RE: Testing the AutoPUG
Hi William and all, When you were talking about 'nuking the PUG' were you talking about transferring it into phpnuke ? It would be nice to let the Pentax users publish themselves their pictures, and the others visitors to publish comments on each picture without givig the Pug webmasters too much work. This is what permitts the use of a web site based on phpnuke. For additional information please visit www.phpnuke.org and go into the mygallery or e-gallery add-on section. Cheers, Cyril. Is this a good idea?
Every time I find a lens I'd consider buying, I have to research its price, usually looking at this lists archive, ebay past auctions, etc. So I put together this page: http://www.jbuhler.com/pprice.html Where we could list prices of lenses we bought or sold, and we could use as a reference when looking for a specific lens. The greedy part of me says this is a bad idea, and could stop bargains from happening. My sensible side says it's a good idea, since I usually don't really want to rob people of their lenses, and people who want to research the price of a lens would be able to do so regardless of the existence of this page anyway. So, if you feel like this is a good idea and have data to contribute, email it to me. Hopefully this will be more popular than the "PDML favorite locations" list I started a few months back, which got a mind-boggling 2 or 3 answers total. Cheers, j = -- Juan J. Re: Lowepro Micro Trekkers - opinions?
Hello Cotty I have a Micro Trekker 200 SE (Special Edition) that was about a third cheaper than the non-SE version. There are only a few minor differences eg the SE lacks a keyring holder. Most importantly the SE has sliding but not lockable adjustment for the chest strap. This can be a little annoying, but IMO it's worth the saving. I'm probably going to sew it into place so it doesn't slip down anyway. In general the pack is brilliant. It comfortably holds MZ-S with 28-70/4, ME super with 50/1.7, either 80-320 or 70-210/4 depending on mood, and 85/1.8, AF330FTZ, along with spare batteries, films, and other oddments. There's a useful pocket on the front of the pack which will easily take sandwiches and drinks, map and compass, waterproof coat (whatever). It's very comfortable indeed and a vast improvement over a shoulder bag. I can wear the pack, filled as above, for several hours, in town or country. I would agree with Mick McGuire though, that access is somewhat less convenient than a shoulder bag, but I have got into the habit of wearing the pack and carrying the camera and lens of choice in my hand. I only have one gripe really, and that is that the zip enclosing the main section of the pack is very accessible. This makes me a bit paranoid in crowded places such as Covent Garden, that some felon will unzip the pack enough to slip out the prized MZ-S. I usually end up carrying the pack by its top handle in these situations. I would highly recommend the Micro Trekker 200 (SE). It meets my needs (as detailed above) almost perfectly. If yours are similar, you will not be disappointed. Re: Lowepro Micro Trekkers - opinions?
If you can get by with a smaller bag I recommend the Lowepro Orion Beltpack. I've just got one for my upcoming Nepal trip and it easily holds my Z1 with gripstrap, 75-150f4 and my Tokina 19-35 f3.5-4.5 with lenshood and still has a bit of room left over for a few rolls of film and other small items. The best thing is that the camera gear is readily assessible at all times and is in front of you where you can keep an eye on it. Re: Why no spotbeam projector on MZ-S? - and on LX-AF...?
