Steven, I am thinking of the following /almost/ real life situations:

1. Somebody talking to Picasso - Maestro, your brushes have most
wonderful strokes in them.

2. Someone talking to Ferdinand Porsche - Sir, the steering wheel of
your cars is so round, I cannot help but drive faster.

3. Someone talking to (well choose whatever haut couture grand master
you wish) - Your needles make so wonderfully beautiful clothes...

I hope you catch my drift, Steve.

Equipment, IMO (not so humble) does matter only if the one who uses it
knows exactly what they are doing. I cannot draw like Picasso or drive
like well known Stig or even cook like chief Ramsey no matter what
canvas or race track or kitchen you would put in front of me. Now, it
will take great deal of self-understanding and self-honesty to realize
and admit that there is a limit to the gear one is going to use to one's
benefit whereas above that limit it won't be for the quality of the
outcome, but for other reasons - that of collectible factor, that of
social status, that of pleasure of using (buttery smooth focusing ring
epithets come to mind), etc.

Re: Pentax/CRIS Customer Service

Congratulations. Now you are back in the saddle, which is the best thing!

I documented my stupid actions which resulted in damage to my K-5 here:
http://forums.dpreview.com/...forums/read.asp?forum=1036message=37414995

I sent the camera to Pentax-CRIS for repair and have been following the repair
status on their website. Their estimate of $250 to make things right made me
cringe!

Today I got a phone call out of the blue from Pentax-CRIS advising that upon
inspection of the camera, they found sensor stains, and will send me a new
replacement camera at no charge! (I asked them to do that pesky focusing screen
replacement for me on the new body, so I will have that cost to bear, but what
a great outcome for me!)
Interestingly, I had tested my K-5 shortly after the sensor stain issue blew up
and did not find any evidence of that problem. Evidently they can do a more
thorough inspection job in their shop than we can do in the field.

Don't let anyone convince you that Pentax USA doesn't support their customers.
I've made several lens and camera service work requests of them over the last
10 years, and they have (almost) always come through for me. I'm sure that some
of you (are you reading this, Joe Tainter?) have not had the same good results
as I have, but I can only report based on my own experience.

More on enlargers... I get my Durst M600 today but I may have found
something interesting as well:
A Kaiser 7002 (color model). Goes up to 6x7.

Does anyone have experience about Kaiser enlargers? Seems they are
still in business which is good for support.
Those though look like plastic made (like low end Durst).
Otherwise it seems to be good stuff (looking at the manual).

I did my first test recording Saturday, an album from an older

Followed the manual step by step and its a pretty painless process.
Quality is very good, not great but very good. I'm happy with what it
can do and will start recording my older, most likely never to be
released on CD albums.

Looking for app to help me log f-stop, shutter when taking film photos?

Hi all,

I am starting to take some film photos w my aunt's old sp1000 and I thought it
would be a good time to be a little diligent about noting down the
ap/shutter/iso for each photo.
This will help me figure out if my camera is metering correctly (and also help
me figure out how to reproduce a good shot if I ever make one by accident
(somewhat joking here)).

So: does anyone know of an app for the iPhone that does this? I've been
looking, but my google-Fu is weak.

thanks,

Re: What gear is on your short list?

2011-01-30 Thread Steven Desjardins
I'm clearly not saying this well. I keep saying the equivalent of A
good photographer can take advantage of better equipment and folks
keep translating it to good equipment will make you a better
photographer. To be clear, I think the former statement is obvious,
I think the latter is usually wrong, and there is a clear difference
between the the two. If a good photographer can take advantage of
better equipment, then equipment clearly matters because they will
take the trouble to buy it. To use the car example, this is like
saying, you are a fine race car driver so you should be able to set a
track record in a Ford Fiesta instead of a an F1 racer. Or going
into the kitchen of Chef Antoine and telling him he is a fool for
buying the best cookware when a chef of his caliber clearly doesn't
need it.

Every photographer is stuck with the skills they have at that moment.
The skills I might acquire in the future through practice are not
available to me today. Therefore, for each photographer, the major
remaining variable is quality of the equipment. A really good
photographer can get good pictures with inferior equipment. Chances
are he/she would do even better with better equipment.

I admit folks, I fail to see why this idea is so controversial. The
best photographers often buy the best equipment. Maybe they can
overcome inferior equipment, but I simply point out that very few of
them bother to take this route.

 situation than lousy equipment.

Steven, I am thinking of the following /almost/ real life situations:

 1. Somebody talking to Picasso - Maestro, your brushes have most wonderful
 strokes in them.

 2. Someone talking to Ferdinand Porsche - Sir, the steering wheel of your
cars is so round, I cannot help but drive faster.

 3. Someone talking to (well choose whatever haut couture grand master you
wish) - Your needles make so wonderfully beautiful clothes...

