Pretty pictures
Hi, If anyone wants to see some shots made with the 31mm Ltd or a comparison shot of the MZ-S/Z1-P, please mail me OFF LIST (sorry for shouting). They are just snapshots of a bridge in St Petersburg at fully open and closed aperture. Total of 250Kb for all three. Bit of operator error (left the date [not data] imprinting on on the MZ-S, although I was sure it was off) and some scanning artefacts. Replies to the list will not be answered. mike - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. 31mm Ltd evaluation
Hi all, Quick dirty, part of a private mail to a PDML member: Seems to be an excellent performer. Very little vignetting, no obvious colour cast, astonishing flare resistance, bright look in the viewfinder, fast and quiet in AF, easy to focus in MF, high resolution. Negatives: big, silver, expensive. Seems to have a fixed hood and the lens cap pushes on over it. The cap is lined with green velvet and I suspect that, over time, this would become quite loose. Feels good when it is new. mike - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Voigtlaender vs Pentax
Dear Arnold, and the other PDMLers, On Thu, Jun 21, 2001 at 05:56:39AM +0200, Arnold Stark wrote: [ Useful advice about where to buy cameras in Germany snipped. ] Sorry if I've offended the Pentax users here, but my lust for wider lenses has driven me to the option of range-finder-style cameras. But fear not, I do own two ME Supers, one MX, winders for all three, plus eight SMC Pentax lenses. New Voigtländer wide angles are not necessarily cheaper than used Pentax ones. Well, in the UK, I can get Voigtlaender Bessa L (the one without rangefinder - actually the light-tight box with a shutter and a screw thread) plus the 15mm lens for 450ukp. I don't think at these focal lengths I'd really benefit from an SLR. I mainly shoot from the hip with the SMC A 24/2.8 (actually, from the knees!) and I imagine it would be similar with a 15mm. I can pop a level into the accessory shoe and keep the viewfinder in my pocket. But I'm torn - I love my Pentax cameras dearly! Re: Where German PDMLers shop their camera gear
On Thu 2001-06-21 (05:56), Arnold Stark wrote: Hello Francis Tang, I guess I must have been unlucky because Darmstadt doesn't seem to have many good camera stores. (Noone here's heard of the Voigtlaender!) Maybe Darmstadt does not ahve many good camera stores, but Frankfurt is not far away, and you should be more lucky there. Hm, Darmstadt is famous for Jugenstil, but not for cameras. In fact I would not know the best shop there, although I've been working there for 5 years. I'd recommend the shop at the eastern exit of the Luisenplatz (that's this one with the statue of Ludwig on a high pillar). At least they offer a big second hand market their twice a year. I did not have any contact, but there's a good club who might have helped you. Voigtlaender should be known in every good shop, although they are out of market mostly everywhere (old cameras, now mainly reseller of lenses, cheap cameras or flims - do they actually build anything on their own? I considered them as a low quality seller nowadays). In fact the same is true for Pentax :-( Most shops offer Nikon and Canon, while only few offer another brand, such as Minolta/Pentax/Olympus/Leica... Prices in Germany are high for cameras, so there's no real cheap offer. What you may get cheaply is some equipment from Russia (some lenses) or Tschechien (Tchecia? bw-paper, films) which I purchased at Fotostube Weiden (now Foto Brenner, http://www.fotobrenner.de/) - this shop is good for extra equipment and workshop, but not for cameras. They offer e.g. cheap 6x6 cameras, panorama cameras ot other weird stuff - put since you stick to Pentax, this may be of minor interest to you ;-) I purchased my MZ-5N at Foto Koch (Duesseldorf, http://www.foto-koch.de/), while another online seller, apart from technik-direkt is e.g. Oehling http://www.oehling.de/ (more high-end and digital), New York Camera (http://www.ny-camera.com) or Foto Brinker (http://www.fotoversand-brinker.de/ cheap, but sometimes unclear quality). When you look at the German FAQs, http://www.drf-faq.de , you'll find a link to even more shops: http://home.t-online.de/home/TFrank/fotoversender.htm In fact this is one of the excellent source when you have questions to photographie in Germany: news:de.rec.fotografie , a high volume newsgroup, but very well kept. A question of perspective
