I like some of these shots, but you're right, they are flat and
overexposed. You may have had too much ambient light. Your exposure setting
should be a stop or two below ambient. For example, if the ambient light
gives you an f4, 1/30th exposure, shoot at 5.6. 1/30th. Then the flash will
be the main light and the ambient light will be fill. That's how I shoot
most of my indoor flash pics, and it appears to be what Christine was doing.
What's more, I shoot everything in RAW. Flash pics usually need some
rendering help. These could have been greatly improved in conversion.

Re: PESO - Tracks

Another vote for #1. Both are nice, but there's something about the
ripples in the sand intersecting the tracks that makes it more
interesting than #2. You might try lightening it overall, bumping up
the contrast a little and darkening the mid-tones to see if you like it
better - or maybe it retains more of a air of mystery as it is...YMMV.

Interesting. But I think the comparison of the cat shots is unfair.
You were much closer to the cat with the Pentax, which in my
experience makes it harder to get balanced flash.

Over all, however, I must agree that in this test and historically,
the Nikon flash (and the firmware that control it) wins the race.

Using the K10D and 77ltd and D200 and 18-70, both from the

 same settings.

 Af 360 on K10D and sb800 on D200.

Huge difference in adding light to shadows,,as seen in the

shots, and the shots of Boo in direct sun.
K10D way overexposed in the high lights, D200 opens up the
 shadows,
 with no blow outs.

The D200 is winning me over with the SB800.

The first is a bit static with the tracks pretty much straight up the
image - might try cropping out most of the LH side from the tracks to the
left.

The second is more dynamic and has more potential by cropping out the tracks
that run from the URH edge to the ULH edge, leaving the trail from the RH
corner curving up to the URH edge.

RE: sic transit optio w60

2009-01-05 Thread John Celio
but of course, I would not have wanted to have to do that sort of thing,
 anyway... what a PITA!

You only have to do it once.

You have to remember, PS cameras are not made to appeal to advanced
photographers like us. They're made for lowest-common-denominator
users, and as such have to be as simple and user friendly as possible.
Pentax and other companies have to assume that someone taking snapshots
is going to want the camera to perform exactly the same way every time
they use it, so they make the camera reset itself unless someone like
you tells it not to.

It may not make a lot of sense to you, but I'm sure there are a lot of
people who appreciate it.

Yes, I have but, like the others, I haven't used it enough to give a

right in the middle of the range of my DA 16-45, I rarely feel the need
to use it.

I haven't posted a PESO in a long time, which is totally out of character.
That's due in part to the virtual reality photos biz, which has kept me
really busy, shooting 1000 frames a week or so. It's also the result of a
project I undertook: the restoration of our wedding photos. They were 37
years old, cracked and creased. All of them had taken on a deep maroon shade.
I scanned each of about 70 on the Epson 3200 flatbed, restored the color and
retouched them. The book was falling apart, so I bought a new Legacy album as
well, which is the brand I sell to my brides. I would guess I have about 60
hours of work in that project, but it turned out well.

Which brings us to Grandma's birthday, where Grace presented her with the
book. (Grace is our birthday elf and is the central figure at every event.).
Here Grace waits anxiously while Grandma reads her card:

 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8461593size=lg

And here Grandma asks Grace, who is that? as she points to a wedding pic.
Grace was amazed to discover that we were once very young:

 http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8461593size=lg

I didn't use flash with these, primarily because I was being lazy:-). I shot
 them at ISO 1100, f4 @ 1/30th with the DA* 16-50/2.8 on the K20D. I used AWB
and didn't correct color temp. I was pleased with the way the camera balanced
the warm overhead tungsten and the cold window light. And that's all!

To my mind, the first one, with that look of nervous anticipation on
Grace's face, is priceless!

Wonderful project you've embarked upon. I'm sure your wife loved it!

I have saved a roll or two and gave them to Erin.

Why do I want these, she said.

the rolls to the show and see if they can figure out what they are.;-)
She can also take my old bag cell phone. That should confuse the F^k

At some point in the ensuing couple of years, the damned thing managed to

I plugged it back in some time ago, but never had the courage to open the

Anyway, today I bit the bullet and cleaned out as much of the contents as I

have lasted the rest of my life.
All of it was ruined by mold.

I hate it when that happens.

I was able to salvage a bunch of 120 and 35mm film which had been stored in
airtight film containers and didn't suffer the indignities of the cardboard
 boxes of sheet film.

More on that in another topic and post.

All of them had taken on a deep maroon
shade. I scanned each of about 70 on the Epson 3200 flatbed, restored the
color and retouched them. The book was falling apart, so I bought a new
Legacy album as well, which is the brand I sell to my brides. I would
guess I have about 60 hours of work in that project, but it turned out
 well.

Which brings us to Grandma's birthday, where Grace presented her with the
book. (Grace is our birthday elf and is the central figure at every
event.). Here Grace waits anxiously while Grandma reads her card:

  http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8461593size=lg

And here Grandma asks Grace, who is that? as she points to a wedding
pic. Grace was amazed to discover that we were once very young:

  http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8461593size=lg

I didn't use flash with these, primarily because I was being lazy:-). I
  shot them at ISO 1100, f4 @ 1/30th with the DA* 16-50/2.8 on the K20D. I
used AWB and didn't correct color temp. I was pleased with the way the
camera balanced the warm overhead tungsten and the cold window light. And
  that's all!

