PESO -- Mallard Escape
On this shot I was doing everything wrong. I had the camera and lens set up for a close focus shot of an early wild flower bloom, (maximum DOF with the slowest shutter speed I though I could reasonably hand hold). I was just beginning to compose the shot when there was a horrendous squawking and excited quacking from down stream. I immediately brought the camera around to see a male Mallard being chased by another, in a territorial dispute. I got off three quick shots while panning on the lead duck as he finally made his escape by becoming airborne. All at 1/40 sec, and ~200mm. None in particularly good focus. Well on further reflection I decided that this one seems to work well as kind of an abstract. I cropped it a bit to improve the composition. K20D Review in Amateur Photographer
I was considering buying a K20D because the low noise 14.6 MP sensor is particularly attractive. However, the review in this week's Amateur Photographer was a little disappointing, particularly when referring to purple fringing. The review pointed out that a recent optical test of the 16-50mm f/2.8 DA lens showed no problem of chromatic aberration, so the reviewer concluded that the colour fringing must have come from the sensor. Any comments? Why should I buy a DSLR with a colour fringing problem? ___ Yahoo! yet another Lightroom question
Also I'm trying out now Lightroom as possible replacement of Elements on my new PC. In Elements I used to store my converted (exported) JPG's along with the DNG files in the same folder. I am used to identify folders based on subject and subfolders by date taken. Elements does import from card folders by date and also saves the converted JPG by default in the same folder unless you select to save for web w/o EXIF. In LR I see so far no easy way to do thisin the same folder and upon saving the JPG it is hard to find back the folder in which the DNG file is located. Another point is that in Elements the JPG file size can be set before saving, or the file size is indicated for the selected percentage of original, which I haven't figure out how to do in LR. Although LR has more handles in adjusting RAW's, I find Elements conversion menu easier to access than LR develop menu, as there is no need for scrolling on my 1024 by 768 screen. But no doubt I'm still on the bottom of the learning curve here. Re: PESO: Perfect Form
Thanks to all who commented. But this is a bad example of what I was trying to demonstrate. Looking at it in the morning with glasses on I have to say you're all correct. The grass is in focus. That's a matter of photographer failure or continuous autofocus failure rather than the lens being out of whack. It's not out by three feet! :-)). Probably didn't catch another autofocus update before pulling the trigger. I processed this late at night and was smitten by the image. But I can't really detect soft without glasses -- or a diopter adjustment. So there you have it. But I do like Grace's form, and I am planning an NFL career for her. Re: DA* 16-58/2.8 and the flat focus problem
If you ask for a replacement, they pay shipping for the new lens. However, I generally ask for a refund and order a new one immediately. That means I have a new lens about a week sooner, but I pay about twelve dollars more. My local store stocks only DA lenses, no DA*. They assume all their serious photographers are Canon or Nikon shooters. And for the most part, they're right. But up until only a few years ago, they weren't even stocking Pentax equipment. Now they're selling some, so they may come around. But I've watched the sales people in action, and they generally try to talk newbies out of a Pentax choice. They carry it only because some people are now demanding it, based on magazine and internet reviews. And perhaps personal recommendations as well. But I can tell that it irks the salespeople to have to hand over a Pentax camera. So they can't meet my needs. And I wouldn't want to have to try to deal with them on a return of Pentax equipment. Re: DA* 16-58/2.8 and the flat focus problem
The only type the uneven focus field problem might show up is if your shooting something where the subject is approximately equidistant from one end of the frame to the next. That's why this could go unnoticed for quite a while. I have a number of good shots that I produced with this lens before I noticed the problem. (Not including the one that I posted:-). The shooting I've done with it, however, has all looked pretty good. I just went through 300 some exposures made with it at a wide variety of focal length, distance and scene types: I see no signs of any focusing or sharpness issues, other than those caused by my own sloppiness in using it. I don't often post architectural photos. Perhaps that's because I tend to concentrate on other stuff, or perhaps it's because I mostly suck at it, but today I'm breaking with tradition. This is my favourite group of buildings in Toronto, The Toronto-Dominion Centre, designed by noted modernist Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (his name was just Ludwig Mies; he added the van der Rohe to make it sound better). His buildings dot (among other places) New York (the Seagram Building)) and Chicago (IBM Tower and many others): he virtually defined the International Style of architecture. When you make an edit/ develop a RAW