OPTICS AND KILLER GLASS

2002-02-20 Thread Bob Rapp

Hi List,
There has been several discussions about the qualities of lenses and,
notably the 55 f1.8. It is reported that some lenses are soft wide open and
improve when shut down. Here is my simple explanation that comes with years
of usage.

Diffraction
In SLRs, there are several sources of diffraction that can soften the
images. First is the diaphragm. As we stop a lens down, the hole becomes
smaller and, as it does, the greater percentage of the image is formed by the
diffracted light. A perfect lens would have its highest resolution wide open
and would be diffraction limited as it is stopped down. The APO-Ronar is one
such lens with a maximum aperture of f9.0.
Design diffraction. These are diffraction sources not related to the
diaphragm. Taking any typical lens and mounting it on a body, opening the back
and the shutter, these sources can be observed. Sighting from a frame corner
and looking through the lens (the film will see what you see) you will note
that the image may be blocked by the edge of the rear element and/or the front
rim of the lens (filters). This is a source of diffraction - out of focus
diffraction. Also, you will note, on most lenses, that the inner barrel of the
lens is visible. Even though it is blackened, even with a good shade, the
level of illumination is significant to project an out of focus image at the
film plane. This is loss of contrast in the corners or softness.
Lastly is the shutter its self. As the shutter curtain or blades travel
along the film plane, a certain percentage of the image will be impacted by
light being diffracted by edges. The narrow the slit width, the greater the
percentage of the image comes from diffracted light. Those that regulararly
use their cameras at speeds less 1/2000 (1/4000 and 1/8000) will notice this
effect, unless these are the only speeds they use. The only value of
1/4000-14000 shutter speeds is a higher flash sync speed usable for fill
flash.
In the case of the 55 f1.8, the secondary diffraction does not go away
until stopped below f5.6. At f1.8, the interior of the lens barrel is highly
visible, at f8, it is one remarkable lens. Our beloved 135 f2.5 SMC Pentax and
SMC Takumar does not fully come good until f11, although the level of impact
at f5.6 to f11 is low.
For me, one habit I developed early, I like to acquaint myself with any
new lens I purchase and do the simple test outlined above. At that point, I
determine my maximum optimum shooting aperture. For normals through wides,
it is f8 to f11 and for longer lenses it is f11 to f22.
I have seen test reports of some fast telephoto lenses (Canon in
particular) for sports usage that are very sharp wide to one stop down.
However at normal aperatures, their performance is well down from quality
normal slower lenses of the same focal length. These are special built lenses
for a special purpose. The ultra-fast (I believe f0.79) from Canon years ago
for their range finder was very ordinary at any aperature.
Of note, there are some fast lenses that I use regularly at wider
apertures. They, of course are the screw Takumars and SMC Ks, and are the 35
f2.0, 50 f1.4 and the 85 f1.8. I use them at f2.8 and click between f2.8 and
f4 and they provided sufficient sharpness for my use. However, for normal
work, the 35 f3.5 and 55 f1.8 and 85 f1.8 are my preferred optics.
For me, shooting a fast lens wide open is a loss of a frame. At times it
is the only way to get the image without a tripod - next time, take a tripod
or look for a suitable support!

Maybe you know - is it possible to find winder for Pentax LX from such

I wish. Unfortunately, no. Which gives you some idea of how

Re: Supermarine, Sea Fury, Sea Venom

2002-02-20 Thread Cotty

Are any of the British list members airshow enthusiasts? I'm thinking
of jumping the pond this summer and attending one of the big English shows,
and it would be nice to touch base beforehand with someone to get some info.

Richard,

I'm not an airshow anorak (geek), but most years the tv company I work
for covers the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in
Gloucestershire (pr: Glos'tur'sher) and accordingly I have filmed at it
many times. Without doubt, it is the biggest military airshow of the
summer, possibly in Europe. It has spent two years at RAF Cottesmore (not
Cottysmore, sadly) while the Fairford runway has been resurfaced - it is
a nominated Shuttle landing station, that is - a designated location for
the NASA space shuttle to use in an emergency.

So the Tatto is back at Fairford this year (usually about 3rd weekend in
July) and should be a good one. However, it *is* big (and I do mean BIG)
with lots of military aircraft from all over the world. Most of it new,
with some historical aspect.

You mention vintage aircraft, and there are soem smaller, perhaps better
shows suited to your interest. One that strikes me in particular is the
'Flying Legends' show held at RAF Duxford every year - usually mid July.
This show is purely vintage, and there are some fantastic opportunities
for photography. I once rigged a minicam in the cockpit of a Mark 4
Spitfire (sadly the pilot declined my offer to squat down behind his seat
while he displayed) and just touching the thing, I could literally
feel the history - quite overwhelming.

