MOPAR has made some winners and some losers. At 200,000 miles, many of which
spent towing, my van is starting to show it’s age, but I bet it’ll still do a
better job of towing your Mercedes than your Mercedes will do towing it. As to
performance, it has probably turned a faster lap time at Thunderhill than your
Mercedes ever has as well. With 360 God fearing all American cubic inches the
mileage isn’t the best, but if I put in all of the seats and didn’t drive with
a lead foot, I could probably get upwards of 130 passenger miles per gallon.

Yeah, my tongue spent a bit of time in my cheek in the above paragraph, but
every car company has strengths and weaknesses. I’m glad that you like your
car, that’s all that matters for you. The only car Mercedes has made in recent
memory that has held any appeal to me is the Smart, but I’m not into
luxobarges. On the other hand Chrysler made the Viper GTS, and until you’ve had
eight liters of V10 pass you on the track at full song you simply cannot
comprehend the concept of priapism in a can.

Everyone in the automotive industry that I’ve heard or read has pretty much
said what Paul did. Daimler came in, raped over Chrysler. When there seems to
be a consensus among people who know more about the automotive industry than
you do about Apple computers, I suspect that there might be something to what
they say. I might not ask Paul for advice on which iPad to buy, but
considering that he’s worked for both of the auto companies under discussion, I
have a hunch that he’s not just blowing smoke out of his ass.

>
> And Audi is a brand-engineered VW.

And Porsches are nothing but VWs with a hormone imbalance, or as I’ve heard
them described “A really bad idea that has been meticulously perfected”. Even
so, you might want to chat with John Buffum about Audis deficiencies.

I don’t think anyone has serious complaints with Leicas, just their prices and
some of the people who own them.

I think it’s a few feet high. Most of the shots in the set are to show a
friend as a possible place to go take some photos when she’s in town.

Actually there wasn’t much motion in the bubbles, which is why they stuck
around. If you look at the timestamps on the photos the patterns barely change
over several minutes. I just rather liked the mandlebrotty paisleyish patterns
that the bubbles made. They seem to be photos some people like and others
don’t.

There is a rock showing through. I don’t know if it’s revolting scum,
sometimes bubbles on the surface don’t dissipate instantly. I rather liked the
patterns made by the bubbles.

There are a lot of photos that would be improved by the presence of a naked
girl. Come to think of it, most of my photos would be improved by the presence
of a naked girl because I’d have something better to do than take pictures.

Re: K 3 Question

2014-04-27 Thread Ken Waller

Thanks Paul & Mark.

What I finbally figured out was the when you have the focus set to be
moveable via the 4-way controller, you loose the ability to access the
functions indicated on the 4 way controller - drive mode being one of them.

Camera manuals are really the pits nowadays. I have similar issues with the
Nikon Coolpix manual !

There are so many features on the K-3 that are mentioned but not elaborated
on in the manual.

OT: A little video from today's storm chase

2014-04-27 Thread Darren Addy
The U.S. set a record this year for the latest tornado fatality (at
least going back to 1916). Tornado alley wasn't populated by many
prior to that time, but technically May 5, 1915 and May 6, 1900 hold
the records kept since 1880). Source:
http://www.weather.com/safety/tornadoes/no-tornado-deaths-safety-streak-record-20140420

Condolences to the friends and family of those who lost their lives in
today/tonight's outbreak. Mayflower, Arkansas appears to have taken
the most crushing hit of the day.

Nebraska's storms were nothing by comparison. I had a decently
successful solo chase. I picked the right storm and then stayed on it
for approximately 65 miles and it rewarded me with some nice moments.
Video of what appears (to me) to be a tornado trying to form west of
York, NE. My last still shot shows that it may in fact have reached
the ground. But I think this would otherwise classify as a "rotating
wall cloud". About 20 miles north of this, on rural roads, I got a
brief look at the "elephant trunk" tornado. (The storm was
Tornado-Warned for approx. 40 minutes).

http://youtu.be/wmVFeSiSfgE

Apologies for the in/out focus on some of the video. It was a borrowed
camera and I really need to read the manual. :\

Stills coming.

Re: Seeking advice on a shot

2014-04-27 Thread Mark C
It looks like you had some nice light but none of these work well for
me. As Bill suggest, they are lacking a strong center of interest. There
is some nice light apparent, especially in the first shot and the last.
I also struggle with the scale here - looks to be a pretty small
waterfall, maybe a foot or so high?

I don't know about the frothy foam in the latter images though - looks
like the kind of thing that is immensely appealing because of its motion
but doesn't work in still photos. (I've shot many images of grass waving
in the breeze, sand blowing down the beach, tress bending under the wind
that have come back with nothing...)

Maybe wade out into the little stream, plop your camera close to the
waterfall, dial down the ISO and put on a ND filter (or a polarizer) and
try for a silky water shot. Or skip the slow shutter and do a multi
exposure of the falling water (not so silky but still conveying a sense
of motion.)

Maybe a bit of cart before horse here. Daimler (who owned Mercedes)
bought Chrysler, not the other way around. Mercedes quality may have
suffered during those years, but it wasn't Chrysler's fault.

Chrysler suffered more under Daimler's control than Mercedes ever did.

Nice sets with some really great standouts - Waiting in the airport is
great in how the subject is positioned and framed - since you probably
could not direct the subject to sit in a certain place and posture you
did a masterful job of composing the found scene. "Trees & benches" show
a fabulous infusion of wonderful light into otherwise common scenes -
really great. The first one in particular is very strong.