You only have to do it once.

not actually true... but never mind right now

You have to remember, PS cameras are not made to appeal to advanced
photographers like us. They're made for lowest-common-denominator
users, and as such have to be as simple and user friendly as possible.

Alas, they are not in any way simple and user friendly

A true point and shoot is a throw away camera that has a fixed focal
length and speed and DOF
The w60,for instance, comes with a book that has over 100 pages! They
want you to read the whole
book first! You and I don't really have to, but someone who just wants
to take some snaps is never going

to do that.

I have several friends who thought they would like digital for the
obvious reasons -- no film charges, ease
of getting prints, fits in your pocket, SIMPLE TO USE the Z10 and
The W60 both have tons of confusing
choices aimed at us, actually - they want to put it all in one.

John

No one over 30, does, I guarantee. these cameras are designed for
people who grew up with computers
and like cutsey pie little icons... they may know nothing about
lighting, timing, composing, but they do seem to

like to have lots of little buttons to push...

Pentax tried to make a camera especially to appeal to EVERYONE... and
that is what is screwed up.

The whole world of technology today is a disaster in terms of user
friendliness - ironic at a time when

there are more and more baby boomers or old folk

THe z10 and w60 DOESN'T do it all for you -- the choices are part of
there selling schtick -

The very worst element , which is one that has nothing to do with
photography at all is simply that
the on-off switch is VERY close to the shutter release... and the
buttons feel very much alike...
shooting quickly I hit the wrong one a number of times... that has
nothing to do with my skills as a photographer.

This tendancy toward overly complicated devices that are supposedly
better is one of the most irritating things
about consumer items these days no one I know, regardless of age,
consider the Tv Controls of today are
better , for instance ... you shouldn't have to have a manual to learn
how to use a TV.. what happened to
off on, volume , change channels? It'sthe same kind of thing...
hurry and make it fancier and if it hoovers

we will fix it later...

sigh - sorry for the digression -- but it is part of the same fabric of
our hyper-techno world... and it's a damn shame.

I use both the AF540 and Sigma 500DG-Super on a DS and DS2, generally
bouncing off the wall behind me or left/right and seem to get more
consistent results if the zoom on the flash is set to manual rather than
letting it zoom with the lens. I don't know why that should make a
difference, but it does.

For all its cost, I got results as good or better with my old Sunpak 522

I think they're both good shots, well presented. The first is general
stronger and more direct, but suffers somewhat from the inclusion of the
twiggy thing breaking the sand up.

 G'day all

I'm looking for a bit of PDML objectivity with these two images -
because I've lost mine. I've been looking at the damn things for so
long, I oscillate between thoughts of not bad and what a crock of
 s**t. and back again.

These are similar images taken at dusk on a south coast beach
 (New South
Wales). I've given up on colour renderings (dirty colours, noisy), so
mono conversion is the last straw.

Comments and (particularly) suggestions most appreciated.

RE: A thought or two for the New Year

2009-01-05 Thread John Coyle
Hilarious! But I have to relate a tale told me by my Aussie brother-in-law,
probably apocryphal...

Caught short one day in Central Queensland, Gerassimoff had to use a bush
dunny: having brushed the spider's webs away from the entry, he dropped his
pants and sat down with a sigh of relief. Seconds later, he shot out the
front of the dunny (no doors in these!), clasping his hand to his backside.
Medical examination showed he'd been bitten by a red-back spider (known
elsewhere as a black widow): all was well, as Gerassimoff survived the bite;
however, later, it was found the spider had died of alcoholic poisoning.

Ka-boom!

 Hi everyone,

I've been hibernating for a good while now, but had some time to
finally edit some vacation photos. I haven't been following the list
lately but I've seen some cool posts while going through the latest
ones; I see there is a future PDML book coming to my shopping list ;-)

Anyway, I spent Christmas in Negril, Jamaica, barely escaping the
winter storm (actually we had to stay one night in Charlotte, NC) and
put up this slide show for family and friends:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/sets/72157611814349511/show/

And also finally processed these shots from our vacation in Buzios,
 Brazil.
Buzios is a nice small town by the beach, two hours drive from Rio de
Janeiro. Very calm and relaxing place.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/sets/72157610707014522/show/

On a side note I had a chance to have a coffee with a former PDML
member in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and his couple were there on
vacation and I was visiting family (what a coincidence) some of you
might remember him, he used to post as Unca Mikey; I still have a
fresh memory of how time flew for a few hours while the three of us
discussed trips, history, books, politics and religion (yeah, almost
nothing left, eh?) I hope to find them somewhere again and repeat the
experience. I also hope he doesn't mind posting his photo of both of
us (mine came out all out of focus):

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/uncamikey/2846155255/sizes/l/

I'm the one with long hair BTW (which is much shorter now,
 business-style back again).

So, that's me for the last 5 months or so.

 Hope you like the photos,

 Cheers

 Fernando

Nice photos. Sigh. Envious. Especially like woman in water (not at sunset),
snorkler just below water line, and fishermen (second gallery).

 Sigh.
