the massive loss of brain cells from abusing oneself in various ways...

Indeed. I can true wheels, but building them is way beyond my ambition. I'll
get something decent ready-made.

On the Marin I had for 17 years before the Roberts I did take off and replace
just about everything at least once over the years, and I did an intermediate
maintenance class a few years ago, but not enough to really make it all sink
in.

I'm a bit crap at this sort of thing, so I reckon a complete build should kill
or cure me of that, and as I've ordered a bike shed for the back yard I'll have
enough room to store 2-3 bikes, and all the tools and paraphernalia which I
can't sensibly keep in the house.

I think the real difficulties for me will be knowing exactly which components
go with which others and work well together, and not getting carried away and
putting humungously expensive bits on what is meant to be a messing-about-with
bike, yet still doing something nice.

There seem to be so many confusing standards. For example, it's an Italian
frameset from the late 80s/early 90s which takes an Italian-threaded bottom
bracket, which I think then entails some particular types of crank. These bikes
were originally built with all Campy, and the temptation is to try and put
authentic stuff on, but that would be ridiculous - I'm not doing it so I can
swan about in Hoxton with the hipsters...

As I understand it, in LR you never edit RAW files anyway; you are always using
a generated jpeg representation of the "true" RAW image. So it makes sense to
not burden your iPad with full RAW files which would then need to be rendered
before you could do any edits...

I saw a review/discussion of the iPad LR app recently. My impression: why
bother? IIRC, you can use the iPad app to edit images taken with the iPad (not
something I do often enough to justify $9.99/month). Or you can synch to a
collection of images which have already been downloaded to your computer, edit
those images, synch again to move the edit info back to the master files. Might
be useful if you spend a lot of time on bus/train/plane and want to use the
time doing ratings/edits of images. Otherwise, probably not.

Thanks Jack - but no there isn't any more - the K20D was in portrait
orientation and the portrait panel, 8 of them, were almost full screen.
It
is a really wide Glacier dictating the 8 panels. The 28-80 was at 50mm

include more at the top but the sky was blank and I chose to limit that.

Back from the NY Auto Show. It was a three-day marathon: two fourteen hour
days and another eight hours in the Javits press room yesterday before
heading for home at 4PM. Rolled in at 1a.m. Drove out in a 425 horsepower
Mustang GT on loan from Ford, so I made pretty good time. I was both
shooting and writing, so there was little time for anything else. Wednesday
night Ford threw a birthday party for Mustangs 50th in and on the Empire
State building. I took a few pics with my camera but the best of the night
may have been this phone pic that I snapped on the observation deck. I was
going to reframe a bit to the right and shoot another but my battery ran out
and the phone died. Still like this one though. Right out of the phone with
just a bit of cropping to make it 8x12. I’m going to try printing it, just
for grins.

i've done pretty much every thing but build wheels, but not not on a
single bike, so the abundance of used cross frames and parts on the
market in Denver has had me tempted; latest round has me sensibly
settling for a selective rebuild of my old Miyata touring bike,
currently set up 1x6 with flat bars and Ritchey Crossmax tires, with a
better drive train and beefier wheels, but as i gather he parts the
result may still be two bikes

Been there, done that, have the scars to show for it. And I think it makes for
a great project that every cyclist should take on at least once.
My primary bit of advice is to forego the process of building the wheels. At
least get a mechanic to thread the spokes and do a first approximation on
truing the wheel. The fine tuning is doable and an important skill to develop;
the threading and initial truing is an arcane art that requires sale of your
soul in order to achieve any degree of success.

Re: PESO- Empire State by Phone

2014-04-18 Thread John Sessoms
That's interesting. I'd done a Google Image Search which showed how
they'd sectioned the car to make it fit.

I came away with the impression they had something in the engine bay
that would "look like" the Mustang engine ... just in case someone
wanted a hood up shot of the car.

But, evidently not.

On 4/18/2014 3:55 PM, Ken Waller wrote:

I hope that's not the one you drove home in. ;-D

Actually, the Mustang assembled on the roof of the Empire State building
was not a complete vehicle. From the outside it looks like a complete
car but in actuality the engine and drive line were missing. The car was
cut into 6 pieces by an outside concern - DST - just west of Detroit.
They actually built a mockup elevator in Michigan to insure they could
get the Mustang into the elevator at the Empire State. They did the
original roof Mustang back in 1964.

http://youtu.be/OXVkBu8hnHM shows the work done to build the roof car.

http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140416/newyork/140419881 shows some of
the work at the Empire State building.

In my last years at Ford, we used DST for the trial mockups used in
liability lawsuits - those guy are simply fantastic. Some of their car
part cutaways are works of art!

OT: how to avoid actually riding your bike

2014-04-18 Thread Bob W-PDML
So, after last weekend's fun in the woods I've bought a purpose-built
cyclocross frameset, which I will build up to use as an off-road-only bike to
avoid damaging my custom Roberts audax.

This will be the first time I've built a bike from the frame & forks up. The
idea is to have a relatively cheap way to teach myself maintenance without
screwing up the Roberts, on a bike that is both similar enough for the exercise
to be valuable, but different enough not to be duplicating wastefully.