I hope you catch my drift, Steve.

Equipment, IMO (not so humble) does matter only if the one who uses it knows
exactly what they are doing. I cannot draw like Picasso or drive like well
known Stig or even cook like chief Ramsey no matter what canvas or race
track or kitchen you would put in front of me. Now, it will take great deal
of self-understanding and self-honesty to realize and admit that there is a
limit to the gear one is going to use to one's benefit whereas above that
limit it won't be for the quality of the outcome, but for other reasons -
that of collectible factor, that of social status, that of pleasure of using
(buttery smooth focusing ring epithets come to mind), etc.

Hmmm. Probably some facet of language barrier is in play here, because

advocating the the equipment is better be better than one is a
photographer idea... But I digress.

Oh, right, the best photographers. True as you put it. It is just that
it is rather natural to see how this rationale projects on to
Boris-the-average-photog. The controversy is probably related to (if not
based on) the fact that in modern times one is kind of supposed to be on
top of things. It is (trying to make a car analogy here) if you came to
the meet up of the gear heads with VW Golf Mk3 VR6. No matter how good
is the state of the car, you would be looked down up on merely because
it is not modern VW Scirocco or VW is offering now in VR6's stead... And
even if you drove and outdriven all the others with your car (because
you know it intimately, etc), they would still think of you in a rather
special manner. This is the impression I am getting from reading the
forums and other non-PDML sources. Cases to illustrate my points are
most recent lenses introduced by Pentax (35/2.4 and 18-135).

Looking for app to help me log f-stop, shutter when taking, film photos?

Hi all,

I am starting to take some film photos w my aunt's old sp1000 and I
thought it would be a good time to be a little diligent about noting
down the ap/shutter/iso for each photo. This will help me figure out
if my camera is metering correctly (and also help me figure out how
to reproduce a good shot if I ever make one by accident (somewhat
joking here)).

So: does anyone know of an app for the iPhone that does this? I've

Seems like if you really wanted to get in the spirit of the thing, you'd
just carry a little pocket notebook and a pen and write them down.
Probably less of a distraction from photography than fiddling with the
iPhone.

Re: What gear is on your short list?

2011-01-30 Thread Steven Desjardins
Actually, I think this has been in general rather even-tempered
discussion. ;-) You, Boris, are always courteous.

I don't think I'm switching positions. The argument is based on a
comparison of two situations. These two situations are a single
photographer of varying skills with each of two sets of equipment, one
set being noticeably higher quality than the other.. I am trying to
show that quality of equipment does matter in most situations. This
means that the same photographer will, on the average, do better with
the higher quality equipment. The language issue may be that the
comparison does not imply absolute quality. An absolute duffer may
not be helped by anything. A novice with some natural ability may do
better with a camera with better exposure and AF. (I suspect that the
better the photographer the more difference the equipment will make
(at least up to a certain point), but this is ancillary to my main
point.) In other words, I'm not saying that good equipment will
produce good work, I'm simply saying it will produce better work on
the average.

This is definitely putting me in the mood to write my test. ;-)

Re: What gear is on your short list?

2011-01-30 Thread Steven Desjardins
BTW, since we are discussing equipment, I just bought my wife a new
camera. Her old PS had seen hard use and the trip to Africa hadn't
helped. I took advantage of the $100 price tag on the Optio I-10.
She takes pictures primarily of people in good light (or uses the
flash), so the noise issues with the Optio shouldn't matter too much.
It came in Friday, although since I had sent it to my office I didn't
see it until today. Damn, this thing is tiny. Smaller than my cell
phone. I have not idea how good it is yet but it certainly would be
no burden in the pocket. I didn't like the Altoids Optios since I
just couldn't seem to hold them steady. I wonder if SR helps with
that problem here. BTW, It doesn't quite fit in the Altoids tin.

I selected this one because they have an in-house chip shop.

Actually, the night shots look a lot better on screen. These industrial
night scenes are awfully difficult to print, they always look much
flatter on paper and they're not really at their best in a place with
rather dim lighting.

Has anyone here ever printed digital photos as transparencies for

No problem David. I enjoy a little humor.

After the joke has been made, tho, it gets a little stale. So you
other jokesters, who were neither original nor helpful, I curse you to
an eternity of PDML threads in which Kenny Boy is highly praised, you
are taunted by rumors of pentax full frame cameras which never come to
fruition, and Larry constantly invokes naked images of himself. And
may your only photographic subject be a cormorant.

To Cotty, thanks for the pointer. That app is exactly what I was

GESO and VESO - basketball

2011-01-30 Thread George Sinos
A friend's daughter plays college basketball. Her team was in town to
play a local team, so I had a chance to shoot a game from the floor.

