Hi All, Cloud services are affected by the auroral storm. Just kidding, we are not using cloud hosting. On a serious note, in the next few days, due to some urgent maintenance work, Komkon server (and hence PUG) may be unavailable or have reduced functionality (some services, including the webserver may unavailable, or available intermittently). We apologize for the possible inconvenience. Re: Eagles on the Mississippi
When we lived in St. Charles, Missouri, we'd visit the Clarksville Dam, north of St. Louis for their Eagle days celebration - biggest gathering of eagles I'd ever seen outside of Alaska. Re: PESO: PAW-1
Thanks Jeffry, Frank, Cory, David, Christine, Dan and Ken for your comments. The kitten was sleeping near my desk, I liked the light falling across her, and the way she had her head resting on the one outstretched paw, so I picked up the camera sitting near at hand. The shutter sound (K20D) for the first shot woke her, so the next three frames involved trying to maintain her attention without inducing the usual frenetic kitten behavior. I maybe coulda/shoulda stopped long enough to raise the ISO a notch or two to allow for more DOF, but oh well. It did turn out to be a good portrait of her. BTW, in the quote from my original message below I have inserted the word "seen" to clarify/correct the original. stan On Jan 22, 2012, at 1:42 PM, Daniel J. Re: "All you WORK are belong to us!" (Apple)
Sorry Igor, I have seen that thread and several other discussions in the last day or two. And I still don't get what the issue is. Loosely paraphrasing, in what is not at all a novel approach (pun intended), Apple says "you use our free goodies to make a buck, we want a share of the profits. And we'll manage that process painlessly by putting the book through our store. Oh by the way, as with apps for our phones etc. we do have standards; if your work is objectionable, we don't want your business." Sounds fair to me. And I think the Blurb analogy is a perfect one. Both offer free software which has the purpose of allowing the user to make a product which will be produced/distributed through the supplier of the software, yielding the software provider some profit. Seems a good and fair business model. BTW, I have been party to several contracts with actual publishers of actual books. Technical, textbook-type books. Low quantity distribution expected, and the publisher can only hope for break-even. So they structure the contract to read (again, paraphrased) "we are taking the risk, we are covering the up-front production/advertising/distribution costs. So we'll take [all/most of] the gross income from the first [1000/2000] copies. Then we'll start to give you authors a small percentage of the net on succeeding copies sold." I find the eBook business model to be much more palatable in that the share of profits apparently does not vary as a function of sales volume; the author gets a share of the income from the beginning. IIRC, it used to be that GM, Ford, etc. expected you to do periodic maintenance on your vehicle in order to maintain the validity of their warranty. Any more they build them so well that maintenance is pretty much a moot point, but they used to require you to have the work done in their facility. Again IIRC that was stopped as an illegal restriction of trade. Someday, if Apple publishing gets to be a significant factor in the eBook market, then maybe they might lose a suit claiming unfair restriction. Right now to me I see nothing wrong with what they are doing or how they are going about it. stan On Jan 22, 2012, at 5:25 PM, Igor Roshchin wrote: > > Stan, > > This example is not a correct one. > Nobody complains that a kitchen knife is not suitable to hammer nails, > but nobody would forbid you using it for that purpose. > > But if you buy a hammer at the store (or get it as a freebie), - > you are not going to read the instructions to see if you are not > allowed to use that hammer for a paid job. > > While I clearly understand the motivation of Apple, but it is not > the RIGHT WAY to implement the solution. > If the software didn't have functionality except for submitting > the books via Apple website, that would be one thing. i > > Stan, please read the second link, - it explains what the problems are. > They are not in the fact that Apple restricts something but rather in > _how_ they do that. > > > Igor > > > Sun Jan 22 16:41:15 EST 2012 > Stan Halpin wrote: > > > I don't see this as a big issue. They're all wanna be evil empires. The new buzzword is "ecosystem" so that you have to commit to everything produced or at least controlled by one company. Last night while waiting for my ISP to take my call, I started a book with the new iBooks Author app. The really cool distinguishing features are the widgets and their *extreme ease of use.