Well, yes and no. I'm never in any doubt as to which one I am using,
but most of the controls are in the same general position. That isn't
true for ISO, though - the K10D eliminated a drawback of the *ist D.

Right. Much more correct to say "strap on a normal lens and go for

I vote for the full frame version. The square crop feels cramped to me.
The foreground in the full frame version makes the image balance quite
nicely for me.

I don't know your feelings on this sort of thing, but if that was my photo,

Re: PESO: On Magnolia Plantation 2

Thanks, Jack. I've checked it on 3 calibrated
monitors, and the brightness is where it should be.
The colors in the rags are rather drab in reality, and
I increased the saturation considerably in LR. Since
I was shooting at ISO 800, noise limited the amount I
could boost things.

The wood tripod has advantages and disadvantages. They are very good at

pretty sure the Zone
VI tripods are no longer available new, and I doubt that they are easily found
on the used
market either. Berlenbach used to be very good, they would be a good brand to
look at as well.
If you are looking for a high end tripod (wood is definitely high end), then
also look at the
carbon fibre ones as well. They are almost as good as wood for damping
vibration, and weigh a
lot less.
I don't know about cost comparisons. Gitzo makes good ones, I am sure there are
others out
there, possibly better or more cost effective than Gizo.

I do own a couple of metal tripods, a Montrotto 028 with an 029 (229 now),
which has given me
little to complain about, other than the lower column stabilizer falling apart
in front of Tom
Cakalic a few years ago.
I never did get it reassembled, I suppose I should.
I also have a Manfrotto 055 with what would now be a 115 head. It has the same
problem as
Jerome's tripod, with the added bonus feature of a self welding head.
I did find a grease at the auto parts store that is supposed to prevent
dielectric welding. I
must see if it fixes that problem sometime.

In my opinion it does not distratct from the photo. Th one that could
distract a bit more, the orange reflection, can be seen as part of the child

Hi Everyone:

I'm very interested in knowing your views on the the following: I shot this

photo through a McDonald's window &, in addition to catching the main
subject of the photo, I caught reflections in the window. I would very much

like to know the degree to which these reflections, in your view, greatly
distract from the photo. Any other annoyances are of interest as well.

It's *your* ballpark. Charge what you want! That's the beauty of not being
a "pro" in my humble opinion. You've got no bills to pay with this cash,
so charge what you feel comfortable with. This way everyone is happy. If
they accept the price, then you'll feel compensated and they'll get their
product.
>From there, based on demand and your desire to continue, work your price
up (or down) as you see fit.

That may not be helpful, but that's my 2 cents.

Christine,
I think the reflections are a minor disturbance and not really a distraction.
The expressions on the faces and story you tell here more than make up for it.

Re: Pets in your home, photos and fee

2008-03-29 Thread P. J. Alling
This will be the most frustrating photography you'll engage in in your
life. Pets make children look like a walk in the park. Charge twice
that and guarantee a free re-shoot, (after the pet calms down), if none
of the pictures are good enough, Quite often they won't be.

Pets in your home, photos and fee

2008-03-29 Thread David J Brooks
My wife works in a Pet Valu food store, and takes in my meager photos
of our cats and friends dogs as part of their monthly
specials and to help in adding extra photo work my way.

I have heard a lot of good comments from these photos, and some of
their customers have new dogs and cats
and have inquired if i would be available to do a shoot.

Of course i am, they just have to get dates organized etc, but i;'m at
odds for rates.

Just recently in the Toronto Star newspaper, they had a 1/2 page
article on a couple of pet photographers scattered around Canada,
Toronto, Vancouver and another city i forget.
These people were charging upwards of $1400 for the sitting and CD.
One was a very experienced person, the other two just getting in to
it.

I have no intention of charging these rate, but i feel a shoot at a
place both owner and animal are comfortabel with, own home, local park
etc would be best. Try some posed shots, follow the animal around and
grab the animal doing its thing candids.

Not sure if i explained that well, but hopefully YKWIM.

Travel would be minimal, we are still a small town, but i feel it
would be appropriate for my experience, and sense of fair play, that
a rate of $50-60 for an hour shoot, and put a CD together add another
$50-60 for time, PS work, maybe a bit more for a musical slideshow
etc..

Oh, I agree :-) That's why I, among many other D owners here, waited
for the K10D to come along before purchasing a new body. But then I
love the two-wheel ergonomics I had on the PZ-1p; although I did get
the MZ-S when it came out for the improved auto-focus I never really
took to it, and continued to use the PZ-1p a lot of the time.

What I like best about the K10D, though, is the additional shooting
modes (promoting ISO almost to a par with shutter speed & aperture) -
an unexpected bonus from a feature I initially mostly discounted.

