If I was doing that kind of work on a regular basis -- low light and moving

RE: Noise with K7

2010-06-24 Thread Bruce Dayton
Well short of going to a full frame camera, the K-x is the best you can get for
shooting at high ISO from any manufacturer.

I have shot about 15,000 frames with mine since getting it a couple of months
ago. The worst thing about the camera is how it makes you question the use and
price of your high end bodies (K20, K7). They have things about them that are
better, but when it comes to image quality, the K-x can't be beat.

What I did was to purchase one after looking at many images thinking I might
return it if it wasn't enough difference. I ended up keeping it. It is now
the camera I choose to use most of the time, leaving the poor K20 sitting there
all sad.

I routinely shoot the K-x in jpg. The processing engine is vastly improved and
the quality at high ISO is hard to beat, even in PP - Pentax really did this
body right. Mind you that I am a hardcore RAW shooter from way back

Re: Noise with K7

2010-06-24 Thread paul stenquist
Having a k7 and k20 generates the same result. I haven't touched the k20 in
close to a year. I'll be shooting with two cameras on a job coming up, so I'll
probably have to get out the manual to figure out where all the buttons are.
The k7 is quite different.

You're right about the low light capability of the Kx. However, if I was
shooting kids in low light for a living, I'd probably go with the full frame
Nikon. You'd want the benefits of a big buffer and high frame rate for that.
But if it was just a once in a while thing, the Kx would be more than adequate.

Peter is probably right. It was in my case. I needed a body to
shoot one gymnastics meet. The K-x was $500 - the D700 + 24-70/2.8
was WAY more. It couldn't be justified.

For Tanya, the question becomes what is her normal shooting? If this
type of thing becomes the bread and butter, then yes, she should dump
her Pentax stuff and switch to the Nikon D700 + stuff. If it is only
some of the time, the K-x might be good enough.

Certainly it would make sense to buy/borrow a K-x and try a shoot
before making a final decision - there is such a huge difference in
cost.

And thanks for your response, too, Paul. The K20D hadn't occurred to me. The
things you mention about it are appealing. Looks like a toss-up between the Kx
and K20d. If I can find one in good condition at a reasonable price it might
just be the K20D.

And my apologies to everyone for highjacking the thread. I should've changed

Yeah, the background haze is troublesome and the reason this version was not

Peso - another stab at fireflies

2010-06-24 Thread P N Stenquist
Another great firefly show last night, and I again tried to capture it
on pixels, perhaps with a bit more success. I've found that without
letting the background go almost black, I get nothing. Of course, it's
not much of a picture if you can't see some of the environment, so
black and midrange work in post is necessary.

I'm shooting from about 50 feet away with a 60mm focal length to
compress it all, while avoiding a need for critical focus. Note that
the fireflies which move faster while lit have long trails. I believe
it's also a function of how close to camera they are. I think that guy
at top right was only about 15 feet away.

Exposure was f 13, 30 seconds, ISO 320.

2010-06-24 Thread Jack Davis
Kudos for attempting such an elusive subject. Love the overall lighting.
Don't know what the ISO setting was, but I see a pretty noise free image for an
exposure of that length.
There are no such "lightning bugs" (that's what we called them years ago when
living in Iowa) in California. Certainly not that I'm aware off. We used to
catch them and smash them on our faces. Messy, but innocent summer evening
"fun."

I missed that the first time around. Life got busy and I got overwhelmed by
500+ messages in the queue.

I really like this. It is, perhaps, a bit dark, but very cool. If I lived
where there were fireflies, I'd be out trying that myself tonight.

I'd say that's about normal for a K20D. That's about where mine is at.
I'd be more suspicious of a camera that was barely used. I would think
it should go at least fifty or sixty thousand without a related failure.

Re: K20D

2010-06-24 Thread eckinator
Official shutter life spec of the K10D was 100,000. I believe the K20D
has the same shutter assembly. However, IIRC there was a thread here a
few weeks ago where two people stated that their respective K20Ds
started acting up around that count. Then again, the shutter life
database looks pretty positive:
http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/pentax_k20d.htm
Personally, I would look for signs of wear and abuse much more than
that and perhaps not pay as much as for one with 2,600 actuations on
it as seen on eBay a few weeks ago as well...

OT - G8/G20 silly season

2010-06-24 Thread Bruce Walker
As many will know (especially Torontonians) a G20 conference is
happening in the downtown core of Toronto this weekend. The whole place
is a maze of fine mesh fencing, gangs of police are patrolling the
ground, the airspace is restricted and filled with black helicopters.
One radio announcer likened it to Beirut circa 1983.

The police are armed with water cannons and brand new sound cannons
bought especially for this outing. Of course, they're all nervous,
pumped and just itching for the chance to take somebody out.

Into the middle of this comes Wingnut McWhackjob ...

"The grey-haired, bespectacled driver, 53, was hustled away by police
after they stopped his silver, four-door Hyundai driving westbound on
the Esplanade because it was topped with a homemade steel container.

The metal storage box was riveted together and balanced on some foam [...]

"Inside the car they found five blue and red fuel canisters, some only
partially full, a half-empty bottle of coke, a bundle of arrows with red
and yellow tips, as well as a large chainsaw, [a] homemade orange steel
crossbow and a baseball bat.

"Three medium-sized suitcases were found to be stuffed with batteries,
scribbled notebooks, and a copy of “100 ways to Make Money on the Internet.”

PESO - Lone Protester

2010-06-24 Thread frank theriault
I wasn't in the downtown core much today and when I was I didn't have
time to take photos. Didn't see much worth taking pix of anyway. In
fact, this lone protester was the only one I saw. Other than that,
lots of cops walking about in large groups, riding horsies and bikes -
you know, show of power and all...

