Oddly enough, I've always assumed it's me being a lazy photographer. When I
used film it was, say ISO 100, that was what you had to work around. Modern
DSLRs seem to want to pump up the ISO a bit, and I'd never really thought
too much about it, because most modern DSLRs take amazing images even when
you crank the ISO up really high.

Sometimes it's too easy to get out of the tripod exposure zone with a modern
DSLR.

Anyway, I will get to use some low ISO film shortly, and I'm hoping that a
36 exposure roll of film will make me think more about the image I'm
composing. Hopefully, this discipline will be there to transfer back to the
DSLR. Maybe that is what I need to gain from film again, more than anything
else?

fair price for my camera bodies when they went, but I note that prices are
staying very buoyant.

Now I have no idea if that is down to an increase in film use, or there is
an increase in film body collection, for people who put them in display
cabinets. Either way, there is still a market for them at reasonable prices.

The film I like is available again, and decent processing is available too.
I don't know if this is down to a short term trend for using film again
(along with fixed geared bikes and beard wax), but as I found a box of old
film camera accessories which I thought I'd long ago sold, it's just a
matter of finding a film body and film of my choice. A small investment
compared with a new DSLR.

If I find I have missed it, and I like the results and other people do the
same, I suppose it's possible that film may hang on a touch longer.

I regret selling my film camera bodies - well, I should have kept one, but I
didn't see a future use for them and didn't want them sitting on a shelf.
Over the years with film stocks and manufacture declining, I assumed I'd
made the right move, but it was comparing the results of both (film &
digital prints) recently which made me think again. Plus, for whatever
reason, it appears that at this moment, I can get film and quality
processing again.

35mm film v 35mm DSLR

2015-02-08 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Ken, I found your dissection on film vs digital an eye opener.
Very wonderfully illustrated.
You will note on concluding that I went with Digital as a technology
of the future.
But a few clarifications may be in order:-
a) With 400 ASA film I would go down to 1/30 sec and f 2 to capture
street scenes at night, with excellent translation on print.
Using TAv mode on the the K20D or the K-5 IIs with the same
settings the camera would choose 1200 ASA or more.
I would assume that film is more forgiving. Actually cannot
explain this. A mystery to me??
b) Yes RAW capture is simply amazing with minimum 8-stops of
manipulation on the K-5 IIs. But such PP in the Film Era was very
limited, and PP was not on my mind when I raised this point that
"Film was more forgiving producing usable photos with under or
 over exposure.
c) Your point well taken on "Shadow areas held more detail".
f) You will note that great dramatic commercial Movies are still made
on film media. I have nothing much to say on this.
Except that I have stashed away 35 mm and 120 Roll Film in my
Fridge in the hope that one day I will take out my Leica SLR and
the Rolleiflex F 2.8 Planar TLR for some magic.
Thank you Ken for some simulating inputs.
Regards.

It seems that could be incorporated into the any camera with sensor
shift technology with a simple firmware upgrade, the processor in the
K20D might just about choke handling the data, but still it probably
could be done.

I'm not sure that it makes any difference to me as the limitations are
quite severe for what is essentially a hand held device. A good tripod
long exposures and there would still be tell tale artifacts.

Still it does explain why the new FF body gives off a 6x7 vibe if true.

True diehards can build their own film coating machine, (the blueprints
used to be available on line). It would take a great deal of dedication
to do but, for black and white film at least, there's nothing that would
be insurmountable.

I do not see film doing well in the long term. The modest resurgence
in film types and brands in the past few years is probably just a dead
cat bounce. Once the market shook out the surviving manufacturers were
able to retreat a little less, and put some new labels on the market.
Some facts that do not bode well for film -

1. Film prints of movies have declined drastically. This was a huge
driver of the film market. It is questionable whether consumer demand
for film can drive the market.
2. Very few film cameras are still made. The second hand market will
support users in the short term, but without cameras that use film,
the demand for it will die.
3. Its doubtful that the market demand will justify building new film
manufacturing facilities. Many existing facilities are quite old and
cannot be repaired, Efke abruptly stopped making film when their
decades old manufacturing facility reached the point where it was not
operable.
4. The price of film now is much higher than in the past, and it will
continue to increase as demand drops. Higher price = less demand.

I expect film will survive for a few more decades and that B&W film
will be last to go, with color transparency being the first to go.
Eventually, I would expect that hand coated glass plates will be
around longer than film, simply because hobbyists can make a plate
with a modest investment but film can only be made in industrial
facilities that probably will be cost prohibitive to build in the future.

If the future is one of great prosperity where people have a lot of
disposable income and the trade in luxury goods is very high - well
then maybe film will survive.

color work completely (I used to shoot lots of 35mm transparencies).

