There is a lot of different arguments both for and against pre-soaking film.

Argument for: Provides more even development. I would agree if I were using
Nikor tanks with a small opening and it took me 15 seconds to add the
developer. In addition, if the film developer combination calls for a time
of 4 minutes or less, pre-soak. Pre-soaking the film will cause the gelatine
to swell. At this point, the developer must diffuse into the emulsion where
as if it were not pre-soaked the developer would begin immediately.

Arguments against. It has been proven that minimising the total wet time
improves the negative quality. This is because of the fact that the grains
will migrate through the emulsion. Primary reason that I do not pre-soak, no
not use a stop and always use a rapid fix without hardener - one shot. I
have adopted my methods to include the "Ilford" washing method as it greatly
reduces the wet time by minimising the wash time.

Re: 2nd cheap body please help

2002-06-01 Thread frank theriault

Hi, Wayne,

I don't know about the non-Pentax products that you mention, but the K1000
doesn't have dof preview.

Having an MX, I do know that it can be coaxed to lock up the mirror by lightly
flicking the shutter release with a fingernail (it helps if you practise).
Whether this is actually designed into the shutter release, or is something
unintended, that users have discovered is (I believe) a matter of conjecture, but
it does work. BUT, it doesn't have an MLU switch or button per se. The other
Pentaxes you mention may have this "feature", I don't know.

And of course, the Pentaxes you mention have mechanical shutters, that work
without batteries, the batteries powering only the meters - but of course you
already knew that...

frank

2002-06-01 Thread Shel Belinkoff

Hi Bob ...

I use the "Ilford" wash method as well. However, I recently read that
the correct way to do this is to allow the tank to sit for five minutes
after each inversion cycle before draining and refilling. While this
saves water it does little to reduce wet time.

Which procedure do you follow? What are your thoughts on the subject?

Re: Pre-Rinse in Development Land ?

2002-06-01 Thread Bob Rapp

Hi Shel,
Like with prints, the choice of fixers determines the washing time.
Plain hypo is a pain and have not used it in years. My total wash time is
about 15 minutes.
I think the key is with each fill and adjitation cycle allow the
residule fixer to difuse to the water quicker due to the decreasing abounts
of fixer in the water and film.
I would not consider using it with sodium theosulphate without a
clearing agent or rapid fixer with a hardner. I reciently reprinted some
35mm negs from 30 and 15 years ago and there has been no signs of bleaching.
So, I guess, what I have been doing has worked for me.

ZX-5N Lens Problem

2002-06-01 Thread chuck

While shooting the last frame on a roll yesterday, the
zoom lens that came with my ZX-5n had some strange
problems. First, the manual zoom ring froze, locked up,
and would not move in either direction. Then the AF
mechanism seemed to bind so that it did not move all
the way into focus.

Later, at home, I looked closer at the lens, saw nothing
unusual, and tried to move the zoom ring again. It
quite suddenly freed up. And now the AF works jes'
fine again.

What might have happened? And should I get it looked at
now, even though it seems to be well again.

thanks,

I had this happen once quite a few years ago (although I think it
actually was an ME Super). My remedy (successful!) was to squirt
just a bit of "TV contact cleaner" (from Radio Shack) and then to
fire the camera a bunch of times. (My thought was that it was an
oxidized electrical contact, which the cleaner might "un-oxidize"
(reduce, I guess, in chemical terms). Well, it worked...

Nothing wrong with a good clean KX! It wasn't in production long and was a
major detractor from Pentax's flag ship K2 of that period. I have one and
love it. A very suitable backup to a LX - even more so than the MX - a nifty

crutches to fasten a small ball mount - you might as well use one of
the crutches as a monopod - after all, you'll be using a long lens
now, since you won't be getting close to anything (except your
crutches) for 8 weeks - .

My first simple darkroom was my kitchen - I was single at the time and it
served no useful purpose other than photography at the time.

What I did was to consturct some insertable panels constructed of masonite
and 2x2s. I allowed enough clearance around the parameter for simple BLACK
weather striping. If the misses permits, lay down some black plastic tape
around the parameter so that it will slide in and out easily.

The ProgramPlus is excellent: handles well, feels good, looks good, very
rugged

---body larger than ME-Super fits bitter in large hands
---first 2 shots of new roll automatically go to 1/1000 speed so you

and advance with mode auto/lens cap on.
---uses ME-II winder (although a bit noisy to me)

Super Program lens coupling: I've ruined another

2002-06-01 Thread Paul F. Stregevsky

I went out Friday to shoot a street sign of the middle school play with my
Super Program and Vivitar Series One 90-180 macro with Portra 160. The
shutter speed read 4 seconds, no matter what aperture I chose. Having seen
this problem before, I knew at once what had happened: I had inserted the
lens carelessly, mangling the autodiaphragm coupling (or something like
that). The weekend before, I had hurriedly inserted the Vivitar so that my
daughter could take a close-up of a small frog.

