Re: Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm, anyone?

2011-06-11 Thread Tim Bray
The 50-135 is a brilliant lens but it's awfully big & heavy. I don't
take it along on biz trips for that reason. But for serious tourism
where I expect to encounter extreme beauty, sure.

Of my lenses, the 21mm is the one absolute must-have. The 21mm and
40mm are a good & very compact pair. Recently I've been taking the
100mm macro because it's quite a bit lighter than the 50-135;
particularly if I expect to do any portraiture. -T

Nothing can really replace good old Russian Mat. I am pretty bad in
swearing in either Hebrew or English, but Russian is naturally entirely
different story.

Yeah, but if the person you swearing at doesn't understand what you're
saying, what use is it?

If someone is swearing at you - you don't really need to know the
language, do you? If someone is swearing with you - you may have a
point, although I am under impression that certain expletives (from many
languages, not just Russian) are becoming international.

Hello all,

Curious if anyone has tried or been tempted by this one?

I'll be traveling to Barcelona in a couple of weeks, and am experiencing a
pre-trip
enablement crisis of sorts. Last summer, I packed light for our summer
vacation, with
only one 17-70 lens, and I kind of regretted it. So, this summer, my original
plan was to
bring along my k-7, the sigma 17-70 lens, the pentax 50-135, and 50/1.4.
But, I wonder how much patience I'll have for lens-swapping & lens-schlepping
on the
family vaca, and maybe the 18-135 (for day), plus the 50/1.4 (evening wear) is
a better
solution. Then again, why own the lovely 50-135, and not bring it? OTOH, I
bet the
18-135 is a fine substitute for the sigma, though not as fast by a stop.

My dilemma gets down to the question of the "travel" lens... assuming you are
not on photo
safari, does it make sense to have a super-zoom for travel, and leave the
super-nice lens
at home? Security, packing light, ease of use all factor in... but, also image
quality...
what say you?

I am also experiencing a pre-trip wardrobe crisis, but I think I'll have to
seek help on
another list for that one.

:)
Thanks,
-c

RE: OT: Cycling in New York

2011-06-11 Thread John Coyle
We have bike lanes in Brisbane too, often, sensibly, between the parking lane
and the
traffic lanes. But, far too many cyclists are complete idiots when it comes to
sensible
use of the roads: my street is one way, with a footpath next to the road, and a
 two metre
wide bike path beyond that: yet I still see a number of cyclists riding the
wrong way up
the street in the traffic lane. This is particularly dangerous as there is a
blind corner
just metres from where I live, and most drivers are concentrating too hard on
not being
hit by traffic coming down the road to spare more than quick glance in case
there should
be anything coming the wrong way.
In the city too, I see bike couriers particularly ignoring one-ways, running
red lights,
riding across pedestrian islands, weaving through the oncoming traffic which
has the green
-that's just asking to get hurt, never mind a ticket.
Not that drivers are at all blameless or even sensible: red-light running and
speeding
seem to be on the increase here. Just yesterday a driver did a U-turn in our
driveway and
blithely went back up the road the wrong way. Another had been waiting a
minute or so at
a red light and decided that it was too long, so just turned anyway. He was
fortunate
that he got away with it, as that particular junction is not an easy one for
visibility.
I may be getting to be a grumpy old man, but when I see some supposedly mature
adult
cyclist riding his bike through the crowds in a shopping mall, I'm compelled to
tell him
to get off!

It is or will soon be... if there is a bike lane and it isn't blocked..
The guy that did the video likes the bike lanes he was just pointing out that
the bike
lanes were often blocked by trucks unloading, people standing in them, etc. (I
heard him
interviewed on local news station a couple of times)

The bike lanes have helped on major streets but not all streets have them so,
of course,
if there is no lane a bike can still ride on it - but must obey the one way
directions,
stop signs, speed limit - etc that cars do. That isn't happening all the time.

The other day a father with is toddler on the bike with him was going the wrong
way on my
street and when I was crossing , having looked in the dirction the traffic
comes from
legally, he shouted "watch out" I called back "you're going the wrong way"
and he TURNS
and shouts back "but I called "watch out" (!)