This question is just out of curiosity: For those who use 645/67 lenses on 35mm bodies (probably only a couple), do you find that your images have a flatter field? That is, do they look more natural because of the greater lens coverage? Collin * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. 80-320 lens purchase question
Hi: I could use some advise. BH has what seems like 2 very similar Pentax lenses. The only differences I can tell are price and catalog number and one is called silver. They list a Zoom Tele 80-320mm f/4.5-5.6 Lens SMCP-FA Auto Focus Lens with a catalog number 27607 for $279.95 and a Zoom Tele 80-320mm f/4.5-5.6 SMCP-FA Auto Focus Lens (Silver) with a catalog number 27608 for $189.95 Is there a difference here, and is one better for my zx5n? RE: A question of perspective
Another question about the 645 lens adapter for k-mount bodies: Is it still available? (And if so, how much does it cost?) Now here's the interesting part: Since the 645 lenses project a much larger image circle than k-mount (35mm) lenses, I'm thinking about having a machinist make or modify me a 645-to-k adapter with shift capabilities. Any 645 lens would become a shift lens when mounted on a 35mm body. The 35mm, 45mm and 75mm 645 lenses would be the most useful, I expect. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Tony, people say the only difference is colour and BH simply got a good discount on a large purchase. Never having the opportunity to handle the black one, I wonder if it's inner tube has the same soldered cardboard appearance as does my silver sample. That said, it handles well and optically is better than its detractors usually say. Servus, Alin Tony wrote: TI I could use some advise. BH has what seems like 2 very similar Pentax TI lenses. RE: 80-320 lens purchase question
Hope I dont get flamed... As far as I know they are one and the same, there is certainly only a silver one listed on the Pentax website. This is probably a mistake on BHs part. However, general consensus is that this lens isnt great, certainly not par 180mm or so, and that the Sigma 70-300 is a better choice. Plus the Sigma has a macro facility to boot. It is also cheaper at $169 form BH. RE: 80-320 lens purchase question
The two lenses are the same as far as I know...not a bad lens, especially at the price. There's something obscene about the look of it as it zooms (you'll see what I mean when you get it home). My only gripes about the one I had were that the front element rotates and that the zoom creeps like crazy when you carry it about. It's a bit soft at longer focal lengths, but it's not serious in view of the price of the lens and has to be expected. As for your 5n, the silver one will match better (if you care about that), but optically and from a build quality standpoint, they are identical lenses. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Tony Iallonardo Sent: June 21, 2001 06:54 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 80-320 lens purchase question Hi: I could use some advise. Re: Colour-presentation of Pentax lenses compared to Other Brands
My most profound revelation on colour casts in lenses happened when I got my first ED (F*-FA*) lens. All of my shots on non-ED glass looked like silly little snapshots, with highly unrealistic colour. The ED glass focusses all of the colours on the same point (plane), yeilding a marvelous rendition withh accurate, saturated, and in-focus colours. I then traded in all of my other lenses on the high-end stuff, and now own a FA*24 f2, an FA* 28-70 f2.8, an FA*85 f1.4, and the fabulous F* 300 f4.5. They really do make a huge difference, especially in the colour department. Cameron - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. High Sync flash checkout with the MZ-S.