Great stuff!

With some practice I managed a .165, on one critter, but my overall average was
well into the twos and made me a bobbing bobcat. Good drag racers hit .030
starting line reaction times regularly, but they’re focused on one light. A
.165 time is considered “sleeping"

2014-04-27 Thread Paul Stenquist
Oh my! You do invent your own reality, don’t your? I was there when Daimler and
Chrysler “merged," working on the Chrysler ad biz, so I’ll educate you.
Chrysler never owend" Daimler. Eaton and the rest of Chrysler mangement sold
out to Daimler for a huge amount of cash. Daimller was calling all the shots.
Hell, they sent Dieter Zetsche, who is now Daimler CEO, here to run the
Chrylser group. (Zetsche was a nice guy. We had a good time at Daytona when
Dodge premiered in NASCAR, but his loyalty was definitely to the motherland.)
At the time, Mercedes was not doing well, but Chrysler had 9 billion dollars in
the bank. Daimler emptied Chrysler’s piggy bank in a matter of years, then left
town, leaving a broke and decimated Chrylser behind. Cerebus dragged the
carcass around for a few years, then Marchione came to town and saved Chrysler.
Unlike Daimler, Marchione really means it. He wants Chrylser to succeed. And
they are.

I worked on the Mercede-Benz ad biz as well at McCaffrey & McCall in the 1980s.
(My commercial, “Interview” iis still considered the best Mercedes spot of all
time and it won the Gold Clio for best automotive spot of 1990.) Mercedes was
on a roll when I wrote that commercial, but withing months Lexus and Infiniti
came on the scene, and Daimler panicked. They told me they could no longer be
“Emgineered Like No Other Car In the World.” It was too arrogant. And they took
a lot of content out of the cars so they could match the prices of the Japanese
cars. I bailed and went to Detroit, and Mercedes quality declined. But the
Germans are smart and they have a huge pool of engineering talent to draw on.
Mercedes has made gains in recent years, but they never quite recovred. In many
ways, they still trail BMW and Audi. And of course it’s heresy in the PC world,
but Cadillac is producing better products than Mercedes for some segments — the
ATS vs. the C-Class and the CTS vs. the E-class. Mercedes has a future, but
they’re not the world leader they were in the 1980s.

IR Converted Pentax K-10D and DA 17-70 f4.

One problem I've experienced with the IR converted body is that some lenses
have an IR 'hot spot" in the center of the frame - more than a spot really,
but a good deal of the frame. The DA 16-45 is particularly bad with this,
the 18-55 less so. The 17-70 seems to be ideal for IR - no hot spot and it
seems to be quite sharp in IR.

Comments welcomed.

Re: GESO: NY Auto Show

2014-04-27 Thread Paul Stenquist
The NY Auto Show is still a major industry event, although the Detroit show may
now overshadow it a bit in terms of new car introductions and international
press coverage. That’s partly a result of timing. NYIAS comes on the heels of
L.A., Detroit, and Geneva shows, so it’s starting from a tough spot. Highlights
at this year’s NY show included the Camry and Sonata previews. The Alfa 4C was
also shown, and it’s a spectacular styling exercise, but only 850 cars will be
available in the U.S. market this year and those will be pricey. But it
provided a bit of excitement at the show.

My lack of enthusiasm is perhaps just a product of exhaustion — covering auto
shows for the Times is a lot of hard work for me, about 2,000 words of copy and
quite a few photos in just two days — coupled with too many years in the car
biz. After half a century, my fascination with automobiles has worn a bit thin.

exercise, and I had it on its way to Times Tower within about a minute. It
went live on the web two minutes later. Repeated the same exercise with
Bill Ford and the 50th Anniversary Mustang the next day. Fun stuff, but my
2009 Macbook is getting annoyingly slow as the RAW files grow in size.
Time for a new Airbook i think. The last three pics are from Ford's
Mustang birthday party in the Empire State Building. I escorted my adult
daughter there — she’s a Brooklyn resident -- and we were able to sample
quite a wide variety of pricey adult beverages and some fabulous food. A
 fun night.

Thanks Ann. I made sure the paving wasn't totally gone when editing, I
left just enough detail and shading on it so that it wasn't blown out. I
wanted it to feel bright, contrasty and hot as opposed to the wet and
dark corridor. The only blown out parts on my monitor are the white
plastic stackable boxes :-)

Thanks to all who looked

Seeking advice on a shot

2014-04-27 Thread Larry Colen
This afternoon I went on a short hike to see if I could find a waterfall that I
had been told about.

There is a photo that I made several attempts at. I like it, but I don’t think
I’ve got it at it’s best.

870, 872 and 875 in this set:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157644355302375/

875 is processed as black and white.
872 was shot in a vertical format and rotated to horizontal.

Constructive advice sought.

I think Ravenna is also rather well cared of, by Italians born and living
here.
Huh? English people in Le Marche? Sure someone has to live there, but
nothing prominent for sure. Never met one there.
I agree that Romagna (where I live) and Le Marche are in better shape,
cleaner and better looked after than other areas in Italy.

That is always true according to the n+1 formula. Which applies equally to
cameras and lenses.

Yesterday I asked an Italian friend about Abruzzo. She said it is "very
bleak", and recommended Le Marche instead, which she says has the most
beautiful landscape she's ever seen. Also it is looked after properly by all