Must have made for a very exciting picture. Maybe a future PUG submission? :) Seriously, I did use my PZ-1p a night on a picture of my daughter with a snowman she had built. It was too dark for me to even compose real well. The spotbeam on my AF500FTZ worked like a champ allowing me to record this fun event for her (No snow where we live). With my MZ-S I would have been able to do the same thing. But I am one who tends to use the big flash instead of the popup. "Not another Camera"
My wife is getting sick of surprises (not the type she really wants)! I have done it, yet again, Bid and won a camera on ebay. A Spotmatic of all things! I have 2 already plus 7 K mounts from a K2 to even a P5! My basic Spotmatic (those of you who know me know I refer to them as "Funtaxes") system includes the SMC 28 f3.5 35 f3.5 35 f2.0 55 f1.8 and a 85 f1.8. The main reason I went after it is because it included 3 lenses and the most significant is the SMCT 135 f2.5. This is the same lens as the K135 f2.5 some of us have. The set also includes a SPII, SMCT 55 f1.5, ST 200 f4, Metz 30BCT4 and even a "Pentax Way" book. All this for 152.50. But, you know, there is no magic like a Spotmatic out in the bush. Yes it takes more time and you cannot consume a roll of film in under 6 seconds, but the keepers out number those images that are pitched. Flowers are in order tomorrow as I will break the new to her. Wish me well and such. Bob Rapp - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Delivery question
Dear Sir, We have adopted a new service for customers who require their items to be delivered and signed for at the actual address on the package. It is called Forge and Steal. In the event our driver can not obtain a signature at the delivery address, or can't find the delivery address, or simply needs some extra cash, they are now authorized to sign a name (we have a computer copy of your name, or a close neighbor's name, already on file), remove the contents from the package, and delivery the contents to the nearest Pawn Shop. The monies received for the pawned package contents are considered compensation for the driver. He or she is required to report it on their income tax as "tips". UPS management feels tips are an important part of our employee's compensation package, and support this service fully. You will receive a listing of all the Pawn Shops in a nine-state area. Feel free to contact them regarding the status of your package contents. We don't paint out trucks brown for nothing, you know. RE: MZ-s (serial numbers)
Thanks Bruce! Do you think Pentax codes more into the serial numbers than they tell us about? Or do they start up with high numbers to confuse the opposition about their production? I've always wondered why camera manufacturers never seem to start at serial number 1, or 001. They could get a lot of attention from collectors, if they did. Anyway, that's just an idle thought. Re: Newbie
Hi Francis ... Any lens Pentax ever made will work with the K body, even old screw mount lenses with the appropriate Pentax adapter. However, newer lenses, like auto focus lenses, won't be able to use all their high-tech features, and they'll have to be focussed manually. But they'll fit and they'll work. As for a choice of prime lenses, price and speed might be important considerations. Here are a few suggestions without regard for price and speed: SMCP 24/2.8 SMCP 28/3.5 SMCP 35/3.5 SMCP FA 43/1.9 Ltd SMCP 50/1.4 or SMCP-M 50/1.4 SMCP FA 77/1.8 Ltd SMCP 85/1.8 SMCP 105/2.8 SMCP 120/2.8 SMCP 135/2.5 SMCP-M 150/3.5 SMCP-A*200/2.8 Hope this helps. A far better solution is to not support the company with my business. Normally, I specify that shippers should use anyone but UPS when shipping to me, but I forgot on this occassion. As I have never had a happy experience with a UPS delivery, I think this is the best approach. I don't trust them to do the job with any degree of competance. Here is my bitch list: Goods damaged in transit (twice). Charging brokerage fees on shipments where there were no applicable duties (at least 3 times). Being slower than the post office (every time). Having a Byzantine claims department, thereby ensuring that it is not worthwhile to file a claim for damages or reimbursement for unjustified brokerage fees. (5 times). Abandoning expensive photographic equipment (a pentax spotmeter) on my front door step (once). Delivering packages to an address other than the one specified without permission (twice). Failing to deliver packages to an address other than the one specified after being instructed to do so, and indicating they would make the addrss change (once) Having a Byzantine customer service department, thereby guaranteeing you can never talk to the same person twice, and also ensuring there can be no credibility demanded of the company (ongoing company policy). Re: Newbie