I did not save the message, but someone commented that you could not set the shutter speed faster than 1/180 with RTF up. This is correct in its default setting. However, by setting the flash mode to High Sync Wireless (using the flash-function button and the select dial) you can set the shutter speed faster with the RTF up. The flash does fire even with the shutter speed set to 1/6000. I am willing to check to see how this works with the flash, but I don't know what would be a good procedure. Please let me know and I will do my best to let everyone know the results. RE: Colour-presentation of Pentax lenses compared to Other Brands
Yeah, I agree, those lenses are stellar, although I only have the FA*24 f/2. They're so expensive, I have to find things to sell or trade in when I see one I want. Unfortunately, by the time I can scrape together the cash, they're usually sold. If anyone has a whole series of FA* lenses they want to trade for an autographed Pia Zadora 8x10 or a complete set of Leonard Maltin action figures, please email off-list. Hee. I was at a garage sale last week and the woman had a single M 135 f/3.5 in a case; I almost missed it. I held it up to the light; the thing was so full of fungus it was amazing. I left it where it was. I have this fantasy of finding such a sale where someone is dumping all this Pentax stuff for really cheap. So far, it remains a fantasy. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Cameron R. This is correct in its default setting. However, by setting the flash mode to High Sync Wireless (using the flash-function button and the select dial) you can set the shutter speed faster with the RTF up. The flash does fire even with the shutter speed set to 1/6000. Hi Cesar, I said that, but I didn't check the flash setting while checking the camera. High Sync Wireless means that you must use another flash off the camera, right? So the RTF flashes anyway, but what could the guide number be in that mode? I am willing to check to see how this works with the flash, but I don't know what would be a good procedure. Please let me know and I will do my best to let everyone know the results. Re: Question about ZX5n Focusing Screen
Having grown up on a Super Program which has been replaced with a ZX-5n, I've always wanted to replace the focusing screen on the ZX-5n. Is it really feasible to use the ZX-M screen on a ZX-5n? I would be very interested in this repair. Hi, The way I see things, this would not be advisable, partly due to the fact that the split-image in the middle of the screen will affect metering adversely. Specifically, spot metering will probably be way off. Cheers, Boz - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Hi Cesar, You should pick a close subject (no farther than 1 meter so that the low power of RTF copes with it) in a fairly dark room - flash should be the main light. Then set the shutter speed to 1/250 - 1/6000 and see how the pictures come out. If the subject is uniformly exposed (even if underexposed), then the RTF does sync at that speed. If they come with stripes, than the RTF bursts are only for remote control of the other flashes. Servus, Alin - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: 80-320 lens purchase question
The difference is the paint job - price difference probably has to do with when the dealer purchased the 2 versions and what the Pentax list price was at the time. The Silver version replaced the Black. As for the quality - much has been discussed here but my experience is that it is a very good lens for the price. Re: Tricky shot - need advice
If you are going to use strobe, I suggest finding a pro shop and renting a serious unit, something like a 4800ws pack with 4 heads. You aim the heads so they overlap in the center of the dome but the edges only are lit by one or two heads. You should use a Polaroid to check and adjust the lighting before making the serious exposures. Of course, if you are not getting paid at least expenses this will take quite a lot of out-of-pocket money, maybe more than you want to spend. However, if you are doing this for pay, you will want professional results. --Tom Patrick Genovese wrote: Hi, I need advice on how to go about taking a rather tricky shot. The subject is the inside of a church dome with an exquisite pattern on the inside. Here are some problems/challenges that I face. The place is huge (approx 50 meters from the church floor to the dome's apex). The interior lighting is very problematic, a mxture ot tungsten and flourescent ligting of various types. I Want the shot to be symmetrical to enphasise the symmetry of the pattern. The problem with this is that there is a big silver chandelier hanging from a chain presicely in the center. To work around this I have arranged to do the shoot when the chandelier is removed for cleaning in preparation for the village feast. I need to use slow film to permit a decent enlargement. Natural lighting is somewhat uneven. My flash setup is one AF500FTZ plus I can borrow 2 METZ CT60s I was thinking of a bulb exposure in total darkness and using multiple flash bursts to illuminate the interior. Suggestions please! This shoot will happen between now and August 6, the next chance for a re-shoot will be next year so I'd like to get it right first time! Re: Pentax CCD back design