Anyway, whatever this guy and his sign were about, the cop in the
background seems amusingly unconcerned:

http://knarfinthecity.blogspot.com/2010/06/lone-protester.html

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Tomorrow should be very slow as lots of businesses will be closed for
the day, and lots more protesters and cops should be around, so
hopefully lots of pix.

OT: so how do you tell Google their maps have a town in the wrong place?

2010-06-24 Thread Ann Sanfedele

So I have finally started to transcribe about 20 tapes from my auto trip
across the country in 2001 - started in October of that year...
And I'm enjoying coordinating my verbal notes with a map for the
most part, checking out the maps on line ...

I come to a place in the tape where I have just gotten on to route 224
from route 71 in Ohio somewhat west of Akron...
and I say "So I see a sign that says I'm one mile from Lodi... " I stop
the tape, go to google and type in Lodi Ohio... and
see that they put that little pin on the border of Ohio and West VA...

Iknow that can't be, because I would ahve been going east if that were
the case... not to mention I was farther north...
My print rand McNally has Lodi very close to where my notes tell me I
should be...

So I go to MAPQUEST and it shows two Lodi's ... one in the correct
spot and one in the "faux' spot that the google map showed.

yes, there is a "report a problem" link at the bottom of every map ;?>

what's odd is if i ask for "lodi, oh" the first time, it's wrong as you
noted, if i then try "route 224 & route 71, ohio" it gets the right
area, and a subsequent retry of "lodi, oh" gets it right

Google Maps has a lot of serious mistakes; you can have a lot of fun
googling "errors on google maps" ... supposedly it's going through a big
revamp over the next few months to clean it up ...

There appear to be two according to Mapquest, which finds BOTH of them and asks
you to choose which one.. Fascinating.

The "wrong" one is in Monroe County, but when you go there there really isn't a
city there.

Bing.com/maps finds only the "right one" (actually, the only one) in Medina
county.

maps.yahoo.com finds only the right location - and very quickly (surprising -
I'd forgotten that Yahoo! even DID mapping).

Google maps defaults to the wrong location without giving you a choice. BUT:
if you "find" Akron, OH first... scroll left so that you can actually SEE Lodi
(just a few miles W of 71 and 224) and THEN do a search for Lodi, OH it
correctly places its one search result smack dab in the middle of the town.

Very odd!

Anyways - to answer your question, on maps.google.com, there is a link in the
lower-right corner of the screen which is labeled REPORT A PROBLEM and I guess
that's what you want to do.

There appear to be two according to Mapquest, which finds BOTH of them and asks you to choose which one..

BUT: if you
"find" Akron, OH first... scroll left so that you can actually SEE Lodi (just a
few miles W of 71 and 224) and THEN do a search for Lodi, OH it correctly places its one
search result smack dab in the middle of the town.

Very odd!

Anyways - to answer your question, on maps.google.com, there is a link in the
lower-right corner of the screen which is labeled REPORT A PROBLEM and I guess
that's what you want to do.

I'm not a statistician, but I spend lots of professional time with statistics,
and there are two things to note about these data:

1. The numbers of subjects (cameras) are very small, especially for the K20D;

2. This is nothing approaching a random sample of cameras, and one can only
guess what the biases are;

3. Past 49,000 clicks on the K10D, the numbers are so small that the curves are
very "unstable"--which is to say that one failure (or survival) has a
disproportionate effect. The K20D numbers are so pathetic as to be completely

Into the middle of this comes Wingnut McWhackjob ...

I've got that lens! Used it far more for film than on my *istD - the
range just isn't that large for how big and heavy the lens is. I
guess real glass and metal do that to ya. Fast is nice and all, but
now that I can switch ISOs "on the fly" the price for such weight
isn't worth it. Still a worthwhile lens for low-light shooting where
a flash won't do.

But I digress...

Nice shot. Colours really stand out. That's a small ferry, isn't it?

So I have finally started to transcribe about 20 tapes from my auto
trip across the country in 2001 - started in October of that year...
And I'm enjoying coordinating my verbal notes with a map for the
most part, checking out the maps on line ...

I come to a place in the tape where I have just gotten on to route
224 from route 71 in Ohio somewhat west of Akron...
and I say "So I see a sign that says I'm one mile from Lodi... " I
stop the tape, go to google and type in Lodi Ohio... and

see that they put that little pin on the border of Ohio and West VA...
Iknow that can't be, because I would ahve been going east if that
were the case... not to mention I was farther north...
My print rand McNally has Lodi very close to where my notes tell me
I should be...

So I go to MAPQUEST and it shows two Lodi's ... one in the correct
spot and one in the "faux' spot that the google map showed.

seriously -- IS there a place you can go to and say hey guys, ya
got this wrong...?

Maybe not quite a million. But with over 12,000 lakes in the state, there's
bound to be name duplication.

I have reported an error to Google twice a year for three years
running, receiving a condescending thank you, "Someone will be getting
in touch with you soon if they have any questions".

It is still in error - no changes have been made. Because they have a
road segment missing, they route you on a long circuitous direction to
get to the entrance of a county park that is only 150 feet from the
"end" that they show. Look at the aerial (satellite) view and it is
totally obvious where the road goes, but their map view does not show
it. Sent them screen shots each time.

Total corporate BS.

Re: PESO: Ferry Emmalisa

2010-06-24 Thread Northeast Media

The Vivtar is big and heavy, but I do like the feel of it.

I do not normally carry it in my walking around bag, but I decided to just
for the pleasure of using the lens.

It is a bit slow to use, being manual focus, and as a screwmount I use stop
down metering (ask your dad about that term ). The result is the excesive
clutter in the background that Rick pointed out. I still like the image
despite its imperfections.

It is a small ferry, we do have smaller ones, and much bigger ones as well.
