Depends on how the mirror/shutter mech is configured, sometimes the
same motor is used to prime both mechs in a cyclic fashion as in the
K-x.

Thanks to all for your comment.

I also initially though B&W for this shot but I couldn't get a decent
rendering. I dialled the red saturation back to baseline & added some
of the orange & yellow back in (I fully desaturate, play with the
colour temp, global saturation & curves adjustments for my B&W
conversions in LR).

But those who suggested it, please feel free to give it a go.

Cheers,

I'm the opposite here Rick, i like a bigger, heavier body. Much like mine.

I have not tried the D700, but it appears to be the same size as the
D200 or D300, and that size of camera body fits my hands well and the
D200 and 70-200 2.8 VR balances nicely, even with the weight of that

If Pentax comes out with a K-7x(with the Kx sensor which seems to be a

probably try that.

PESO - Cellist on Augusta

2010-03-07 Thread frank theriault
I'm struggling with this one. Took about 1/2 dozen of this young man
(the cigarette rather interested me), but the background was horrible
- not just passing pedestrians, but all sorts of junk kept getting in
the way, not matter what angle I shot from. Harsh light wasn't my
friend either. Even this shot (the least cluttered of the bunch) was
cropped severely to "clean things up" - at least a bit.

Does it work? I'd prefer more environment in the shot, but given
that's not possible what are your thoughts on this one:

I fear it may be one for the trashcan - an "almost but not quite".

I'd consider leaving the smaller light spots. Otherwise, I'd work with the
clone tool, as Paul suggests. I wouldn't bother with the small light spots
either those in front or behind. The large light area above his head, obviously
must go and "something" need be done with the light around his lower face and
chin. It's leaving of the sharp edges in that area, especially the high
contrast cigarette, that would present a problem for me. Not sure I have the
needed patience and steady hand. To a great extent, it depends upon how badly
you want to save this image.

might darken out the background and give you a nice focus on the highlighted
areas like the guy, his cigarette, the highlights in his hair and on both
hands, and parts of the cello. Maybe even a stronger contrast. Just a
thought. Ignore if you don't like it :-) Cheers, Christine

Subject: PESO - Cellist on Augusta

I'm struggling with this one. Took about 1/2 dozen of this young man
(the cigarette rather interested me), but the background was horrible
- not just passing pedestrians, but all sorts of junk kept getting in
the way, not matter what angle I shot from. Harsh light wasn't my
friend either. Even this shot (the least cluttered of the bunch) was
cropped severely to "clean things up" - at least a bit.

Does it work? I'd prefer more environment in the shot, but given
that's not possible what are your thoughts on this one:

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2010/03/cellist-on-augusta.html

I fear it may be one for the trashcan - an "almost but not quite".

Hope you enjoy. Comments encouraged.

cheers,
frank

2010-03-07 Thread Stan Halpin
Back long ago and far away when I was doing major long-distance
cycling, I knew several people who rode recumbents. I was never
tempted. One issue for me is the visibility, both the more limited
sight-line for the rider and the lower profile (literally and
figuratively) when on the road. In normal road bikes I found I
preferred shorter wheel base for the responsive handling (sports car
vs. comfy full-size sedan) and I think the recumbent would be a large
truck on this spectrum.

Re: PESO - Cellist on Augusta

2010-03-07 Thread Stan Halpin
I have never mastered the clone tool, so that option didn't come to
mind for me. Rather, I would like to see less crop!
For me the only really disturbing element is the poster on the wall
above his head. With a little study I was able to resolve what it was,
but it was still distracting. If the crop were to include a bit more
of the poster (so you could see the top of it against the wall) then
it would be a fixed element in the picture rather than the beginning/
bottom end of a path of lightness leading the eye out of the frame.
And/or, can you just darken that poster a smidgen?

I think this is a nice shot BTW. The harshness of the light matches
the intensity of the cellist.

Yes, Aluminum does do well for certain applications. But there's a
couple things I don't like about it, most due to my overall dislike of
stiff rides (as opposed to harsh rides, stiff is not harsh) and
longevity issues. Aluminum frames wear out as aluminum has a limited
fatigue life (unlike steel) and a compliant aluminum frame is more
susceptible to this than a stiff one. This is an issue for me as I
tend to keep my bikes long-term (My main ride is 12 years old and it
will still be in use after the Honky Tonk arrives) That said, for a
track bike or race bike where stiffness is a major win and limited
lifespan is not an issue, Aluminum does very well and provides a
lower-cost high performance alternative to Carbon (and without some of
the risks of Carbon)

Re: Manual Lens on DS

Be sure that the custom function 'Use Aperture Ring' is set to
'Permitted' and set the camera to M mode. Then you have two options as
to metering.