Every time I go out I see bikers going the wrong way in a bike lane, riding on
the
sidewalk, not riding in the lanes when they are clear, speeding, not stopping
at
lights... and they aren't getting ticketed for that often enough.

Mostly it has been a great help to pedestrian safety, tho. .. especially the
parked cars
not being right on the curb

Re: OT: Cycling in New York

2011-06-11 Thread Ann Sanfedele
Bob if you do get here in the fall, you will understand what Dan and I
are saying about this...

One thing about the cars is that the traffic can be so bad that they are
scarcely moving - sometimes at a total
standstill so a pedestrian can cross the street without fear :) but the
cyclists then weave in and out of the cars
and , as I said before, if you are walking you cant hear them and they
go so fast if you look in one direction and

are clear they might be there in a flash when you look in the other...

They even cycle at night without lights or reflector The courteous and
safe have bells to jingle and lights so you can
see them at night, but there are far to many who are way reckless.

Would love the private cars to go too, as I said earlier.

ann - frankly scared of 'em

Bob W wrote:

ban all private vehicle from Midtown and to restrict trucks to
off-peak hours.

Large stretches of Broadway are now pedetrian mall, with tables and
chair set up right in the middle of the street:

London Cyclists seem to value their own lives; some of the cyclists

Amsterdam has the heaviest bike traffic I have ever seen. The bikes
move fast, but they move together in large groups, and in a very
orderly fashion.

The bottom line is that different circumstances require different

Re: Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm, anyone?

2011-06-11 Thread Ken Waller
The latest issue (July 2011) of Popular Photography contains a review of
this lens. Biggest negative they mention is the street price - $500 USD. All
in all they like it from the excellent subjective Quality Ratings to the
placement of the manual focusing ring - closest to the mount as opposed to
other Pentax Zooms with the focus ring out past the zoom ring.

Subject: Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm, anyone?

Hello all,

Curious if anyone has tried or been tempted by this one?

I'll be traveling to Barcelona in a couple of weeks, and am
experiencing a pre-trip enablement crisis of sorts. Last summer, I
packed light for our summer vacation, with only one 17-70 lens, and I
kind of regretted it. So, this summer, my original plan was to bring
along my k-7, the sigma 17-70 lens, the pentax 50-135, and 50/1.4.
But, I wonder how much patience I'll have for lens-swapping &
lens-schlepping on the family vaca, and maybe the 18-135 (for day),
plus the 50/1.4 (evening wear) is a better solution. Then again, why
own the lovely 50-135, and not bring it? OTOH, I bet the 18-135 is a
fine substitute for the sigma, though not as fast by a stop.

My dilemma gets down to the question of the "travel" lens... assuming
you are not on photo safari, does it make sense to have a super-zoom
for travel, and leave the super-nice lens at home? Security, packing
light, ease of use all factor in... but, also image quality... what
say you?

I am also experiencing a pre-trip wardrobe crisis, but I think I'll
have to seek help on another list for that one.

:)
Thanks,
-c

I have a copy of this lens - bought it used for a good price as I wanted a WR
travel zoom. I found it to be very sharp in the center of the image but a bit
weak in the corners, and the IQ drops off at the long end as you might expect.
I think that the Photozone review is too harsh, at least for my copy.

All said, it's fine for my intended purpose but certainly below Pentax's DA
50-135 in IQ. If you're taking snaps it will be fine; for critical work where
edge-to-edge sharpness is needed it probably is not what you are looking for.

Speed, Versus and BBC America make up a significant chunk of our TV
watching. There is some contribution from the mainstream networks
(some series we both watch, some only my wife watches) & from Netflix.
And my wife watches the four major tennis tournaments, and as much
figure skating as she can find. But motorsports is definitely a
major factor. In fact it dictated our switch to satellite TV back
in the later '90s when F1 coverage moved to ESPN2, which wasn't on
our local cable series at the time. We're back on cable now (this
time because we chose to stick with TiVo as our DVR of choice, and
DirecTV started transmitting HD channels in a format that wasn't
compatible with their TiVo DVR).

There are lots of things the city is trying ot do. One proposal is to
ban all private vehicle from Midtown and to restrict trucks to
off-peak hours.