Some comments re Phillips 24x35 ccd. I guess that the fact the sensitive surface is about 2.5 mm behind the surface of the package is what makes interchangeable digital backs difficult. Probably not a problem with an in lens shutter because the sensor could be recessed into the camera, but a focal plane shutter would not allow that. This maybe why you can get digital backs for some medium format cameras but not for 35 mm SLRs. Shutter: As far as I know ccds do not need a mechanical shutter. The have an electronic shutter feature, at least the Phillips ccd in question does. But then, you are not using the same interface for the ccd as for film. The Phillips site says you can get ccds up to the 6 inch diameter of a wafer. That translates to up to 4x5 inches. Anyone for a 4x5 slide in back? --Tom Collin Brendemuehl wrote: My concerns deal with compensation for the mechanical shutter and problems related to it. Here's some issues: #1 -- One roadblock that I faced was dealing with auto-exposure mechanisms and curtain travel at higher shutter speeds (you end up with a slit). How are you dealing with this problem? My net result was that automation would be lost because of the lack of high shutter speeds controlled by the body. #2 -- Back availability. To make an interchangable back one must order a bunch of parts from the manufacturer so that the units can be retrofitted in a reasonable amount of time. I wouldn't want to lose film usage. And if a mistake is made in modifying a back, one should have extras available. #3 -- Interchangability. To add a dark slide isn't a really big mechanical problem. But it is a cost concern. The slide is needed to protect the sensor when off the body. Add another $50USD to the price of the unit. And also limit the # of bodies that you can afford to build them for. #4 -- Sensor mounting. Because there's some rather convenient rails for discerning the film plane in every 35mm body, it's easy to build a set of standards for the sensor to ride on to maintain depth registration. One will simply need to engineer a set of standards so that it's a simplemechanism on any particular camera body. What remains is lateral motion. This will happen because of the needed motion to allow for interchangability. If you can resolve these in a cost-effective manner, go for it. The circuit isn't much of a problem -- CCDs are almost OTS as far as interfacing. And as was stated, go for a 4-AA NiMH system with the IBM MicroDrive 1G. You'll have a nice market. Also, I do C Assembler programming, esp. with microcontrollers. Let me know if you need assistance. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Hi These questions are about MZ-S. 1) Camera being in SPOT Metering mode, when I select different focus point, does the SPOT Metering area too change with the focus point? 2) Assume I am shooting a flat surface having different illumination at different parts. I select the focus point which is on dark area and do MULTI SEGMENT metering. Then I select the focus point which is on bright area and do MULTI SEGMENT metering. Do the metering readings be same? The spot metering point stay in the center of the frame it does not move to the focus points. 2) Assume I am shooting a flat surface having different illumination at different parts. I select the focus point which is on dark area and do MULTI SEGMENT metering. Then I select the focus point which is on bright area and do MULTI SEGMENT metering. Do the metering readings be same? The Multi Segment is going to read the entire frame from each of six segments and set the exposure based on computer logic of the program established by the camera manufacture. The multi segment is a compromise exposure at best. Metering is really an art. Every camera meter is set to an 13% Gray (not 18% as most people think.) If you metered off a 13% gray surface for every exposure you would have a perfect exposure. If you meter off a white surface the meter will think it is a gray and the exposure will come out dark. If you meter off black the surface will meter will again think it is gray and the exposure will come out overexposed. Therefore, I use the spot metering and adjust depending on the color. Light colors get plus above the meter reading and dark colors get a stop down from the camera reading. If you are going to use the multi segment meter I would recommend bracketing. I had visited http://royalcamera.com/, they charge 799USD for camera(MZ-S), which is less compared to others on-line sites, but shipping is cost 59USD. They seems to make money from shipping. Re: Pentax items on ebay
