It can be hard to keep up with the PDML. How is one supposed to check each of
umpteen photo blogs every day to see if they've been updated?

Ecke has some great shots up that have never been PESOs. Under normal
circumstances I would have missed them completely.

How does one share comments with others, let alone have a discussion?

I think Godfrey has done it well, by posting photoblog entries as PESOs. I
hope others do the same.

I wondered the same thing as Rick.

Your reply has left me feeling like Mel Smith in the 'Not The Nine O'Clock
News' sketch, where his character goes into to a shop to buy a gramophone.
I'm frightened to look this up on Google, in case it cross references this
with more terms I've never heard of. With the certain exception of cameras,
most of the stuff you heaved out twenty years ago is modern technology to

Subject: pdml exhibit update

Hi Everyone:

I've received a few emails off list asking about the exhibit status. I
talked to Sue late last week and learned that she's been sick with a
cold/cough/high fever--a few friends and colleagues have had the same
thing--bit of a bug going around here. Prior to that I think she was on
vacation with her family.

Anyway, she said she would be taking the exhibit down soon and that she
would be contacting everyone. She said, "I'm way behind on email." All
the photographs are safe in the gallery, and Sue should be contacting
folks any day now.

I should have posted sooner about this, but I've been busy making a mess
of a photo project I'm working on. Anyway . . . that story is for another
time.

Cheers, Christine

Two journalists, one a stills photographer, have received compensation

I wasn't there, but in similar situations I tend film from a few feet

Subject: FYI: Adobe LR3 slideshow and Youtube

Hi All,

I played with the slideshow in LR3.
I encountered a problem that once the exported video is uploaded to Youtube,
the transitions (no matter how long they are, even if they are 0 seconds)
become bad: they become jerky, artifacts appear (colored rectangles), under
certain conditions the photos would be switching back in force several
times.
With all of that it was shown by VLC and QuickTime player just fine.

I found one workaround.
I saved it as 720p, then used VLC (the latest 1.0 version) to convert/save
it into the same mp4 format.
After that, the video was exhibiting problems in QuickTime player, but was
fine on Youtube.
The same done with 1080p was not as successful.

I thought I'd share this recipe, in case it would be useful to someone.

While this is less important, if you are curious, you can see what came out
of that excercise:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lJcGkg_Rgg
(If your connection allows, choose 720p, and see it "full screen")

PESO -- "Madison First congregational Church Steeple"

2010-06-29 Thread P. J. Alling
This was really a test shot to see if my A*300 was now up to snuff,
unfortunately it wasn't. The M*300 I tested against was however.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20%20madcongchrstep.html

Equipment: Pentax K20D w/smc Pentax M*300mm f4.0.

Notes: The A and M * 300mm f4.0 lenses are a bit soft wide open, but the
files sharpen up nicely, when they work. The A* is going back for more
work.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

i could (relatively) easily roll out a simple Drupal site that

i thought maybe if i built a folder of PDML-related feeds (some not from

nice public page:

however it doesn't seem to sort by latest published; maybe its better
when this page in turn is subscribed to by RSS (which i can't seem do,
perhaps because my reader is in turn synced to Google Reader)

I subscribed to it in Google Reader and it looked like it was sorted
by photographer, not date.

I've tried a quick test using Yahoo Pipes, which seems like a good
tool for this. It has 3 RSS sources for testing: My own Flickr
photostream, and the photoblogs of John Celio and Mr. Eckinator. The
three sources are combined with a "union" operator, sorted by
publication date, and sent to the output.

The pipe overview page is:

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=a2521ccc1cd0ae6146b25b4cbbe1244d

The associated RSS feed is:

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=a2521ccc1cd0ae6146b25b4cbbe1244d&_render=rss

For some reason, Google Reader is throwing an error when I try to
subscribe to the RSS feed. IE's RSS previewer looks OK. Not sure
what's going on.

