2 PESOs, tonight's dinner

2013-05-01 Thread Larry Colen
For dinner tonight, I was going to stop at a new restaurant
at the summit of Hwy 17. Halfway between Felton and Santa Cruz,
with a really nice view out the back, you'd think it would be a
great location on the main thoroughfare.
When my grandmother was a child, and they did the trip in
horse and buggy, over two days, it probably was an ideal location.
These days, it seems that nobody wants to stop halfway there, and
even fewer people are willing to face a fairly fast road with both
curves and traffic, just for a meal. No restaurant seems to last
more than a couple years at the location, even though some have
been quite good.

I decided to give it a try, but when I got there, it was closed.
As the sign says "Closed for Honeymoon". It was so sweet I had
to take a snapshot:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/869890/in/set-72157633392519732/

So, plan B was to pick up some bell peppers and mushrooms on the way
home and improvise with some leftovers:

The red, pink or white "petals" on a dogwood tree aren't petals at
all, but rather bracts, which are modified leaves. The actual flowers
of the dogwood are those tiny greenish-yellow objects in the center of
the bracts, but which is actually a flowering head.

At this point it looks as if I'll be sending my lens to C.R.I.S. for
repair. I emailed Erik Henderson at pentaxs.com with an inquiry and
have received no reply at all. I inquired a couple of years ago about
service on my old Pentax K2 and received the same silent treatment and
I have to say it doesn't inspire much confidence. I just left a voice
mail at the phone number on his web site but if I don't get a reply
then it'll have to be off to Arizona for my 80-200.

Re: Recommendations for lens repair?

2013-05-01 Thread Paul Stenquist
Yep. I have time now. I just got off the call.

The lens repair was quick. A couple of weeks at the most. One of the two flash
repairs was fast; the other took several weeks as they had to wait for a part.
I also had my K-5 in to fix the mirror motor problem. They were unable to get
parts for that after about four weeks. i had an important shot coming up, so I
hammered them a bit, and they talked Pentax into sending me a new camera. That
was excellent, since my K-5 was already at a shutter count of about 30,000.

I dug through my receipts and found the ticket for 60-250 lens repair. It was
$159 plus $15 shopping for a total of $174.00 The description says they
replaced the AF motor, adjusted the lens to manufacturers specs, and did a
general check and clean.

Doesn't this type of insurance just cover theft or accidental loss,
like fire? With all the klutzes in the world, I don't see how they
could offer insurance so cheap if they pay out for every little fumble
that destroys an insured object.

Hey, this should be the ultimate answer to the question "to add a UV
filter or not?". $30 for an insurance rider is a lot less money than
UV filters to guard all ones lenses.

The cost of the UV filter won't go up if you have a "claim".

RE: OT: Drive question.

2013-05-01 Thread John Sessoms

From: "P.J. Alling"

I've tried to get an answer about this on a number of fora but so far
nothing helpful has come my way. I finally upgraded my desktop to
WinXP. I was getting tired of having to Hack Win2K to get new software
and hardware to work properly so when I had my last primary hard drive
failure I decided to join the first decade of the 21st century, but I've
run into a problem. Most every time I attempt to search my system for a
file the OS locks up. I have an insane amount of storage for this box,
5TB in internal and external drives but then I had an insane amount of
storage on the Win2K installantion as well, and that didn't hang up on a
search. So I'm at a loss. I've tested all the drives and they check
out fine, I've run all the Windows, and a number of three party tests on
the file structure of each drive and they all check out. I'm not sure
where to look at this point. I know there are computer geeks on the
list who know more than I do about hardware problems than I do, and
probably a number who have dealt with OS problems that I've never seen.
I hope one of you has a clue, I certainly don't.

Install new memory.

Vacuum out the inside of the case and get all the dust bunnies off the
mother-board, especially out of the heat sink for the CPU.

Don't use the "feature" that allows Windoze to search all of the drives;
make it search each individual drive one at at time. I know that's
inconvenient, but not so much as having the OS lock up every time you
search.

If any of the drives are still formatted FAT or FAT32, see if you can
run the conversion to make them NTFS, which is a bitch if you have
drives you're trying to share with a Mac.

A better solution if you DO have to share drives with a Mac is to have
the drive formatted for the Mac file system & use a program like
MacDrive if/when you need to access it from Windoze.

Interesting. Somone on the local CL has a 43 for $500.
I'm rather tempted, but am wasting far too much money
on home repairs to buy the lenses I want.

He bought the three limiteds with the discount when he
got his K5_IIs, and am selling them to recoup some of

much, much, better than his K-5.

RE: PESO: Classic Continental

From: Walt

Well, I took the camera out today for a little bit of downtime. This is
one of the shots I captured -- a great looking old Lincoln Continental
that passed by while I was enjoying a Peanut Buster Parfait at Dairy
Queen. It was my first outing with my Pentax-F 50/1.7 which recently
purchased from Collin (Thanks!). I still haven't gotten a real feel for
it as I didn't take too many shots today, and have only used it for a
few throw-away shots just to check out the sharpness -- which seems
pretty damned impressive.

