Yesterday I spent a very enjoyable hour and a half at this exhibition:

One of the pleasures was a wall of T R-J's contact prints, and numerous test

parents trying to explain film photography to their bewildered kids.

It is a magnificent exhibition, and I'd be very happy to spend another hour and

Re: Bulk Film Loading

Thanks, Jen - so far I've only only loaded up on roll of bulk film
(Kentemre 400) plus two test rolls of some expired TMAX 100 that was
being sold on ebay. INthe case of the Tmax, I loaded the bulk roll,
spooled out the test rolls, and then unloaded the bulk roll. The film
tested out fine. I've decided to just buy a bulk roll (maybe two) a
month for a while till I have ample supply in the freezer. One bulk roll
takes up a lot less space than the corresponding number f 35mm rolls. I
usually give a bulk roll a full 24 hours to warm up out of the freezer -
I say usually, but I have only done ittwice...

Re: Bulk Film Loading

2013-10-06 Thread Mark C
I want to minimize the wasted film in the header and (int he case of
bulk loading) the tail - since that is a constant the more film in the
canister means a greater ratio fo used film to wasted film... BUT - I
have had a couple of longer rolls and spooling them onto standard
plastice spools can be a problem is they get too long. SO, I am sticking
with 36 exposure per roll for now. It still takes me a long time to shot
out that much film...

You can however fill in 40 frames easily, if you want to. But then Again
There's perhaps a problem of storing the developed frames. Perhaps you might
want to fill each paper sheet with negatives from the same roll. IIRC a sheet
will contain 42 frames. This might be a nice number of frames for one roll:-)

Funny you should ask that, because the correct name for such a word is an
'akado'. The verb is 'to akado'. Sir Walter Raleigh brought it back from his
travels - a new word from the New World, along with tobacco, tomato, potato,
avocado, kangaroo and so on. Raleigh introduced so many neologisms, as well as
unsavoury habits, that the word akado was used precisely to denote this act of
both defining and trying out new things.

In fact, though, it was a terrible mistake.

Over there in Peruvuela Walt had seen a tribe of Inca greengrocers pushing
various tropical fruits to the top of a pyramid, ready to roll them downhill
for the annual mid-winter sacrifice to the great Lord Sunnidee (pbuh). This
caused a sensation back here in olde England, and the ceremony was taken up
with great enthusiasm, but being short of pineapples (and sunshine) we adapted
it and it became our cheddar cheese rolling festival.

The word itself, along with a deep folk memory of the original ceremony, has
entered popular culture but become corrupted over the years in the normal way
of these things.

Here is some rare documentary footage of unsophisticated Englanders from the
past acting out a version of the ancient Peruvuelian sacrifice ceremony:

what to call them, made-up definitions?

Funny you should ask that, because the correct name for such
a word is an 'akado'. The verb is 'to akado'. Sir Walter
Raleigh brought it back from his travels - a new word from
the New World, along with tobacco, tomato, potato, avocado,
kangaroo and so on. Raleigh introduced so many neologisms,
as well as unsavoury habits, that the word akado was used
precisely to denote this act of both defining and trying out
 new things.

In fact, though, it was a terrible mistake.

Over there in Peruvuela Walt had seen a tribe of Inca
greengrocers pushing various tropical fruits to the top of a
pyramid, ready to roll them downhill for the annual
mid-winter sacrifice to the great Lord Sunnidee (pbuh).
This caused a sensation back here in olde England, and the
ceremony was taken up with great enthusiasm, but being short
of pineapples (and sunshine) we adapted it and it became our
 cheddar cheese rolling festival.

The word itself, along with a deep folk memory of the
original ceremony, has entered popular culture but become
corrupted over the years in the normal way of these things.

Here is some rare documentary footage of unsophisticated
Englanders from the past acting out a version of the ancient
 Peruvuelian sacrifice ceremony:

what to call them, made-up definitions?

PESO: A bit of excitement

2013-10-06 Thread Alan C
About an hour ago a fire flared up in the unkempt park alongside our house.
Fortunately the municipality had cut the grass last week for the first time
in over two years but they had not yet finished cleaning up. It took the
fire brigade twenty minutes to arrive by which time the fire had almost
burnt itself out. Only this small fire tender was available because there
was another large fire on the other side of town.