Wimberley. (envious sigh). One day I'll try one of those things.

Problem is, I use the 400mm so infrequently that I can barely justify
buying a lens cloth for it, let alone a new tripod or head. I think today
was the first time I used it in about 4 years, if not longer. And if I
can't get this tripod thing figured out, it may be another four before the
next.

So... what your saying is that your a huge fan of Bogen tripods, eh?
LOL... Thanks though. You hit it on the head...

> The flip lever style of lock will barely hold the

I guess that's the type I'm talking about, and the other one is the snap
lock that you mentioned. Or do I still have it backwards? Anyway, I
see your point either way: Your vote is for a different tripod altogether.
Can't say I have the money now (just got the two new DA* lenses) but I'll
keep that in mind. Either way, the damn thing is supposed to hold up to 26
pounds... so it's a little frustrating that it can't do what it's supposed
to (but then I guess that's your point).

> either the 028, which is a very heavy beast,

I cannot even fathom getting a HEAVIER tripod than I already own. As it
stands, the 3036 is about twice my body weight (at least it feels that way
sometimes). Anyhow, thanks again! I'll let you know the verdict.

I don't recall what Ken uses, I think he changed tripods since I met him. I use
a Zone VI
Standard wood tripod under a Wimberley gimbal head with my 600mm lens. It is an

I should join this club. I have four macro lenses, none of which I use all that
regularly. I use
the 200/4 the most, followed by the A100/2.8. Haven't used the 50/4 for years,

Christine,

Thanks for the reply. For my lighter, less expensive tripod (3221) I do
have the tool you mentioned and know exactly what you're talking about...
but that doesn't seem to work for the 3036 for whatever reason. The legs
just keep on sliding...

Thanks though. Hopefully Manfrotto / Bogen Co. will have some good news
for me. Or maybe one of the big glass wielders like Cassino or Waller will
chime in with a similar experience.

Manfrotto seems to have used a few different styles of leg lock on that tripod,
and frankly,
they all are crap. The flip lever style of lock will barely hold the weight of
the tripod when
new, and just gets worse as the unit wears out, which takes about 3 set up and
tear down cycles.
The snap lock is just about as bad, but can't be adjusted to work properly.
I would never trust that tripod with a lens as heavy as a 400/2.8. I think you
need to look at
either the 028, which is a very heavy beast, but it at least has decent leg
locks, or else
perhaps look at a Gitzo or one of the wood tripods.

Delicious! I like the haze/fog/whatever in the sky around the tower

has the feel of something in Morocco or something like that, not the
heart of Silicon Valley.

I think I like the square one better because one can see more detail

But now that I've said it, I'm flipping back and forth between the two

And the handgrip is significantly smaller on the D. I found the DS to
be the best handling of the Pentax bodies due to having the largest
and most ergonomic grip. The K100D is very similar while the K10D has
less depth to the grip than a DS, but much more than the D.

Funny you should mention the MZ-S. It took me FOREVER to sell it even
though I knew I had no further use for it. I just loved the ergonomics of
it that much. More to the point, as I was shooting today at the zoo with
the K10D tripod mounted just a few inches above eye level, I was reminded
once again of how totally cool the slanted top panel of the MZ-S was in
such situations. It allowed me to read the settings and keep track of
changes very easily from different angles of view. Plus it just looked
neat :o) That seemed like such a slick *and* practical design. I haven't a
clue why it never transferred to future camera designs.

Passed my road test, so now i'm a card carrying school bus driver.

My old boss, called and is short 1 guy for next week, to escort a wind tower

Sounds like i can then get a route that goes to a French immersion

After getting the K10D, I amused myself by going and looking at the
DPReview review of the original ist-D - it's amazing how similar in
design the two cameras are. With the exception of the weather
sealing, SR, larger screen and 10 megapixel sensor, the two cameras
are actually quite similar.

Funny! I am just the opposite regarding the MZ-S...I found its
control layout to be very intuitive and easy to use. I think it is a
lovely handling camera...especially with the grip. I think that is
one of the two reasons that I have never really taken to the
*istD...a non-intuitive interface with controls that are readily
accessible on the MZ-S requiring multiple button pushes and wheel
turnings on the *istD. I am slowly getting used to turning the wheel
to adjust the aperture instead of twisting a ring. The camera is also
just a little small to grip comfortably for me.

I have just ordered the grip for the *istD from KEH...I expect that
will improve things.

Yeahbut... MDR covers a LOT of area!
If you only work your way up and down the shoreline, you've got a few
miles of walking. Covers a lot of territory...