So, you won't find any C5 Galaxys at this show, but you will find a (IMO)
more pleasant atmosphere with lots of trade stands selling anythign and
everything, and good access to parked aircraft, and the flying has to be
seen to be believed. The sight and sounds of half a dozen Spits chasing
an ME-109 across English countryside is second only to a shuttle launch,
and even then I have my doubts...

Website is worth a look:

If you're passing near Oxford, gimme a shout.

 My questions are:

How many rolls do you have to process before it becomes
economical, not counting one's own labour?

Also, does it require some setup such as darkroom?

Is there a can-like container of solution that you can buy, in

everything else is as heavy or heavier. Perhaps the 67 gives the

With lens and prism, it weighs less than a Hasselblad 500C with lens and

I think what makes the P67 look so big is its tall prism. Most other

The camera in itself isn't that bad. I mean, a fully loaded EOS-1 and F5
weight about the same, but they are also monsters. It's when you start to
add lenses that the whole thing becomes simply too much (for me). When (or

45/4. Telephotos stops making sense (to me) in the 67 system, particularly

Tamron 70-210 zoom - does adaptall 2 adapt to OUR cameras?

2002-02-20 Thread Paul F. Stregevsky

Ann,

If it's the Tamron Adaptall SP Macro Close Focus 70-210 f/3.5 with a 62mm
filter ring, grab it. Introduced 1984, it's the only non f/2.8 zoom that
may be sharper than the Pentax 70-210/4 PKA. It's an all-metal pro-quality
lens. You can see and appreciate the difference in speed when you focus
through a split-prism rangefinder patch. It has a unique hood that slides
in an out to change length to match the focal length you've selected.

And how about that continuous magnification of 1:2.6X?

Tamron Adaptall adapter for this lens come in two kinds. The PK adapter
will let you use f/32. The PKA adapter will give you all the benefits of a
PKA mount but will limit your minimum aperture to f/22.

If its 860 g weight proves too heavy for you (the Pentax is 680 g), you can
sell it to users of any bayonet mount.

 me). When (or if) I buy a 67 system I'll stick with two lenses only;
the 75/2.8 and the 45/4. Telephotos stops making sense (to me) in the
67 system, particularly when I also own the 645. The 645 system is the
best MF system out there for telephoto work.

I heartily agree about telephotos. I don't have any for my 67, and I'm
not really considering anything past the 300mm (which is a pretty short
telephoto). If I were primarily shooting with longer lenses, I'd
probably either still be all 35mm or I'd have bought a Pentax 645/645n.

I tend to travel light, even with my 35mm gear.

The question was raised, Does the A right-angle finder work with a PZ

Re: Beseler Negative Carrier

The older model for the 23C is aluminum, but it's more than 50% heavier
than the new models, and the aluminum is thicker. It's also designed a
little differently, feels smoother to the touch, and doesn't have the
awful spring-loaded hinge that the newer carrier has, making it easier
for me to load. I have the older model, which came with the condenser
23CII, but the previous owner filed it out to make it a full-frame
carrier, and did a rather poor job of it. What I want is an older
style, standard 35mm carrier, model 8053. Thanks for keeping an eye

Yes ... I'm looking in many venues. Many of the carriers on eBay are
the newer design, or for a different enlarger.

I found a guy who's selling a 35mm carrier for the 23C series, but his
description is quite vague, and he offers no photos. Believe it or not,
he doesn't know the model number (which is stamped on the carrier) and,
since Beseler makes at least four 35mm carriers, eight if you count the
old and the new design separately) and is not able to describe the
carrier adequately, I have no idea what he's selling.

I've just made a photo of the carrier I'm seeking, and will send it to
him. Perhaps he will finally be able to tell me if it's the one I want.

I've got traditional pan-tilt heads and two Giotto ballheads.
Both Giottos have three-knob control (lock, pan, friction); one
is the huge MH-2000 and the other the much smaller MH-1001.
The big Giotto is smooth enough to permit small adjustments,
but I still find pan-tilt preferable for Macro. Maybe if I had
an Arca Swiss ball, I wouldn't be saying this.

As best I can tell, photographers seem about evenly split about
macro: Some still like the pan/tilt, others like big expensive
ballheads.

BTW, the smaller Giotto does well with a light lens and camera
in horizontal, and is usable in vertical with some cussin'.
By light I mean a Super Program and the Phoenix f3.5 100mm Macro.

Hope this helps.

