Problems with PPG

2011-06-21 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Is anyone else experiencing problems with the voting on the Pentax
Photo Gallery?

Last night, it kept giving me the same five images to review. This
morning, I checked again, and it was repeating anywhere from one to
five of the photos most of the time. Has anyone else experienced
similar problems?

On the positive side, my gallery in the PPG is now up to 65 images. I
hope to equal my age before my next birthday.

Infinity adjust on an A24-50 f/4 lens

2011-06-21 Thread Charles Robinson
I just pulled an old lens out of the box and popped it onto my K10D with the
idea that my son could use it to see if he liked the idea of a bigger camera.

Darned thing doesn't focus to infinity, though! Why did I never notice this
before?

I've seen a few different pages out there about adjusting infinity focus for
some older Takumar lenses... is it pretty much the same deal for every lens?
Remove front ring, loosen screws down in the barrel ugh. I'd love some
helpful pointers.

Failing that, anyone with a craptastic 28-80 laying around... maybe I'll just
buy him one of those and throw the 24-50 back in the drawer. Heck, then he'd
have autofocus and could use the SR features as well.

Ideas, anyone?

Submission Guidelines here:

The main requirements are:

* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body or
lens used is Pentax.

Also - as not all browsers are colour space aware, if you embed a colour
space in the image, it should be sRGB to ensure the image looks right on
line. I usually check the colour space of submitted images but I've
been known to forget.

14000 exposures is rarely enough to have worn anything out.

hot pixels ... In your JPEGs or raw files? Long exposures or normal
exposures (1/20 second and shorter)?

If in the raw files, try using Adobe Camera Raw or Lightroom ... they
have hot pixel removal built in.
If in the normal exposure range JPEGs, send the camera to Pentax and
they'll do a pixel remapping for you. (I don't recall whether Pentax
supports pixel remapping as a user feature).

Hot pixels can be an annoyance, but unless there are more than 5% hot
pixels (and on a 10Mpixel camera that means a million or more
photosites are dead) there's little need to replace the camera on that
basis.

I actually complained before the weekend about the another strange
thing: when you upload a photo it is somehow stripped of the EXIF
info, sometimes only one variable (e.g., "Flash: not fired") appears
while others are not there including camera used. So leading up to
our virtual ground hog day one would find "null" under camera used
when voting.

What I tried doing though was, to delete what I just uploaded and
upload it again. Sometimes it works--things are fixed and the EXIF
details are all intact, sometimes not; I delete it and upload it again
the following day before all info are in...

I wouldn't under estimate the K20D. That's a very good camera. It does do
some wacky metering at times (less so than the K10D), but it certainly
renders some very nice images. All pdmlers who've owned that camera have
posted lovely photos from the K20D. In some ways I think its image quality
is better than the K-7. I prefer the way the K20D renders black tones over
the K-7. Cheers, Christine

The main requirements are:

Also - as not all browsers are colour space aware, if you embed a colour

Everyone should move every 3 or 4 years! A great way to cut down on stuff.

When I was moving back to Michigan after a 4 year assignment in St Louis, I

Last night, it kept giving me the same five images to review. This

On the positive side, my gallery in the PPG is now up to 65 images. I

G'day all

Only one submission so far for the July theme - 'Strange'.

I can't believe that nothing strange is happening within reach of your
cameras!

Cut off date for submissions is 30 June.

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:

* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k

YA Pentax sighting

2011-06-21 Thread John Francis

My wife is watching Wimbledon, but tape-delayed (TiVo-delayed?).
When she steps away from the TV she makes sure it is tuned to a
channel that is unlikely to show up-to-the-minute match spoilers.
Today she chose to tune to a movie channel (Encore). My eye was
caught by a Pentax 6x7 featuring prominently in one scene.

The program guide said the movie was "All About the Benjamins".

In a different view, a little later, the rear of the camera
didn't look right, but from the front it was definitely a 6x7

Today's crazy idea: RAID

2011-06-21 Thread Larry Colen
Redundant Array of Inexpensive DSLRs

On my drive home from San Luis Obispo today, I had the crazy idea that for the
price of a medium format camera, you could make a bracket that would securely
hold four (or more) relatively inexpensive DSLRs, with identical(*) decent
lenses, trigger them simultaneously, and use software to combine the images
into one extremely high resolution, or high dynamic range, image. This would
have the advantage of all of the shots being taken at the same time, and for
landscape photos, the parallax difference would likely be negligible.

I'm curious of any one knows of any work along these lines... stitching images
from multiple cameras, taken at the same time, rather than a single camera
taken over a longer span of time.

* By identical I mean the same make and model, individual variation is
inevitable.

My K100Dsuper has something on the order of 50,000 frames on it, and as far as
I can tell is still working fine. Then again, I shoot RAW and process in

Even a K-r is a huge improvement in performance over a K100Dsuper, though there
are certain features, like a jack for an external shutter that the K100 has and
the K-r lacks.

If, however, you have a katzeye screen it should work in the K-r (it does in
the K-x).

You would need to wear your storm trooper helmet when you use it :-p

Actually, if you made tiny lens/sensor units (like the Rich camera) you could
make a small array of them. I wonder if the economics would work out?

* By identical I mean the same make and model, individual variation is
inevitable.

The fix is the same as for older Super Takumars...

Spin off the front "faceplate". Set the lens at infinity. Loosen the three
screws which hold the collar to the internal assembly... back the collar off a
bit and tighten one of the screws down. Now turn the collar a bit more towards
infinity and check the view through the viewfinder. Repeat until you can get
to (or maybe just a shade past) infinity. Tighten all 3 screws and replace the
front ring around the outside face of the lens.

Took about 10 minutes, and I've never done this before. Coolness.

That's not simultaneous, which I think is the key element of Larry's suggestion.

On Mike Johnston's blog, Ctein has proposed using arrays of crappy
(think cellphone) cameras embedded in an iPad-like tablet:

True,

but the Hasselblad effort does show the software required to stitch the
multiple images together does work, so the idea is feasible
