Does anyone have a smaller, reasonably sturdy tripod that does fit
in carry on (under 18 folded) that they really like? Preferably
not too horribly expensive.

The Feisol Travellers should be quite good, presuming they are of
similar build to the Tournament and Classic that I have.

They seem to be a similar concept to the Benros and about twice the
cost.

It's always tricky to determine how much of what you are paying for is
quality, performance and brand name.

I wonder how long before we get the option of the following:

Set to full and you will have the full range of focus travel, switch to limit
above 0.6m and you get 0.6m to infinity. Switch to limit below 0.6m and you
have the true macro range up to 0.6m. I presume we're talking about the FA

I just saw all of the techo talk on the other thread about a
recommended portrait lens and references to the FA 100m/2.8 macros,
which I have, thanks to Steve, just been enabled with.

Can someone put all of this stuff into fairygirl speak for me? Just
what does that limiter thingee do anyways?

What I understood is:

For a LONG THROW Macro lens like the FA100/2.8, *IF* the auto-focus has to
hunt goes all the way to infinity and back to closest focus and then to
whatever the subject distance is, it takes a LOOONG time getting
there.

A Focus limiter limits the range over which the lens can hunt - instead of
going from closest focus to infinity and beyond, you can limit the range
over which it is allowed to hunt for focus - say between 1.5 meters and
infinity or such. It can hunt through this limited range much more quickly
than it can through the entire focus range.

Apparently most of the long throw is in the last bit going down to closest
focus.

OT: My first race

2010-05-03 Thread David Mann
I ran my first half-marathon event last Saturday. The race was run on a mildly
hilly course around the back of the resort town of Hanmer Springs, which is
famous for its hot pools.

It was a real day to remember. I felt good on the run and I really enjoyed it.
I train on the hills at home so I was really in my element here. The scenery
was very nice but I didn't carry a camera on the run. Maybe next time I'll
shoulder a tripod-mounted Pentax 6x7 and see how that affects my time.

I finished in just under 1 hour 54 minutes, placing 68th out of 143 in my
grade. I was wanting to finish under two hours so I'm happy. Even more so to
be in the top half.

Now my legs have another 4-1/2 days to recover for another half-marathon this
Saturday. We'll be overnighting in Hanmer Springs on the way home from that
one so I might go for a wander and see if I can take a couple of photos from
the course.

I wrote a race report with some more details and a couple of photos if anyone's
interested.

Re: Tripods that fit in carry on

2010-05-03 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I've carried-on my Feisol CT3442 Tournament tripod several times.
Folded and in its case, with Acratech head, they're 19x5.5 and weigh
4.2 lbs. I don't put It in the carry-on bag although it can fit if I
take it out of its case.

On Sunday, May 2, 2010, Larry Colen l...@red4est.com wrote:
It wasn't until I started thinking about packing that I realized that my
'sturdy' tripod won't fit in my carry one luggage.

I'm not going to have time to do something about it this week, but I did some
quick research anyways, and the benro travel angel tripods seem pretty
interesting. Does anyone have experience with them?

Are their quick release heads by any chance compatible with the generic
 manfrotto mount?

Does anyone have a smaller, reasonably sturdy tripod that does fit in carry
on (under 18 folded) that they really like?  Preferably not too horribly
 expensive.

Re: PESO: The Fine Diner

Thanks, Ecke.

It is indeed a neat little place. There is little on-site parking, so
people were walking from all directions towards this popular place on
Sunday Morning.

The diner is located downtown, in a little village that has manage to
retain its rural charm despite the nearby interstate and the
substantial population growth in the surrounding area. Clinton is one
of the two hubs of Hunterdon County, NJ, one of the richest counties
in the US. There are, however, several family farms still operating
in the area. Clinton is now mostly museums and antique shops. The
Red Mill (the subject of another PESO) and the Stone Mill are just two
short blocks away.

Re: limiter thingee..

2010-05-03 Thread Steven Desjardins
I'd answer but I've mostly forgotten. I think that the full setting
means it will search the whole range while the limited will do either
macro or normal, depending on which range you're in when you tern the
knob. It's not a matter or degree, you set either full or limited. I
also seem to remember that the MF setting tightened the mechanism a
bit to make manual focus easier. I suggest you just try it out and
see what works.

Thanks, Rick.