* In my test book, I inserted a Keynote presentation using the Keynote widget; a photo with text using the interactive widget; a gallery of photos using the, you guessed it, the photo gallery widget; a question with 4 multiple choice answers--identifying the correct answer. If the reader gets the wrong answer, s/he and try again. Of course, this was the question widget; The other widgets are 3D, movie, and HTML. I didn't have any content in these forms to insert. I then exported to my iBooks app, and it ran smooth as punch on my iPad. Totally amazing. While you are designing and laying out your book, you can preview your on going work and any of the multimedia widgets with the iPad when it's hooked up to your computer. It seems to me the reason to use this app is for its amazing widgets, and if you're going to use them, then you'd need to feel fairly certain that the majority of your readers would have the device capability to enjoy your interactive book to the fullest. I have no idea how an interactive book produced with this app would run on, say, a Kindle or Nook device. It runs great on the iPad, and I suspect that was the main intent, and if your book is only going to run great on an iPad, well then any mass distribution goals might have to be reconsidered. If you're doing a book with just text and standard images or graphics, you really don't need this app, though, obviously, you could still use it if you wanted to. Actually it's not a stupid expression, just a misunderstood one (and you, Frank, with your legal background, ought to know about it). It's a legal maxim that dates back to Rome - the famed orator Cicero is the first know reference. Basically, it means that the act of specifying an exception to a rule proves that such a rule exists even if said rule isn't explicitly stated. Here's a concrete example: In many states in the U.S. traffic law allows you to make a right turn at a red light (after coming to a stop). But not all states permit this, so the issue when traveling across country is determining whether the state you're in allows it. The presence of a sign that says "No right turn on red" is what you look for. The exception (the sign that says "No right turn on red") proves the rule (that in general you *can* turn right on red). FWIW, according to the driver training syllabus provided by the Army Safety Center before I retired, "right turn on red" was the law in all 50 states. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Stan, This example is not a correct one. Nobody complains that a kitchen knife is not suitable to hammer nails, but nobody would forbid you using it for that purpose. But if you buy a hammer at the store (or get it as a freebie), - you are not going to read the instructions to see if you are not allowed to use that hammer for a paid job. Thanks Ken. I like the rich tones in the carpet but I understand your comment about it being "busy." Actually, this is a youngish kitten. Oh!No! is a 4 month female. Meg looked out one morning and saw that Bete Noir, one of our partially tame feral cats, had left a kitten for us to appreciate. Hence Oh!No! Re: OT: Photography for Kids?
Totally agree. I'd suggest the emphasis be put on composition and what its all about - isolate, simplify & define. In further, more advanced classes would be the time to get into some technical aspects of photography - exposure & the basics on non auto exposure - the effects of aperature, shuitter speed spot metering etc. Imo film might be referenced as the way it use to be. Kenneth Waller http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller - Original Message - From: "Bruce Walker" Subject: Re: OT: Photography for Kids? This is late and probably nobody cares anymore, but I have to say my piece or I'll fidget. Larry and a few others suggest using film cameras in a beginners course on photography. I think this is crazy and here's my analogy: it's like giving a beginning writing course and requiring everyone to show up with an old mechanical Underwood typewriter, then learn how to thread the ribbon and apply white-out. If I go to a basic writing course, I'm there to learn how to write. Not how to work an obsolete typewriter. I want to learn how to tell a better story using words. If I go to a basic photography course I want to learn how to tell a better story using images. Okay, I can sleep now. "A day in the life", or other photo projects..? - Maybe 4 - 6 classes, 90 mins each What do you think? Anyone out there ever done this sort of thing, or have any good resources to share? I'd be most grateful... I doubt that I'm the only one on this list that learned photography at age 12 using a fully manual camera, and processed my own film in a darkroom. Don't underestimate the ability of younger people to understand things like exposure. For a young kids class, I'd teach them: how to hold the camera How to look for good light: not shooting