Re: Need Advice: Tripod

2002-02-20 Thread Lon Williamson

Joseph Tainter wrote:

Would appreciate advice for a tripod and ballhead that are lightweight
and compact. This is primarily for flower photography, so it needs to be
able to get close to the ground. Sometimes I'll travel with it.
Primarily I'll use my PZ-1p and FA 100mm. f2.8 macro on it - a rather
 heavy combination.

I've been attracted by the Benbo Trecker, but have seen reports that its
ballhead can slip under heavy weight. Anyone tried it?

 Cost is a consideration.

Two tripods I'd recommend: The newer Bogen 3001 tripods go completely
flat and some models have an option to mount the centerpost
horizontally.
Avoid the older 3001's unless you like to work upside down.

And I bought a Slik 300 DX at the time when the only competitor from
Bogen was the older 3001. I really like the Slik; I find myself carting
it more often than my Bogen 3221 Wilderness when there's any distance to
hike. I don't believe you can find a better aluminum tripod than
this Slik at its price (typically 99 to 115 US dollars, complete with
a usable pan-tilt head).
One option you'd want with it is the short centerpost, which, as I
recall,
cost me about $15 US.

The Slik won't go flat, but it goes quite low at the widest leg spread

What I've heard about Benbo is try it first, and see if you can deal
with the quirks. Apparently, loosening the U bolt makes all the limbs
floppy.

Hope this helps.

Re: FS - 600mm f/4 mint

2002-02-20 Thread jbrooks

Someone bought the lens brand new, then realised it was quite large and
heavy and decided it would never get used. Cambrian is a great place to
visit if you're ever in Colwyn Bay. They hold a really good selection of
used Pentax, often mint and boxed. It's the only shop I've been in that has
had the FA20-35 in stock. The downside is that their prices are quite high
(even for the UK).

According to their web page the lens is used but mint. Anyway, not exactly
cheap and here where I live, where everything generally is more expensive
than anywhere else, the lens can probably be had brand new for same kind of

My experience trying to clean a LX screen

2002-02-20 Thread Albano_Garcia

Hi, gang
First, thanks to all who helped with tips.
Yesterday I tried to clean the screen.
First, removed it, and to my surprise discovered the dirt was not in the
screen. It was in the condenser or whatever name the glass where the
numbers are printed, the one between the screen and the prism.
Tryed different methods to clean it, including lens cloth (a good one), q
tip with alcohol, air blower, but without success. When I removed some,
added some new.
At least I mastered the screen changing method

Re: DOF with close up lenses

2002-02-20 Thread Mark Cassino

Yes - Shaw's Closeups in Nature is definitely worth the read, so too is
the Kodak workshop series book on close up. photography. The Kodak book has
more of the formulae than Shaw's, but you almost need both of them to get a
complete picture.

Shaw has changed his mind on some points in later books - he now advocates
using a 200mm macro vs the 100mm he recommended in the earlier book, TTL
flash vs manual flash, and zooms for general work vs primes. But the
essence remains the same and is very valuable.

Poor SMC Pentax 15/3.5 in a (Gasp!) Nikon Mount

2002-02-20 Thread Fred

I've been watching an interesting eBay auction that recently ended
(http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1333228569).
Up for grabs was an SMC Pentax 15/3.5 lens in a Nikon mount. The
auction title was 15mm f3.5 lens By Pentax for Nikon, and the lens
was described as an inexpensive way to get very wide on your
Nikon.

There were a few small marks on the front element which may or may
not affect the image quality, and the lens sold at $310 USD. For a
Nikon user, I guess that's a pretty attractive price for a 15/3.5,
considering that in another recent auction
(http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1333128992)for
a Nikon 15/3.5 ended at $713, and without the reserve being met -
that lens has now been relisted
(http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1334255176).

Anyhow, back to the bastardized Pentax 15/3.5, I'm assuming that
some camera shop someplace must have perpetrated some sort of an
evil mount conversion, right?

Well, I just let all my lenses know about this poor 15/3.5, so that
they know from now on they'll have to all be extra good (defined as
sharp and contrasty), OR they too could end up being damned to
some forlorn Nikon existence. As I left the room I overheard a
couple of primes discussing this, and one of them (a wide-angle, but
you know how sort-sighted they tend to be) suggested oh - that poor
SMC must have really blew an entire roll of film, or something.

Hmmm... Being born a Pentax but ending up as a Nikon - it must be
sort of like being assimilated into the Borg, I would think... :-(

;-)

So you consider the Nikon F5 too heavy to carry by hand or by neckstrap?

Yes - Shaw's Closeups in Nature is definitely worth the read, so too is
the Kodak workshop series book on close up. photography. The
 Kodak book has
more of the formulae than Shaw's, but you almost need both of
 them to get a
 complete picture.