file, all you are really doing is entering the EDITS into a database. The RAW file sits there, untouched. When you decide to share this JPEG file with someone out there - either by copying the JPEG out, or creating a slide show, or by setting something up on the Web - that's when the file is exported and all of the changes you want to have happen to the file are applied. You don't really need to save the JPEG anywhere unless you're going to share it with someone. Otherwise, the Lightroom database has a list of the changes required to convert the original file to one that looks like what you want it to look like. Also - if you want to know where a file is located, there is a panel on the right-hand side with all of the metadata - one of them is the folder name where the original file is located - if you click on that, it shows you where that folder is in the Folders tree on the left- hand side. Right-clicking (or Ctrl-clicking on the Mac) that folder lets you choose, among other options, to show in Finder (and, I'll wager, Show in Explorer on Windows) where the file lives in your directories/folders. Pentax Photo Browser/Photo Lab on Win2K
So all Pentax's literature tells us that Photo Browser will run on Win2K and Photo Lab isn't available I'm not sure what they mean exactly since Photo Lab 3.5 seems to be running fine on my Win2k Server system with SP4 installed. I'm almost afraid to tempt fate by installing the Remote Assistant (ver. 3.01). The documentation says the it isn't available either and I'm a little afraid that I'll trash whatever it is in my current configuration that allows software that isn't available to run. Luckily, I don't need it just yet as I haven't yet ordered a K20D. I really have to clone the boot drive on this machine again. The last clone is well, very old, but I've misplaced the software somewhere. I'd like to thank everyone who tried to help when I posted the original question, even Adam. -- Vote for Cthulhu. In the real world (was DA* 16-58/2.8 and the flat focus problem)
I have examples of my DA* lens giving me sub-par real-world results. Here's the real world image: http://www.westerickson.net/misc/ValleyOak.jpg Here are 100% crops of the left, center, and right portions of the image. Note that some of the grassland on the both the left and right sides is in the plane of focus. http://www.westerickson.net/misc/LeftCenterRight.jpg The blurring on the right side is noticeable in an 8x10 print that I made with my Epson R800 printer. The problems are obvious in this test image: http://www.westerickson.net/misc/ProblemDAStar1650.jpg Note that I used exactly the same setup (camera in same position) with my FA 50mm F1.7 as a control, so I know that the wall and camera are aligned. My local authorized Pentax service center evaluated the lens, noted the defect, and sent it back to Colorado per their instructions --Mark Paul wrote: I decided to continue my upgrade of the medium zooms with the addition of the DA* 16-50/2.8. It's an ideal lens for event photography, which I've been doing more often. My lens arrived Monday. I tried to adjust the focal point yesterday using the Nikon chart. I had a lot of problems getting a compromise reading at the various focal lengths. More disturbing was the fact that the left side of the chart and the right side of the chart weren't focusing on the same plane. I conferred off list with Joe Tainter, who is well informed on these problems and decided to test further. Today I tested the lens by shooting a flat wooden deck off the tripod. The level of the deck and the camera were checked and matched with a bubble gauge. The lens is definitely our of whack by a considerable amount. It's easily noticeable in this sort of test at 2.8 and all focal lengths and still somewhat noticeable at 50mm, f5.6. It's on its way back to BH and a replacement is on its way to me. In normal shooting early yesterday the problem wasn't noticeable. (I have a nice pic of Grace playing hopscotch:-). I've never used it but this says you can use it to edit EXIF information. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Graphic/Digital-Photo-Tools/EXIFeditor.shtml I'm not sure but the lens name may be stored as a code of some type which would be used in conjunction with a Lookup table to display human readable information,. I know that none of the RAW converters I use, except for the Pentax Photo Browser/Photo Lab combination seem to be able to tell me the lens name. If there's no code you won't be able to update that field to display anything meaningful. re: yet another Lightroom question