The K-1000 will accept any K mount lens ever made, even the new Auto Focus ones ( it just won't autofocus ), Tamron has a 24-135mm lens but there are many 28-105mm lenses out there. To find lenses any camera store that deals with 35mm SLRs will have them, pawn shops too. You already have 2 good basic prime lenses, the 50mm and the 28mm, a 200mm F4 should not be hard to find nor should it be to expensive either, alother option is a 135mm lens, there are many of these around to for cheap. --- Francis Alviar <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Greetings all, > > I am a newbie to the line of Pentax cameras not to > mention a newbie to the wonderful world of > photography. RE: fill flash and slow sync flash -- and fooling your flash (kin d of long)
Hi Nenad, E-man, Darryn, et al Glad to have been of some help. I hope I've left you with fewer questions than you started with. For me, the easiest way to think about fill flash is to consider the camera (body and lens) as totally separate and independent from the flash unit. I use the meter in the camera body exclusively to measure ambient light for the background, and set aperture and shutter speed on the camera so that the background will be correctly exposed. I then set my flash unit to one of the automatic modes, where I can use the sensor on the flash foot to measure the intensity of the flash (which of course will only illuminate the foreground subject). My Sunpak flash units have switches to change both the film speed and the aperture, in case I need that kind of flexibility. If I want 1:1 lighting, I set these switches to the "true" values. If I want less fill-flash, I set one or the other of these switches accordingly. (For instance, set the aperture to one stop wider than the lens is really set to, or set the film speed to twice the actual speed of the film I have loaded. Either of these choices gives me one stop less foreground illumination.) Nenad has the right idea for using TTL flash metering, I think -- set the camera to manual, then meter the background and adjust shutter and aperture for proper exposure (with film speed set to the ~correct~ value), and THEN manually change the film speed setting on the camera body to fool the flash TTL circuitry into delivering a less powerful flash of light. As Nenad has suggested, it's possible to do the requisite tricks by setting the flash to TTL metering. It just makes the arithmetic a bit more fiddly, and you have to think a little about what you're doing a bit more. I usually find it easier to set the flash unit to auto instead of TTL, then make the adjustments to the switches on the back of the flash unit. Many, but not all, flash units offer you this kind of flexibility. Emmanuel was last trying to figure out how to fool his AF-330FTZ into delivering the correct fill ratio. As I understand, this particular flash has contrast control. Isn't contrast control supposed to take care of fill-flash ratio, or does it just allow you to balance lighting from a master and slave flash? (Which is another problem entirely) E-man, you'll have to look at your manual on this one. Otherwise, you might want to try Nenad's technique. By the way, if you have to change film speed instead of aperture, a 2x change in film speed will be equivalent to a one-stop change in aperture. For example, suppose your camera is actually loaded with 400-speed film. If you can convince your flash unit that you're really shooting 800-speed film instead of 400-speed film (e.g., by manually changing the ASA setting on your camera body to an "incorrect" value of 800), the flash discharge will only be half as bright (i.e., one stop less light). Darryn sounds like he's got the right idea -- he simply worked through the arithmetic in the reverse direction with respect to what I did. (He calculated for the foreground first, and then the background. Works just as well.) At the distance to his foreground subject, a full-power discharge from his flash would properly illuminate the foreground subject if he set the lens to f/11. At this aperture, he would need to set the shutter speed at 1/15 sec to properly expose the background. Everything worked fine. If Darryn wanted one stop less foreground, but a properly illuminated background, he could have set his aperture to f/16 and his shutter speed to 1/8 -- a very tricky proposition if you're hand-holding the camera. If Darryn wanted to use a faster shutter speed, he could set his flash to a lower-power manual discharge (don't know if this is possible on the AF-200T). Alternatively, he could set his flash to one of the auto modes and use the method I describe. Hope this helps. Bill Peifer Rochester, NY - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. RE: More UPS Crap I Hate UPS
