You might clone some grass into that area to make it less

Interesting scene.

It is rather peevesome that I can't shoot level. One of the

I hope you can use the time to travel more. I have a few years to go, but
I'm looking forward to it as an opportunity. My brother-in-law retired
earlier this year after a very successful career and he and my sister
immediately embarked on a long holiday in the Far East followed by a long,
slow boat home calling at all sorts of exotic places. They're now planning
their next tour.

I know you've already seen much of the world in your capacity as Felix
Leiter, but I've always felt rather sorry that young Americans (& Canadians)
don't get to travel the world in the same way as the Aussies, Nzers,
Safricans and to a lesser extent British. One sees and meets quite a few
retired Americans who are at last seeing the world and when I've asked them
about this phenomenon they explain that the young feel under too much
pressure to get their careers started and once started they have such short
holidays that it's impossible.

Even the people on military bases don't seem to be able to get out of the
base very much.

Nice atmospheric picture, by the way. It reminds me of a comment between a
couple of young Aussie travellers I heard in Greenwich once: "Jeez,I can't
wait to get back home. If I have to look at another old building I think
I'll spew". Travel broadens the mind.

If the Flash-based video is causing problems, it's probably worth

Yes, I stand corrected - I misread some of the stuff I was looking at to try

Hi Bill,

Is that Metz a handle mount or a shoe mount? I've been looking at
getting a better flash than the unpredictable and crappy Pentax ones.
I looked in B&H for the one you mentioned, but it appears to have been
superceded by newer models.

Just for the record - which camera model are you using for which the Pentax
flashes are "unpredictable and crappy"? I had the 540 on my DS2 and it was...
so-so. No better on the K10D. Tons improved (perfect? no. But much improved)

I agree. The 540 works very well on the K7. I use it in a variety of

I played with my K7 and its pop-up flash on Saturday. Even the K7 pop-up flash
nails exposures better than the 540 on my K10D ever did. I took a photo of a
shiny stainless-steel oven and the picture came out bright and shiny! Well, as
shiny as it could be because the stove needs cleaning but the point is that
it didn't turn out BLACK like it otherwise would have with older gear.

Maybe you just need a new camera. :-)

I've been thinking the same thing. The question is, is what I need a
new camera, or new camera system? A recent experience at the wedding
of my niece was so frustrating as to make me contemplate the complete
sale of all my Pentax gear and moving to another maker. I think I'll
borrow a K-7 and do some playing around first though, as I've been
with Pentax since 1980 or so, accumulating so many fine lenses. The
combination of my visual degradation and more frequent need for low
light focusing demands good autofocus, esp in low light.

The D200 pop up flash is very accurate.

I have the same problem with my K10 and af360. All over the place. I
know havecertain cameras to do certain jobs. I like the K10-D for
landscapes and flowers. I like the Nikon D200 for portraits and such,
and the D1H and D2h are my action jackson cameras.
The G3 is my IR camera.

I've never seen such a sign - Cotty or Rick might know better, representing

Lightroom interruptus

2010-05-24 Thread Bob W
Anybody any idea what the impact on database and picture integrity would be
of interrupting a catalogue import would be?

I am importing a large-ish catalogue from a network drive onto a local
drive. It's taken 24 hours so far; it's only 50% through, and I'm bored with
it. I'm thinking of killing it, plugging the NAS drive into the ethernet
port of the PC and restarting, to get it done in polynomial time.

tia,
Bob

Re: K7 first thoughts

2010-05-24 Thread Bob Sullivan
Gonz,
I haven't done much flash with the K-7 and 540. I'll have to try more.
The K-7's on camera flash has been OK with the 31mm limited lens,
but I don't care much for the pre-flash and lag associated with it.
I kept my DS2 because I understand how to get reliable flash exposures
out of it.
I think that's kind of sad, but there it is.

Annual PDML exhibition???

2010-05-24 Thread Bob Sullivan
Christine,

A gallery exhibition in different cities around the world would be fun,
but let's see how this one turns out first.
How are the participants going to feel once the gallery is down and
pictures returned home?
Would they be willing to do it again next year? How about Sue and Dank Haus?
Will the international folks 'opt-in' to participate more?
I'd give it another year or two before I'd try to take it on the road.