Charles answered Henk's original question on point. Summarizing, Lightroom does not create a JPEG, TIFF or PSD rendering of a RAW file with your edits until you tell it to explicitly with the Export function or implicitly with the edit in photoshop... or edit in another editor commands. (When you use these two commands, it creates a rendering in TIFF or PSD format alongside the original RAW file on disk, and this rendering is automatically entered into the catalog as well). In normal operation when you're using Lightroom to manipulate cropping, tonality, etc, it records your editing instructions in its catalog (and optionally in metadata either as an XMP sidecar file or into a DNG file directly) and renders the file as you have edited it on the fly for viewing and display. You can immediately get to any file that you see in the Library module using the Show In Finder [Windows Explorer] commands ... but in essence, you really shouldn't have to do that very often at all. It will create a JPEG/DNG/TIFF/PSD rendered file on demand via the Export function and place it anywhere you want to store it. My workflow places files that I import into a directory tree rooted as work-in-progress, files that I export are organized into a directory tree rooted as completed-images. Subdirectories tagged with project number, date and event, etc, are in both of these trees. The flow of work goes from card to work in progress to completed images after I'm done with them, if I need to export them. My working catalog contains only work in progress directory tree, I maintain a second catalog which imports only the completed images directory tree. I've found this to be an efficient organizational model for how to coordinate and store files and keep what I'm working on separate from what I've completed in the file system. From: Lucas Rijnders [EMAIL PROTECTED] And, while more or less on the subject, is there a way to edit 'maker notes', especially lens name in the exif? If a shot is by an 'A series lens' with SR set to 50, I know which one it is. I'd like to store that info in the exif... ... There appear to be some tools around to edit EXIF, but they didn't work on the 'maker notes'. From: Matthew Hunt [EMAIL PROTECTED] What I've seen in tools like PhotoME is that the lens type maker note is just a number, and the software then has to look up that number in its own list of lenses. My guess is that there's no way to modify the EXIF to indicate an old A lens, because those lenses were never assigned an ID number. Yes. If you want to look at EXIF metadata, the tool you want to analyze and manipulate EXIF information is EXIFtool by Phil Harvey: http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ This is a command line tool with extensive ability to read and edit EXIF data in a huge range of file types, including RAW file types. Be aware that manipulating the lens codes and other private maker data can be a little tricky and often doesn't give you want you want. I normally use the tool to read the data for analysis, not to edit it. As Matthew said, you can't put in lens data for lenses that never had it such that Lightroom will recognize it. Lightroom recognizes all Pentax lenses properly now, far as I can tell, given the data that is available. Learning and reference resources for Lightroom continue to grow, any list posted is quickly outdated with new ones. I strongly recommend people work with the video tutorials available at Adobe and Luminous- Landscape.com, and a few others. Adobe's tutorial videos are at http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/ Very well done stuff. Re: Pulitzer
I'm not sure what you mean by more and more present, but really the reason this is such a tragedy is that is so unusual for a relatively young healthy woman to die prematurely. From the 1840's, when good record keeping became a general to about 1910 statistics show that young women were very vulnerable to typhus, cholera, child birth, small pox it was truly horrible, popular songs reflected just that, Listen to the Mocking Bird, which was adopted by the 3 Stooges, actually find the words and read them. . There was a culture of death or rather dealing with death throughout the Victorian Age. If you go to any relatively old cemetery you should count the headstones of you woman who died in their late teens to early thirties. The numbers are sometimes astounding. Back after a long time; plus some Good Stuff for sale like FA* 600/4
I'm glad to see olde friends on PDML. I have been unable to follow the list for some time now, mid 2004 actually, and I re-subscribed just today. Apparently Pentax has a couple of new cameras with nice features since I last posted... Anyway, part of the reason I re-upped PDML is I have a few too many cameras and many too many lenses and accessories. I see a Big House Cleaning soon, lenses and accessories from FA* 600/4 on down. I'm sure I'll keep a good set of gear, probably get a Pentax camera upgrade to my IstD, but I'm really going to downsize this time. I'll keep one Pentax DSLR, a couple of zooms and maybe 2-3 more lenses, one good flash, tripod and simple head, minor accessories. On the items I'm going to sell, prices are not firm yet since I don't know the going rate nowadays, but will be fair and probably under Ebay. Will ship overseas if the buyer makes the arrangements on their end and all I have to do is drop off the box and sign the customs form. Offers welcome, reasonable or not, public or private. Will reply as quickly as I can. Partial list: PENTAX FA* 600/4 WITH ORIGINAL FACTORY FULL KIT INCLUDES FITTED METAL HARD CASE, HOOD, INTERNAL FILTERS WALLET, NECK/SHOULDER STRAP) MISC. Thanks Charles and Godfrey. It is clear that it will need a different file structure as I'm used to with Elements by just keeping both DNG and JPG in the same folder. Yes but the death rates due to so many things that would have killed people before they had a chance to develop cancer have fallen so much. Some cancers can even be prevented with vaccines today that have killed thousands of women in the past. It's getting better, and has been for a long time. Mark Roberts wrote: P. J.