> Here is my bitch list: (list of problems deleted) The main reason I don't use UPS stems from one (long) incident. My wife was returning to the East Coast to attend the wedding of one of the girls from her Girl Scout troop. She had been asked to make the wedding cake. This involved some amount of preliminary preparation, and quite a lot of supplies, equipment, etc. to be shipped across the country to complete the final presentation. We sent the stuff UPS air freight. Or, at least, that's what we paid for. The tracking number indicated that the packages were, in fact, being shipped by surface freight - we could track them in and out of the various depots across the country. We, of course, complained - although we had left several days of slack in the shipping, we didn't have the extra week it would take. UPS claimed they had no way to correct the shipment midway; we'd just have to wait for the package to arrive. They could scan it at each of the remaining waypoints, but they had no way to pull the package out. The shipment eventually arrived at the local main depot around midnight on the Friday - still (just) in time for the Saturday wedding. There wouldn't be time for my wife to do much of the fancy decoration, but at least she'd have the cake topper, the presentation stand, etc. Or she might have done, except for the fact that the truck containg the parcel wasn't scheduled to be unloaded until the following Tuesday. The UPS central customer service number wouldn't give us the phone number of the local depot, so we didn't find out this last detail until far too late. (When someone eventually drove down there and talked to the local manager he was outraged, but by then all the staff had left). To add insult to injury - UPS's idea of appropriate recompense for if not ruining the wedding, at least taking the icing off the cake :-) was to offer to refund us the difference between surface and air shipping. -- John Francis . . . . . . . . . . I suppose by this logic, you could list all the Spotmatic variants and surmise that with 164 units the Spotmatic is most popular. And since all the cameras built on the K chassis are variants of the Spotmatic (the only significant difference being the lens mount), we could add in another 201 units to make a total of 365 units for the Spotmatic in all it's variants. Or, we could trust that the manufacturer changes the nameplate for a reason.. Time to go out now. William Robb - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Bodies Roll Call Results UPDATE 127
You may have a point. Nah...all those Spotmatics are too different to be lumped together, although some of their individual totals could defensibly be combined into one grouping of a similar enough camera to be called the "same." I'll have to think about it. And lumping ALL the K's together is going too far, sir! I would concede that the Z-1 and Z-1p may be different enough not to be considered the same, although that's not how I see it. Regarding your unconditional trust of nameplates, would you honestly say that the LX and LX2000, for instance, are really "different" cameras just because the manufacturer named them in those ways for marketing reasons? And surely we can all agree that a K1000 is essentially equivalent to a K1000SE without heading down some terrifying slippery-slope. In any case, it isn't terribly important and I wouldn't get too upset about it. --- William Robb <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > - Original Message - > From: "Chaso DeChaso" < > Subject: Re: Bodies Roll Call Results UPDATE 127 > > > > Z-1 is list favorite. > > > > There are 150 LX's but if you total all the > variants > > of the (P)Z-1's and (Z)PZ-1p's, you get 154! > > I suppose by this logic, you could list all the > Spotmatic > variants and surmise that with 164 units the > Spotmatic is most > popular. So, the supposed waist strap just about crosses my torso at the sternum (is that right? the bit where the rib cage halves join together) - so *nearly* nipple territory. In fact I have read of others less lofty than myself also scoffing at this waist strap. The pack really isn't tall enough to warrant one IMO. Fill Flash
The MZ/ZX 5n fill technique has been described before, but bears repeating. Simply put your camera in manual mode and set the exposure for the ambient background, turn flash on for TTL and turn the exposure compensation dial on the camera to - 1, or what ever value you desire. Very easy. Even easier is to use a diffuser , such as the Stoffen Omni Bounce, on your flash. Because it eats up about 1 1/2 stops of exposure you don't have to make any corrections on the camera or the flash. Just set manual exposure for the ambient background turn on the flash and shoot. I have both the white and gold colored Omni's for my Sunpack 444D. DG - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. While a broad generalization, there is a lot of truth to this. However, the delivery companies are probably aware of this problem, as they all have a method of telling the adressee that they have a parcel, without actually completing the delivery. If they are going to take on the responsibility of residential deliveries, then they should also have protocols in place to ensure that they can complete their contracted