PESO: WaterFire

2011-07-03 Thread David Parsons
I went to WaterFire in Providence, RI with some camera club friends on
Saturday. They are OMG incredibly difficult to shoot well.
Curiously, I got better shots after I ditched the tripod and bumped up
to 3200 ISO (which I've never shot at-K100DS), and was able to move
around and get scenery and candid people.

why would you want it to? it's much easier to read shorter lines; this,
in fact, is one of the reasons i chose Thunderbird -- some control over
the tendency toward unreadably long lines

I agree totally! (though I still like James Joyce)

But I wanted -ideally_ to selectively adjust the size of fonts within
the same email so that long hotlinks were on one line.

That being said, I think I won't fiddle with it because when then mail I
sent out came back to me the HTTP line WAS stretched out... as it is

However I have enough old timey geek in me to want to check out the
config stuff.

Thanks!

as with most things Thunderbird, though, there's a way to tweak it, but
it's a geeky way; the short answer it to set
mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width to "true"

the long answer is that to reach this setting go to Preferences >
Advanced > General, then click "Config Editor..."; you will find more
settings than you want to believe exist, but by typing "wrap" into the
filter area you will see just a few; resist the temptation to fiddle
with the others, just set mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width to "true" by
double-clicking the appropriate line, then close the window and try
composing a message

All are RAW. The renderings are first blush. I'll tweak the ones I pick to send

Re: OT: Or Perhaps not as it is Photo related question

It also assumes that "level" in your viewfinder is "level" on the sensor.

I know that I have a tendency to tilt images, so when I remember I try
to correct myself. But sometimes, evenm when I'm sure that I've been
scrupulously careful in lining up a vertical object with the edge of
the frame, I end up with a distinctly noticeable tilt in the result.

Nowadays, of course, it would be hard to get a 100% viewfinder; just
where the sensor is in the frame can vary quite a bit when SR is used.

Yeah, I was referring to not being able to see the entire frame. It's
pretty difficult to frame accurately, in-camera when you can't see the
edge of the frame.

why would you want it to? it's much easier to read shorter lines; this,
in fact, is one of the reasons i chose Thunderbird -- some control over
the tendency toward unreadably long lines

as with most things Thunderbird, though, there's a way to tweak it, but
it's a geeky way; the short answer it to set
mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width to "true"

the long answer is that to reach this setting go to Preferences >
Advanced > General, then click "Config Editor..."; you will find more
settings than you want to believe exist, but by typing "wrap" into the
filter area you will see just a few; resist the temptation to fiddle
with the others, just set mail.compose.wrap_to_window_width to "true" by
double-clicking the appropriate line, then close the window and try
composing a message

Nice capture and sorry to read about the emergency room visit. Good luck
with the stress test and do hope they don't discover anything some good meds
can't help with but now a days it is amazing what they can do when it does
come to the heart. My partner has had two stints put in and this last ago
around they went in a vain in his wrist and he is doing good.

Things are going to be fine and yeah I know the feeling about taking one's
body for granted. I really really need to give my one bad habit up and that
is smoking. Since picking up photography again I go out on nature walks and
the like so I do somewhat get exercise. Now mind you, I don't walk fast as I
am paying attention to the nature around me.

I wasn't going to post this, but since several of you pointed out that
Friday was Canada Day (thanks for noticing), I decided to do it. We
Canadians aren't known for blatant displays of patriotism, probably
because we're afraid of looking like this:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/captain-canada-waits-for-streetcar.html

Despite any super powers Captain Canada has, he still takes public
transit. How typically Canadian. And yes, the photo was taken on
Canada Day.

;-)

Hope you enjoy. Comments really aren't necessary (but will be read anyway).

;-)

So, we found out last night that she didn't win. :( We are dying to know
who "took her crown", and will find out like the rest of Australia - by
watching the Today Show tomorrow morning.

In retrospect, it is probably a good thing anyways, as there are ethical
reasons (have a read about the Nestle Boycott here:
http://www.babymilkaction.org/pages/boycott.html ) that I am not sure I would
be happy about setting aside so that her little face could promote a product
made by Nestle. I don't know enough about the boycott or the reasons behind it
to be able to decide definitively if I personally support it or not, but even
so, was/am a little apprehensive about her promoting the brand.

