Re: Comet Pan-STARRS

2013-03-08 Thread Igor Roshchin

Here is some more detailed information from my colleague-astronomer:

>
Comets are fickle, so it is always hard to predict the evolution of the tails
as it approaches perihelion. This comet was discovered by the PanSTARRS
project, a 2.5m telescope in Hawaii (with more planned) which digitizes
the sky regularly to find Near Earth Objects.

http://media.skyandtelescope.com/images/Comet-Panstarrs_Mar-7-20_556px.jpg
This shows you where to look. This was made for 40degN so the comet
will be higher in the sky here at 30deg. It will be brightest starting 9
March or so. It will be very easy to locate on the 12th relative to the
Moon.

http://medsa.skyandtelescope.com/images/j_EOS+6D4140_16.jpg
The photo was taken a few days ago in Argentina showing a nicely
developed dust tail. A good comet will have the dust tail extend at
least 45deg or so.

I hope this would be helpful to some people.

I saw a copy of his tricycle picture when Bank of America had an

enlarged, rather than how you normally see it online or in small

I don't like all of his work, but I respect his viewpoint and his use
of color photography and mundane items in artistic ways.

My assumption is that they'll keep the slower discs around for a

During my most recent weekly pilgrimage to my local computer store, 3TB 7200rpm
Seagate drives were less than $140.

The largest SSD available at a comparable price was 120GB.

I think large spinning drives may hold the mass storage market for a while yet.

Well... at 7200RPM you'll have to find another vendor. Seagate
isn't going to make 'em. I don't argue that you get more storage for
the buck with oxide - but the high-speed drives (7200+ RPM) are/were
aimed at those looking for Performance (with a capital P) and for
that you'll probably be seeing hybrid or SSD-only drives filling that
niche.

I dunno. I believe that's only 2.5 inch laptop drives. I expect 3.5 inch
drives will be around a bit longer.

GESO - Spectacles and spectators

2013-03-08 Thread Igor Roshchin

We are all spectacles and spectators...
(including the photographer)

http://42graphy.org/misc/Japan/KidsAndDeer/
(this works as a series)

Being a white guy, I think I was as much an exotic subject as the deer.
According to the wikipedia page about Nara:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nara,_Nara
" Demographics
As of 2005, the city has an estimated population of 373,189...
There were about 3,000 registered foreigners in the city, of which
Koreans and Chinese are the two largest groups with about 1,200 and 800
people respectively. There were slightly fewer than 1,200 deer in Nara
in 2005."
So, there are more deers than non-oriental foreigners in that city. :-)

the pre-show shots were more compelling; the last one very

I like both of the images on your new blog very much. The contrast on
the farm scene seems to be dialed up a bit, but I still like it as an
effect. Shades of infrared film, somehow.

I think both images would show to good advantage in very large sizes
at the future Don Guthrie Retrospective at the Museum of Iowa Art.

I believe this sentence must be a typo.

Coincidentally, comet expert John Bortle posted to the comets mailing
list this morning this interesting post regarding PanSTARRS' tail
presentation:
- - -
As I had pointed out quite some time back, PanSTARRS' dust tail is unlikely
ever to be impressive visually, in spite of probably being very long in
reality. While dust tails are often very broad (particularly the one
associated with C/2011 L4 it would seem) they are very thin in cross section.
Normally only when viewed from a relatively low angle do they gain great
prominence and length.

While the C/2011 L4 has grown ever brighter in recent weeks it has been
viewed against an ever brighter twilight sky as its elongation from the Sun
has dwindled. This basically offset any brightness gains the dust tail has
experienced. Compound this with the fact that currently our view of
PanSTARRS' dust tail is almost perfectly face-on, rendering the lowest possible
surface brightness as seen from Earth, and you get a relatively weak tail
presentation.

Although the visual (and photographic) length of the comet's dust tail
will certainly grow as it moves away from the twilight regions I wouldn't
really anticipate any spectacular presentation since the comet remains in or
near the fringes of twilight and at very low elevation in the western sky for
such a protracted interval. By the time PanSTARRS does get well clear of
these it will have faded considerably, along with physically having drawn
well away from the Sun and the nucleus' out-gassing become greatly reduced.

Midwest. I may indeed try a print but the retrospective so far remains
in my basement.

It's an interesting set of images, but a bit repetitive.
Some of them are, indeed, stunning. But repeating what
is pretty much the same shot (just against a different
background) seems superfluous.

RE: Anybody still shoot with an LX ?

2013-03-08 Thread mail1
I have 3 LX Bodies with most all of the really great M lens from 14m/m to
500m/m
Other than 1 CLA by Pentax in Colorado for each body. I have found them to
be very reliable.
I imagine environmental factors such as humidity, ozone, etc could degrade
the bumpers and seals quickly.
One of the LX I use I ran run enough film to wear the chrome off the ends of
the film support rails. This camera; after I finally lost track of multi
thousands of rolls of film shot; required replacement of the worn parts in
the shutter mechanism and film transport system. The camera rebuild was
still cheaper than buying a used body on eBay and it works perfectly.
Pentax Colorado's Pro Camera service dept really did some fine work on my
equipment.
I mostly shoot a Pentax 645nII now and have considered selling off the
complete LX system. I stated with the Spotmatic in the 60's then on to the
KX1000 and a MX camera. The LX has proven to me to be superior to the MX
light meter and its lack of shutter coupling.