Large stretches of Broadway are now pedetrian mall, with tables and
chair set up right in the middle of the street:

Re: OT: Cycling in New York

2011-06-11 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Yes, I do believe that if bikes cause safety problems, all bikes
should be force to follow reasonable rules.

I have been to London more than once. London may be a city, but it is
in England, and the drivers and cyclists drive like Englishmen, not
like New Yorkers. London taxis are driven by sane, courteous men and
women. New York cab drivers think they are in a demolition derby.
London Cyclists seem to value their own lives; some of the cyclists
in New York appear to be daring someone to hit them with a car
(preferably a limo).

Amsterdam has the heaviest bike traffic I have ever seen. The bikes
move fast, but they move together in large groups, and in a very
orderly fashion.

The bottom line is that different circumstances require different rules.

Re: OT: Cycling in New York

2011-06-11 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
The problem, Frank, is that the bikes in the traffic lanes DON'T go
the speed of traffic; they run through lights and cut in and out and
THEY make sudden swoops onto the cross street and back, cutting
through pedestrian traffic, scattering tourists in all directions.

The bike lanes are relatively new, and they provide a lot of safety to
both cyclists and pedestrians. Unfortunately, those who are impatient
create a safety hazard.

Oh, sure, I know what's on Speed. The reference to the other series
was because that's what I'll be trying to find enough time to watch
this weekend besides Le Mans. The IndyCar coverage is on Versus
(which also has cycling coverage - Dauphine Libere & Tour de Suisse).

Speed (AKA "All NASCAR, all the time") carries a lot of NASCAR because
the powers-that-be at Fox think that's what they can sell (Speed was
bought by Fox a few years ago). And I'm sure the deal cut to get the TV
rights to the principal series required them to also carry some of the
support races, lower series, etc. But of late there does seem to be at
least a slight reduction in the emphasis on NASCAR - possibly due to
the fact that NASCAR is no longer quite the ratings powerhouse it was.
It's still by far the most popular series in the US, but it's losing
market share.

also worth pointing out that if the aim of bringing in a new law is to curb
the people who are already breaking existing laws, it ain't gunna work -
they'll ignore that one too.

What works is investigating the way traffic - all traffic - operates, and
redesigning the streets to improve it for everyone.

I've got my 18-250, which can be a little soft when pushed hard but which is
usually plenty sharp enough. It's also a lot lighter and a bit smaller than my
16-50.

I love my DA40 but have been very tempted by the DA35 macro as a walkabout lens.

I'd want to have least one fast prime in the "standard", i.e. 25-40mm range,
i.e. f/1.8 or faster. I don't remember which body you have, but with the K-5 I
can get away with lenses as slow as 2.8 a lot more often than I'd expect.

Hi,

I had a very nice walk this Sunday at Brick Lane, London and made a little
candid shot of a guy having a bit of break.

Now the way I had to photo him was a bit funny as when I first stopped
next to him he was looking at me a bit unfriendly (at least that's how I
felt). So I started taking pictures at the area (signs, this and that...
whatever :D) and once he got familiar with me standing near and taking
pictures he just started to act 'normal' again... so I grabbed the
opportunity and took the picture. I've got this little tip (or trick) from
DigitalRev TV on Youtube and I have to say it really works :)

Well cut a long story short, the picture:
http://15kb.posterous.com/a-little-pause

The reason why I am posting the picture because I've posted it on a
hungarian forum and I got a nice e-bashing (well quite what I've expected
from my fellow hungarians :D) yet I really like this picture post
processed this way. (The picture was taken with Pentax K10D + Jupiter
f2/85mm, no flash)

What's your opinion?

All the best,

I apologize in advance if I've gotten any of the names wrong. Please let

Next year either someone else who knows what they're doing can shoot the

In my defense, sunshiny weather at Grandfather Mountain is an unfamiliar

Bingo!

It's really easy to pick on cyclists - we're slower moving (compared
to cars), we aren't enclosed in a steel and glass cage - we're easy
targets.

But I've seen cars going the wrong way down one-way streets (on
purpose, because they were only going one or two driveways down!).