1. Use the DoF preview, this will give you a numerical readout for how
far off the currently selected exposure is, it reads out up to +/- 3
stops IIRC. Note the readout only is accurate when DoF preview is
engaged.

2. Press the AE-Lock button and the camera will stop down the lens,
meter and then set the appropriate shutter speed.

If you only care about shooting wide open or are using screwmount or
preset aperture lenses you can also use Av mode, but it will meter for
wide open only.

Most people use option 2 in this case.

Re: Manual Lens on DS

2010-03-07 Thread John Graves

Adam,

Thank you. You are confirming what I am seeing. The lens is a Super
Tak 85 MM F1.9. In the house, I can seem to get reasonable exposures
using the preview switch and the function set to manual.

Never mind. The mind needs refreshing once in a while. The lens has a
preview switch that allows focusing wide open with auto stop down or
controlling the aperture with the lens setting directly. The problem is
that even at 4000th of a second. F1.9 is going to overexpose at ISO
200. It does help to have all the controls set right.

Useful resource: Pentax P-TTL flash comparison

2010-03-07 Thread Igor Roshchin

It is possible that all other PDMLers know this resource
(or some don't care for it - as I know some people here don't care
about [if not simply detest] flashes), but it was rather useful to me:
http://pttl.mattdm.org/overview

Very nice summary for each P-TTL flash plus comparison across models
for each feature.

Found a legendary lens on Craigslist!

2010-03-07 Thread CheekyGeek
Came home from a visit with my Dad in an Omaha hospital yesterday with
a bit of extra cargo. A lens I never thought I'd get the chance to
own: Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 Macro (otherwise known as the Bokina).
Got it in a K-mount (along with the matching 1:1 converter) and also a
genuine Pentax M42 adapter for the grand total of $140. It happened to
show up on Craigslist a few days before and I was happy to find it
still available when I got there on Friday. As it turns out the lens
was literally 6 blocks away from the hospital that my dad was in. It
is a gorgeous lens and I'll share some pictures of it (and with it in
coming days). I bought it from the original owner and have the
original manual and registration card, dated March 10, 1981.

I'm also wanting to do some 1:2 and portrait side-by-side comparison
shots with it and the Tamron SP 90mm f2.5 macro that I got a couple of
weeks ago. (I don't have the 1:1 adapter for the Tamron. Maybe those
comparioson will be useful to someone.

The guy also had a SMC K 500mm f4.5 with original case that could only
be fairly described as MINT. That is a BIG lens with an objective lens
nearly the size of a SAUCER.

Here's a wider crop (from another of the images that, for reasons of

tighter crop):

PESO - Cellist on Augusta - wider crop

2010-03-07 Thread frank theriault
Stan wondered how a wider crop of my earlier PESO might look, and for
the "benefit" (such as it is) of Stan and possibly others who might
have been curious (but might not have looked back at the original
thread to see this one), here's our cellist friend with more back- and
foreground:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/cellist-on-augusta-wider-crop.html

I cropped from a different photo that I took seconds before or after
the earlier PESO as there were fewer "offensive bits" in this version.
I still think there are to many distractions in this version. I
really like environment in street shots, but it has to be part of the
story and be aesthetically pleasing - or at least not offensive as
this is to my eye.

Anyway, comment if you wish, but I'm putting this out there more to
contrast with the earlier PESO than anything else. If do prefer this

For me, a recumbent would be ~right out~ for the city, especially
messengering, where ability to zip between cars and hop curbs and
other obstacles in emergency situations is helpful.

I do think I might like a 'bent for long flattish rides, but if any
climbing is involved, I'd want the lightness and short wheelbase that
a traditional diamond frame provides.

And, if I had back issues (which thankfully I don't), a recumbent
would be great!

One thing I'll say is that certainly aluminium is a compromise. If
money were no object I'd ride CF. But for the cost, aluminium does
very well.

You're right about aluminium's longevity (or lack of it). It
literally starts micro-cracking the moment it's put together. 3 to 5
years is the longest I'd ride one (meaning that my Fondriest is
getting very long-in-the-tooth). For a messenger frame, which tends
to have a short lifespan anyway, it's not such an issue, but for the
average cyclist, it is something to consider. Steel frames last
forever if treated well. Tubes can be replaced when damaged.

For longer rides, steel would be my preference, which is why I'm
currently putting together a road bike based on an old mid-nineties
Marinoni lugged steel frame. It should be like riding a barcalounger
compared to my trackbike.

Funny. We have those all over here. :-)

But we have Costco, who fills your tires with Nitrogen (for
temperature stability in tires suburban housewives drag race on our
super freeways while the kids are in school and the mate's at work).
Just look for the green valve caps on the tires.

I'll have to check that out.

Tires on my Focus came with nitro-fill from the dealer. Just got a
notice my years's membership will expire this month. I was debating
whether to renew.

