Re: Annual PDML exhibition???

Christine,

I can and likely will talk to my local camera club bosses. I intend to
show them the book and indicate that an exhibition can be arranged with
these pictures or the pictures of the next year. However, I can tell you
from the start, that by definition my local camera club is a non-profit
organization. They a legally disallowed to come up with exhibition with
price tags attached to pictures.

If you think it is not worth our while, please let me know. Otherwise, I
would want to proceed with what I outlined above.

Re: Annual PDML exhibition???

2010-05-24 Thread Stan Halpin
I agree with the general notion of a possible change in venue. Nothing against
Sue, the Gallery itself was very nicely done, etc.
Issues, aside from location - a "real" for-profit Gallery is not likely to get
the volume of sales to make such a large show worthwhile. Non-profit galleries
(e.g., Universities, community centers, bank lobbies) may be reluctant to see
the images offered for sale just because of the book-keeping hassles. I like
the idea of a peripatetic show but you may have found the unique appropriate
locale Christine.

I know some people who know some people in the local arts and gallery community
- I plan to float the general concept with them but it will be a month before I
can do that.

Is there a prize for the furthest delievery distance?

I reckon its mine; Malmo Sweeden near the Arctic to Hobart Tasmania - next

Re: PDML 2010 Annual Reconciliation?

2010-05-24 Thread Cory Waters

Why does it have to be a big deal? Just send Mark a few bones.
Last year he came out of pocket for a few books to send around the
Pentax world (GFM, Pentax USA, etc.) for promotion and good will. I
assume he's done the same thing this time around.
If he comes out uncomfortably ahead (doubtful), I'm sure he'll put
the money to good use. (Scotch, saving kittens, buying us a new Gulf of
Mexico, K to Sony mount kits...)

Cory
sent the ten dollars that Doug overpaid me for his copy of the book.

Don't worry about this Bill. I'm doing fine with the money people have
chipped in so far. All but one person has paid up for their gallery
printing and that's coming soon. We're close enough to even that it's
not worth fussing over. I've been so tied up with preparing my GFM
presentation I haven't done the math but I'm sure I'm less than $50.00

Re: Cameras in a Crowd, an Observation

2010-05-24 Thread P. J. Alling
Once I answered this the first time, I started looking. At the
Renesance festival I saw in order of prevelance, Kodak ZLRs, so many
that I didn't bother trying to count after a while. One Nikon, D40 or
D60, I didn't look to closely, maybe half a dozen of Canon's latest
incarnation of Rebel and one guy I couldn't miss because of his big
white lens and because his kit probably cost him more than every lens
and body I own combined. He had two Canon D7's one with their 28-70
f2.8 IS lens the other with their latest 70-200 f2.8 IS lens. Must have
been $7000-8000 bucks of camera equipment wanking around. Hell I've
only paid more than that for a /car/' once in my life.

Last sunday was Bay to Breakers, an annual footrace across San
Francisco. Few people seem to care about the "race" part, honestly:
tens of thousands of people (generally of college age) walk the route
drunk, high and partying. Lots of people show up in costumes ranging
from adult babies to superheroes to swarms of bees, and there are always
scantily-clad (or even naked) people amongst the crowd too. Because of
all this, most people show up with their cameras. I kept an eye out for
two kinds of cameras out of curiosity: Pentax cameras and film cameras.

I saw four Pentaxes: two dSLRs (late models, though not sure which), a
W90 and an entry-level model whose number I couldn't see.

I saw four film cameras: a Canon T-something, a Nikon F2 and two P&S
ultra-zoom Olympuses (Olympi?)

Digitals from Canon, Sony, Nikon, Casio and some other brands were
represented quite frequently, though I didn't attempt to keep track of
them. Lots of them were ultra-zoom models, though, from every brand
that makes one. The fact that there were as many film cameras as
Pentaxes is somewhat alarming. I saw a few toy cameras (Holgas, etc),
but I don't count them under film cameras since they're more of a
hobbyist niche than 35mm cameras are (though admitedly they're heading
that way).

What sorts of cameras do you notice when you're out in a crowd?

John

Assuming that the scheduling worked, I don't even know what order of

It's about the same as a wedding, ask what you'd be comfortable charging

Hi Bill,

Is that Metz a handle mount or a shoe mount? I've been looking at
getting a better flash than the unpredictable and crappy Pentax ones.
I looked in B&H for the one you mentioned, but it appears to have been
superceded by newer models.

Hi Gonz, the 60 CT-2 is a handle mount flash with a seperate power pack.
What I wanted for wedding work at the time was a big autoflash, and the Metz
has served me well for almost 25 years in that capacity.
It's exposure accuracy measured out to within 1/10 stop over several
situations and distances, which is certainly at least as accurate as any ttl
thing that Pentax has ever made, and I suspect a lot more accurate than
most, since I have generally found Pentax and flash control to be not quite
on the same page with each other.
The K7 may be better, I haven't bothered to try finding out. All I have that
will talk to it is the aformentioned 540ftz (or whatever the big shoe mount
flash is these days), and since it is guaranteed to give ugly light due to
where it

sits, the Metz gets the nod from me every time.
I suppose at some point I should figure out the off camera ttl thing, but I
have studio lights for off camera work, so I'm just not seeing a need.