Re: PESO & cropping advice sought - Kuantan Mosque detail

If you're going to crop at all, the "gentle" version is my preference. I
actually prefer the original uncropped image. Only thing I might do would be
very slight crop to narrow the space between the tower on the left and the left
edge. This would be to balance with the right edge. Also, I don't like
splitting edge features if it can be avoided.

Come to think of it this idea of having one PDML blog hub is even more
brilliant since you wouldn't have to be a member of all kinds of sites
and networks any more. I am not good at maintaining all of these
networks, I have a dead LinkedIn profile, a dead Xing profile, a dead
MySpace account, a facebook account used only to add people and find
them on the net if needed, a posterous because I like the absolute
ease of posting, four web domains I am not using, Picasa web albums
that are not open to the public, a fotocommunity premium membership
coupon that will probably expire some time soon and so on and so
forth... having all of this combined somewhere, somewho would probably
mean a huge relief to more than just yours truly...

Re: Noise with K7

2010-06-29 Thread 272yb
Well I am glad that my NOISE post is still alive. It is bad that Pentax did not
make a better sensor for the K7. If they could do it in the KX, why not the K7.
I guess the money issue (make more money with the K7 first and then bring out
the KX and by this time most people have already bought the K7 and so now they
will buy the KX.
I have been reading the posts about the noise with the K7, with my K7 even at
100 iso, the noise is bad. Like I stated before that some of my photos were not
used because of the noise. I have been fooling with Neat Image Pro and the
noise filter in Photoshop and also the noise filter by Topaz. Topaz takes the
longest to filter the noise.. My results have been pretty good but like someone
else on the list said this is just an extra step.
About buying Nikon gear, I do have a couple bodies but they are not new. The
D1x is a very good body with very nice color and low noise. Also this body will
sync at up to 500th of a second with any flash.
I guess if I did not have so much money in Pentax glass, I would switch maybe.
I have shot with Pentax gear since about 1975. I have used the Pentax gear to
photograph US Presidents, major league sports, NHRA and IHRA Drag racing. News
events, Spot news and just about anything a photojournalist would shoot. Even
when I worked for the newspaper, I used my Pentax gear instead of the company
Nikon gear. I had better glass. When newspapers were switching to digital,
first we had the big Kodak DCS/Nikon bodies. Since Pentax never released the
first digital body that they showed at the camera shows, I was forced to use
the Kodak DCS/Nikon bodies, Next we went to the Nikon D1 bodies which was 2.7
Megs. It would shoot five frames per second and would sync at up to 500th. of a
second, but color was always a killer, meant more time on the computer. At that
time I bought some nikon gear and glass. But I still shot with my Pentax film

So in ending my longest post on the list, I do hope Pentax will bring out a
nice killer body with very very good low light.

She said she's shooting interiors, no mention of kids. If she's shooting kids
in dimly lit interiors, she needs lights. No need to compromise in either case.

Rick, the whole idea of an RSS reader is to collect all the blogs (and
other frequently-updated sites) you read into one central location. I
follow dozens of blogs, photoblogs, webcomics and other sites with RSS
feeds, and whenever they post something new it shows up in my Google
Reader (http://www.google.com/reader). Most of each new post's content
shows up in my reader, too, but some blogs choose to have you click a
link to their actual site to see the new post. Either way, I know
there's something new on all my favorite sites shortly after it's been
posted.

I don't post PESOs very often because I pretty much lurk here all the
time. It doesn't seem fair to ask people for comments on my photos when
I almost never comment on anyone else's. I thought this would be an
easy way to help people like me let others know that we do frequently
post photos, just not here so much. I'm looking forward to adding all
the blogs people have posted and seeing what they share with the world.

I went back to my email and downloaded the tiny thumbnail original shot image.
Upon enlarging it, sure enough, among the artifacts, I saw what could be a car
roof line along with some other dark shapes. Couldn't make them out in the
original.
Sure, crop off whatever you don't like.
A reasonable image size would have helped greatly, Ecke. :)

Re: Any chance of selling to a car mag?