Hello all, I'm a recently subscribed user to this list, but have been skimming it fairly comprehensively under the pretense of doing work at my real job (which has nothing to do with photography). I'm a pretty rank amateur (and rank is the right term, as many of my photographs stink) that jumped into the world of SLR photography about a year and a half ago. Only within the last six or so months have I discovered the wonder that is photo.net and other resources over the net, and reading the deluge of information has cased me to feel a little uneasy about my system (what little there is of it). I've just got one body (the MZ-7) and a pair of lenses (a Tamron 28-200 Super II and a 50/1.8), along with a few goodies I've picked up to extend the camera's usefulness (cable release, wireless remote, 400-FTZ flash). The reason I'm bringing this up as an extension to the ebay thread is that I'm concerned about the Pentax system, particularly given midrange competition like the Canon Elan 7. To my untrained eye, it appears as though the HSM on many Canon lenses, and the IS features on a few, are category killers (the Nikon Silent Wave stuff is hideously expensive) and relatively moderately priced. As well, the features on the bodies, while perhaps somewhat whiz-bang, are relatively comprehensive even on a mid-line model (DoF, spot metering, MLU, really fast AF, and the Elan apparently has nearly silent operation). I know you've seen the question within the last month, but I'm wondering what keeps you wedded to the Pentax system - is it the substantial investment in glass, or the joy of being able to find older quality MF lenses for cheap on occasion? I'm certainly not trying to start a jihad, just making the (perhaps well-worn) observation that Pentax seems even more conservative with lens features than even N. Hopefully I'm not merely falling victim to corporate hype, but I'd be interested by opinions. Apologies if I'm treading overly familiar ground, but the situation seemed pertinent to ask this as a corollary. Re: Question about ZX5n Focusing Screen
I seem to have gotten a little speck of dust/dirt on the top side of my ZX5n focusing screen. Its really annoying through the finder. On my LX, there's a hinged door that drops down so you can change/clean the focusing screen. Does anyone know if the screen on the ZX5n can be removed w/o damaging the camera? It looks similar, but I don't think there's a hinge like the LX. funny you mention this, since i suffered from the same problem a mere few weeks ago. for some reason or another, dust had affixed itself to my zx-5n's focusing screen and after taking it to three different camera shops they all came to the conclusion that they couldn't clean it because the dust was on the INSIDE of the focusing screen (how it got there is anyone's guess). they used blowers to try to air it off which greatly worried me, because i was afraid they'd damage my mirror or focusing screen in the process (that never happened, fortunately). the crazy thing is that the dust speck itself gradually came off. i bring my camera everywhere i go, and on a few occasions left it in the passenger seat of my car. i noticed that each time i left it in such a hot spot (NOT RECOMMENDED btw) the dust speck would gradually move down and eventually it flaked off the focusing screen. my guess is that the humidity in the vehicle loosened it enough that it fell off. personally i wouldn't worry too much about it. if it REALLY bothers you, send it to pentax for cleaning and service. sherwin abesamis mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Pentax items on ebay
From: Kevin Butler [EMAIL PROTECTED] . . . wondering what keeps you wedded to the Pentax system - is it the substantial investment in glass, or the joy of being able to find older quality MF lenses for cheap on occasion? I really liked my Nikkormat (circa late '60's), but after about the first year I could never trust the light meter and it was very expensive to repair. I really liked my Olympus OM-1, but it seemed as though third-party lenses weren't available and Olympus lenses were expensive. I got into Pentax gear with the ME Super. Like my previous two, nice simple operation, solid, and even more reliable, with many lens choices. Fast forward through almost 20 years of mostly vacation pictures. When I rediscovered photography, I went with the PZ-1p because I had the Pentax lenses and the PZ felt comfortable in my hands. I still like the PZ and consider it a simple reliable camera. With much potential for the times I want to or need to complicate my life. But I have gone more and more retro, and just really love the solid simplicity of the LX and the 645. Canon? Olympus? Nikon? None have the same backward/forward compatibility of lenses to cameras that Pentax has - really marvelous! Good lenses, usable across a broad range of camera bodies from very simple to very sophisticated, everything well designed as a system, well thought through and laid out, . . . sticking wit Pentax is a no-brainer for me. It hurts my head to think about the research I would have to do to try to learn the Canon jargon so that I could learn which used lenses fit which used or new cameras! A 35-105 f/3.5
