Hi Charles, Bob, John Francis, & gldnbearz: Yes, the 28mm tip is a point
well taken. When I looked at Lightroom (as I mentioned before) I noticed a
lot of my shots were in & around the 28mm area when shooting with the DA
16-45mm. I'd love to start looking at used equipment, but truth be told,
I'm not confident in my skills in assessing used equipment at all. I
suppose with more experience I'll get better at this. Big Thanks, Christine

16-50 infinity problem figured out

2008-09-01 Thread Charles Robinson
So, ever since I had my 16-50 serviced to fix the broken barrel...
it's not been able to get a focus confirmation at infinity.

I've been working around it with the AF-C option, which lets the
camera zap it to (nearly) infinity and then it just trips the shutter
because I told it to.

Well, in preparation for shooting a big concert event on Tuesday
night, I decided to put my old Katz-Eye into the K10D. I've heard
from more than one source that the DS-designed Katz-Eye underexposes
on the K10D but I'll be shooting manual exposure all tomorrow night so
exposure issues don't bug me as much as getting the proper focus.

Interesting bit I've noticed now that I have a microprism/split prism
focus confirmation guide on the screen is that the darned thing CANNOT
focus on infinity. I can get very very close, but any vertical
fenceposts or other obvious focus-confirmation guidelines show me that
I can get the lens to ALMOST get to the infinity mark, but not quite
there.

(sigh)

So, the obvious reason for not getting a focus confirmation lock on
infinity is that the lens cannot get that far.As the warranty
repair of the barrel states that the repairs/adjustments are warranted
for a year, it's time to send the sucker back. Even when mounted on
my ME-Super I can see that the lens does not quite get to the infinity
spot. Heck, if this wasn't still under warranty I'd figure out how
to adjust it myself - but shoot, how can someone MISS something this
obvious when servicing a lens???

My oft-repeated mantra: "I just want people to do their jobs". I'm a
little bit more than annoyed that Pentax service let the lens come
back to me with such an obvious mis-adjustment. Such is life, I
suppose.

Mistaken, I'm afraid: It's only available in screw-drive AF for Pentax.
Of course, that means it'll work with all AF Pentax cameras.

Never used it myself, but I've never heard a bad word about it other
than the small max aperture. Check photographyreview.com and other

All Good Things

2008-09-01 Thread Cotty
Hello list.

Well, would you believe it, it's almost ten years to the day when I
joined this list. I had an LX and wanted to re-cell a NiCad pack for the
motor drive. Someone pointed me to Rob Studdert's page and the rest, as
they say, is history.

Since that time there's been plenty of water under the bridge. I sold
the Pentax film gear, bought into Canon with a D60, adapted some K mount
lenses to fit and been called a few names...

Everything changes, and all good things must come to an endwith
other good things starting up.

>From next week I'm putting all my Canon gear up for sale. I've decided
to buy into Sony.

Actually Sony HD ;) Not stills gear - video. I'm taking precious few
stills these days and to be honest, not enjoying it as much as I used
to. I feel a change of priorities coming on...

And so I will be concentrating more on video production, acquiring some
new gear and need to pay for it.

I'll have a list of kit up next week and of course will offer to the
PDML first, but fear not - the K15/3.5 and the A*85/1.4 in EF mount will
not be amongst them. I'm going to hang onto those and in a year or two
hope to pick up a used 1Ds mark II full-frame camera. Everything else
with Canon on it will be up for sale.

I'll keep my rangefinder and three lenses for snaps. I just won't be
photographing with a DSLR for a while. I'll keep the website going. If
it ain't broke, right...

With a bit of luck and a fair wind I can claw back about two and a half
grand (GBP) and then I'll be half-way there to funding an HD video
camera. Must be something else not nailed down around here I can sell

Meanwhile, I'll be reducing my input into the territory somewhere below
PESO-posting but above lurking. I thought about giving it a rest here,
but to be honest, the gene pool here is well above average and the
photography one sees displayed is first rate, so I wouldn't like to lose
that. Plus I'm still up for any gatherings - UK or elsewhere. Plan on
going to GFM as well (my son insists he come along next year). The
subscription stands. Besides, I need to be there when my hat really does
end up on a plate, not that that will be anytime soon!

And so in a time-honoured tradition, from the heart of my bottom, it
only remains for me to say:

There's a penguin on the telly.

(Yes officer, I'll go quietly)

"Anyone have experience with this lens?"

Comments from users all seem favorable. (This is mainly at dpreview, so
the standards are not exacting.) As an alternative to a 600 mm. prime
(many thousands of $$) it seems to give satisfactory value for the
money. On Pentax it would AF with the shaft drive.

That's an indication that you're using the wrong lens, and
need to buy something else to extend your capabilities :-)

While I will admit that many of my shots with the 16-50 seem
to be taken at 50mm, there are a good number of them taken at
30 or 31mm (maybe I need the 31mm limited?), and quite a few
at 34 or 35mm. Other focal lengths get used less often, but
I do seem to be covering most of the range.

Similarly, with my 80-200, there are a lot at 200, but also
a fair number at intermediate focal lengths.

Hi Christine,

Chiming in here to ditto what Bob said about using a 28mm. Oftentimes
for me, the 50mm is too close for what I want. I switch out to the FA
28/2.8 - for me, this is a light weight, compact set-up, especially on
the istDS. If I really have to bring one small lens, this is it.

Try it out, you might really like it too.

Well, most of them anyway.

This weekend I walked with a friend from the source of the Thames to
Lechlade, about 25 miles (40km). We spread the walk over 2 days, and
he is now continuing by kayak to Greenwich, where he expects to arrive
on Sunday next with the ebbing tide.

Here are some of the pictures from the weekend:
http://www.web-options.com/TP2008/

The source itself is the very dry stone monument, picture 4. Picture 7
shows Lyd Well, which is where the water first flows permanently, a
few hundred yards from the source. It is, however, a well not a
spring. I think the Romans dug it. The cows seem to too.

Shoot with it for a while to see how you like it.

Well, I kept the apt for head & feet and afterwards started to drive to
Calumet Photo. I got about a 1/3 of the way there, then turned around and
headed home. I went straight to the computer and opened Lightroom to see
just how many shots I have shot at 35 mm on the DA 16 - 45mm f4. Well, it
was a lot less than I expected---but today I'm going out & I'm going to set

case that I'm walking around, see something, bring the camera to the left of

Also, I really want a 2nd body: if my K10D tanked, I'd like a back-up & I'd

The construction will go on for 18 months. I've been introduced to the
