I tried to grep the urls for all the scavenger hunt photos into one file. It turns out that my new mail server isn't as user friendly as my old one when it comes to searching through email, so the list isn't as clean as I'd like. I'm inclined to suggest that in the future, we just set up a free flickr account where everyone can just post them in one place. Is this just a strain of bad luck or is Pentax' quality really going down the drain? Or is an average economic lifetime of a mere 4 1/2 years for a DSLR a normal thing nowadays? Ralf Ralf, without going into your financial situation I should point out that 4+ years for a DSLR is a lot. I cannot possibly know how much Michael is shooting with his K10D, but I think that half the declared guaranteed number of shutter actuations is not bad at all on my book. My K10D has 23,000+ clicks and doing as good as it was when I bought it back in 2006. I hope it will do as many clicks more before it finally expires. Although falling under same mechanical category for most part, these are new features. * I don't know what kind of complexity, especially with regard to manufacturing mechanical tolerances, is introduced by 100% viewfinder. * Pentax like everyone is still about reducing manufacturing costs... I do not extend the leg, it is just there for mass to overcome the tendency for the camera to be moved. It seems to help me be more steady but does get some strange looks from other photographers. I don't know if anyone has ever used this technique before but I have used it this way many times. I've tried that, but the combination of weights tires one quickly. The lightest anti-shake trick I've used was something I read long ago in some photo magazine. Buy yourself a 1/4 20 eye bolt, the shortest thread length you can find (not important, just neater) and tie eight feet of most any kind of heavyweight string to the bolt. Put the string in your pocket Mount that bolt on your camera's tripod socket. When you are ready to shoot something that needs that steadying, pull the string out of your pocket and drop it on the ground. Hold the camera a bit lower of where you usually do. Step on the string, raise the camera so there is some, but not much, tension on the string, and shoot! That little bit of tug can overcome at least some of the photographer's unsteadiness. And it weighs nothing. There are a couple in my bag all the time. Some years ago I bought a coffee pot by eva solo (http://www.evasolo.com/productinfo/567590/), its life was short in a house with kids and a cat but the metal/rubber parts survived the fall so I have been using those with a bottle of plum wine wrapped in a towel ever since. Those break too but are easy (and pleasant) to replace. Usually I have been washing off all the labels but haven't done it this time. reviewing pictures on PPG
I think that the first I heard of PPG was on the DPR Pentax SLR forum with people either bemoaning photos that had been rejected, or celebrating photos that had been accepted. The consensus seemed to be that voting on PPG was done by simpletons with a strong preference for cliche, and vivid colors. Or something like that. I was finally able to submit some more photos, after which I decided to do some voting. If the voting on PPG is done by simpletons who love cliche, then it's because they are the only people whose brains wouldn't turn to soggy gruel by looking at the entries. In half an hour I looked at more flower pictures on PPG than I have in two years of reading PDML. And if it's not a flower, dear God, it's a building. A large, majestic building, perfectly centered in the frame, or a wide angle view of a magnificent interior, replete with a baroque domed ceiling. Almost every one of those pictures is technically perfect, taken with few flaws and less imagination. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Because I think that taking sharpness out of a photo is something that could be done trivially easily in digital post processing. But, the 85 Soft does not diminish the sharpness of the photo. It merely provides varying degrees of 'fog' around the sharp image. All of my digital signal processing classes were nearly 30 years ago, so I don't have the mathematical chops to do it today, but that's still just a simple 2-d transform, possibly using a high pass filter for edge detection. Two points about that. The lens does a 3D transform. By the time you get the image, the sensor has removed the directional information and all you get to work with is a 2D plane with colour and luminance information. All spatial info is lost. If *all* the information available from the light was recorded by the sensor, you could do away with the lens entirely. You could simply expose the sensor through the empty lens mount and recreate the scene later with digital signal processing. (I read of some recent research work to do just that.) So there's stuff going on in glass-space that you simply cannot replicate in post-processing. But the second point is that you can do a pretty good PP fake of this soft lens effect. The Orton effect isn't identical, but looks quite similar. -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: reviewing pictures on PPG
I remember voting over images that looked very much like a bulk upload of holiday snaps. That was before the weekly limit was introduced. However I still find that the type of pictures submitted has a distinct seasonal flavour. Tuned to the Northern hemisphere, for most part. So right now it's spring flowers. In a month it'll be birds. In September it's travel shots, and in October there are autumn colours to thirteen by the dozen. It could be a subission strategy, I suppose, to stay a bit ahead of the game by submitting seasonal pictures from last year just before the season starts. Re: Damned customs - F 85 Soft
Bruce Walker wrote: Two points about that. I think the 85 Soft is one of those lenses deliberately designed with a lot of spherical aberration, which does strike me as something that would be very difficult to recreate in software. But there's a tradeoff; there are only so many bits of information you can capture on any sensor. If you are using some of them to be able to recreate images in post processing, you have to give up something in exchange. You can recreate some of the 'lost' information (much as is done nowadays with Bayer sensor arrays), but not all of it. And you're still limited to what comes in through the front element. So while you can get some amount of distance and 3-D information to allow a shift of viewpoint by seeing what is different from one side of the lens to the other, you obviously can't record information on anything that is totally obscured by something between it and the camera. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: reviewing pictures on PPG
wow - I disagree about the voting process... There are a lot of competent things that are boring, but enough spectacularly good stuff to make it interesting. I have to say that I've been brutal though, when it came to photos submitted by anyone who needed to expound on the beauty of their own work. gag me with a spoon - or gushing over the lenses. Every now and then there is really outstanding stuff and I only regret that I don't know whose work it is - unless, by chance, I recognize the work as that of someone I know and have already admired. They ask us to note categories when we submit, but I've yet to find a way from the main page to search by category or subject - and I'd like to. I share Bob's frustration at the way the site is set up... I've just noted yesterday that I now have 10 accepted... two of which (sorry Larry) are flowers ;-) ann Larry Colen wrote: I think that the first I heard of PPG was on the DPR Pentax SLR forum with people either bemoaning photos that had been rejected, or celebrating photos that had been accepted.

Used to be, my eyes saw the world that way.
