Thanks Paul Rick and Christine. I tested the K10D and D200 Sunday. Light a bit softer, not much. Had the same settings on both cameras, so its as close as we'll get unscientifically. Then the flash will be the main light and the ambient light will be fill. That's how I shoot most of my indoor flash pics, and it appears to be what Christine was doing. Another vote for #1. Both are nice, but there's something about the ripples in the sand intersecting the tracks that makes it more interesting than #2. You might try lightening it overall, bumping up the contrast a little and darkening the mid-tones to see if you like it better - or maybe it retains more of a air of mystery as it is...YMMV. -p Brian Walters wrote: G'day all I'm looking for a bit of PDML objectivity with these two images - because I've lost mine. Re: Geso More flash testing
Interesting. But I think the comparison of the cat shots is unfair. You were much closer to the cat with the Pentax, which in my experience makes it harder to get balanced flash. Over all, however, I must agree that in this test and historically, the Nikon flash (and the firmware that control it) wins the race. Dave, I'm using a AF540 flash on the K20D. The results are inconsistent, or perhaps I just don't know how to use it. Re: PESO - Tracks
The first is a bit static with the tracks pretty much straight up the image - might try cropping out most of the LH side from the tracks to the left. The second is more dynamic and has more potential by cropping out the tracks that run from the URH edge to the ULH edge, leaving the trail from the RH corner curving up to the URH edge. RE: sic transit optio w60
but of course, I would not have wanted to have to do that sort of thing, anyway... what a PITA! You only have to do it once. You have to remember, PS cameras are not made to appeal to advanced photographers like us. They're made for lowest-common-denominator users, and as such have to be as simple and user friendly as possible. Pentax and other companies have to assume that someone taking snapshots is going to want the camera to perform exactly the same way every time they use it, so they make the camera reset itself unless someone like you tells it not to. It may not make a lot of sense to you, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who appreciate it. The book was falling apart, so I bought a new Legacy album as well, which is the brand I sell to my brides. I would guess I have about 60 hours of work in that project, but it turned out well. That's due in part to the virtual reality photos biz, which has kept me really busy, shooting 1000 frames a week or so. It's also the result of a project I undertook: the restoration of our wedding photos. They were 37 years old, cracked and creased. All of them had taken on a deep maroon shade. I scanned each of about 70 on the Epson 3200 flatbed, restored the color and retouched them. The book was falling apart, so I bought a new Legacy album as well, which is the brand I sell to my brides. I would guess I have about 60 hours of work in that project, but it turned out well. Which brings us to Grandma's birthday, where Grace presented her with the book. (Grace is our birthday elf and is the central figure at every event.). Here Grace waits anxiously while Grandma reads her card: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=8461593size=lg And here Grandma asks Grace, who is that? as she points to a wedding pic. RE: OT PESO - Thistle Cove
Lovely looking beach, well photographed. Bob -Original Message- From: pdml-boun...@pdml.net [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of David Savage Sent: 05 January 2009 13:53 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: OT PESO - Thistle Cove G'day Happy New Year to you all. I spent a lovely 5 days travelling around the south coast Goldfields region of W.A. over the new years period. Most of the time was spent in Esperance, famous for it's stunning coastline white sand beaches. The sand is so fine on some beaches it squeaks when you walk on it (it reminded me of walking on snow...but without the whole being cold thing). Anywho, here is a pano of Thistle Cove, part of the Cape Le Grand National Park. RE: PESO - Tracks
I think they're both good shots, well presented. The first is general stronger and more direct, but suffers somewhat from the inclusion of the twiggy thing breaking the sand up. Bob G'day all I'm looking for a bit of PDML objectivity with these two images - because I've lost mine. I've been looking at the damn things for so long, I oscillate between thoughts of not bad and what a crock of s**t. and back again. These are similar images taken at dusk on a south coast beach (New South Wales). I've given up on colour renderings (dirty colours, noisy), so mono conversion is the last straw. Comments and (particularly) suggestions most appreciated. http://www.blognow.com.au/PESO/108276/Tracks_1.html http://www.blognow.com.au/PESO/108277/Tracks_2.html Thanks and Cheers Brian -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
RE: A thought or two for the New Year
Hilarious! But I have to relate a tale told me by my Aussie brother-in-law, probably apocryphal... Caught short one day in Central Queensland, Gerassimoff had to use a bush dunny: having brushed the spider's webs away from the entry, he dropped his pants and sat down with a sigh of relief. Seconds later, he shot out the front of the dunny (no doors in these!), clasping his hand to his backside. Medical examination showed he'd been bitten by a red-back spider (known elsewhere as a black widow): all was well, as Gerassimoff survived the bite; however, later, it was found the spider had died of alcoholic poisoning. Ka-boom! I haven't been following the list lately but I've seen some cool posts while going through the latest ones; I see there is a future PDML book coming to my shopping list ;-) Anyway, I spent Christmas in Negril, Jamaica, barely escaping the winter storm (actually we had to stay one night in Charlotte, NC) and put up this slide show for family and friends: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/sets/72157611814349511/show/ And also finally processed these shots from our vacation in Buzios, Brazil. Buzios is a nice small town by the beach, two hours drive from Rio de Janeiro. Very calm and relaxing place. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferand/sets/72157610707014522/show/ On a side note I had a chance to have a coffee with a former PDML member in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and his couple were there on vacation and I was visiting family (what a coincidence) some of you might remember him, he used to post as Unca Mikey; I still have a fresh memory of how time flew for a few hours while the three of us discussed trips, history, books, politics and religion (yeah, almost nothing left, eh?) I hope to find them somewhere again and repeat the experience. I also hope he doesn't mind posting his photo of both of us (mine came out all out of focus): http://www.flickr.com/photos/uncamikey/2846155255/sizes/l/ I'm the one with long hair BTW (which is much shorter now, business-style back again).