into the light not mixing sun and shade enough light how to use zoom, how to wait for focus How to put the camera on a tripod (or a beanbag) and use the self timer don't aim directly at a window with the flash extra credit fill flash composition As a matter of fact, that's pretty much the stuff I'd teach people who don't want to learn photography, but want to take pictures. For general photography I'd suggest: All ages, kids under 12 by special permission. This way parents and kids could do it together. Adults only I'd ask around for people with developing tanks, changing bags, old 35 mm cameras and light meters collecting dust. Day1: I'd cover the basics in the above class. Homework, go and play with cameras Day 2: I'd teach them the basics of exposure, using the histogram to illustrate. I'd then show them how to use a lightmeter (internal or external) then give them each a roll of Tri-X and a camera/lightmeter, and show them how to load/unload the camera and give them until the next class session to shoot the film Day 3: Process the film and look at it. In many ways, they'd learn as much just taking a roll of C41 B&W to walgreens, but I think that processing the film would be a lot of fun. I'm specifically avoiding color film if we're talking exposure. Day 4: scan the negatives look at the results on a computer, and discuss. I suspect you are referring to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo It made a big resonance in the news and everywhere ( and even from Bob Taylor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n12WFZq2__0 ) - but it is not the actual video reportage about the handlers. Personally, I don't care too much about photographing the personnel (although I was tempted to do that on Singapore Air), - but primarily about photographing views: interesting clouds and the ground scenes during landing/takeoff. Re: PESO: Sailor's Delight
Thanks, David and Christine. That is the real color I saw in the sky. It is enhanced by "vog," volcanic dust and gases that floats in from the Big Island of Hawai'i, where Kilauea is constantly active. Normally, the trade winds (from the Northeast) keep the vog away from Maui, but a storm north of the islands produced three days of Kona (leeward) winds from the south, bringing the pollutants to Maui. It is not very noticeable during the day -- a little haze, perhaps -- but really affects the color and intensity of sunsets here on Maui's west coast. The wind pattern is back to normal, and sunsets the last two evenings were fairly boring (but still pleasant). Re: OT: Photography for Kids?
Sorry if I've said this before. Something I've learned from my students is the typical viewpoint on "how things work." For many people, the concept of focus is limited to the "whole picture" being fuzzy or sharp. Think of focusing a movie projector. The image is either sharp or it isn't. The idea of selective focus isn't even in their mental model of the world. Given that, teaching someone how to focus or how to select between "spot focus" and "area focus" is fairly meaningless. The concept of controlling depth of field us pretty tough without selective focus. At the first session, I ask people to watch a tv show or a movie and watch how the director uses light and focus to draw the viewers attention to or away from action on the screen. The next session's discussion almost always starts with someone saying that they had never noticed any of that before. When you're describing things to the general public, I've found that you have to start by describing the artistic effects that can be achieved and WHY you might want to achieve them. Then describe how those things can be done technically. Exposure, depth of field, etc. All of these things are just means to the end of making a picture and guiding the viewer's eye through that picture. Re: PPG - Uploading of High Resolution Old Images
I only recently began submitting a few more pics to PPG after taking several years off. However, I really didn't like those 600- pixel-tall images being upsized to 900-pixel-tall images by who knows what method. I looked at some and could see degradation. So rather than delete them all, I made new jpegs from the original hi-res images and uploaded them. Of course, I had only placed about 35 images prior to the site redesign. If I had 100, I might have said "to hell with it and taken them down." Re: RE franklin bridge
Christine, I like that shot! I especially like the sharp details of the bridge versus the foggy hulks in the background. Friday was a bad day for travel. We got 1/2 hour into a trip to Iowa and turned around. Our #1 son spent more time riding home from O'Hare than he did flying in from Salt Lake City. A bad day to miss your stop on the 'L'. ;-) Regards, Bob S. On Sat, Jan 21, 2012 at 2:22 PM, Don Guthrie wrote: > Christine It looks like a snow foggy day in Chicago town.
