didn't I? You know, that option you ridiculed with your self righteousness?) But maybe you could get a better deal from him. I mean after all, a brand new SF1n for $115 and a Carl Zeiss-Jena 28-80mm zoom f1.4 - 5 (???) lens (which a knowledgeable person has told me that he never knew Carl Zeiss-Jena even made a zoom), with a UV and a skylight filter thrown in too, for only $100 more? Hey silly, maybe you might even get an almost new PZ1p from him for $150 or so? (One never knows, right?) So you go boy and give it a try. And let me know how it works out will'ya? I wouldn't mind it at all if you proved everything here was on the up and up. Not at all. The guy has great prices..! Just don't go and offend this cat by mentioning escrow transactions and you should be okay! And his address, given only after being requested, Western Canada, is not that big a place, right? Should be able to trace him easily if you should get shafted, right? (Talk about pains in the ass...) Then he offered to also sell me a "Zeiss-Jena" lens (to fit on the Pentax?) Yes. and two filters, all for only $100 more. Could be a reasonable deal, depending on the lens. Re: PZ1 grip
Take a look here: http://wdcamengineering.com/PENTAX_GRIP_7web.jpg It appears that the arm that comes up can be easily removed, and then you can just pull the wire out of the cable release socket and use your cable release with the AA pack still on. Of course no verticle release if you do that, but you don't need a verticle release and a cable release at the same time I think. Another thing that could be done with the AA pack would be to add an extra cable release socket onto it, maybe even a socket for the old mechanical type? Todd At 03:51 PM 4/2/01 -0400, you wrote: So now you will not do timed exposures at night? And you will always look thru the viewfinder for portraits? Or will you unscrew this battery pack every time you wish to do either..? I'm sorry; I do recognize how much work was put into this nice looking and very ingenious pack by it's engineer creator. And I know I certainly could not accomplish something like this anywhere near as well! But to me this terminal release blockage is a design flaw that would prevent me from ever purchasing such a pack. (After I get my PZ1 of course. And I intend to do so.) I would much rather have an AA battery pack without a vertical release if this release blocks the only remote cable terminal... I use this terminal on my cameras a lot, and Geez it's not all that difficult for me to use the currently existing shutter release in a vertical body position, AFAIC! (Didn't somebody just recently put out a new camera without a remote terminal release? Nikon, I think it was... Re: April Pug Comments; Theriault and Brogden
Hi, Skip, Thanks for your comments. To answer your questions: 1. It was shot using available light coming in through a large window. Those cats are light sleepers, and and any sort of artificial lighting (especially a flash) would have only given me one chance at a shot. As it was, they were disturbed by the sound of the shutter, and although I did get a couple of images, since I gave them time to settle back down between my three shots. Likewise with a black drop cloth: they never would have remained asleep had I put one behind and under them. The shot was candid - I just saw them sleeping that way, and pulled out my camera. I did blacken the background on my PC - it was originally a dark blue sleeping bag. 2. I have no idea if the 2.0 55mm is a "soft" lens. I just bought a 1.4 50mm, which I should have in a few weeks, so I'll be able to directly compare them, but sharpness or softness isn't a big issue with me, so I don't pay much attention to these things. 3. No cropping. I try to crop as little as possible, and when I do, it is usually to fit a particular print format. In any event, this image was "cropped in the viewfinder". Although I did blacken the background, the "softness" that you noticed around the edges of the cats was not manipulated, but is the result of the soft light coming in through the window. Once again thanks for your thoughts; I'm glad you liked it. regards, frank dosk wrote: Assignment: "Yin Yang" by Frank Theriault--- I saw this photo just after my partner got herself a book on the paintings of Vermeer, and I was immediately struck by the similarities of this double animal portrait to Vermeer's style. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Bovine Growth Hormone, Bad Milk Lesions
The general laws of motion for heavenly bodies was developed by Kepler (1571-1630). Newton's (1642-1727) law says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, further he developed the law of gravity, acceleration as a function of combined mass and distance. This mathematics, along with the calculus, proved gravity the natural force that defined Kepler's equations. Today, we see some stars move back and forth with definite period when plotted over some time. Since they move, acceleration is taking place. If acceleration is taking place there must be an equal and opposite reaction somewhere. We see this movement with binary stars, but with the observation we are discussing, no second star is seen. Whatever it is that is supplying the mass necessary to produce this phenomena is dark. From the period, size of displacement, and the estimated mass of the observed star (from brightness, temperature, etc.) a size (mass) may be estimated for the dark mass (planet). From the accuracy of the instrumentation and from the verified statistics of other observations, an accuracy for this mass estimate can be determined. Over time (your 20 years) the accuracy of measurements has increased dramatically to make the mass estimates sufficiently tight to identify a planet. Since we have all observed the dramatic advances in technology in the past 20 years (what computer were you using in 1981?), it is not surprising that what was once an educated conjecture has now been verified. All this sounds quite well grounded in science and mathematics to me. In other words, it IS scientifically based. FYI, most of the measurements are made using photography (and a clock and calendar). I have no idea where this word "wobble" came from, but can only assume it was used by someone in an attempt to reference the phenomena for those ignorant in astronomy and it somehow stuck. The star is NOT wobbling. It is moving back and forth in relation to the background stars. Regards, Bob... Give blood. Play hockey. From: "aimcompute" [EMAIL PROTECTED] I remember in the 70's (maybe before that) when the star Aldeberan was one of the first stars suspected if having planets because of it's wobble effect across the sky. (One never knows, right?) Checking KEH prices, $115 doesn't look ridiculous for a used SF1n. It does seem a little low, but not atypical for a private transacation. I know I've sold stuff rather cheap to people from this list. BTW, here's a zeiss jena zoom: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1224528005 So you go boy and give it a try. And let me know how it works out will'ya? I wouldn't mind it at all if you proved everything here was on the up and up. I don't have to prove anything. You're the one implying this guy is a fraud, you're the one who should show some proof. Actually, you don't even need to do that, just give a more detailed description of what happened, or post the correspondence. I don't know this guy from Adam, but now my only impression of him is what you've provided. Unfortunately, it's not very detailed. - You didn't tell us how he represented the camera or lens. - You didn't state specifically if he refused to give his address. - You didn't tell us the pricing. - You didn't tell us how far you talked him down. - You didn't tell us how he wanted you to pay. - You didn't tell us if a warranty period was specified. - You didn't tell us if he represented himself as a dealer or private seller. People warn about bad sellers on this forum every once in a while, and it's appreciated. However, I think it's very important that when someone does, they give specifics. You didn't. tv - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions.