As for stop signs, sit at one and count the number of cars that don't
stop. I've done that several times. Not counting if a car has to
stop to let a pedestrian or another car go first, if there are no
other vehicles or pedestrians at an intersection, it's about a 90%
no-stop rate, everything from a rolling stop to barely slowing down.

Ever sit at an intersection with traffic lights? Virtually every
change to a red light sees several cars "sneak" through well after the
light has turned red.

I admit that bikes can seem a nuisance when we break traffic laws, but
keep in mind that when we do so we tend to do much less damage than
cars often do - usually the person injured is the cyclist alone. It's
been about 5 years since a pedestrian was killed by a bike here in
Toronto. In the meanwhile, some fifty or sixty pedestrians a year are
killed by automobiles. If we're going to "crack down" on bad road
manners, who should we go after, cars or bikes? Yes, I know, the
answer is "both", but please, don't target us before cars.

cheers,
frank

Having spent all of a weekend (including a Friday) in Manhattan some 5
or 6 years ago (stayed with Ann!), I must disagree with you. The
traffic speed seems to top out at no more than 30 km/h (20 mph) when
it's not gridlocked. I'd much rather be right in the middle of a car
lane, going the speed of traffic where they cars can see me, than
stuck in a bike lane, on the periphery, subject to sudden swoops by
cars diving into and out of illegal parking spots, subject to car
doors being suddenly flung open into my face by disembarking
passengers, etc.

I love bike lanes. If traffic isn't heavy, if there aren't too many
slow moving bikes, I'm there. But if conditions make it safer for me
to be in a car lane, I really want that option. It's much safer for
everybody that way.

The main requirements are:

* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body or
lens used is Pentax.

Also - as not all browsers are colour space aware, if you embed a colour
space in the image, it should be sRGB to ensure the image looks right on
line. I usually check the colour space of submitted images but I've
been known to forget.

Jack. Files transferred to a folder which is then opened in LR3. For
these i usually crop as i am shooting loose so i have a better chance
of getting the landing, take off etc. Then a WB adjust some sharpening
and noise reduction as most of these are at iso 1250 or higher, all
done on an iMac with brightness still a ??? mark.

Is there a problem i'm not seeing.

Christine, the on-line reviews of 18-135 are a mixed bag. I attribute it
either to significant sample variation or to potential bias of the
reviewer.

Ultimately it depends on your shooting style and your willingness to
carry bulk and weight. Personally, I traveled several times with a small
set of primes (21, 43, 77 or even 21 and 50) and it worked for me. I
don't particularly like shooting longer than 77 mm on APS-C camera so
that I cannot say too much about 50-135. Assuming Barcelona is similar
to Oslo, Brussels, London or Prague that I visited, (speaking purely
photographically, of course) I'd go for a quality wider lens and worry
less for telephoto end.

It would make Pentax great good to introduce DA* 16-50 with the same AF
motor as there is in 18-135, but I recall they said specifically that
they won't...

Re: Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm, anyone?

2011-06-11 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Christine:For our recent trip, I took the DA 21mm & the DA* 50-135mm.
The DA 21 covered indoor museum, storefront streetscape, playful portraits
of Darrel on the street, you know, the usual playful tourist walkabout
stuff. I needed the 50-135mm for the distance stuff--domes of buildings,
as well as for close-up architectural details--and the 50-135mm is good for
*across the street* reportage. If you will be in the country side at all,
you'll probably want the 50-135mm as well. I love the DA 21mm as much as I
love the DA* 50-135mm. If for some reason I had to go ultra, ultra light,
I'd take the DA 21mm & the FA 50mm 1.4.

As to lens swapping, I try to think about what our day's itinerary is and
start with the most appropriate lens--works pretty good, but, of course,
there are always exceptions and you have to lens change, but that's just
part of photography. HTH. Have a great trip! Cheers, Christine/Chicago

Hello all,

Curious if anyone has tried or been tempted by this one?

I'll be traveling to Barcelona in a couple of weeks, and am
experiencing a pre-trip enablement crisis of sorts. Last summer, I
packed light for our summer vacation, with only one 17-70 lens, and I

My dilemma gets down to the question of the "travel" lens... assuming

light, ease of use all factor in... but, also image quality... what

I am also experiencing a pre-trip wardrobe crisis, but I think I'll
have to seek help on another list for that one.