I'm pretty sure that any in-camera anti-aliasing is not going to
involve the SR system or sensor shift. The only thing that
anti-aliasing is needed for it moire. It would be much simpler to
detect and correct moire in the image processing (only the pixels
needing it) than shift the entire sensor and affect every single pixel

Re: More leaked specs for the K-3

2013-10-06 Thread Bruce Walker
Darren, the sensor shift idea would be _very_ simple to implement, and
because it would act just like the old fixed-in-position anti-moire
filters do; i.e. globally and without any processing involved. As soon
as you have to run some code over the entire image looking for
specific patterns you've got power-robbing CPU work, image pipeline
slowdowns, etc.

To implement the sensor shift idea, you could drive the sensor motors
with a single full sine wave each, with the X and Y signals 90 degrees
out of phase. This is just like driving stepper motors (a technique I
used to develop way back in the 1980's when I worked for an office
automation company designing daisy wheel printers).

Sending these signals to the sensor shift motors would cause the
sensor to describe a small circle. Mechanical gaussian blur.

I just lost mine. First time I've ever bought a new lens that wasn't

A bit anti-climactic

But...

The Pentax rep () in the shop spoke of the relationship with
Ricoh. Allegedly, Pentax was specifically purchased to stuff Canon,
the great rival in the office machine field. Every corporate event he
has attended has had high-level Japanese attendees with Pentaxes slung
about their person, when they didn't have a GR attached. If correct,
it appears to bode well for the future of the marque. Or badly for

These are Ground Hornbills often referred to as Turkey Buzzards by N.
American tourists because of their resemblance to the Vulture (Turkey)
Buzzard. They are the largest of the hornbills, not completely flightless,
spending most of the time foraging for food on the ground. They are quite
scarce with a slow breeding rate (about 1 chick per year).

K7 - the one with the chick; K110D - the others. All with the FA 100-300.

Xerox? You mustn't get around much, Attila. ;-)

The service bureau where I get my printing done has a Canon digital
press, a very popular system. It's the kind of machine that Blurb must
use in their backend. It can do book binding with the right module
add-on. The thing is enormous. You almost need a scooter to get from
the one end to the the other. They only warm it up when there are a
number of large jobs to run because it takes about 15 minutes just to
turn it on.

My last office place had a Ricoh system, if I recall. A real beaut.

To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net

Eric, Darren discussed your link speed, but you may have little
control over that if you're in hotels or bunking with someone. So it's
not Flickr being slow but rather you have limited upload bandwidth
available.

So you have to make the best of what you've got and that means
reducing the amount of data you are sending. I noticed that you are
uploading your full-sized camera images: 2008x3008 pixels. Do you
really need to do that? Would 684x1024 be good enough? This depends on
who you are uploading these for.

I also noticed that your images are noisy (based on your PESO image
20130916-IMGP6886 at 2008x3008). You may not care about a little noise
but it makes your JPEGs larger. This is because the more high
frequency content in an image the less the JPEG compression algorithms
can squeeze it. Noise is useless high frequency content.

You're using Lightroom 5 so you should apply some noise reduction to
all your images. You can make it a default setting applied during
import.

After that, well if you can't make the uploads any faster, then at
least make them more convenient -- make them run in the background.
Since you're using Lightroom, you should configure the builtin Flickr
Exporter (uploader). It will let you down-size the uploaded images,
compress them more, convert them to sRGB, etc, all automatically
during the upload. Then you can simply drag a large selection of
images over to the Flickr Exporter and let it rip.

Hope that helps, Eric.

I did, and I wanted to followup, belatedly, but I can't find the thread

to IMAP, it was among the messages that got lost. If you have a copy, could
 you send it again?

Hi Paul
Yes, I might. But the K-5 is a nice camera, the K-5II even nicer. All i really
need is better low light AF. I guess I should wait for the K-3 reviews to
appear :-)

Thanks, all for the suggestions... I will look into a rugged compact,
they live at the beach, so water/weather resistance is important.

I agree about the rugged camera and would recommend the Pentax WG, which I
own (but I don't know anything about the other cameras listed on the link

If that's still too complicated, I'd also recommend a good phone camera.