Anyway . . .

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/8696890437/#large
K-5, F 50/1.7, f/2.8/, 1/4000, ISO 200

Anybody know what year the Lincoln is?

Looks like about 1961 - 64 (the exterior didn't change during those
years), but I don't think that flared stripe down the side is the
original paint.

Re: OT are all usb hubs created equal.

2013-05-01 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
Almost. Many cheap ones are not full USB 2.0 speed.
Though the slower ones have mostly faded to oblivion, I suspect some remain.
If you are using a desktop, a card might be the better choice.
Otherwise, your computer may detect whether or not it is operating at full
speed.
Some scanner software does this and lets you know the speed issue.

Dave, some are powered and can be helpful for certain USB peripherals
that are heavy loads.

Be mindful that there's now USB 1.1, 2 and 3. So you need to know what
your speed needs are.

Personally, I'd stay away from the Dollerama ones, but The Source or
Staples ones should be good enough for most things.

I'd look for one that has an external power supply (wall wart). If

I have always found bees to be difficult to track, but their behavior is
reasonably predictable. Sometimes that actually makes it more
frustrating, though.

For telephoto work - not macro - I once had a Takumar 500mm f4.5 that
have built on sights - a peg on the rear of the lens and a v-notched bar
on the front. Made it very simple to line up with the subject. I wish
other telephotos had that - I usually just peep over the top of the
camera but that is not so accurate.

Have you tried the focus stacking feature builtin to Photoshop? I have
used it a couple of times and it works very well. After it does its
initial work you can go in and fine-tune it by modifying the layer
masks it creates if need-be.

It's been there since at least CS4, if not CS3.

if one is considering a hub for charging devices as well as connectivity, the

works for Apple Lightning and several other current tablets & phones

Re: OT are all usb hubs created equal.

2013-05-01 Thread Paul Stenquist
As I noted earlier, the CT powered hub I bought at Office Max won't work at all
with Mountain Lion. Attached drives come up, then drop off, sometimes
reappearing, sometimes not. I've read numerous complaints about Mountain Lion
and powered USB hubs. I'm still searching for another one that I'm sure will
work. (My 7 port Belkin is working fine, but I need more connections.)

PESO - Snowfountain

I planted my snowfountain cherry tree on April 17, 1994 to raise my spirits. A

today as his time had come. The cherry tree, which has grown quite a bit in the

Coincidently, also in 94 my dad died and a pine tree, that had been
previously scheduled was planted on the day I found out about his passing.

Re: OT are all usb hubs created equal.

2013-05-01 Thread Stan Halpin
I have a no-name powered USB 2.0 hub attached to my iMac running 10.7.5
It works fine for low-power uses like reading SD cards. And I can synch and
charge my iPhone or iPad with it. It is flakey if I attach a hub-powered
external disc drive; usually the drive will connect and be all right for a
while, but if the system Sleeps, the drive often doesn't reconnect on wake-up.
And if I try to connect both an iPhone and an external drive, the drive never
powers up.
On the other hand, I have a high-priced hub from OWC that manages several hard
drives with little problem. But they do have their own power source, and they
are less reliable than the drives on the FW hub.

Software find...

2013-05-01 Thread P.J. Alling
While continuing to customize my "new" WinXP installation it becomes
more and more annoying when the system can't do things the my old Win2K
system was able to do, such as display PEF files as thumbnails. I mean
really, there was no official support for that in Win2K but I was able
to find a third party shell extension that worked just fine. In spite
of having Microsoft's latest WIC extension neither Microsoft nor Pentax
Codecs did anything, except take up valuable ram. However I've found a
solution, in case anyone is still running XP and would like the
convenience of viewing PEF files, (and a bunch of other RAW formats
including DNG), and had the same problem I had.

http://forum.idimager.com/viewtopic.php?t=3150

On the other hand I didn't write it and Guarantee nothing, but so far it
works for me. Oh, and like most of the best things in life it's free.

Very nice Philip, great symmetry and not so obviously an HDR
tone-mapped image. The B/G CA on the interface between the sky and the
trees on the left is a bit distracting though, I'm very surprised it's
so prevalent on an image sized that?

I only did a couple of test shots with each.

Don Williams was using something for ultramacro (in fact
microphtotgraphy) work that produced excellent images. Might be worth
searching the archives.

Very nice Philip, great symmetry and not so obviously an HDR
tone-mapped image. The B/G CA on the interface between the sky and the
trees on the left is a bit distracting though, I'm very surprised it's
so prevalent on an image sized that?

Cheers,

advice sought on a shot

2013-05-01 Thread Larry Colen
This afternoon, I noticed that the sun was reflecting off
my office building onto trees int he couryard, giving the sort
of cool effect that you can get with a 100 foot tall fill
light reflector.

However, my attempts to capture it were not exactly successful.
Here are two of the better shots (one processed to both color
and black and white).

Any suggestions as to what I might do, either in the camera
or the computer, to improve them? My one thought is to shoot
a little earlier, whent he sun is higher in the sky and the
light is only reflecting onto the nearer trees,
