It seems to be a server side error. Here is the error message:
-

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0113'

The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can
change this limit by specifying a new value for the property
Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value in the IIS administration
tools.

I don't recall ever getting this error from any of your posts before but
I've seen similar errors before.

FS Friday: Various lenses & body

2008-07-10 Thread Mike Hamilton
At the moment, I"m having a hard time locating my card reader. My
desk is a bit of a sty. I have taken photos of these items, and will
provide images once I have them onto the web.

FA 20-35 f/4 -- excellent condition. I purchased this new from B&H in
2006. Includes original caps, hood, lens bag. $415

DA 50-200 ED f/4-5.6 -- excellent condition. Bought last summer.
It's not a lens that I use often. Includes original caps, hood. $160

Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28mm f/3.5 -- legendary optics, supposed
best of the 28s. This is the 49mm filter design. Tiny, thin
scratches on front element, probably about 3mm long. Body & hood are
in very good condition. $60

Zenitar 16mm f/2.8 -- very good condition. Includes original front &
rear caps, clear rear filter (and I'm sure that I have the others
around also - just have to find them!), and original lens bag. $130

MZ-5 body -- used this body for a few rolls of film. Very nice to
use. Flash spring is broken, so it does not pop-up. Still works, but
requires a finger to hold it in position. Wasn't an issue for me, the
tiny on-board flashes are rarely used. $50

Prices do not include shipping, from Edmonton, Canada.

Contact me off-list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks!
Mike

Congratulations on getting a web site up - it can be frustrating to get
the images and layout looking the way you want but it's worth the
effort.

Others have commented on the fact that some images are far too large for
quick display on a web site. It seems that you have resized many of the
images to their correct display size but others are being resized by the
browser from very large images, and this slows down the time it takes
for the pages to load. People are just not going to be that patient! For
example on the "Ted's Images" page your "needles and trees" image is
being resized by the browser from the full 10MB (2592 x 3872 pixels)
image.

I notice also that you have a "right click disabled" script running. I
really think this is a waste of time for two reasons: 1) it can be
counter-productive for potential customers as it basically tells your
visitors that you think they are thieves (they may well be, but those
that aren't might feel aggrieved and less inclined to buy) and, 2) it
doesn't do anything useful - if someone wants to steal an image, they
can just drag it to their desktop (this is how I found out the size of
"needles and trees" - I've now deleted it from my desktop, by the way
:-)>

My only other comment on the layout is that the pages involve quite a
lot of scrolling. I much prefer photo sites where the images are
presented as a gallery of thumbnails that link to larger images for
better viewing.

Good luck with the site.

Cheers

Brian

You can post the version I sent you for comparison. I didn't touch the
saturation on mine, but it ended up with the *appearance* of increased
saturation.

Also, I burned in a couple of spots and applied some lens blur to the
foliage in the background left. (Yeah, I know in my original post I said
that all it needed was a little curves adjustment, but after I wrote
that I decided some other help was needed. Still nothing excessive.)

Better, but oversaturated. I would go back to the original, push the curve up
in the middle to increase midrange brightness, then take a second turn at
curves and turn it into a gentle sigmoid.

PESO: Window Boxes 2 Revised

2008-07-10 Thread Rick Womer
The original was, indeed, drab. Mark Roberts sent me a version he touched up.
I've never done much with post-processing, but his version was =so= much better
that it inspired me to take a careful look at Mark's and its histogram, then
spend a while in Lightroom figuring out what he did (curves! gack!).

After boosting saturation and vibrance, turning the tone curve from a straight
line into a sigmoid, and then cropping tighter to get rid of some crap in the
gutter, this is what resulted:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=7535156

The original:

A striking improvement, I would say.

"Window Boxes 2" doesn't grab me nearly as much. For one thing, I don't
care for the jumble of OOF trees and the neighbor's roof on the left
edge. And I think I'd like to see more of the window boxes themselves.
Actually, I think the whole thing would work better for me if you'd
shot it from a little left of where you did, so we get more of a "face
on" view of the wall rather than the very oblique view in #2. But
that's a different photograph. :-)

Re: July PUG is up

2008-07-10 Thread Brian Walters
Can I add my note of appreciation, Scott? Thanks for your efforts.

An excellent gallery and I agree with others about Jos' "Voetballer
Niels". Great shot and a wonderful expression on the boy's face.

I also particularly liked Mark's "Future Champion", Paul's "Whiplash"
(again, great facial expression), Doug's "Ah Crap" (the tufts of grass
in the air really make the shot) and Christine's "Ruby Jumps" is just an
enjoyable, fun shot.

I'm still cleaning up the coffee on my keyboard as a result of Walt's
"Scottish Lassie" (those Port-a-loos in the background look to be in
serious danger)

And, I like George's "Orestiada lake the afternoon" both in its own
right and as an unexpected interpretation of the theme.

Cheers

Brian

If you're a wedding photographer who charges $5000-$10,000 (or more) per
gig and whose clients are millionaires, you probably *need* a $40,000
camera. Not for the image quality, necessarily, but as part of *your*
image, with which you have to market yourself to that kind of customer.

Not a big deal for those guys - the camera will pay for itself fairly
quickly and its depreciation written of as a business expense.

