Pentax sighting: Milk
I saw the film Milk today, about the slain '70s gay rights activist and first openly gay elected official in the US, Harvey Milk. It was a really good film; I can't recommend it enough. Milk opened a store called Castro Camera when he moved to San Francisco, so naturally there are a lot of cameras appearing in the film. He used a little Nikon rangefinder early on, and Nikon SLRs showed up in the hands of press photographers quite a bit. There was one supporting character, however, who used a Pentax Spotmatic. I couldn't get a clear look at the exact model, though. I think there may have been another Pentax in the movie somewhere, but I'll probably have to wait for the DVD release to look again. Re: Custom Machinist doing gods work...
I own the SMC 500 4.5 and use it on my K10D, so I checked out my lens to see why someone would need a K adaptor for it. The site calls it f4.6, but if you look close at the photo it says f4.5. The part of the lens that mounts to the camera is removable by unscrewing a collar just behind the focus meter. It looks to me like the mount piece of the lens in question was either lost, damaged or was for a non-K camera (M42 or maybe medium format, if those options were available), and the owner of the lens wasn't able to find a proper replacement. The original part allowed for 52mm filters to be mounted internally, so that couldn't have been his only reason for making the custom part. The original also allowed for the whole lens to be turned relative to the camera (see the knob near the back here: http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/primes/extreme-tele/K500f4.5.html), so his custom part is missing that feature. I should note, that removable mount feature has almost cost me the lens a couple times. Damn thing comes loose easily, and you'll be out shooting when suddenly you're holding the oddly light camera with one hand and have to scramble to catch the lens! John -- http://www.neovenator.com http://www.cafepress.com/neovenatorphoto - Original Message - From: "Mark Roberts" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Pentax-Discuss Mail List" Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 1:39 PM Subject: Re: Custom Machinist doing gods work... What am I missing here? My Pentax K500/4.5 mounts just fine on both my K1000 film body and my K20D digital body, with no problem in focusing to infinity. Of course, focusing is manual unless I use my F1.7x AF Teleconverter behind the lens... The front mount on that adapter looks very "different" and the connection between the adapter looks odd. I'd guess that this lens was modified for some other camera mount and, after it changed hands a few times, someone had a custom adapter made to make it fit a K-mount camera again. RE: OT: Browser & font questions
From: "Bob W" I've tidied up the front page of my website a little bit because I intend to point there in the metadata in my photographs, for the sake of copyright traceability and permission. It also makes it easy for me to add / remove links from the page. There's nothing new on there. I have tested it with a number of browsers on my PC, running XP SP3. My normal browser at the moment is IE v8 beta, where it works fine. I've also tested it on the following browsers on my PC, with comments about the results: Opera - very good but the numbers on Lightroom index pages are the wrong colour Firefox - OK Safari - text is blotchy and lacks definition Chrome - very good, fast Amaya - rubbish. Layout is all over the place and on IE6 at work (doesn't handle the CSS or logo properly). I must say, I was very surprised that Amaya handled it so poorly. Can other people have a quick look at the front page: http://www.web-options.com, and also at the page called Recent Photographs, and let me know if you get any strangeness or oddities, please? Looks fine to me. I'm using Firefox v.3.0.4 on Windoze Vista Ultimate (version 6.0). Couple of suggestions thought. I wouldn't leave your Admin login hanging right out there on the front page. And it's helpful if there's a link back to the front page from any of the pages it calls. Just makes browsing easier. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

FS Friday: 1.7X Adapter
I selling my used but good condition (7 of 10) Pentax A F1.7x adapter. This highly sought after lens accessory doesn't see much use from me any longer since I have obtained my super telephoto lens. I works wondors on the manual focus lenses giving them AF capability in additon to the 1.7x magnification. Matched with the sharp primes and zooms like the FA*300/4.5 or the FA* 80-200/2.8, it provides excellent image quality unexpected from that of a normal teleconverter. The front element has a small mark in the SMC coating that does not affect image quality. I'm also pondering selling several other FA* lenses including the FA*24/2, FA*300/4.5, FA 77/1.8 Ltd. & FA 43/1.9 -please drop me a note if interested in any of these. Price is $269 plus shipped and Paypal'd to verified CONUS addresses. Will ship to other locations at buyers expense. Please send me email if interested. I went back and checked, it was done with the same 300/4.5 lens(which I referred to as a 300/4 lens in the original post which of course is wrong), using K10D. I recall I had my tripod that day, this might have been with tripod or with folded tripod (i.e., virtual monopod). Shot at f4.5, and what you see is uncropped. I wonder if this one would look really cool in black and white? Just a thought. Ignore if you think it's a wacky idea. :-) I like the swirlly-wirlly lines. http://photos.stanhalpin.com/p47799857/he063731#he063731 I may play with it. This by the way is a cropped section of an image. I am thinking that an uncropped or less cropped version (with some bare bushes in the foreground framing the feather) might actually be the better choice for black and white. Also by the way... The "explosion" of geese in #14 is due to the raptor (golden eagle?) in #8 who decided to launch himself from his tree and do a straffing run over the geese (#15). From anyplace within a mile or so it is easy to tell when an eagle or two are in the neighborhood, as the geese honking noise about doubles in decibel level, then the sound of thousands of wings digging for air, then the cloud of birds rises out of the water. And there are enough eagles around, bald and golden (?) that the explosion happens at least once an hour. Very dramatic. Not visible in #14, but in several of the images I have of this phenomenon, you can see a number of ducks quietly paddling along in the same area, ignoring all the fuss and minding their own business. stan Cheers, Christine - Original Message - From: "Stan Halpin" <[EMAIL PROTECTED] photography.info> To: "Pentax-Discuss Mail List" Sent: Thursday, November 27, 2008 10:50 PM Subject: GESO: birds, and some more birds I have updated my Squaw Creek GESO folder - Squaw Creek is a National Wildlife Refuge set up primarily for migratory birds. I wish it were because they were cowards, however terrorists who smash their organizations on hard targets, and most leaders are very hard targets these days, aren't very terrible. Re: GESO: birds, and some more birds
I believe it is a Golden Eagle - below via Google: The golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is a member of the Booted or True Eagles family. Golden eagles can be found throughout much of the northern hemisphere. It lives in mountainous areas, prairie coulees, and other places where rugged terrain creates abundant updrafts. Size - Length of about 3 feet (.92m). Weighing up to 15 pounds (7kg), with a wing span of up to 7 feet (2m). Color - Adults are brown with tawny on the back of the head and neck; tail faintly banded. Juveniles have white patches at base of primaries, white tail with a distinct dark terminal band. It takes four years to acquire adult plumage. = stan On Nov 28, 2008, at 9:54 AM, Brendan MacRae wrote: Good stuff, Stan. The raptor in no. 7? What is it? Re: Custom Machinist doing gods work...
