K-3 ban on commenting on image quality
seems weird to me that pentax is telling all those handling the pre-production samples of the cameras not to comment on the image quality of the cameras at such a late date. Are they expecting some miracle firmware to come in an save the day at the last second? Re: K-3 ban on commenting on image quality
I'm wondering the same thing myself. A lot of people are concerned with shadow noise and banding. Its actually pretty normal for companies to prevent people from saving images on preproduction cameras, but I don't know why people aren't allowed to talk about IQ. I'm just patiently waiting for dpreview and dxomark to shed some light on the K-3. On Sun, Oct 13, 2013 at 2:47 AM, J.C. K-3 Silver
Hi Some guy at Flickr said that he wanted the silver version, without the grip, which he didn't need. (The siver version is only available with the grip included). I think that the Silver edition actually is quite cheep. You get the grip and one extra battery and a leather strap for appr. 250 Euro more. That's a very reasonable pricetag. I usually pay 250 Euro for the grip alone - no silver, no leather strap and no extra battery. I guess I'll order the silver version very soon - it's simply beautiful! And I happen to own three silver limited lenses - 31 mm, 43 mm, 77 mm. They af VERY nice, beautifully manufactured lenses, that can produce very fine images. It's funny, that they only make 2000 copies of the Pentax K-3 Silver edition. I guess they are all gone in early November!Regards Jens -- Treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: K-3 Silver
I agonised over it because I very much wanted a silver K3 but didn't see a use for the grip. In the end I bit the bullet and ordered the silver kit mostly because I hated the way the FA24, 43 and 77 (all silver) look on my black K5. I guess there is a risk that the Silver K3 will be available later by itself but as I'm not paying a premium (apart from the cost of the grip I may not use) I don't feel too ripped off. In fact, like most Australians, I am rejoicing that we pay the same price as the US customers. I would rather have waited for solid reviews but if the silver kits sell out and there is no rerun then I would be much more annoyed. I know they are calling it a limited edition of 2000, but that might just mean there will only be 2000 editions of the complete kit, so the only truly limited piece might be the leather strap. That's just a guess, but I can't understand why they would bother bringing out silver versions of the new HD limiteds and then have so few potential buyers. Paul Ewins Melbourne, Australia. Re: PESO -- Eastern Milk Snake
I've wanted for quite a while to get some pictures of a snake in the wild, but have yet to encounter one in the years I've been pursuing photography. Which reminds me of one of my earliest outings with my K-x. I was out driving on a local game refuge hoping to find a snake to shoot among all the other fauna when I spotted a guy I knew from my high school days standing on a small bridge. So, I slowly pulled up alongside him to shoot the breeze for a minute. Then I noticed he had a fairly large rock in his hand and asked him what he was doing. He motioned over his shoulder with his head and said, Tryin' to kill some snakes I saw down there on the rocks. I thought about giving him a quick shove over the side of the bridge for a moment, but decided against it before driving off. -- Walt On 10/12/2013 3:31 PM, P.J. Re: PESO: Dollar and Up
Thanks, Brian. It was the phrase One Dollar and Up that caught my eye. They are trying to look like a dollar store which sells everything for a dollar, and still charge higher prices for most of what they sell. After I viewed the image on my computer, I found that I also liked it from a visual point of view, although I can't point to any one factor. Re: K-3 ban on commenting on image quality
I think it is an interesting question. While one site said that Pentax/Ricoh did not want images produced from pre-production firmware, it is obvious from the official samples that they do have v1.00 firmware (although it may not be the version installed on the pre-production cameras). I tend to think that the firmware writing department and the manual writing department are given a bit later deadline than the product announcement department, especially when the holidays are rapidly approaching. Marketing could be involved as well, because they are already getting plenty of buzz from just the announcements and the few who get to do hands on reviews. That will die down a bit, and then they will be able to generate another big wave when they allow images to be reproduceds (and yet another big wave when the pre-order people begin crowing about receiving them and showing off shots). So it is a way of extending the buzz a bit. I'll be curious to see when it is that they actually show up for order (as opposed to pre-order) on the big sites. Anyway, after he had to return the review unit he said he went out and bought one with his own money. RE: PESO - Veranda
The Veranda Restaurant in Ulan Bator gets 4 out of 5 on TripAdvisor, with 92 reviews, which makes it a strong candidate venue for the next PDML Congress. Somewhat surprisingly, this means it is a better restaurant than La Veranda in Versailles (France) which is one of Gordon Ramsey's diners and only gets 3.5 from 133 reviewers. B -Original Message- From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Alan C Very interesting. Verandah was in common usage when I lived in Rhodesia. In SA it has been largely surpassed by the Afrikaans stoep. Alan -Original Message- From: Rick Womer Thanks, Alan! Among the many peculiarities of the former North American colonies is that the terminal h is optional, both in spelling and pronunciation. When one of us Yankees (northerners) says veranda, you can be sure there's no h in sight. When a southerner says verandah, the third syllable trails off into a beautiful soft ending, and the h is very much there. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

With the Panasonic/Leica Summilux-DG 25mm lens, focusing for still snaps was near instantaneous and quite accurate. Out of 200+ exposures I made, just snapping around like a tourist with an instamatic at a party, only about six were poorly focused. I left the camera on its defaults, changing only that it would capture JPEG Ln + raw and setting the ISO to 6400 and 12800, and setting it to S-AF+mf so I could play with the manual focus. Here are a few JPEG+raw pairs at what I think is somewhere around EV 0-1 light in club lighting (mostly red and purple gels). (There's also a video at ISO 6400, again made using the camera defaults; the link is right near the bottom of the page below.) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/25268645/oly-em1-low-light/index.html I'm satisfied that the E-M1 has plenty of sensitivity for my needs. It's a very fast and responsive camera in use too. It's a bit small for my hands without the HLD-7 battery grip fitted, I hope that arrives soon, but even so it was comfortable to hold and use, and all the controls work nicely. I had NO trouble focusing manually even without any focusing aids enabled, the electronic viewfinder is terrific. So is the image stabilization, best I've used. I found its defaults good enough for a quick session, I hardly used anything other than the super control panel display and the shutter release. Today I'll snap about in some more normal lighting and lower ISO settings. :-) G -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

-- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Fantastic. It's inspired me to take a photo of my plague sores and run it through Syphilitique with 2 extra pus layers. I won't post it here - if you've ever seen Cotty's hat you know what it looks like. Same here (although a too-quick reading of the subject line left me a bit disappointed that it didn't actually feature 41 high school guys). -Marco On Oct 13, 2013, at 10:06 AM, knarf wrote: Definitely works! PESO - Spider Rock in black white
G'day all I posted a colour version of this a couple of months ago. I wasn't really happy with the colours in the harsh middle-of-the-day light, so I thought I'd try it in B W. Hi Brian: I actually like the color version better. I think the spider rock get lost in the bw version. Love the angle here.