The first time the coupling broke, I had been careless in removing a Pentax
M42 adapter ring. But I didn't suspect I had to exercise care when
installing a K-mount lens.

Sure enough, I can't remove the lens. It wiggles but won't come out.
Someone at the store will be able to remove it.

I have two Super Programs, and I hope this is the one for which I bought a
4-year warranty. But I feel awful asking the store to fix it a second time
when it was almost certainly my fault. I'll tell them the truth; the
warranty covers carelessness.

Now that I think of it, Pentax lenses seem to go in and out more easily
than third-party and Ricoh lenses. I dunno; I think that on other brands
the coupling sticks out farther.

During Thursday night's shoot of the school play, I was swapping lenses
from behind the tripod-mounted cameras (KX and Sears) and having a hard
time of inserting the lenses. From now on, I'll stand in front of the body
when inserting a lens.

By the way, I shot the sign at the mechanical speed of 1/125 second at f/16.

The softbox gives more controllable light, but it's bulky when you're not using it,
and usually can't be fitted to a shoe-mount type flash, while an umbrella can, with a
Manfrotto Lite-Tite. It's good to have both. I've seen umbrellas at discount prices

ERNR

Hi,
the Af-adapter will only be able to focus the
adapter-lens unit to infinity, if the lens is set to
infinity.
This is because the adapter focuses by moving it's own
lens group and not that by moving that of the lens; so
at 'infinity', both the adapter and the lens must be
set to infinity.

OTOH when, in the AF mode, the adapter is not able to
focus close enough, preset the lens to a closer
distance. Then the AF adapter will be able to
auto-focus on nearer subjects, however it will not
focus to infinity. The distance indicated at the scale
of lens the does not correpond to the actual film to
subject distance.

When the Af-adapter is locked to infinity it works
like any other teleconverter. In this case you can
manually focus the lens and the distance indicated at
the distance scale of the lens correponds to the
actual film to subject distance.

Hope this helps,

I once shot at 300mm from the prone position on a mountaineering trip,
because I didn't have a tripod. I don't remember what the shutter speed

Yes, it's pretty good stuff. (It's not a panacea, though, of
course, and squirting it into the innards of a camera body is indeed
a little risky - .)

Coincidentally, I recently bought a new can of the stuff, to use

Opposable thumbs separate us (if you mean "humans" as "us") from
most (but certainly not all) lower animals. However, I am not sure
if, in balance, the fruits of this separation have been good or bad
for the rest of creation. (Actually, I do have a personal answer to

Pentax-related content: I just sold my K-mount Zenitar 85/1.4 to a

Centon 500mm f8 mirror lens filters

2002-06-01 Thread James Adams

For those interested, I mentioned casually about a month ago that I thought
my Centon 500mm f8 mirror lens might take rear filters, and today I
confirmed it.

While I was unscrewing the lens from my SPF, the T-adapter(?) stayed
attached to the camera. It was then I noticed a M30.5 KM-500 Skylight 1A
filter screwed into the back of the Centon lens. This must have come with
the lens when I bought it from Jessops.

I bought a 72mm Skylight 1A filter to fit to the front of the lens, and that
was expensive, but it at least protects the lens.

all see it?

Once again, here is the deal:

Here are the (suggested) guidelines:

1) I will produce a series of negatives, as close as is possible
to each other in exposure and processing (I can get REALLY
close, I am pretty good at this stuff), and mail each
participant a negative.

2) The negative remains the property of me, and is considered
"on loan" for the duration of the challenge.
Copyright of any images made from this negative remain property
of William Robb, Regina, Canada.

3) When you recieve the negative in the mail, please acknowledge
reciept of it to me via email, and then make the best prints you
can. All
criteria other than paper size are the decision of the printer,
the idea is to see how other people decide how to print a
negative.

4) For the sake of uniformity, all prints shall be made on 8x10
inch paper, unmounted.
Prints shall be by traditional darkroom methods.

5) Please write your name on the back of your prints, for
identification purposes.

6) After you have created your print, please ship the negative
and the finished print to me. I will keep track of things until
I have recieved all the prints.

7) At that point, I will scan them and put them on a web page,
and also make the entire set available for distribution to
participants so we can see what we have done.

My home address is on the envelopes containing the negatives.
Please ship your 6 prints back to me. I will compile the
portfolios and ship them out.

Now, how to distribute them after that?

To make sure everyone gets a fair shot at this, I need to have
the prints back in a reasonable amount of time. Please, get at
the task of printing as soon as possible after you recieve the
negative.

