Are Giotto ballheads good?

If not, what is a good ballhead (with rotating base) for 35mm+400mm
or 645+200mm (or a total maximum weight of 2,5 kg)? Price is a
factor, weight not.

Minor *ist D Surgery

2005-06-09 Thread John Celio
Yesterday my special order arrived from Pentax: the LL-60 divided matte
focusing screen for the *ist D/DS.

Today I kept pestering my shop's tech to swap my screens for me, because
I've been know to f**k up such things, but he was super busy.

Tonight I said to myself, "Aw, hell with it," and did it myself. Was very
nervous, but now I can compose much more easily, and I can keep horizon
lines straight! Yay!

Did you know these things are plastic? I wonder if that has anything to do
with the slightly warm/yellowish cast the Pentax digitals seem to have in
their viewfinders.

2005-06-09 Thread David Oswald
I have a speck of dust that just appeared on the diaphram of my SMC
Pentax-FA 50mm f/1.4. Obviously this isn't going to affect image
quality, but I'm wondering if its something I ought to have cleaned in
the interest of keeping the lens in optimal condition. The speck
doesn't affect diaphram movement, and from what I can tell it's close
enough to the inner edge of one diaphram blade that even with the
diaphram wide open it doesn't come in contact with the next blade.

Obsessing? Or should I have it cleaned?

yes, Gitzo uses their own QR plates, but you can remove the stock threaded
support and substitute any Arca-Swiss-compatible QR system clamp from Kirk
Photo or Really Right Stuff. the rub is that the clamp will cost you more
than your budget. there are generic plates for the LX, some of which will
fit the *istD. they are not cheap new, although much less expensive than a
dedicated plate. the Gitzo 1377M with the Really Right Stuff LLR-II QR clamp
will set you back about $325 street prices, and then you have to add plates.

There was something very exhilarating knowing that if you weren't
carefully and skilled, you could easily end up in the weeds. Of course,
you're right about replacing the tires. Rarely did I see a muscle car
running around on stock rubber. Crager SS wheels and fatter tires were the
first mods often made to those cars, some even came with factory options
for beefier wheels/tires, then came the Hurst shifter (if it wasn't already
installed from the factory). I loved the smell of burning rubber at

Thanks Shel. I'm not wild about the ultra long lens compression myself.
But the magazine art directors love it. I did some with the K 135/2.5

they'll have a choice. I did use up the best light on the 400, because

Hi Paul ...

My heart rumbles and beats irregularly as did that 426

While in general it's a nice pgoto - the red set off against the
background, the soft (early morning?) lighting and gentle fog adding to the
atmosphere) - I think the compression effect of the 400mm lens gives the
car a slightly askew look.

Love it! The tire and doorway (is that what it is, on the right of
the frame?) really work well in the composition.

I know it's a work in progress, but I find that her arms and hands are
a smidge blown out. I find it hard to see the cigarette in her hand,
which I'd think to be an important part of the image. I also wish I
could see the smoke she's blowing a bit better. Maybe these can be
fixed with further fiddling?

Other than those things, I think it's a great shot. You caught her in
a rough spot, but rather tenderly, I think.

all taken in the Adirondacks. all of the heron shots were taken with an
A*400/2.8 with a 1.7X extender. most of the heron images are full frame. the
birds were about 60 yards away in the middle of a drowned forest. the
sunsets required gradient ND filters. the waterfalls used a B+W 6-stop ND
filter plus a polarizing filter. two of the waterfall shots are stacked
exposures to capture the full dynamic range. i didn't have Photoshop CS2
when i created the images for posting, so i did it using my Optipix plugins,
which are almost as convenient. nowadays, i would use Merge to HDR instead.

I always seem to have trouble with security people.
I don't know why.
I went through security in Regina, which involved being wanded and then
frisked. I figured that was it.
In Minneapolis, I wandered right past the checkpoint.
For a moment, I thought the guy was actually going to unholster
his firearm.
After they let me get dressed again, I was on my way.

TSA people are paid extra to have absolutely no sense of humour.

Arrived at Charlotte and picked up my car. I had originally rented a
compact, and I was afraid that was what they would give me. When the offer
was made that for a mere 10 dollars extra, I could have a full size, I
jumped at the chance.
When she found out I was heading for the hills, she upgraded me to a sport
utility at the same price, on the premise it would be good to
have the extra
power in the mountains.

In Canada, we drive 100 on the highway.
Piece of crap vehicle they gave me would barely go that fast.
I figured it out before I got a ticket.

By the time I got to Linville, I hadn't had anything to eat since
breakfast,
so I stopped at a gas station and bought a slice of pizza.
Were it not for extreme hunger, I would have been insulted that
it was sold
as food.

Half an hour later, Crabby Bill arrived at the mountain.
The welcome was warm, the beer was cold.
The rain was falling.
Ann probably saved Frank's life by making me a sandwich.
After some excellent conversation, sleep was attempted.
New bed and excitement about the weekend made for a somewhat sleepless
night.

