I agree on both counts: the M8 and M9 are a touch too bulky, they're
closer to the size and feel of the Panasonic L1 and feel thick
compared to the M234. I chose the M4-2 for the rapid load feature and
for the M4 type viewfinder ... 35, 50, 90, 135 frames only. Mine is an
early model with the same viewfinder optics as the classic M4, later
ones they changed the optics a little bit to make the frame lines
brighter but it also made the finder a bit fussier to center your eye
behind ... like this one a lot, very simple and easy.

My strategy regards lenses was to eschew the high-priced exotica to
start with and go for high quality, modest speed, compact, reasonably
priced lenses. One ultra-fast wide normal, a wide and a tele. For this
camera, I obtained the Skopar 35/2.5, Nokton 40/1.4 and M-Rokkor 90/4.
I also outfitted for the Ricoh GXR with its A12 Camera Mount ...
Skopar 21/4, Ultron 28/2, Skopar 50/2.5. Since all the lenses
interchange, I can mix and match as much as I want between the two
cameras and formats.

Speaking of the Ricoh GXR and the A12 Camera Mount, I had the
opportunity to shoot with one on evaluation loan to a friend of mine
this week. This may be the Leica CL reborn into digital capture that
I've been hoping for. While it does have all the bells and whistles of
the GXR embedded in it, you can configure it to be an simple, clean
camera in use and from that point forward ignore all the bells and
whistles. The manual focusing tools are excellent, the feel is great,
and the image quality even with short focal length lenses seems to be
terrific. It's not a rangefinder camera, but it's smaller than the CL
and handles beautifully.

Mine should arrive the week after next and I'll have a fuller report on it.

I had a M4-2 for a few years alongside the M3 which I still have. Simplicity
is exactly the quality that makes Leica stand out for me, and where they've
fortunately managed to continue with the M8s & M9s. I hope they remember
that, and I hope they return to the size and weight of the M3s etc. at the
earliest opportunity - they are so much easier to handle than the M8.

That lens suits it nicely.

Yes, she's not likely destined to be Canada's Next Top Model. But
you're right, a wise photog would direct her to smile with less mouth.
I'm very interested in this kind of thing: the whole "how do you
de-emphasize less flattering attributes and play up good features"
through pose, angles, lighting, etc. Yet another personal challenge.

In Sandra's case, she has good facial structure, great skin and colour,
is very slim, and has cool henna body painting, all of which tend to
cause one to forgive the too much gum thing. I expect.

As for the K-5, Houston we have a problem. :) Pentax has announced a
$100 price cut and $300 instant rebates on K-5's. I put in a call to my
local pusher to see if that is affects Canadian pricing any. Not that
I'm prepared to buy a K-5 right now, no sir.

RE: OT: Video tour of Christchurch

2011-09-02 Thread John Sessoms

From: David Mann

A contractor who has access to the CBD red-zone attached a camera to
the ladder on his roof rack and made a few short videos.

He only covers a small part of the city but it's where most of the
worst damage was. He made these films about a month ago so there are
a lot of empty sections where buildings have been removed since
February.

So sit back for a few minutes and be a virtual tourist in our little
ghost town

At 00:16 in the third video, the building on the right is the one in

good music shop left in the city, and we were on the first floor.

Obviously an extreme example of "texture." Probably unique to me, but I can
almost detect a musty smell. :)

I've decided to start a new series to revive my  interest in photography.
Maybe more than one series.

The last series  didn't go over so well, bit confusing to most.

This series is so straight  forward no one should have any problem getting
it.  ;-)

Again, this ropy stuff is actually  dried reeds on the bottom of an
evaporated duck pond. But yes it looks like  shredded rope or fisherman nets to
me
too.

Thanks, Jack. :-) Well, each picture is supposed to work as a stand alone,
just fall into a series. Texture ! may not work, heavy texture and not
many places for the eye to go. I have others that may be better. But that is
why I show things onlist to see what works and what doesn't. :-)

Frosty Wood I and Airplane I see as part of the same series.

Thanks, again, Marnie the almost akaless

This one isn't beat up, looks properly used but very pretty. Here it
is with the CV Skopar 50mm f/2.5 fitted, without and with the
half-case fitted. The half-case makes it very nice in the hands
although it slows down changing the film:

http://homepage.mac.com/godders/leicam4-2-case.jpg

Meandering around with it yesterday, its utter simplicity in use is
what makes me like it so much.

OT: Video tour of Christchurch

2011-09-02 Thread David Mann
A contractor who has access to the CBD red-zone attached a camera to the ladder
on his roof rack and made a few short videos.

He only covers a small part of the city but it's where most of the worst damage
was. He made these films about a month ago so there are a lot of empty
sections where buildings have been removed since February.

So sit back for a few minutes and be a virtual tourist in our little ghost town
:)

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5554056/Street-level-red-zone-video-tours

At 00:16 in the third video, the building on the right is the one in which I
used to work. The ground floor used to house the only really good music shop
left in the city, and we were on the first floor.

Cheers,
Dave

If I was going to buy a secondhand Leica I'd want one that shows the adventures
it's had. Prettiest camera I ever saw was a Leica that had been owned and used
rather a lot by Brian Brake. I think it was an M4.