Er, London is a city too. Do you really believe that because some cyclists
break the law all cyclists should be forced into unsafe behaviour? How about if
all motorists were forced into unsafe behaviour because some of them break the

Great video here about a guy's response to being ticketed for not cycling in
the bike lane:

Ironically he shouldn't have been ticketed, because it's not a legal
requirement to use them.

It is or will soon be... if there is a bike lane and it isn't blocked..
The guy that did the video likes the bike lanes he was just pointing
out that
the bike lanes were often blocked by trucks unloading, people standing
in them, etc. (I heard him interviewed on local news station a couple
of times)

The bike lanes have helped on major streets but not all streets have
them so, of course,
if there is no lane a bike can still ride on it - but must obey the one
way directions, stop signs,

speed limit - etc that cars do. That isn't happening all the time.

The other day a father with is toddler on the bike with him was going
the wrong way on my
street and when I was crossing , having looked in the dirction the
traffic comes from legally, he
shouted "watch out" I called back "you're going the wrong way" and he
TURNS and shouts back "but

I called "watch out" (!)

Every time I go out I see bikers going the wrong way in a bike lane,
riding on the sidewalk, not riding in the lanes
when they are clear, speeding, not stopping at lights... and they
aren't getting ticketed for that often enough.

Mostly it has been a great help to pedestrian safety, tho. .. especially
the parked cars not being right on the curb

On the roads, yes. In the cities, where the weave in and out of
traffic and try to cut off taxis, it is very hazardous to the cyclists
and to the pedestrians. I have seen pedestrians in Manhattan forced
into a coming taxi to avoid being run over by charging bicycles.

Compulsory cycle lanes make cycling less safe for cyclists, pedestrians and
motor traffic, particularly at junctions.

Cycling is a very safe activity, and the more cyclists mix with the other
traffic, the safer all the traffic becomes. This may seem counter-intuitive
but the evidence from London over recent years clearly supports it, as does
my own experience.

The best way to reduce the number and severity of accidents is to improve
the training of all road users, and to design roads giving equal
consideration to all, instead of designing in favour of one section of the
road-using population.

Taken last night. I had to use iso 1600 on the K10D but even that did
not give my a fast enough shutter speed.

Re: Sigma 150mm macro lens

2011-06-11 Thread Mark Cassino
Well, I won't hold my breath looking for the 180, but you never know...

A while back some guy called my cell phone out of the blue (no idea who he
was)
- he was looking at my website and was wondering about the very rare FA* 400
f5.6, I never heard back from him, but he thought he saw one for sale in a US
Customs auction for only a couple hundred dollars... The guy who called was
questioning if the listing was even accurate, since he could not find evidence
that this lens ever existed. I pointed him to Bodz's site - don't know if he
got
the lens or not, but it gives hope!

If the new Sigma 150 macro is comparable to the old 180 I wouldn't hesitate. I
have the Sigma 180/3.5 macro and it's is simply amazing. Probably the second
sharpest lens I own (behind the 77 Ltd). You'll probably never see a used
example because those who own one are unlikely to sell. Ever. Check the online
reviews of the 150. I seem to recall it being very good.

I don't have any suggestions as far as alternatives go, but were I in
your situation I think I would contact KEH and have them put the A* &
FA* 200 macro on a "wish list" for me, so that if they got one in they'd
let me know about it first thing.

Might not help, but it couldn't hurt.

Yeah - I hope the verdict from Pentax is positive. Otherwise, I might hav eto
learn how to take another kind of photo.

Still waiting to test the D-FA an dTeleconverter. The cold, wet, and cloudy
weather is not helping.

A shame, Mark, the A 200 was your money lens.  I hope they can restore it.

I agree with Mark Roberts, the Sigma 180 is a very good lens, sharp and an
interesting bokeh.  Mine did break after about a year and a half, the
aperture quit working. Sigma was able to repair it, and it works fine still.
If their 150 is comparable, it would be a worthy replacement. But let's hope
you wont need to.
