Thanks for these, Larry. My dad was a bombardier on B17s and B24s in the 8th

GESO - Bessaflex

A few weeks ago, I acquired a nice example of the rare-ish Voigtlander
Bessaflex in black. What a pretty camera. Takes the same Voigtlander
grip and trigger winder as their R rangefinders, and the feel of the
body is pretty similar too. In other words, nice and solid.

Take another look at the beach shelters.

I can see the ocean; there's just a hint of a breaking wave next to the

Too bad about the "beach tag". At least that's one aggravation I don't

interesting, and they blended the Hubble photographs creatively into their
virtual universe.

I liked them so much I think I'll go back with Darrel to watch again and see

I actually had the same reaction when I looked at it yesterday. I decided to
think about it before I responded. I think the composition and rendering are
great, but the subject, the woman, is a bit unsettling (in a good way). Her
expression--her eyes--her pout--all leave me a bit, well, unsettled as I said.
The photo points to the tradition of grotesque, and I can imagine the woman in
one of Flannery O'Connor's short stories.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few photos of B17s, but never one like that.
There must have been a reason.

I found an article in Wikipedia that said they were used to assemble the
formations before the bombers would fly off to Germany. The paint scheme
made it easy for the bombers to find it up in the sky.

From what I gather, the weather in England was frequently overcast. When
the bombers took off they had to climb above the clouds alone. Once they
were above the clouds, the assembly ship provided an easily identifiable
visual reference for assembling the bomber group.

Once the formation was complete the group leader would take over to lead
the mission and the polka-dot plane would return to base.

Apparently they used older aircraft that were no longer able to be flown
on bombing missions over Germany.

If you use Google Image search for "formation assembly ship", this site
is in the top row:

It was a group assembly aircraft. The assembly aircraft left the base
first, and circled for the attacking aircraft to form up on. When the
formations were in order, the attack headed to the target and the
assembly aircraft returned to base. Different groups painted their
assembly aircraft in different highly visible and recognizable paint
schemes so they'd be easier to identify from the combatant aircraft.

PESO - Barn Swallow Among the Reeds

2013-06-30 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I think this a bit sharper than the last barn swallow I showed.

These guys are harder to catch than tree swallows, they rarely perch when
they're out of their colony (or wherever they live; they seem to have a
communal living area under a wooden lookout structure). Once in a rare while
I'll see one or two of them hanging around among the reeds that almost cover
the entrance to their dwelling:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/06/barn-swallow-among-reeds.html?m=1

As summer progresses those reeds are becoming more profuse and just flying in
and out of their dwelling requires fairly acrobatic maneuvering.

Apparently they never alight on the ground as their little claws are curved;
their entire lives are spent either perched or flying.

Your swallow trivia for the day! :-)

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

frank

Thanks Gerrit. If you push the clarity slider in Lightroom too far, this is
the effect that you get. Kind of comicbookish. Every so often, I find an

Take another look at the beach shelters.

I can see the ocean; there's just a hint of a breaking wave next to the
guy in the blue shirt. The actual horizon line kind of fades into the
sky, but you can see a little of it if you look hard enough.

Too bad about the "beach tag". At least that's one aggravation I don't

A few weeks ago, I acquired a nice example of the rare-ish Voigtlander
Bessaflex in black. What a pretty camera. Takes the same Voigtlander

body is pretty similar too. In other words, nice and solid.

Also upgraded to LR5 this month. Spotting film scans is now half-way

Thanks Bipin. For reasons I cannot tell, I don't care for the tamron

Also, thanks for the feedback on the focusing. The camera seems to

Well, they ~could~ have standardized things when the industry went bayonet but
they chose not to.

Same thing's happened in other industries. Everyone wants you to buy their
products exclusively, not mix-and-match. Everything's proprietary these days,
by design.

Sigh.

I love the mannequins on the stairs.

Seeing the m42 Super-Tak on that Voigtlander makes me wonder how
different things would have been if they could have standardized on a
bayonet mount when screw mount was phased out. Not Invented Here

Re: PESO - Cape May beach, 10 am

2013-06-30 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Wow. Pay to use beaches? More commodification of what used to be considered
common areas.

In Nova Scotia, where my parents are from, beaches are common areas, as is
access to them. Community easements have existed for hundreds of years.

Now people from other areas (meaning other countries as well as other parts of
Canada) are snatching up relatively cheap seaside land and building huge
vacation houses.

