Re: Get with the times (FF DSLR, etc)
These have been most fascinating threads showing much emotion. But the world moves on clearly from a business perspective it makes no sense to look back. The K1000D is but a pipedream. If people really want to use pre-A lenses, they can easily work in M mode and use Sunny 16 like we all did long ago ( waste no film). A lenses are no problem besides being MF. The fusspots can always post-edit the EXIF. Does anyone really need or use an aperture ring any more? (PJ's intelligent adaptors could be made by a third party! Old Pentax lenses with adaptors are widely used on Can*ns with great success). And I agree - get the cameras in the shops - it's almost Christmas. Quoting P.J. Alling webstertwenty...@gmail.com: Sadly I agree with Cotty, the FF camera will be Ricoh branded, mirrorless with a newly developed lens mount similar to and electrically compatible with the KFA mount, and an adapter that will allow all K mount lenses to be used at the proper register distance. The adapter will come in two versions, an auto focus adapter module with a motor to drive screw driven lenses, and one that simply passes through power for lenses with built in motors. Both adapters will have also have provision to actuate the the stopdown lever in K mount lenses, of all vintages as the new camera will have only electrical contacts to control those motors in the new R mount lenses. For purest it will include an aperture simulator that will translate the f stop of the adapted lens to electrical data for the camera's metering system. Re: FF daydreaming
But remember the K-01 was developed under Hoya, and was the cheapest way to achieve a mirrorless camera possible, which was to take a K-r lop off the prism, replace the mirror box with a plain box and put redesigned plastic body panels on the existing stainless steel frame. There were a number of ways that Hoya could have gone with the K-01 concept and except for the expensive industrial/fashion designer, Hoya always followed the cheapest path. There were firmware changers necessary, but the important ones had mainly to do with removing code not adding it. On 9/19/2014 5:32 AM, Brian Walters wrote: Quoting P.J. Re: Pentax Confirms Full Frame DSLR - Photokina 2014.
I don't know how much credence you can put in journalistic endeavors that get basic facts wrong. I guess we can believe what they wrote, even though this won't be Pentax's first full frame DSLR, the late lamented and almost forgotten, or so it seems MR-52, a FF 6mp, often refereed to as the MZ-D and at least once re-branded as the K-1, was probably mere months from a formal announcement and full production. It was probably scuttled by three things, 1 and 2 Canon and Kodak both announced at Photokina that year, 11mp and 14mp full frame DSLRs, that would have sold for less than Pentax could probably produce, let alone sell the camera for, and 2 the Philips CCD the camera was to built around was problematic at best, which probably killed Contax/Yashica, when they decided to go forward with production. There were supposed to be at least 6 hand built prototypes that were in circulation for testing and maybe more that never made it out of a Pentax facility. If the cameras never made it out a R*D lab, I couldn't count them, but this almost made it into the wild. When I was first thinking about having a made-to-measure bike Witcomb's was one of the places I spent time talking to him. The shop still looked exactly as it does in that photo - it was a wonderful place. I eventually decided on Roberts, and shortly afterwards Witcomb's moved to Wales and disappeared. Pentax has definitely failed to promote the Green button. To me it's just a Mystery Button that I could just as easily cover over with black electrical tape. After it got talked about here a few years ago, I made the effort to read up on it. The manual left me scratching my head, but folks here insisted it was awesome. I think the issue with the manual is there's no overview or Big Picture -- why it was added. When I tried it out, no matter what I did with it it just seemed to produce random and inscrutable results -- incorrect exposures -- with no apparent benefit to me. I think of it as the Do Not Press Me Ever button. It just presents one more opportunity for me to fsck up the settings if I fumble-finger it. Re: Get with the times (FF DSLR, etc)
The green button is a mystery because it does so many different things. In manual mode it recenters everything press the green button while holding down the exposure compensation button it resets that control to zero, it does that with a number of setting, press it down while holding down the ISO button and it, hell it sets the camera to auto ISO in the K-5 cameras, I don't remember what it does on the K20D but then ISO is hidden in the OK button, and I never tried it, on *ist series cameras well the *ist-D it does nothing. In hyper program it resets the camera to program mode using the set program line, which it's done from the beginning, in hyper manual it sets the program mode exposure for what you're pointing at. Using a K M lens it sets the proper shutter speed, but I wouldn't trust that setting if you've picked a f stop over f8, probably not over f5.6. The KxxD cameras added a bunch of functions over the earlier ist-d and theh K-5 cameras added even more functions, which may or may not be documented anywhere, and which further can lead to confusion, but the core features are resetting to the program line in M and P modes. On Wed, Sep 17, 2014 at 7:25 PM, Mark Roberts postmas...@robertstech.com wrote: That depends. A 24-megapixel FF would have significantly lower pixel pitch than a 24MP APS-C sensor – even a 36MP FF has slightly lower pixel pitch – so both should theoretically be less lens-critical than 24MP APS-C. If Pentax offered a FF camera with the 24MP sensor, it would have to have an anti-alias filter due to that bigger pixel pitch... which seems a step backwards from where Pentax has been with the IIS and the K-3. Sony is rumored to be announcing new full frame cameras with a new 40+ MP sensor in January. That would presumably NOT require an AA filter. IF TRUE, I would expect to see Nikon offering a full frame camera with that same sensor soon after Sony. What if Pentax adopted that sensor for their full frame? Some think that this may encroach too much on the 645z, but only if you ignore the benefits of having the 51MP with a larger pixel pitch, leaf shutter lenses, etc. Besides, both are catering to an entirely different lens customer. When Pentax talks about market conditions I think they mean that we aren't going to offer a 24MP full frame when everybody else's releases has made now that look like yesterday's news. -- Photographers must learn not to be ashamed to have their photographs look like photographs. ~ Alfred Stieglitz -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Flipping a DNG file horizontally?
I'm scanning old slides, using Vuescan and saving them as .DNG files. I just got to the end of a batch of 36 slides on the *LAST* slide I discover that I've put them all in the scanner BACKWARDS!! Is there any program that will let me flip .DNG images horizontally and KEEP them as .DNG files? Photoshop will only let me save them as .PSD files and FastStone Image Viewer appears to only allow me to do it if I save them as JPEGs. Irfanview says I can save it as a RAW file, but when I tried that I haven't been able to find the file. Re: Pentax Confirms Full Frame DSLR - Photokina 2014.
I had a bit of a windfall earlier this year so I was able to buy the K-3 without having to plunder my savings against the day ... if it ever came. By the time it actually shows up at my local pusher I might be able to afford it. I've got lenses I expect I'll be able to use - FA50/1.4, FA43/1.9 Limited, FA77/1.8 Limited and A100/2.8 Macro, along with a Tokina ATX-Pro 80-200/2.8. Maybe if things work out I'll have the Tokina ATX-Pro 28-70/2.8 repaired working again. Re: Flipping a DNG file horizontally?
PhotoShop will let you save them as jpg, tiff, PSD and a number of other formats. Why would you want to save them as DNG once they’ve been rendered? The only advantage I’ve seen with DNG is that I can tweak the files in ACR before fine tuning them in PhotoShop. Re: Flipping a DNG file horizontally?
I don't want to render them. I may want to render them in the future, but for now, I just want to flip them so that they're the right way round, so that I don't have to worry whether I'll remember it later. If there's no way to keep them as .DNG files, I'll just have to scan them again and get them the right way around this time.