The big problem has been a scarcity of locations where I can get the
tires topped up if needed when I was traveling. FWIW, it does appear the
tires don't leak down as fast with the nitro-fill.

I joined Costco last month to use their mini-lab for printing, guess
I'll have to check about getting the nitro-fill from there as well.
Probably help with the location availability problem as well.

FWIW, I think this is mostly urban legend, passed down through
cyclists, mechanics and (ahem) bike shop owners. Aluminum is used for
frames of racing motorcycles and aircraft and lasts a lot longer than
5 years without trouble. Granted, it's likely to be different alloys,
etc, but the basic technology is the same. I know plenty of people
who've used aluminum-framed bikes for 10 years or more.

A more cynical note: I can't believe aluminum-framed bikes would be
sold *at all* in the liability-lawsuit-crazed U.S. if half the stories
of their limited lifespans had much truth to them.

Yes, Aluminum does do well for certain applications. But there's a

lucky and they did, so I plunked down my cash and I should have my new
bike next weekend.

Kona make some very nice bikes and Dura Ace is pretty damned nice
stuff. Congrats on your new bike; the weather's looking pretty good
for some good riding!

cheers,
frank

I do wish that there was more DA on the bike than just the shifters
(the drivetrain is 9 speed Tiagra with a 105 RD), and yeah, the
weather is great, today's my 3rd day in a row on the bike and I'm
looking at a solid week of nice commuting weather.

Funny. We have those all over here. :-) But we have Costco, who fills
your tires with Nitrogen (for temperature stability in tires suburban
housewives drag race on our super freeways while the kids are in school
and the mate's at work). Just look for the green valve caps on the
tires.

I'll have to check that out.

Tires on my Focus came with nitro-fill from the dealer. Just got a notice
my years's membership will expire this month. I was debating whether to
renew.

The big problem has been a scarcity of locations where I can get the tires
topped up if needed when I was traveling. FWIW, it does appear the tires
don't leak down as fast with the nitro-fill.

And tires filled with Nitrogen are less subject to pressure variations due
to temperature changes.

I joined Costco last month to use their mini-lab for printing, guess I'll
have to check about getting the nitro-fill from there as well. Probably
help with the location availability problem as well.

On the basis that I almost always use my bigma at 500 and manual

urgently need impression about Metz flash

2010-03-07 Thread Igor Roshchin

Hi All,

I was trying to place an order for a Pentax AF 540 FGZ flash, when
I discovered that Metz 58 AF-1PS costs just $15 more.

I've never had experience with any Metz flashes.
Two main concerns that I have:
1. From what I read, all control is done via "soft" buttons, - e.g.
via contextual menus. How ergonomic/cumbersome is it?

2. Have you had any issues with the compatibility with Pentax bodies
(e.g. metering reproducibility, functionality, etc.)?

Additionally:
3. How useful is the second reflector (source) when you tilt/swivel
the flash head?

I will need to place an order soon (Sunday, maybe Monday), so
I would appreciate your quick responses.

Igor

I haven't used the new "USB" Metz flashes, so can't comment on AF58
usability, but I used several of the earlier big (40MZ.., 54MZ..) models
on Pentax bodies before going dark side, and was very happy with them.
Not with P-TTL itself though :)

The secondary flash might be used to create eye catchlights in close-up
portraits (when you have absolutely no other choice but to do close
portraits with on camera flash :), not for much else. You can safely
ignore this feature.
Fill light from this tiny reflector was either too weak or too harsh,
coming from small in-lens-axis source. Difficult to control,
unpredictable, pretty useless IMO.
A business card sized piece of whatever white (usualy card sized white
back of a card :) rubber-banded to tilted main reflector seems to be
much more reliable as fill-in/catchlight.

cheers

Aircraft have limited stress lifetimes for exactly this reason. And a
rebuild for a smaller aircraft pretty much comes down to stripping it
and replacing the high-stress items at a certain set point in the
lifespan. Aircraft also get inspected every 100 hours and if a pattern
of stress cracks is found entire fleets will be grounded.

Your motorcycle frame benefits from suspension which damps alot of the
vibrations and stress (Aluminum FS bicycles also benefit from this by
a large amount) and also benefits from the extra strength you can
build in since compliance is provided by the suspension. FS bikes (and
motorcycles) are massively overbuilt compared to the frames we are
talking about here (a typical road bike frame made from aluminum is
3-4lbs)

Aluminum frames don't have legal issues since the average user doesn't
ride all that much and frame warranties tend to be quite good. Frame
life is 5-10 years under heavy use, 10-20 years under light use,
essentially forever under typical consumer use (most bike owners ride
less than 100km per year). The real concern with Aluminum is if you
are a heavy user (Racer, messenger, the hardcore MTB user running a
rigid or hardtail) or if you buy an older frame which has been used in
such a manner.