On the other hand, if you have a full day to use up, DO bring your
camera and a good zoom lens. At least 35mm-75mm, Down to 28 if you can,
up to 100mm + if possible, You'll find subjects for all ranges.
Bring your walking shoes.
Almost any place has cabs available, or you can easily find a phone and
call one.
Cab fare to and from your hotel will be minimal.
I live a couple miles north east of MDR, and a cab to the airport is
only $20.

Venice beach boardwalk on a weekend is a must! It's long, north to
south, but worth it.
North end nestles up against the south end of Santa Monica beach
activities, and the south end leads directly to Marina del Rey beaches.
Hardly any break between the two, but...if you're a dedicated walker,
you can do it in a long day, north to south, and there are plenty of
eating and drinking places along the whole stretch!

Good luck, and take a lot of photos!

Re: LAX trip: worth carrying the camera bag?

2008-03-29 Thread Stan Halpin
The beach front and pier at Marina del Rey have possibilities as does
the marina itself. When I was there most recently, in January, I had
my Optio 555 with me but left it in the hotel room and missed a
couple of evening shots of fishermen on the pier... I wouldn't take a
full bag, but a single body with 16-45 or 16-50 or 20-35 could be
worth it... The taxi ride to Marina would be worth it just to get to
an interesting restaurant (in contrast to the plastic hotel
restaurants in the Century Blvd. area). I don't recall the name, but
as you walk down the main street towards the pier, on the left toward
the end is a nice Italian place. On the other side of the marina
(south end, other side of the inlet) there are several good places on
the right side near the end of the road before the Coast Guard
station. Note - this is about a two-mile walk from the old area
around the pier because you have to circle inland around the whole
marina area.

If you don't something interesting will happen, if you do nothing will.
If you plan to get to the beach your itinerary won't allow it. If you
don't something will get canceled and you'll have plenty of time. So
take the bag what could it hurt.

Rick,
I have only been thru LAX 1 time when the sky was clear.
By the afternoon, the brown haze had returned.
So no good landscapes...
Marina Del Rey is near enough for a dinner, but still pretty urban.
I would think something like Venice beach would be more photogenic.
Maybe the Santa Monica pier?
Taking the camera to the hotel is nothing special.
Century Blvd. is hotel strip surrounded by 2 miles of industrial
airport warehouses.
East of the 405 'there be dragons'...

Re: Anomalous Pentax DSLR's

2008-03-29 Thread Bob Sullivan
I'm kind of confused on this.
What's the question here, what's the worst Pentax digital SLR model?
What have we seen - 3 different form factors, maybe 2?
There was the *istD, the *istDs, and the K10D.
I don't think the *istD and the *istDs were very different.
Both were nearly identical bodies...just a slightly bigger screen on the *istDs?
And weren't the remaining *istDL and such the same form factor,
just a porro mirror instead instead of the prism...so no change in body.
And the K10D and K20D are so close I fear mixing them up if I'm not careful.
They are identical except for the slightly bigger screen fitted onto the K20D.
Handed one or the other in the dark, you would have trouble telling
which you held.

So what's the question here?
Do you like form factor A, the smaller one or form factor B, the bigger one???
I still like the *istDs size and weight (& no battery pack).
It is more in line with the traditionally smaller Pentax size 35mm camera.
If I had a say in the design, I would like a Ds size camera with the 2
wheels, one front & one back.
I've grown used to these since the PZ-1.

As it stands, I'm adjusting to the bigger size of the K20D.

Regards, Bob S.

years and the K20 for 3 weeks so far :)

I never actually owned an *istD, and maybe held one a dozen times. My
guess is that I took less than 100 shots with an *istD. For what that's
worth.

I think I'm odd-man-out here. While the K10D was plenty comfy, I found
the *istD much more pleasant to hold. Most people who have used both
give me a crooked stare when I admit this.

Granted, the stare could be for other reasons.

That's debatable.

Very true.

Was always a serious PITA when shooting action & more often in my
case, panorama sequences.

I still do this so it isn't that big a difference to me.

Cheers,

Dave

The *istD. Overly small grip makes the handling inferior to the later
bodies. Slow write speeds and the necessity to drop out of shooting
mode to change ISO, WB or image quality settings comprimise it as a
camera as well.

Mat,
I especially like the last one, the sunset.
The clouded sun and the wave heading for the beach are just right.

Re: Henrys has K20d STOCK

2008-03-29 Thread David J Brooks
It could be Tim.

Some one here has sent in a camera and offending lenses, to get
calibrated. Maybe thats what i need to do, send in the DA 50 and FA
100 and have the 16-45 checked to.

The Tamron 28-70 was faulty, i;'m pretty sure. At F3.5-2.8 it was not
a matter of a bit of BF or FF, it was like the lens had been speard
with vasiline or something. Subject looked like it was shot in heavy
fog.

Oh well. I know a lot of complains are made to all three major
players, so hopefully some one is on it.