Here is the list of participants, and how I have determined
groups for each portfolio. If it would make more sense to have
them grouped otherwise, I am open to suggestion.
What I will do is provide forwarding addresses to each
participant when I send out the portfolio. You will be
responsible for making notes for discussion, and mailing it on
to the next person on the list. Again, try to make the time you
keep the portfolio in your possession reasonable, as we want
everyone to get a look at it.
After we have all had a look, I ask that the prints be returned
to me.
If there is interest from non printing members of the PDML to
have a look at a portfolio, I will make them available to list
members, perhaps having them shipped directly from the last
printer on the list to a list member.

Replacement foam

Now that my meter is funtioning properly on my Super A, I need to replace
the foam. I have seen kits on E-bay, has anybody used them or have a good
source for the material? The foam is completly gone and needs replacement

8"x10" paper is specified. If you don't have that available,
take the next size up from that dimension and trim it to 8"x10",
or its metric equivalent.
Other than that, you are on your own.

I haven't used the kits on ebay, but I have gone here:

Re: Color Film Questions

2002-06-01 Thread Bmacrae

Shel,

Here's an idea...

To desaturate any color film (and to reduce contrast in B/W), preflash the
roll first. This should desaturate the colors more than picking a particular
kind of film.

Have you ever seen Altman's "McCabe and Mrs. Miller?" Shot by the talented
Vilmos Zsigmond, the entire film was shot on preflashed color negative to
desaturate the look and mute the colors. I think it produced a very unique
look.

Just another way to go.

You can have it repaced. You are not supposed to do that yourself,

Compressed air might do the job, but the dirt and dust may end up in
places where it hurts *much* more, like between the shutter blades or in
the film chamber (causing scratches on the film). Since the fluff is on
the screen: Learn to live with it (if you don't dare to touch it with a
soft brush), it won't affect the images on film.

Arghh! Scratched film

2002-06-01 Thread Joseph Tainter

Following some posts, I opened the back of the 1p that has been
producing scratched negatives. I carefully brushed out all debris, then
went over accessible surfaces (except the shutter, of course) with a
soft cloth. The interior now looks pretty clean. Then I ran a roll of
cheap film through it, and rewound leaving the leader out. Sure enough,
there's the scratch, apparently being caused by the pressure plate.

Here's the annoyance: I've cleaned the pressure plate, and gone over it
with a 15x hand lens. I cannot see anything that could be causing the
scratch. I've run my finger over every surface that could be causing a
scratch to check for any rough spots. I've cleaned everything.

Any recommendations? It's June 1, and I don't want to send the camera to
Pentax for half the summer.

Thanks,

Joe

Well, I should tell Laura about all the positive comments on her

The Ricoh and Chinon should lock the mirror up when the self timer is
engaged but otherwise don't offer this feature. The Ricoh XR-1 does have
DoF preview and all manual speeds and sounds like the closest thing to
what you want other than a KX.

Re: Color Film Questions

2002-06-01 Thread Paul Stenquist

Portra NC 160, when rated at the suggested speed is quite unsaturated
and muted. In fact, I find it a bit lacking in punch and expose it about
a half stop over. However for certain things where I want muted tones, I
expose it at the advertised speed. Transparency film is a bit trickier,
because it's a one step process. But I've found that Ektachrome 100WS is
reasonably subtle, due to its warm tonality. Overexposing it by about
1/4 stop gives it a somewhat muted feel.

My web page

2002-06-01 Thread talampaya

Sometime ago someone (Dan?) underlined how this list is too much
"gear-oriented", and very few posts did concern our pictures. All we
PUGsters are eagerly waiting for Cotty's monthly review, and I do praise all
the fellow pdml-ers who devote their time to comment our submissions (and I
do quite envy their English; I'd like to send comments, too, but I think you
must master the language to do properly a criticism, and I don't...).
So, sometimes we do receive good comments for our pictures, but...
But it should be better, IMHO, to receive comments for our mistakes, too. As
someone pointed out (William Robb?) we can improve our results by studying
our errors. I know there are a lot of fine photographers in the list (some
of them - Shel - do seldom submit in the PUG - why???), and they could
help me to improve!
So I planned to build my web page, where I could upload some pics to receive
your comments and criticism. Obviously, I do like the pictures I put in the
site, but I wonder how another photographer would have shot or cropped the
same image.
As I'm a quite authentic html illiterate, I did use the Tripod's webbuilder,
so - please - criticize the pictures, not the web page's layout!
The url is: http://utenti.lycos.it/tucuman
TIA to all of you who will devote a little time for me.

But is that what the wash does? I was lead to believe that the length of wash