"Experts" would do well to look at literature published in the 1800's sometimes it has answers to questions they haven't bothered to ask, and a lot of this stuff will never be on line. Re: PESOs: Grace Does Thanksgiving
Thanks Bob. Yes, we had a very nice day. And we'll do a rerun of Thanksgiving dinner tonight. It's always better the second day:-). I'm experimenting with wireless flash, held in hand. Some nice effects are possible, and I want to employ it in candid wedding photography. Here's an example where it worked fairly well. The flash with lightsphere mounted is held off to the right of camera as far as I could reach, while I shot with my left hand. Unfortunately, I blew the framing, but the shot illustrates one nice off-camera lighting possibility: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=833 Paul On Nov 28, 2008, at 11:12 AM, Bob Sullivan wrote: Paul, Grace is charming as usual. Yep. We used to sit window side deep pic right. We'd drink & write postcards & sign them with our regional travel names, which on this trip were Reginald & Daphanie. Comment on Westerly Effect was [Re: PESO -- Closed for the season.]
Perhaps would have been slightly better with a lower viewpoint to get the bottom branch above the background foliage. Perhaps you're right. The shot was a relatively fast grab, the light was fading the temperature was "cold" there aren't words for how cold and miserable it was with a stiff wind blowing off the sea behind me, but the dog really wanted to get back into the car, and that never happens. Just one exposed frame, and off to shoot what I was actually there for which turned out to be ultimately disappointing. Re: GESO: Autumn Memories
I believe that I cited Tannins as a possible cause, and I mentioned Oak leaves as a source, (possibly incorrectly), due to their heavy concentration of tannins. I've actually tried to make iron gall ink using oak leaves as a source based on an old recipe, with indifferent results. "Experts" would do well to look at literature published in the 1800's sometimes it has answers to questions they haven't bothered to ask, and a lot of this stuff will never be on line. mike wilson wrote: From: PN Stenquist <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: 2008/11/27 Thu PM 01:45:43 GMT To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: Re: GESO: Autumn Memories I believe that the leaves are from sycamore tree. RE: PESO -- Closed for the season.
Are we seeing the same picture? I see the side of a building with an empty flag-holder at top-centre. The trees are very small and way off in the background. It's an interesting enough picture but I'd like to see either more or less context. IOW it lacks a story but it's not disconnected enough to qualify as abstract. Re: GESO: Autumn Memories
Thanks for the research. So we're not the only ones who are without an answer. BTW, I looked more carefully at the distribution of the leaf stains when I was out running yesterday. I now believe the leaves are from two maple trees. I believe they're hybrids developed for bright red fall color, perhaps the variety known here as Crimson King. It's a rather fetching shade of pale duck-egg blue with grey text a bit lighter than the background - about the same as the light side of the pole. Interestingly, on the "recent photographs" page, the background disappears and only the wording acts as a hyperlink. You have to get the pointer exactly on the line of the script for it to work. > > > Amusingly, > > given the above, the font is Papyrus, a TTF office font. Great light - interesting shape to the tree. Very photogenic. Perhaps would have been slightly better with a lower viewpoint to get the bottom branch above the background foliage. I do feel something however when I look at pictures taken with Leica cameras and Leica lenses. But then again I am so much in love with my A 50/1.2 that I can easily shrug off the temptation. *chuckle* Boris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: PDML Digest, Vol 31, Issue 261
No doubt Nikon F4 is a great camera but i agree LX is superior in performance exceot AF. IMHO a small camera MZ5N can beat in performance and Autofocus is superior to F4. I have above machines but no doubt look wise MZ5N is also a nice camera and light too for lengthy session and spedcially focusing with manual lenses i.e. "Trap Focus". > > Message: 7 > Date: Thu, 27 Nov 2008 20:56:16 -0800 (PST) > From: Brendan MacRae <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Subject: Re: The most beautiful camera > To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List > Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 > > I too think the Nikon F4 is a great looking camera.