I saw a few toy cameras (Holgas, etc),
but I don't count them under film cameras since they're more of a
hobbyist niche than 35mm cameras are (though admitedly they're heading
that way).

What sorts of cameras do you notice when you're out in a crowd?

me hold it for a minute while we chatted. Interesting little camera, but
I'm a viewfinder guy.

Re: What to charge to photograph a party?

2010-05-24 Thread Bob Sullivan
Larry,
That's hard to figure, depends on how good friends they are.
Based on seeing you work in Chicago, you'll surely shoot enough pictures.
And the quality will be good, but you'll have trouble editing it all down.
You could shoot 400-500 pictures and have to choose the best 50.
That's not easy. I think you have to charge them for the time 6+ hours
at some nominal rate, less than $100 and more than $25 per hour for friends.
For somebody who walked over to your table, saw your pictures, and just asked,
I'd think about it some more...probably double the above rates.
You really don't want to sell yourself at $25 per hour.
You're a better photographer than that!
Regards, Bob S.

Re: Lightroom interruptus

2010-05-24 Thread Eric Featherstone
That may well be the problem, did you get a link light at either end?

10 & 100 Mbit twisted pair is rather like RS232 in that for direct
device-device (e.g. PC, NAS) connections you need a crossover cable
(likewise for direct hub-hub or switch-switch connections) and for
device-hub or device-switch connections you use a normal cable. Later
((last 5 years maybe?) 10/100 switches often had one or more
auto-sensing ports so you can get away with normal cables. I believe
gigabit ethernet has auto-sensing built-in to the spec.

It occurs to me that there's another possible problem with you trying
a direct connection like that. Even if you had a crossover cable or
auto-sensing ports such that you had a link light, if either your PC
or NAS gets its IP address dynamically from a DHCP server elsewhere on
your network with the direct connection that server is cut-out of the
circuit, so no IP address and the two devices won't see each other.

No matter, as long as you have a solution that works though!

If you have an ethernet hub/switch, just plugging both the computer and
the NAS into the hub/switch should take care of any "crossover cable"
type problems, if it's reasonably modern (less than 3-5 years old).
It'll also let you run at wired speed, which is often faster than
wireless, even at the same nominal "bit rate".

Hi Everyone:

Sue does little videos of exhibit opening receptions and posts them to
YouTube. Here's one she's done; I did the photography, nothing special,
just some quick shots.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmGv_gBoT70

She'd like to do one for our opening reception, and she has asked me to
put a call out for photos. Anyone interested in letting Sue use a few of
their opening reception shots, please send them to Sue directly at
bartongall...@sbcglobal.net . You, of course, retain copyright, and Sue
said it's no problem to put your copyright data on the photo as we often
do. I'll be sending a few--course, a few is all I have. I shot so little.
I thought I'd send along our group shot too.

Cheers, Christine

As awesome as that would be, it'll never happen. There are too many
technical and cost issues in the way. Plus, the system wasn't as
widely-used as K mount cameras/lenses, and the 110 lenses really weren't
that great. There is the option of buying a Micro 4/3rds camera and the
Pentax 110 mount adaptor, but there's no aperture control since the
aperture was in the body of the 110 camera.

I'd say forget about it, unfortunately.

Sounds like a great idea Christine. No objections here.

Christine,

A gallery exhibition in different cities around the world would be fun,
but let's see how this one turns out first.
How are the participants going to feel once the gallery is down and
pictures returned home?
Would they be willing to do it again next year? How about Sue and Dank
Haus?

Will the international folks 'opt-in' to participate more?
I'd give it another year or two before I'd try to take it on the road.

Well, I obviously can't answer all your questions, Bob. And if DANK offers
for next year, I have no problem with that, but I just thought it would be
fun to put my international idea out there.

And as to your last point, it's my view the exhibit is *already* on the
road--I mean Chicago ain't homebase for PDML--there is no homebase--well, I
suppose you could say *hyperspace* is our homebase, but after that it seems
to me it's all on the road--Chicago was just the 1st stop. Cheers,
Christine

No kidding. I'm thinking more in terms of getting a K7 when the new
camera comes out and using my K10D as it's backup (I never got a K20D).
I'll most likely get the K7 replacement, or its replacement, eventually.

What to charge to photograph a party?

2010-05-24 Thread Larry Colen
Some friends stopped by when driving through town last night and we
grabbed a bite at the local taqueria. I was showing them my 'best of'
folder of prints and someone else there asked if I'd be interested in a
job shooting an event, I think it was his parents 50th anniversary.

Assuming that the scheduling worked, I don't even know what order of
magnitude to charge. If it's a 3 hour affair, that's easily 6 hours of
work, so I could see people charging anywhere from $150 to $1200 for that.

not so cunning after all. The machine did not recognise the device over

Did you make the ethernet connection directly from NAS to PC, or via a
hub/switch? And if directly did you remember to use a crossover cable?

I've got a web page of the gallery photos.

I could easily add to that.

I just sent Sue an email telling her folks are interested in reading the
cv/bio info and that when she has a chance, she can send the info to me.
Then I'll cordinate with Mark. Sound good? Cheers, Christine