The $10k sure would have been nice though; we had planned on taking the kids to
visit the snow (which none of us have ever seen!), on a family holiday that we
could never afford otherwise, so they are all a bit bummed.

...And Lolly's ego is pretty sad that she has to go to school and tell her
friends that she didn't win. :)

Thanks so much for your support everyone!

Canadians aren't known for blatant displays of patriotism, probably because
we're afraid of looking like this:

How typically Canadian. And yes, the photo was taken on Canada Day.

Re: PESO - Cedar Waxwings?

2011-07-03 Thread Ann Sanfedele
Walt - possibly not often seen together because of their preferred
meals. Waxwings favor berries, robins favor worms... so they would be
most often seen at different levels.

Seeing them together is interesting especially to me because I didn't
realize the waxwings were that much smaller than robins. Rather
rude behaviour on the part of the center waxwing - well, or least it
seems so.

Here's one of the the ones I made for my external flashes:

I've found that aluminum foil along one side to keep the light out of the
lens, or from shining backwards helps.

By the way, you can pick up used external flashes for $20-50 if you keep
your eyes open for them.

Aren't they wonderful birds? like the "geometry" though several crops

The only time I had a truly great op to capture them up close was

I've also got three in. I won't go through the entire litany, but I
submitted about a dozen or so, and three were accepted. But that was back

Dude, you don't need an external flash. Sure, it helps. But you can get
away without it. Start by taking just a single 3"x5" index card and some
tape and scissors. Cut overlays for the popup flash from the card.
Full coverage. Half Coverage. Quarter coverage. Two stacked for more
density. You get the idea. Take test shots. You'll be amazed at how much
good a simple piece of 100# or 120# card stock can do. Next, save one of
those milk jugs the kids just emptied. Cut out masks from it. The plastic
in the milk jugs diffuses the light a lot more than the paper, and doesn't
"eat" as much of the flash's energy. After that, you can start playing with
"total reflectors" that take "all" of the flash's energy and send it up or
to the side for "bounce". Lot's of folks took lots of great photos without
a bazillion bucks of gear.

RE: OT: Or Perhaps not as it is Photo related question

2011-07-03 Thread Jeffery Johnson
When finances are much better or I get a part time job on top of my regular
job then a K5 will just have to wait.

I do have a tripod and find it more in the way if I am at the zoo and rather
hard to use on the trails. I do however end to make myself use the monopod
portion of the tripod. It is two in one so you have the option of using the
tripod or monopod separately.

My mother's health took a drastically bad turn last weekend, and I spent the
last week in Iowa helping out. When I left on Friday (another relative is
there
now) I took my mother's cat with me. The 9 1/2 hour trip back from Iowa was
fun
- holiday weekend traffic, road construction, accidents, apocalyptic
thunderstorm, and more road construction resulted in the trip being about 3
hours longer than it should have been. At any rate, he has settled in
remarkably well and is actually hanging out with the other two cats with
minimal hissing and growling.

Here's a photo I took of him in the spring of 2010, with a K7 and FA 80-320
zoom. I never regret using that lens, though I don't pack it often.

the red wingtips that Cedar Waxwings are supposed to have.
Otherwise, they look exactly like photos I've seen of that species:

i'm sure they are Cedar Waxwings; i saw them in Colorado the first time

the only possible confusion would be the Bohemian Waxwing, about which

Re: PESO-Macro... at PN :(

2011-07-03 Thread Bulent Celasun
Thank you, Jack :)

The process was simple:
Backlighting using a home-made fluorescent light source.
Sigma 70 mm macro lens (which, I love, by the way). Raw.
Lovering the contrast a bit.
Conversion to B&W and toning (in fact, the original tones were quite similar).
Sharpening for screen.

Look through the viewfinder before you push the button?
Seriously, it isn't hard to see if the camera is crooked.
If you have a tripod, use it.
If you don't have a tripod, you should be considering one as your very
nect photographic purchase.

I concur.

However, a cheap, flimsy tripod is worse than no tripod at all.

That's in the studio. A flimsy tripod with you in the field is better
than a heavy tripod you left at the car because it was too heavy to carry.

Buy a good one, where good == sturdy.

Doesn't necessarily have to be expensive, but most of the better ones
are.