2010-06-29 Thread 272yb
Larry, Paul is correct in what he says. You will also need a tech sheet filled
out by the owner and have him or her sign it, which also give the magazine
permission to publish the photos. Also know as an release/tech form. I have if
you need it. Magazines like Car craft, Hot Rod will have their own forms for
you to use.
On my page there are two car features of mine, the links being:

http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=753552

http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=772282

These are the only two that I have online, but I do have a lot of others that I
did not get around to putting up. Joe

Talk to the magazines first. Go to a bookstore and find some specialty mags
that feature similar cars and query the editors. Show them the pics you took
previously. You'll have a much better chance of selling the pics if you can
write an article as well.

You'll want to shoot the cars in an open area in either very early morning or
very late evening light. The backgrounds should be clean. Trees are okay, but
its best if they are far enough from the cars that they'll be out of focus.
Architectural backgrounds are okay, but you have to know how to work with them.
Shooting the cars in the guys shop is almost certainly a no-sell. Check out the
kind of photography the magazines you're querying feature.

This is something currently on my mind. I wrote this reply about ten
times and deleted it again. In a nutshell I would love for the
etiquette of this list to make room for more critical comments, I
rarely see anyone saying an image doesn't work but I do see an
enormous difference in the number of positive responses per image so
the going rule seems to be "nihil nisi bene" for most people and I
tend to do the same thing because of not wanting to step on any

mostly underwhelmed by them so it would help me a lot to know why...

Pentax used a brand new sensor for the K-x, which Sony introduced
later (the A500 is the only other camera using the new 12MP part, it
was announced 3 weeks before the K-x but shipped 2 months afterwards).
The K-7 was announced 5 months earlier than the K-x when the two new
Sony sensors were not yet available and there's good reason to believe
the K-7's launch had been pushed back from PMA, some 8 months before
the K-x showed up. Nikon's D5000, released midway between the K-7 and
K-x even uses the older version of the K-x sensor and Nikon most
likely had first dibs on the part. Pentax could have used the older
Sony 12MP sensor that the K-x sensor was derived from, but then the
K-7's noise performance would have been about a stop worse than the
K-x anyways and it would have been a spec downgrade from the K20D.

Thank you.

Trying to keep up with mailing lists, blogs, online magazines, etc,
for both personal and professional purposes, has become a large task
and a time sink. I find for myself that if I don't limit my
email/list/forum/etc interactions somewhat, I don't have time to get
any work done.

The tactic I've taken is to subscribe to a small number of blogs via
RSS feeds. If a blog does not have an RSS feed, I'll likely follow it
very little. I skim the RSS feeds on a daily basis and pick/choose
what I can afford the time to get involved with.

I can't track all the messages on the PDML by a long shot ... !

Yes, learning can surely occur in these situations, with some caveats
(lots of open minds, civility by all parties, ...). Unfortunately, I've
seen it devolve into nastiness and ruin friendships and such far too
often. Not to mention that it's the way I was raised, "praise in

MARK!!!

As to the image, I wish I could see farther over to the right, to me
it is kind of like the image is well, like incomplete there. Either
that or I would take some away from the right and see if the vertical
crop needed any change then. The lack of foreground in the right half
along with the visible lineage gives the harbour bassin something uhm,
boxy in my eyes... I think the location has enormous potential though
and I want to see what comes out if you repeat the shot...