Here's a vid of the sort of fun you can have with a second bike:

Perhaps causing you confusion is a good thing on the second shot as

HDR that you used in the exterior shot works well, IMO and I like the
great colors in the first shot. The bones of a place that was once

it would just be yet another ruin porn shot. (Nothing against B&W -

The second shot doesn't do much for me - kinda confusing, might work

An 8 panel stitched pano taken with a K20D and a 28-80mm f3.5-4.5 SMC F
Macro Zoom, of the Johns Hopkins Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park,
Alaska on an early fall morning. The air was so crisp it almost hurt!

(1/350, f9.5. 400 ISO)

Web viewing of most panos very limiting - will make a great print I believe.

Thanks Jack, I appreciate the comment.

You and that K20 have done some really nice work.

The K20D has served me very well and it was one of the reasons I skipped the
newer Pentaxs until the K3! In limited shooting with the K3 I'm already
seeing a big improvement in both the quality of my images and also the
ability to capture images that were marginal with the K20D.

Ken,
I get it. Also, when shooting multiple panels, it isn't practical to
consider making a number of different shots (framings) as possibilities.

is a really wide Glacier dictating the 8 panels. The 28-80 was at 50mm

Re: PESO- Empire State by Phone

2014-04-18 Thread Ken Waller

I hope that's not the one you drove home in. ;-D

Actually, the Mustang assembled on the roof of the Empire State building was
not a complete vehicle. From the outside it looks like a complete car but in
actuality the engine and drive line were missing. The car was cut into 6
pieces by an outside concern - DST - just west of Detroit. They actually
built a mockup elevator in Michigan to insure they could get the Mustang
into the elevator at the Empire State. They did the original roof Mustang
back in 1964.

http://youtu.be/OXVkBu8hnHM shows the work done to build the roof car.

http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140416/newyork/140419881 shows some of the
work at the Empire State building.

In my last years at Ford, we used DST for the trial mockups used in
liability lawsuits - those guy are simply fantastic. Some of their car part
cutaways are works of art!

colors in the first shot. The bones of a place that was once alive - the
colors scream that it was once alive. If it was drab B&W it would just
be yet another ruin porn shot. (Nothing against B&W - just hung up 3
rolls to dry - but the color and HDR works here.)

The second shot doesn't do much for me - kinda confusing, might work
better if it was larger though.

Re: OT: photo site > 1x.com

Your work would be a welcome addition to any site, Bong.

Thanks for the nudge to have another look at 1.x as I haven't been
there in a while. My first impression is that now I see where much of
the inspiration for the latest Flickr UI disaster^H^H^Hupdate comes
from. Overall I see some nice things there -- certainly there is much
good work on display -- but the navigation user interface is no better
than Flickr's and possibly worse. Many inconsistencies; several times
I had to start over from the main menu to untangle myself and get back
to the thumbnails in a gallery I was trying to walk through.

I didn't investigate the forums or other features. Perhaps using a
free account for a few months may reveal some unapparent positives,
like better social interaction, but my brief encounter leaves me
unmoved.

One good thing is that I was able to view the Fine Art Nudes gallery
without having to login or dismiss any warning popups. This suggests
that 1.x would be a useful place to host publicly shared NSFW content.

foreword. I'm also hoping to do a quick interview with Dr. Carlos, who
runs the Global Health Initiative program. There *may* even be space
this year for a section of photo information using the "comments"
submitted with the image uploads.

There's light at the end of the tunnel. Perhaps a week to 10 days
before upload and another week after that until you'll be able to
order it? No promises. I don't think there'll be any problem having
copies in hand at GFM at the end of May.

That's a nice shot.

With all those lights on at night I wonder how that city ever sleeps.

When the showed the car on the ob deck on various new broadcasts I was
wondering if I could spot you there :-) But those were daytime shots -

looks like you didn't get up there until dark

Re: PESO: Opening Up

2014-04-18 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks for looking and commenting, Ann, Jeffery, Bob and John.

Yes, Jefferey, I plan to follow up on the bloom (or others) as it
opens, depending on the weather. Sometimes they open in bad weather,
with wind and hard rain, and are spoiled before I can capture a good
image. Some years I am busy when they open, and by the time I get
back there with my camera, the flowers are already past their prime.
I hope for the best this year.

Yes, Bob and John, I know it is a Magnolia. It is located in a
Photo.Net album titled "Magnolia." The image was named "Daff" + a
number, because that day I mostly was photographing different
varieties of Daffodils, and I automatically labeled all the images of
that particular day as "Daff ###." Since you guys brought it up, I
went in and changed the name of this image.

Thanks again,

Re: OT: maybe I should change my virus protection subscription (and a digression )

2014-04-18 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Brian - Thanks!
One thing is, I'm already using Google Chrome for browsing and I
_never_ use or have used IE for anything.

Boy it is quiet around here - suspect that the overlap of Passover,US
Spring breaks and Easter and Tax time here too.

It is a bit scary on eekbay - 56 items listed - no BIN offers or bids
on anything - not even the $10 items. The comic element is I can list
25,000 items between now and the 26th for free. All my listings are
free these days as I get 50 free every month and there is always at
least one little period during a month where there are more if I
can do more.

GOod morning, guys

Old operating systems that are no longer supported are a BIG threat.
After April 8, 2014, running Microsoft Windows XP is a public health

then it danced into an elaborate article - scare tactic style. geez.
one reader wrote "sure , send me $500 and I'll switch.."

Now what was that about getting a router for a firewall?

Avast is good in my experience and it will continue to support XP for at
least the next 3 years. Here's a link to their announcement.

They have free and paid options but I've never felt the need to go
beyond the free.