Yes, I love the Red Mill, and the Stone Mill (now an art museum)
across the river. Several years ago, my son's best friend got married
right outside the Red Mill -- a truly lovely venue. He was a sculptor
in metal and a blacksmith, and had spent a few years restoring the
historic blacksmith shop behind the mill, which he rented for a while
as his studio.

This location is in central New Jersey, the most crowded of the US
states, by the town of Clinton, and much of Hunterdon County, retain
much of their rural charm.

Re: GESO - Desperately Seeking Inspiration

Brian,

I find the lighthouse, trains, and interior with light streaming both
compelling and well composed.

Maybe you're not in a photographic black hole... more likely your
editorial skills have been honed so that now you don't simply like a
shot because you were there and you took it. That's a good thing.

When I find myself feeling similar to what you describe, I try to find
a place that inspires me and then I try not to rush. Sometimes I'll
get excited about what I'm seeing, get in a hurry, and then come away
with nothing that satisifes me.

A learning experience if nothing else.

Tom .

It was a real day to remember.  I felt good on the run and I really enjoyed
it.  I train on the hills at home so I was really in my element here.  The
scenery was very nice but I didn't carry a camera on the run.  Maybe next
time I'll shoulder a tripod-mounted Pentax 6x7 and see how that affects my
 time.

I finished in just under 1 hour 54 minutes, placing 68th out of 143 in my

to be in the top half.

Now my legs have another 4-1/2 days to recover for another half-marathon this
Saturday.  We'll be overnighting in Hanmer Springs on the way home from that

 the course.

I wrote a race report with some more details and a couple of photos if

I seriously think all have varying degrees of something. I've picked a few
for comment: Goods Shed; Clean and beautifully composed. Decay; I might like it
even better in BW. Moore Point Lighthouse; Would like to see it, also, in
color and less centered. Holding On; An especially well chosen scene, but sort
of suffocated and too near center. Haunted; Large central fence post is aligned
with the house and gets in my face..so to speak.
Nice set!

Thanks.

It is an upscale little diner in an upscale little village. It sits
on the banks of the South Branch of the Raritan River, near parks and
museums. A superb place for breakfast before or after a nice walk.
The Red Mill, subject of my other PESO yesterday, in just a couple of
blocks away, as in the Old Stone Mill, now an art museum, and a place
to rent canoes.

.the ball head. However pod itself is getting a bit scarred up from
.banging into rocks and such. I think a shoulder bag would be better. I
.can't find one long enough for the pod I own though.

Interesting ideas, both - never used anything like that.

Most of the time my monopod is either in the trunk or my hands, when it doubles
as walking stick in rough terrain. Did attach the older one to my bag, but
found it rather clumsy and later bought a shoulder bag. But as soon as I enter
the area I'm shooting, out comes the walking stick - er, monopod. I do use it
to steady the camera, now and then.

PESO: Playing in the fountain

2010-05-03 Thread Charles Robinson
I've been in Mojiang, China for the past few days. In the center of the town
is Sun Square, which has a cool big sculpture to represent the sun (as the
Tropic of Cancer runs right through the city). The fountains were finally
running on my last afternoon there so I wandered in to photograph the Sun
with the water around it.

The sculpture photos ended up so-so, but some of the people cooling off in the
water really were entertained by this pale white guy walking so close to the
water and decided to get my attention.

Taken (thankfully) with the K10D and the Da16-50. I kinda like it.

well, you can convert any music file to a format an iPod will play, but

I really shouldn't peruse craigslist when I don't have excess money.

I found a Tamron 300/2.8 on CL today for $650. That seems like it might
be a pretty good price, depending on the quality of the lens.

Generic quality is excellent. There are (at least) three versions. I
paid £400 about seven years ago. Should come with leather case,
filters, caps and hood, which mine did not. The PKA adaptor is reputed
to be flakey.

Can i get rid of it some how.??

Looks good but I'd like to see it in a larger size, at least 800 pixels
on the longest side?

I can see why. Too bad about your HD crash! It's happened to me also.
Chances are you're also aware, but will mention that a Spanish dancer shot
often lends itself to allowing motion in the swirling long skirts.
There may be some hidden motion in this shot, but just not obvious.

 Unfortunately I lost the original
images from this set in a hard drive crash and have not
been able to recover them so I had to depend on my upload to
Flicker which is, as you noted, too small.  I will do
better!  But thanks for the nice comments.  I was
particularly intrigued by the flowing yellow dress and her
expression.  Certainly a favorite of mine.