I haven't shot a basketball game since I was in high school. Cameras
have changed a lot since then, and it seems like the game moves a lot
faster. (Maybe I'm just moving slower.)

School gyms are dark, but this one seemed darker than average. The
whole game was shot at an ISO higher than I would have liked and a
shutter speed that was slower than I would have liked. Even so, the
shots were slightly underexposed and had more than a bit of noise.
ACR and Photoshop helped a bit.

Anyway, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. Here are a few shots
from the game.

Let me spin this another way: The limiting factor in the quality of
the pictures I take is not the quality of the camera I take them with.

However, quite likely some combination of longer lenses and faster
lenses/senses would allow me to take some pictures that at the moment
I just can't take.

Of course you could always leave yourself a voice mail message.

If you stick with using film, you might put an MX-S in your
long-term plans; it imprints that information on the film
(either between the sprocket holes, or on the 37th frame).

Use the iPhone's camera to take a quick snap of the SLR's aperture

Yes it does. That's an option. Of course, with DSLRs you can often
record the voice memo directly onto the exposed frame - I could do this

the info onto a notelet and photograph it on an adjacent frame to the

Big thanks Everyone! Generous comments are much appreciated.

The off-camera frame was a tad dark around the eyes--a bit drab, so I did a
light tweak to brighten them up a bit. This tweak was a bit to bright
because it effected the nice modeling highlight of the nose on the
original version, but I found an acceptable happy medium. I'm disappointed
about the lower and upper left corners; wish it didn't have the white of
the background and I would have liked the coat near his lip to be just a tad
lower, but what are you going to do. :-)

What is amazing about the shot is the shutter speed: 1/6 of a sec @ f 6.3
ISO 400. Gotta love shake-reduction--and big time respect for the FA 50mm f
1.4--what a powerhouse for the money.

Re: Looking for app to help me log f-stop, shutter when taking film photos?

2011-01-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Look for a 'list manager' app. There are at least a dozen available.
While a dedicated app might implement all of this for you, why bother
with that? Any simple flat database or list app can be set up to do it
so trivially it's not worth worrying about.

Design a list that will allow you to create new entries with a
timestamp includes fields to enter ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed from a
popup list and free-text notes.

That way your in-field experience is
- Snap photo
- click new entry
- enter aperture, iso, shutter time ... add a note if desirable.

If the list can remember the last settings for an entry when it
creates a new entry, so much the better.

In the absence of even a list manager, just use the default notepad
app. Create the list with tabs between the fields and a return at the
end of each entry. Synchronize that back to the computer and insert it
into a spreadsheet ... done.

Re: What gear is on your short list?

2011-01-30 Thread Paul Stenquist
Better equipment quite obvkously wouldn't make much difference here. The shot
is in full sun and presents no huge equipment challenges. However, if taken
with an inferior lens that lacked sharpness it wouldn't be as nice as it is.
And it is quite nice. And of course if it were to be used on a billboard,
taking it with a medium format camera would probably yield a better result for
that purpose.

However, the point some have been trying to make is that there are situations
that can tax one's equipment. For example, I was unable to achieve decent
results in the very dim lighting of the pool hall with either the K20 or the
K7. In fact, the K20 wouldn't even lock focus in that light, and the ISO 6400
pics from both cameras were quite noisy. The K-5, being better suited to
lo-light photography in terms of both noise and autofocus, allowed me to take
better photos.

I find this a silly discussion. Of course, better equipment won't always help
one take better photos. But there are times when it will. What could possibly
be more obvious?

RE: Looking for app to help me log f-stop, shutter when taking film photos?

2011-01-30 Thread Bob W
Doesn't the iPhone have a simple voice memo app?

Yes it does. That's an option. Of course, with DSLRs you can often
record the voice memo directly onto the exposed frame - I could do this
with the 1DmII. With, film the correct procedure would be to jot down
the info onto a notelet and photograph it on an adjacent frame to the
actual frame of the scene ;)

the problem there is that you then have to write down the 2nd exposure
details and photograph them; then write done those details and, well, you
can probably see where this is going.

To be honest, I've never understand why people write this information down
after the event, and especially why they publish this information with their
pictures. I can't see how anyone else can benefit - I've never looked at a
photograph and wondered what aperture and shutter speed was used, and I've
no idea what to do with the information when people provide it.

The only value that I know of in having this information is when I write it
down before I take the photograph, as part of a trial or test plan. For
example, I want to understand a bit more about the Voigtlander 75mm lens I
bought a couple of months ago, so I have planned a series of shots, and
noted down the apertures I want to use to test different things. I'll use
these as my script, noting alongside them what I want to know, and later
when the shots are done make notes of what actually happened. This has value
to me, whereas wandering around doing general photography, then noting the
technicals never has.

And, while we're on the subject, looking for an app that does it strikes me
as a classic example of techno overkill.