responsibilities without putting customers goods at risk of theft or damage. Abandoning a box on someones front step in plain view is not, in my opinion, a responsible delivery method. William Robb - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Last week my 400mm f5.6 SMC-A arrived from the USA with USPS EMS, insured up to $500 for $38.75 from the USA to the UK. We were not at home, so they left a card in the mail box, with a phone number. I called them I wanted to pick the item up, but they couldn't stop it for another delivery attempt. That time it was successful. Else there was also an option to have it shipped to my nearest post office for a £0.50 ($0.70) fee, or pick it up myself from their station. Not too bad for the UK I think. The UPS driver most assuredly know the names of several people at your business address who can sign for packages, and has probably mastered several of their signatures already. Check it out for yourself. Look for packages left in unattended areas when the counter person or shipping person is out of the area. They'll be properly "signed for" and the UPS driver will have some lame excuse about how he can't remember who signed for it (even though he and the signor are first cousins and used to live together) and he can't even remember delivering it (even though he delivered it yesterday whilst the warehouse next door was burning to the ground and it was raining toads) and how "your" people are always signing someone else's name. Hi Geoff, The LX metering is specified to be accurate to 125 seconds in auto but has been proven my many list members to be far more capable than that specification. Like Rob, I've done five and ten minute exposures, as well as some twenty minute ones. All were quite good. Meter accuracy is probably less important than the film's reciprocity failure at exposures that long. You'd be amazed at the service you get from drivers when they know they're delivering something to a police station. - Original Message - From: "William Robb" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Thursday, October 18, 2001 2:38 PM Subject: Re: More UPS Crap > > Rodger Whitlock wrote: > > > > > > > Actually, all the delivery services have one problem in > common: they > > > deliver to residential addresses during the day when no > one's at > > > home. RE: I'm still alive!
I once had a Hillman Minx, built like a tank until the rust got to it, which lost all it's electricals one dark night in the middle of a forest in Norfolk (England). Nothing quite so eerie as plunging into stygian blackness at 60 miles an hour with no recollection of whether the road stayed straight or had been about to curve! Following the Minx, I had a Mini, great little car with one serious fault: there was a snap-together connector in the boot, which you could snag if you were careless putting stuff in there, and which then broke the circuit, so again you had no electrics. Happened to me once when I filled the tank - so embarrassing to be sitting in an apparently dead car with seventy people queueing up behind you to get to the pumps! Aaah, the joys of motoring. Re: LX Meter Readout
My understanding is that the LX is specified as follows: Maximum shutter speed of 125 seconds with 100ASA film and a f1.2 lens, set to f1.2. Assuming the same f1.2 lens is used, slower films and/or setting smaller f-stops increases maximum shutter speed. For example with an f1.2 lens (set to 1.2) and 50 ASA film it would be 250 seconds. With a f1.2 lens (set to f1.7 - 1 stop slower) and 100ASA film it would also be 250 seconds and so on (Note that lenses meter wide open). Conversely, using a 1-stop slower lens, say the 50mm f1.7 used wide open, with 100ASA film, halves the maximum time to 62.5 seconds. However stopping this lens down one stop to f2.5 restores the 125 second maximum. f3.5 makes it 250sec, f4.5 - 500sec, f6.7 - 1000sec and so on. Hope this helps (and I hope it's right :-). I had a Hillman back is the early sixties. I could not kill it until it killed itself. Twisted axle shaft did it in and there were no parts available in the States. I believe the car was a 1954 model. Surprisingly, the Price of Darkness did not pay me a visit. Bob - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: I'm still alive!
'61 Sunbeam Alpine. Like Norm, I spent more hours underneath it than driving it. There was a great J shaped radiator hose that burst every 6 months. The wonderful Lucas system quit as soon as the least bit of moisture showed up under the hood. So not only did it overheat, but it just plain quit. I remember driving to work one day when it just stopped. I popped the hood (bonnet for you English) and pulled the wire from the distributor cap. I cranked the engine and no spark! Lucas, Prince of Darkness. I wished I'd had Bosch electronics. Regards, Bob S. [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: << I had a Hillman back is the early sixties. I could not kill it until it killed itself.