Shaw has changed his mind on some points in later books - he now
 advocates
using a 200mm macro vs the 100mm he recommended in the earlier book,

The choice of 50,100,or 200 for macro is the same as non-macro, it depends
on what angle of view you want. I cant imagine shooting macro only
at 200 as it compresses normal perspective too much.

 TTL
 flash vs manual flash,

manual flash using an incidence flash meter is
better than ttl IMHO, except where it is impossible
to know correct exposure compensation in severe
magnification shots.

and zooms for general work vs primes.
Both zooms and primes have their advantages and
disadvantages. Neither one is always the best way to go.

  But the
essence remains the same and is very valuable.

2002-02-20 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Hi Fred ...

I think you've got that a little backwards. I'd suggest that the Nikon
is sucking up to the Pentax lens - dare I say, perhaps even kissing its
butt g.

But seriously, over the years it's been rather common for many
photographers to modify a lens that they like, or which has some
preferred characteristics, to fit on and work with other cameras. It's
quite a compliment, don't you think?

You know, the story is that HC-B always used Leicas, and leitz lenses,
but it's been reported by Beaumont Newhall that HC-B, on one of his
trips to NY, picked up a Contax lens that he had modified to fit his
Leica III - so maybe not all of HC-B's stuff was the result of Leitz
optics after all. IAC, I can think of a number of instances where I'd
have liked an optic from one company on a body from another. There are
certainly a few Olympus lenses I'd like to adapt to the K-mount,
likewise for some Leica glass. And let's not forget that the 43mm Ltd
was made in a Leica mount, and it receives some very positive comments
from the users.

The 35mm

While I recognize that this is a generalization, I cannot help

wonder why SLR lenses are nowhere near as good wide open as RF

The flange to focal plane distance made necessary by the mirror

Re: P67 myth

2002-02-20 Thread Pat White

People are seeming to forget that the P67 is not a 35, although it may look like one.
A lone photographer can carry an extensive 35 outfit and be ready for anything. With
any SLR 6x7, you'd nearly need a cart. With the big camera, you have an idea what
you'd like to shoot, and bring only what you need.

With the big neg, telephotos aren't as essential, and you probably won't be bringing
as much film, as you don't bang off shots like you do with a 35.

At present, I bring just the camera, 105 and 165 lenses, a meter and a polarizer, and
a few rolls of film (someday, I'll add a 45/f4). Plus a tripod or monopod, of course.
The bag is smaller and weighs less than my 35mm bag. Sometimes I get tired of
lugging the extensive 35 outfit and go for the simple back-to-basics style. It's
supposed to be fun, isn't it?

Also, how often do you see someone walking around with a Mamiya RZ67? Chances are,
there are more recreational users of P67s than of any other 6x7 SLRs. I like it in
the studio and on the street.

RE: New Pentax MZ-60

2002-02-20 Thread Albert Fekson

Hello fellow Pentaxians,

First let me thank all of you for your input to my macro setup question,
your responses really opened up a world of possibilities.

I was following the news of the new Pentax body with interest and was struck
with an notion that Pentax seems to be updating their entire 35mm SLR.
lineup. If that is the case, we can most likely expect to see an update to
ZX-5N/3N cameras sometime late this year. If this comes to pass, I made up a
list of features that I think would be appropriate (and desirable)
enhancements to an already great camera. Here goes:

1. Deletion of the useless Panoramic function.
2. AF system from MZ-S
3. Brighter finder, new data display on the bottom of the finder instead of
current position, and can they please make it more legible outdoors.
4. P-TTL with synch at 1/125 + HSS
5. Mirror lock-up or pre-fire.
6. Film leader out function
7. Stronger film drive, every time that it rewinds I feel like the darn
thing will give up the ghost.
8. Grip - make it a bit larger.
9. Keep the knobs.
10. Max shutter speed of 1/4000

I am sure that Pentax can implement these without major hassles. Extra
functions can be set my combo of a ML and another multifunction button
located where the panoramic switch is right now. I think that the following
updates will make the camera more appealing to many people considering
Pentax cameras vs. those other brands. It will be a shame if Pentax lets the
5N hang out in the cold jut like they did with PZ-1p.

Just my $0.02

Best regards,
Albert

It's a great lens! It, and the K24/3.5 are considered to be excellent.
Some say the 3.5 has a minimal amount less distortion, but I've not
found any objectionable distortion in my sample of the 2.8 - it's a
keeper!

Be sure to get a good lens hood for it, though. It's wide enough that
you've got to be careful about stray light. The Nikon HN-1 and HN-2 are
good choices. I prefer the HN-2 as it's a little deeper, but it may
vignette if you use a pol filter or a really thick filter. I've not
encountered vignetting, but I don't use filters too often.