Ah, the LX. A wonderful camera that may as well have been designed and built
by the Fiat car company.
So, what can go wrong with an LX?
Pretty much everything.
Other than the aforementioned rubber bumper that turns to goo, you can have
problems with ALL of the seals in the camera. The back door seals can turn
to jelly, as can the top mirror bumpers.
In addition to that, the aperture cam follower resistor is prone to
corrosion, as is the ISO resistor. (exemplified by really flaky exposures in
outomatic).
In addition, the TTL flash control is beyond useless in all but the most
controlled circumstances, useless to the point that although I owned three
of them, it was the K1000 that I used professionally at weddings.
I couldn't depend on the LX to fire the flash.
All three of mine went into the shop on a bi-yearly basis with something or
other wrong. The last time, I sent all three of them off in one box, hoping
against hope that they would get lost in the mail and I could replace them
with something else with the insurance money. Alas, it was not to be, and
eventually, they were all shipped back to me.
I love the LX, but I don't miss it.

Thanks for looking and commenting, JC, Paul and Jack.

JC, I used my K-r, with t DA 18-135 f3.5-5.6 lens. Paul, I played
around with different crops, but I liked this best, even though I
anticipated that others would think it should be less centered. I
guess it's my rigid personality. Perhaps I'll call it my "style," and
pretend it's an artistic judgment.Jack, yes, the color was
there. the shot was taken around sunset, which accented and slightly
tinted the color. Although some cattle egrets are all white, many
have yellowish to rose markings on the head, back and chest:

Thanks for looking and commenting, JC, Paul and Jack.

JC, I used my K-r, with t DA 18-135 f3.5-5.6 lens.  Paul, I played
around with different crops, but I liked this best, even though I
anticipated that others would think it should be less centered.  I
guess it's my rigid personality.  Perhaps I'll call it my "style," and
pretend it's an artistic judgment.    Jack, yes, the color was
there.  the shot was taken around sunset, which accented and slightly
tinted the color.  Although some cattle egrets are all white, many
have yellowish to rose markings on the head, back and chest:

Still no joy. I was in position & set up about 5 min before sunset.
Bright blue, clear skies without a cloud anywhere except for the
beautiful orange murky haze on the western horizon.

I watched until all the orange faded (about 1-1/2 hrs after sunset) and
never saw it.

OT Gearing up for a shoot tonight

2013-03-08 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Team,

Should be a good night for me tonight photographically, I'm shooting a
very good and mature gospel
a cappella choir with special guests. Unfortunately I had to reject an
offer to shoot Deep Purple and attend the after party last week due to
other commitments, I must say that it was difficult looking at the
images made by the guy who took my place (not as good as I could have
done of course :) You win some and lose some I guess.

Has anyone else got any interesting photo projects lined up for this weekend?

Cheers,

FS Friday - Pentax K-7 DSLR $225 Plus Shipping

2013-03-08 Thread Mark C
*NOTE* Please do not reply to this message but email
mcass...@chartermi.net.

I held onto this body as a backup for my K-5 but it has seen virtually
no use in the past year. If my K-5 dies I now have the K-01 as a backup
a) and would have an excuse to upgrade to a K-5IIs, so the need for the
K-7 as a back up is even further diminished. So - time to sell it!

The camera is in excellent condition. The camera shows only a few light
marks from normal use. There are a few buff marks and scratches around
the hotshoe from mounting flashes. The back of the LCD shows light wear
with some very light scratches (normal wear), but nothing deep and
nothing that shows when the LCD is lit. All other camera functions work
perfectly. I tested the built in flash, AF, and other functions and
found no problems.

Per the Pentax forums page the body has a shutter count of 17,474 and
was manufactured on 7-21-2009. I updated the firmware recently with the
latest batch of firmware updates from Pentax.

The exact items for sale:

- Pentax K-7 DSLR body. Has all body caps except the flash hot shoe cap
(I may be able to find one for it but so far, no luck). Includes strap
lug with leather do-dads.

- Manual
- One Battery
- Disk with Pentax Software S - SW90
- Battery charger and cord
- Black and Red Pentax Logo strap
- Camera to RCA cable cord (AV Cable I-AVC7)
- USB Cable I-USB7
- Original box.

I'm asking $225 plus shipping and insurance.

- Mark

Agreed. I'm not a fan of having no clue what the images are. I also

Re: Anybody still shoot with an LX ?

2013-03-08 Thread Mark C
I use my LX fairly regularly nd love it. I was using it recently and
thought that that Pentax should come out with a D-LX DSLR body with the
real-time metering and other cool features of the LX bundled into a
state of the art DSLR. Maybe they will.

You never know, and you may be lucky, but you may need to have the
camera services. In my case the seals and bumpers were good but the
real time metering was not working. I had it repaired by Pentax many
yeas ago and it still works - I actually did some very long exposure
shots last summer as was very happy to see it still functioning. I use
the camera pretty regularly for day to day B&W film shots and it is
still working great - so in my case while I had to get if CLA'd it is
still working great.

The LX was made for a long period of time and Pentax introduced
incremental improvements, so older LX's lack some features of newer
bodies. IIRC, the SO range on some older bodies topped out at 1600, but
later was upped to 3200. On later bodies metering is activated by
depressing the release button for the ISO control wheel in addition to
half depressing the shutter button. My LX did not have this function.
but Pentax added it when they fixed it up. I also think there was a
minor difference in the dot pattern on the shutter blades for metering
between versions.

The LX is truly a fabulous body for it's vintage. The off the film
metering for long exposures is great for low light work. I think that
only Olympus had a similar feature in one of their bodies.

Good luck!

Mark

I'm hopeful that I can put in a mirror bumper pad and seals in the