PESO Misty Morning

2010-06-29 Thread eckinator
Going through the photos from my 2005 trip to Malaysia, this is one of
my faves. A misty morning on the East bank of Lemanak River, Sarawak,
Borneo, Malaysia as seen from the Batang Ai Iban longhouse where we
spent the night drinking positively excellent Iban moonshine with zero
hangover factor and boy, was I ever loaded. I still feel a bit bad for
having gone there and watch them put on a show for "rich" Westerners
but it was an amazing insight nonetheless so I'm glad I didn't have
those qualms before leaving or I might not have booked that
arrangement. The trip was three weeks with the first week guided and
the other two spent backpacking and I hope to go to Malaysia again
some day, it is a beautiful country, the people are friendly and very
very hospitable and the food is awesome, you can eat all kinds of
super spicy hot food but you will always still taste something and not
just feel your mouth burn. And their breakfast, Nasi Lemak, is a great
start into a day in the weather there. Some days I drank as much as 9
liters before needing to heed nature's call. It is all one huge
sweatbox to me.

Yep. That was open enough ;-)
Thank you Ecke :-)

From this view point there was nothing more to see at the right, just
more breakwater structure and water. That's why I decided to stop
there. But you makes valid points.

Panorama is totally new to me. Taking in a whole scene really
challenges my composing skills. Forcing me to pre visualise more.
Hopefully my general photography will improve from it.

I'm going back this weekend, and will have your and others comments in
the back of my head. If I'm lucky, the light will be more interesting.
Maybe, maybe I will come up with a better solution???

It's all in how it's done.

Incorrect:

"That photo is a steaming dungheap so foul that even flies avoid it."

Correct:

"That is an interesting subject, but the photo would be better if you included
the subject's head, had him in focus, and reduced the exposure by 2 stops or
so."

I appreciate appreciative comments on my PESOs, but would welcome a lot more
public polite constructive criticism.

rarely see anyone saying an image doesn't work but I do see an

the going rule seems to be "nihil nisi bene" for most people and I

Hi Ecke,

This is something currently on my mind. I wrote this reply about ten
times and deleted it again. In a nutshell I would love for the
etiquette of this list to make room for more critical comments, I
rarely see anyone saying an image doesn't work but I do see an
enormous difference in the number of positive responses per image so
the going rule seems to be "nihil nisi bene" for most people and I
tend to do the same thing because of not wanting to step on any
toes... By the number of responses to my recent PESOs people were
mostly underwhelmed by them so it would help me a lot to know why...
My €0.02
It did happen at one time, again back in the days when Shel B used
to post regularly. There were one or two 'heated discussions' and
the more critical comments slowly subsided.

You imagined about right although it was low F-hundreds at times.
Borneo and KL especially. Non-Borneo's East coast was nice with always
a gentle fresh breeze, places visited were among others Cherating,
Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu and the Pulau Perhentian islands. I'd go
there again any day while I can still stand the weather.

Definitely good. As others, I can "feel" the heat and humidity.

Re: Noise with K7

2010-06-29 Thread Joseph McAllister
I started to write a long diatribe here about the sensors,
electronics, firmware, etc. But it all pointed towards one thing.

You get what you pay for, when you pay for it.

If you pay the big bucks, you get the better gear.

If you wait, better cameras will come online over time.

It's interesting reading the heritage of the various cameras and their
parts. It's rare that any of that knowledge will counteract the above
sentences at any given time.

Well I am glad that my NOISE post is still alive. It is bad that
Pentax did not make a better sensor for the K7. If they could do it
in the KX, why not the K7. I guess the money issue (make more money
with the K7 first and then bring out the KX and by this time most
people have already bought the K7 and so now they will buy the KX.

Pentax doesn't make sensors, yet. They buy off the shelf. Perhaps, but
unlikely, they will put up the money to get exclusive rights to a
super sensor a few months before anyone else. They most likely have
several physical camera bodies ready to go, at least in prototype, and
choose the sensor prior to the start of limited pre-production on the
one they are price pointing. They probably pay to have the latest
generic processing software customized and placed in firmware, unless
it comes from the sensor manufacturer, as they are tied together so
closely. Most of the parts to any of their cameras are made, even
designed, elsewhere.

Pentax is an optical company. They know how to make good cameras, and
many other optically based instruments. They have great engineers and
designers that are the source of their exclusive features. It's
possible, but I don't think, that they have crews of software
engineers and sensor engineers on their staff.