Is the A 35-105 f/3.5 a good zoom? I'd appreciate comments both good and bad, as well as a reasonable price I should pay if I were to buy it. On Thu, 21 Jun 2001, Kevin Butler wrote: The reason I'm bringing this up as an extension to the ebay thread is that I'm concerned about the Pentax system, particularly given midrange competition like the Canon Elan 7. One thing to think about: the existence of 'better' or more fully-featured products does not lessen the quality of yours. If you're speaking more in general terms, then Pentax does quite well in the entry-level SLR market (at least where I come from), though opinions vary about their mid-range stuff. The Elan 7's not a bad camera, though its partial metering doesn't cover a very narrow area and I personally dislike the interface. Nikon's F80 is a sweet little camera (with its 1 degree spot meter), though I would miss the metering with MF lenses. To my untrained eye, it appears as though the HSM on many Canon lenses, and the IS features on a few, are category killers (the Nikon Silent Wave stuff is hideously expensive) and relatively moderately priced. Canon's USM (HSM is a Sigma thing) is a nice feature. I think most of us are willing to sacrifice it for the advantages of a Pentax system. Of course, if ultra-fast focusing is a necessity, then Canon or Nikon would probably be the way to go, as they seem to be continually at the forefront of integrating the latest technology into their equipment. As well, the features on the bodies, while perhaps somewhat whiz-bang, are relatively comprehensive even on a mid-line model (DoF, MZ-5n has it (as well as the MZ-3 and Z-1p if you can still find them). spot metering, MZ-5n has a 2.5 degree spot meter. Nikon F80 does have 1 degree, but Canon's Elan 7 has something awful like 11 degrees, IIRC. MLU, I don't think any current AF Nikon below the F5 has this, and I don't think the Elan 7 has it (can't remember for sure). Pentax's Z-1p has a 2 second self-timer option with MLU, and I can use my Pentax lenses on several older bodies with MLU. really fast AF, As far as speed goes, I'd put Pentax right up there with any other mid-range body with a decent lens on it. In terms of stuff like lock-on focus tracking I think C and N have them beat. and the Elan apparently has nearly silent operation). It's pretty quiet, yeah. The MZ bodies are way too noisy for my liking, especially the AF. I know you've seen the question within the last month, but I'm wondering what keeps you wedded to the Pentax system - is it the substantial investment in glass, or the joy of being able to find older quality MF lenses for cheap on occasion? Hoo boy, this could be a long one. :) I'll try to make it brief. --Excellent quality glass and coatings. --Excellent body/lens compatibility. I can put *any* Pentax lens on my K-mount bodies, ranging from the old 42mm screwmounts (and even the older 37mm Asahiflex lenses) right up to medium format lenses. Not to mention that any Pentax K-mount lens (K, M, A, F, and FA series) will work on any K-mount body (made since 1975). Neat things like the 1.7x AF adapter will let me use AF (albeit slow) with MF lenses, and I can interchange MF and AF bodies and lenses as I choose. --Pentax tries to offer a different product to Canon and Nikon. Where C/N tend to go for full-featured large bodies with similar designs, Pentax has tried to make more compact cameras with unique designs (Z1-p, MZ-S, etc.). They are willing to sacrifice some features like a huge fps count in favour of others that you just can't find in other brands. Look at all the stuff that the Z-1p will do that C/N won't: Hyper modes (incredible!), side-mounted hotshoe, zoom clip / image size tracking (gimmicky), MLU with self-timer, etc. Look at the retro design of the MZ-5n... try to find that traditional layout in a current AF camera from Canon or Nikon. Look at things like the Limited lenses. Pentax seems to be putting more thought into offering an actual alternative to C/N, and I appreciate that. --I love using older MF equipment, and I love the feel of the pre-Spotmatic Pentaxes. Older Canons and Minoltas just don't feel right to me, and even the Nikons are too large and heavy for my liking. You can't beat the feel of a good PSP. --The LX and Super Program. 'Nuff said. --Their MedF stuff. I like the fact that I can use MedF lenses on 35mm bodies, and try to find MedF equipmetn from Nikon or Canon. I appreciate that Pentax is trying to serve that market as well. --Again, the excellent lenses. That deserves repeating. :) I went into Pentax being fully aware of the advantages and features of the other brands. Some of them are nice, and if I was doing work that need a 10fps camera and USM/IS lenses then I would probably be using Nikon or Canon. But because I don't need those features, I can look more at what else the camera systems have to offer, and for my needs Pentax wins hands down. I love MF stuff, so Canon's not even a contender due to the changed lens mount. I like a lot of Nikon's stuff, but in the end I found

I consider the SMCA 35-105 f/3.5 to be excellent as zooms go, especially 3:1 zooms. It will not compare with primes, but compared with other zooms it is, sharp with good contrast. It does show a small amount of barrel distortion.