Together, the K-x and the K20 are almost everything I need in a camera.

The K20 has excellent ergonomics, and the K-x pretty good ergonomics.
The K20 is better at low ISO the K-x is much better at high iso.
The K-x is better at metering and autofocus.
The K20 is a bit more comfortable in my hand, the K-x is smaller,
lighter and easier to carry.

I read a lot of discussion about a new, high end Pentax SLR being announced in
September. What is the likelihood of that happening?

Probably pretty good. Though for what it would cost you to sell your
K20 and pick up the new top of the line Pentax next fall, you could
probably keep your K20 and pick up a K-x today.

Thanks for your comments,

This one does look better, but it may just be the crop. In both
versions, the harsh shadow under her upper arm, seemingly caused by the
flash, is a bit of a distraction. Otherwise, I really like it.

We should take a very firm grip of Dank Haus and, politely but firmly,

it didn't turn out BLACK like it otherwise would have with older gear.

Assuming that the scheduling worked, I don't even know what order of
magnitude to charge. If it's a 3 hour affair, that's easily 6 hours of
work, so I could see people charging anywhere from $150 to $1200 for that.

A gallery exhibition in different cities around the world would be fun,
but let's see how this one turns out first.
How are the participants going to feel once the gallery is down and
pictures returned home?
Would they be willing to do it again next year? How about Sue and Dank

Will the international folks 'opt-in' to participate more?
I'd give it another year or two before I'd try to take it on the road.

Well, I obviously can't answer all your questions, Bob. And if DANK offers
for next year, I have no problem with that, but I just thought it would be
fun to put my international idea out there.

And as to your last point, it's my view the exhibit is *already* on the
road--I mean Chicago ain't homebase for PDML--there is no homebase--well, I
suppose you could say *hyperspace* is our homebase, but after that it seems
to me it's all on the road--Chicago was just the 1st stop. Cheers,

As awesome as that would be, it'll never happen. There are too many
technical and cost issues in the way. Plus, the system wasn't as
widely-used as K mount cameras/lenses, and the 110 lenses really weren't
that great. There is the option of buying a Micro 4/3rds camera and the
Pentax 110 mount adaptor, but there's no aperture control since the
aperture was in the body of the 110 camera.

I'd say forget about it, unfortunately.

If you have an ethernet hub/switch, just plugging both the computer and
the NAS into the hub/switch should take care of any "crossover cable"
type problems, if it's reasonably modern (less than 3-5 years old).
It'll also let you run at wired speed, which is often faster than
wireless, even at the same nominal "bit rate".

Re: Lightroom interruptus

2010-05-24 Thread Eric Featherstone
That may well be the problem, did you get a link light at either end?

10 & 100 Mbit twisted pair is rather like RS232 in that for direct
device-device (e.g. PC, NAS) connections you need a crossover cable
(likewise for direct hub-hub or switch-switch connections) and for
device-hub or device-switch connections you use a normal cable. Later
((last 5 years maybe?) 10/100 switches often had one or more
auto-sensing ports so you can get away with normal cables. I believe
gigabit ethernet has auto-sensing built-in to the spec.

It occurs to me that there's another possible problem with you trying
a direct connection like that. Even if you had a crossover cable or
auto-sensing ports such that you had a link light, if either your PC
or NAS gets its IP address dynamically from a DHCP server elsewhere on
your network with the direct connection that server is cut-out of the
circuit, so no IP address and the two devices won't see each other.

No matter, as long as you have a solution that works though!

Re: You are the best, folks :-)

2010-05-24 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Tim,
One of those you cant read must be mine...
I definitely can't read my own writing :)

although I signed a couple of books on the tab by one of my photos...
not on the inside cover..

that would help as a clue

anyway - Happy birthday!

Really!!!

I just had a look in my snail mailbox.
There I found a signed copy of the Book (you know, The Annual) for my birthday.
I can decipher most of the autographs, but some are a mystery to me.

Thank you very much guys 'n gals :-D
Dough, Miserere, "other" Tim, Jostein, Paul, Mark (I presume), Jay,
Chris, Christine, Stan, Ted, Bob, and to those who can't write your
own name :-p

I can hardly express my surprise and gratitude. Best present this
year. Absolutely!!!