"That's not how it is, Dave"

And then it was morning.
And still the rain fell.
Some of us ended up at the visitor center's restaurant for breakfast.
There is a wall in the visitor centre where past GFM contest winners
photographs are displayed.
The Charles Braswell Gallery Wall, I believe.
Anyway, I saw that and decided that probably I should just go back to the
campground and drink beer for the rest of the weekend.

And still the rain fell.
At some point, Graywolf showed up with some excellent lager, and we did a
small product set up on the picnic table.
Here then is the official 2005 PDML/GFM Film is Dead photograph.
Shot on digital, of course.

Re: Digital viewfinder for any camera

2005-06-09 Thread Herb Chong
it has the same application as any right angle finder. if you trust your
camera's autofocus, it would be a good replacement for the right angle
finder, and it has more adjustments. if battery life isn't adequate, it
wouldn't be so good.

Re: Giotto ballheads

2005-06-09 Thread Herb Chong
new, i wouldn't want to use any $125 head with much more than a 300/4.
having the panning base with a separate lock makes it a higher end ball
head, so for $125US, you will have to go the used route. it should be doable
and in decent condition. i have a Gitzo 1377M i'm not using much, but it's
been promised to a friend already. it would meet your requirements, both
performance and price.

GFM Report Pt. 2

2005-06-09 Thread William Robb

So, where did I leave off.
Of course, it was the film cameras arranged on the picnic table, their
angst ridden owners having abandoned them for digital cameras.
I had to go to get my film to waste, so Graywolf and I wandered to the
Braswell Gallery, where I got my film.
Tom had lunch and we spent some time together enjoying each other's company
and conversation.
Tom showed me around the wildlife habitats, and then it was back to the
picnic area for more beer.
At some point on Friday, Ann and I went off on an adventure in frustrating
shopping, but we found a charming little barbecue place, and we had a nice
lunch there.

Saturday went by in a bit of a blur, I recall several beers of various
qualities (mostly good, sorry about he Budweiser).

I should mention, I did make the effort to shoot the slide film required for
the contest.
We'll say no more about that.

Hung out with the gang up at the restaurant on Saturday after dropping my
film off.

Saw a somewhat disjointed presentation on Saturday PM dedicated to
Photoshop. Learned lots though.
I saw the presenter in the bathroom later. He didn't seem to reflect in a
mirror.

Most odd.

At some point, Ken Waller had his 600/4 set up.
As an equipment junkie, I found this to be pig heaven.
Ken's got a pretty decent portfolio too. If I was half that good, I would be
an excellent photographer.
Frank had a book of pictures, they look better in person than on the web,
for sure.
Ann had a bunch of pictures that she had brought along, as did Mark.
Talented photographers both, they are.

I kept saying over and over that I wished I had remembered to bring my
portfolio, while being somewhat relieved that I had avoided the
embarrassment of showing my pathetic attempts at photography around this
lot.

Norm showed up late in the afternoon and introduced himself as Brad Dobo.
After the bruising in his face died down, I discovered who he really
was..

You guys really should have tried the coffee I left on the picnic table. It
is really very nice.
Norm brought me an F300/4.5 lens that I accidentally enabled myself
with back in early April.
Darned vendor insisted on UPS shipping, I didn't want to risk their
international division on something this rare and valuable.

César brought some wonderful Napa Valley wine with him, and I eagerly
(perhaps too eagerly) tied into it.
I suspect I may have played a part in the gate not being opened for sunrise.
I kept Doug and César up rather late on Saturday night.

Sunday dawned warm and muggy, and just got warmer and muggier. Went up to
the presentations, and had breakfast with Don Nelson and Phyllis Owens.
Don introduced me as the farthest traveler this year. Not sure if I was or
not.

After the presentations, we went back and helped tear down PDML central, and
after many goodbyes, and promises of making it back next year off we went,
Bill in the lead, and Phyllis making sure I didn't get lost.

I think I saw the gang setting off fireworks in celebration of my departure.
We missed a group picture this year, so you all are gonna have to put up
with me at least one more time.

Anyway, that pretty much covers the high points of the trip, I am sure I
have missed a few things, and I'm not going to say anything about the
unfortunate incident with the rental car's remote control.

'twas fun, and I am looking forward to doing it again.
The area is incredibly scenic, and Southern hospitality deserves the
legendary status it has.

I'll put a small website up in a day or three.
We have the dog show this weekend, so it will likely be into next week
before that happens.

Bill, I know you're an HC-110 advocate. I've never used that particular
developer. Any comments wrt how it might work with some of what I want to
do? Long tones, low contrast, soft look with lots of detail ... maybe the
dilute mixture would be the way to go?

HC:110 is a high capacity low solvent developer. I got turned onto it when I
got the Jobo, and needed a film developer that would process a lot of square
inches/liter.
It is also one of the older developer formulations that Kodak has. It's been
around for a very long time.

While I think that most of what you describe is lens related, HC:110 might
make a very nice complement to what you are attempting as well.