Then they put up fences and "no trespassing" signs preventing locals from using
traditional pathways to the shore. I'm sure they could go to court to have
these easements recognized but who can afford that?

Another sigh (second today).

Yeah, NJ beaches are generally obnoxious.  No tag, no admission; residents and
guests of local hotels get tags.  Fortunately we're not beach types.

Don't know about alcoholic beverages; except that the whole town of Ocean City

Re: PESO - Cape May beach, 10 am

Of course the beaches in Nova Scotia are free. The water is so cold
that they have to pay people to wade into the surf.

There are free beaches is Jersey, like Atlantic City, Wildwood and the
federal and state parks. Many smaller towns sell beach badges as a
means of paying for boardwalks, concert halls, sand restoration, beach
clean-up and life guards.

Th sand below the mean high water line is controlled by the state, in
trust for the people. That means one can walk on any beach, along the
water line. Beach badges are required for many municipal funded
beaches only for sitting and sunning on the beach, and for entry
through the municipal access points.

There is a lot of sentiment for requiring towns that are taking state
and federal money to repair Sandy damage to open their beaches to
everyone, without charge.

I'm told the beaches on the Atlantic side of Cape Breton are quite warm as the
Gulfstream hits it before turning east towards Europe. I've never been to Cape

My little tirade was not directed toward New Jersey ~per se~ but toward the
rampant privatization of what has traditionally been common areas. It's
happening everywhere.

I'm glad that the beaches from high water down to the water are still common
areas, but if all ingress and egress is private and tightly controlled then
it's rather moot isn't it? Sure you can walk along from adjoining beaches but
restrictions make that more onerous and eventually all such access to those
beaches from land will disappear.

And that will be a great shame IMHO.

and very thinly populated. The only "local" we met was the owner of a
gas station and general store; He was a Jersey boy who moved there a
few year earlier.

We drove the Cabot trail, and stopped at most of the scenic overlooks.
The "trail" was plastered with signs advising the location of the
Wi-Fi hot spots. The best aspect of Cape Breton is the Celtic
culture. We attended two ceilidhs in Baddeck; both were excellent,
with music and dance that matched or surpassed any Celtic performance
I've seen in Ireland, Wales or Scotland. In fact, I'm quite certain
that there is a higher percentage of Gaelic speakers in Nova Scotia
than anywhere in the British Isle, except perhaps Dingle.

2013-06-30 Thread John Sessoms

From: "knarftheriault

Wow. Pay to use beaches? More commodification of what used to be
considered common areas.

In Nova Scotia, where my parents are from, beaches are common areas,
as is access to them. Community easements have existed for hundreds
of years.

Now people from other areas (meaning other countries as well as other
parts of Canada) are snatching up relatively cheap seaside land and
building huge vacation houses.

Then they put up fences and "no trespassing" signs preventing locals
from using traditional pathways to the shore. I'm sure they could go
to court to have these easements recognized but who can afford that?

Another sigh (second today).

cheers, frank

It's sort of happening on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Except that NC
law doesn't permit the homeowner to close off beach access. There are
some places where private beach access is curtailed, but that's because
they've been replaced by Public Access points.

The state & municipalities have done a fair job of ensuring there is
some public parking for beach goers. It ain't always cheap.

But, at least we have Cape Hatteras National Seashore & the like where
the parking is free (camping costs a nominal fee $20 - $25/night)

Hammocks Beach State Park has free primitive campsites, but the ferry
costs $5 round trip (no vehicles, carts or wagons allowed, wheelchairs &
strollers OK). Parking is free & if you have your own canoe/kayak you
don't need to ride the ferry.

Pentax licensed the K mount for one dollar, a lot of smaller players in

It would be sweet to be able to pick and choose among the Gems of each

Apparently they never alight on the ground as their little claws are curved;
their entire lives are spent either perched or flying.

Your swallow trivia for the day! :-)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/49024304@N00/sets/72157608125792619/

This is a set of over 300 35mm, black and white negatives found in a basement
of an “antique” mall in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Strips of 3 to 6 are in glassine sleeves bound in two books designed for the
purpose of preserving negatives. Contact prints are taped to each sleeve
designating the contents. The labels here are as shown in these notes.

The first three pages of each book is an index with identification of each
strip of negative, most with notations of f-stop and shutter speed, filters and
light conditions.