I have been to several Hasselblad function where we get to test drive new
blads. My experience here in Sydney is that the most common users are
wedding photographers.

Their is a good showing of design/print houses and a few of the wealthy
hobbists, but I find mostly it is the crowd of wedding photogs who want,
or demand, the highest possible resolution.

Im not sure how or when, 35mm became a "pro" level camera for weddings,
but now that there is more glass available for the blads, many of wedding
photogs seem to moving back into MF.

Just my observations

spelling mistakes (for example, you have spelt 'monastery' at least 3
different ways, Tibetian should be Tibetan, and Budda should be

Well, it's brave of you to put yourself out there like this! I don't
recognize you as a regular contributor to PDML (i'm not either - more
occasional!). Looks like you've put a lot of work into your website.
With that said, here are my views:

Your images are not very interesting to me. They seem over-processed
(saturation and sharpening), but it appears as though this is the look
you are going for.

The thumbnails that you have seem to be full size jpegs that have been
coded in html as a smaller size. That means that it takes a long time
to load a small photograph. I would advise re-sizing those images
before uploading.

Good luck with your website.

Mike

It seems on a per photo basis, (even a good size commercial operation),
would never amortize one of these over their useful lifetime. For most
studios on a cost per shot basis it's would be less expensive using
film. (Ok, so that's not even back of the envelope calculations but
that's what my gut tells me).

High-end commercial shooters can justify 40K for a camera. Some of the best
gross that much in a couple days of shooting. And Hassy doesn't expect high
volume, so that market alone probably absorbs much of their production. Then
there are the ridiculously rich hobbyists who have to have the latest and
greatest and for whom money is no object.

Re: PESO: Window Boxes 2

2008-07-10 Thread Bob Sullivan
Rick,
#2 being drab is a real disadvantage.
The building is gray. The window frames look uneven (dirty or wet grout).
There is other stuff in the frame (lower left).
The bright flowers don't 'sing' against a white background as in #1.
Interesting the contrast between the two photos...
Regards, Bob S.

PESO: Cough! Cough!

2008-07-10 Thread Jack Davis
You may have read/heard about California's worse than usual forest fire problem
this year. Last I read, there are some 1,700 forest/grass fires burning over
the state. Some man caused and many by lightning. We live in the northern
central valley. The combination of smoke trapped under a cap of high ozone
caused by extreme heat (113F forecast for today) has produced some very chunky,
absolutely calm air. Unpleasant for all breathing creatures and dangerous for
many.
Took a couple shots in the back yard at about 7:30 this AM. Makes my eyes burn
just looking at it. I know, that's true of most of my pictures..OK.

What a joke! Everyone knows you can't shoot sports & action with Pentax!
The autofocus isn't good enough! The frame rate is too slow!

Best shot of the PUG? IMHO, it's Jos van der Hijden's "Voetballer
Niels". Come to think of it, that's one of the best sports shots I've
seen ever.
And it was taken with an MX.

I kinda like it. Dark, moody, with some interesting colors in there.

I keep wanting to shove the big white shell (with the snail in it) to
the right so that it is centered, though. Maybe that's just me being
boring and rigid, but that's the only thing I'd change if it were my

Well, I think you hit on one aspect of "2" and that's "drab". Lacks some
definition, the boxes/colors run together. Makes me want to move to my left and
away from the wall to judge what the shot does for me.
Basically, the angle and lighting frustrate me.

It seems on a per photo basis, (even a good size commercial operation),
would never amortize one of these over their useful lifetime. For most
studios on a cost per shot basis it's would be less expensive using
film. (Ok, so that's not even back of the envelope calculations but
that's what my gut tells me).

PESO -- Fireworks NY 2007 II

2008-07-10 Thread P. J. Alling
Another fireworks shot from July 4th.

Continuing with my rant. The image in Photoshop was exactly the same
colors as seen in the raw converter, which is pretty damned close to the
jpeg exported for the web. Now I know it would be easier if I used
lightroom but I'm a stubborn b*d. These things are supposed to work
damn it.

http://home.earthlink.net/~morephotos/fireworks/PESO%20--%20fwny2008_02.html

Equipment: Pentax *ist-Ds/smc Pentax 85mm f2.0

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Aside from my equine work, my personal work is driving around the
country side, looking for old farm buildings, barns, equipment etc.
With gas getting expensive, for us North Americans, i have put that on
the shelf for a while, as i have covered most of the area close to
home. Now i find i am driving 100 Km or more to look for new
buildings. I;'ll get out there one or two days this summer, but i will
be more careful were i go.:-)

I know gas has been expensive in Europe for a long time, but this is
new to us, so go easy.:-)

We're not dour. We just suffer from mental anguish a lot. And other head
trauma.

Re: Suggestion for Pentax Photo Gallery

2008-07-10 Thread AlunFoto
I submitted about half of my currently accepted pics before the peer
voting started in September last year. The rest were submitted between
September and December. Since I've been out of the loop for 6 months I
don't know if things have changed now, but last year I saw no
significant difference in acceptance rate before and after peer voting
was introduced. But i DO think there was a change in what type of pics
are accepted. I think I bitched a lot about that... :-)