They were apparently taken in England.

Many of the shots are of military aircraft, some crashed. There are a few shots
of London Sights and a few shots of personnel.

Though the camera man took careful notes on subject, lighting f-stop and
shutter speed, there are no dates. There are a few shots of London mixed with
shots of the base so it can be guessed that the photographer was stationed in
the south of England.

Some air experts will recognize the planes and serial numbers and the base will
eventually be identified, I’m sure.

To review all of these in a slightly faster method, there is a double slide
show on the LOST GALLERY page.

I have added the three actual index pages as entered by the photographer in
case I missed something.

All photographs are the property of Lost Gallery. Any of the photographs can be
used on other web sites but a link back to the original here must be included

Hi Everyone:

What a day we had. Akira & I had planned a visit to the Adler Planetarium
Friday--the same day as the Blackhawks parade. We took the Brown line into
downtown to catch the 146 bus to the Museum Campus on the lakefront. We waited
and waited for the bus, but it never showed, so we decided to hoof-it and
caught some snaps along the way. It's a bit of a trek from State and Van Buren
to Roosevelt road and the lakefront--especially navigating through large crowds
and a strong summer sun. Then while walking along a curb, the wheel of a
street cleaning truck caught a can of some sugary drink and splashed both Akira
and me. I was ready to throw in the towel right then and there, but we braved
on, laughed it off, and finally made it to the Adler Planetarium.

It was a lovely outing with my littlest nephew, who will turn 13 next Sunday.
He is so clearly not a little boy anymore. He's one inch taller than me!!!

These are just random snaps. The truth is Akira and I gabbed and giggled all
day making photography a bit of an after thought, but I got 12 decent shots and
I thought I'd share. Not sure which one will be my PAW this week--maybe I'll
go out and shoot tomorrow for something different. We'll see.

Hehehe...

Rugby union. The Lions are a combined Welsh and British team, and the Wallabies
are Australia's
finest. Theyre (almost) too civilized to actually fight, but biffo does happen
occasionally.

Some marketing "genius" came up with the idea of giving plastic pith helmets to
wallabies
supporters, to reflect the idea of the m "lion hunting". Thankfully I didn't
see any being worn
outside the arena...

See http://www.thescore.ie/wallabies-free-lion-hunter-helmets-949884-Jun2013/
for what I mean.

You'll egret this!

Nice shot, you've had better luck with your 60-250 on birds than I have.

My guess as well, although I couldn't tell you what kind of leaf the

My guess, It's a toy boat.. I think the sail is a "jack-in-the-pulpit"

Honestly, this really is for your own good. I bet that if you disable
all plugins and extensions, this problem goes away. If you have
JavaScript enabled, you REALLY need to upgrade, or you're asking to get

I'm personally extremely unhappy to get stuck on the upgrade treadmill,
but today's malware environment pretty much requires it.

I've allowed firefox to upgrade whenever suggested lately.

Ok, here's the deal:

The problem with Mozilla started on Saturday, 29Jun2013. Every time I
launch the browser, I get TWO tabs - homepage & Plugin check.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

I have to tell NoScript to allow Mozilla.org before I can see the
plugins being checked.

*ALL* of my plugins are currently up to date except for Quicktime (more
on that later). I had to disable Quicktime.

I cannot log in to Mozilla.org support. It tells me my username or
password is incorrect. I cannot create a new account because my existing
account is already linked to my email address. I will have to create a
new email account if I want to create a new Mozilla account so I can log
in to Mozilla.org "support".

Searching Mozilla.org, I find a question about the same problem I'm
experiencing. The topic was CLOSED as FIXED 2 years before I encountered
the problem. None of the solutions proposed back then work.

Quicktime - You can't just download it, you MUST HAVE AN ACCOUNT.

Apple won't let me use my iTunes username/password to download Quicktime.

Apple wouldn't let me create a new account to download Quicktime because
my email address is already linked to my iTunes account. I can't update
Quicktime because I can't log in to my existing account & I can't create
a new account.

So, I have disabled Quicktime. When I start Firefox, I still get the
same two tabs & when I look at the plugins, Quicktime is not shown.
All of the other plugins are current and up to date.

I'm looking to see what other browser options I might have. It will
*NOT* be Windoze Exploder, and it will *NOT* be Chrome. Probably not
Safari either given the number of horror stories I've heard about it &
the problems I'm already having with Quicktime.