I don't think that demand for film has increased, at least not on a
long term basis. It seems to me that demand has stabilized and is
declining more slowly than in past years when the demand dropped
drastically. On the supply side, a lot of suppliers have dropped out of
the market and those that remain have reduced their product lines. But,
the surviving manufacturers are facing less competition.

Many for my favorite films of the past - Agfa APX, Neopan 400, Neopan
SS, Plus-X, HIE have been discontinued. While there has been a mild
resurgence in the varieties of film in recent years and some new brands
appearing on the market the selection is still nowhere near where it
was at films peak about 15 years ago.

I enjoy the process of shooting and developing film (B&W) and also
scanning it and applying digital enhancements to scanned negs, which is
slightly different than for digital captures. For certain niches of
photography I think that well handled 120 film in 6x7 format can
produce superior resolution and detail than my DSLR's, but that gap has
gotten very narrow and I expect will disappear with my next DSLR
upgrade.
Ok, film is alive and well, and complementing digital use. Very
interesting.
The one thing I really miss which digital just doesn't give me the
pleasure

of, is 35mm transparency film and it will that that I will go for. I
couldn't find any a few years back, but now it is there I would like
to see
how it compares again with digital - not just in terms of the end

Film was never difficult to get, around here, just the dirt common types
and the really esoteric are hard to find, used to be just the latter for
a long time, now you can't find a consumer grade film. The last films I
was using regularly was Kodacolor Gold in ASA 400. It was available for
about two bucks a roll, and Tri-X, the price was the same. Now the
price has doubled, and you can't find the Kodacolor. Other emulsions are
available, and pretty much always have been. About the only film I've
shot in the last five years has been 120 rewound onto 620 spools for my
Kodak Medalist. I'm kind of sad that it's become cost prohibitive to
shoot 120 slides, I understand the images the Medalist produces on
transparency film are incredible.

By the way if anyone want's to take their Auto 110 our for a spin, I
found some film for ya.

If you were photographing out of the left hand side of the train, my

Re: 35mm film v 35mm DSLR

2015-02-08 Thread Mark C
If you are going to get back into film then this is probably the time to
do it.

I do not see film doing well in the long term. The modest resurgence in
film types and brands in the past few years is probably just a dead cat
bounce. Once the market shook out the surviving manufacturers were able
to retreat a little less, and put some new labels on the market. Some
facts that do not bode well for film -

1. Film prints of movies have declined drastically. This was a huge
driver of the film market. It is questionable whether consumer demand
for film can drive the market.
2. Very few film cameras are still made. The second hand market will
support users in the short term, but without cameras that use film, the
demand for it will die.
3. Its doubtful that the market demand will justify building new film
manufacturing facilities. Many existing facilities are quite old and
cannot be repaired, Efke abruptly stopped making film when their decades
old manufacturing facility reached the point where it was not operable.
4. The price of film now is much higher than in the past, and it will
continue to increase as demand drops. Higher price = less demand.

I expect film will survive for a few more decades and that B&W film will
be last to go, with color transparency being the first to go.
Eventually, I would expect that hand coated glass plates will be around
longer than film, simply because hobbyists can make a plate with a
modest investment but film can only be made in industrial facilities
that probably will be cost prohibitive to build in the future.

If the future is one of great prosperity where people have a lot of
disposable income and the trade in luxury goods is very high - well then
maybe film will survive.

I use a bit of 35mm B&W film - probably about 75 rolls last year. I
shoot maybe 15 to 20 rolls of color 120 film in either the 6x7 or a 6x6
TLR and a similar number of 120 B&W film. Digital has replaced my 35mm
color work completely (I used to shoot lots of 35mm transparencies).

Very interesting.
The one thing I really miss which digital just doesn't give me the pleasure
of, is 35mm transparency film and it will that that I will go for. I
couldn't find any a few years back, but now it is there I would like to see
how it compares again with digital - not just in terms of the end result,
but for me I suppose the journey is important.

Another movie recommendation: Mr. Turner

2015-02-08 Thread Mark Roberts
Another film you should get out and see. Mr. Turner is pretty amazing.
Stupendous acting performances, but for photographers the highlight is
the cinematography. They'd originally planned to shoot on film rather
than digital but ended up not having the budget (which is a topic unto
itself). What they ended up doing is shooting on digital but with very
old 'out of date' lenses. The result is magnificent.

In the movie itself it's astonishing to see some of Turner's most
famous paintings depicted in 'real life', so to speak. I even
recognized a couple from the Turner exhibit I wen to at the National
Maritime Museum in Greenwich last year.

I do have a question: what software/app did you use to do the map

need a good app to make similar trip routes.

Thanks for the kind comments, Christine. Part 2 will be up almost

The last SF Photo Meet I attended had a mixed presentation of film and digital
projection. Top of the line Leitz Pradovit slide projector, a midrange Epson
digital projector.

There was absolutely no comparison: anything projected with the Epson blew away
the image quality of the slides completely. As a matter of fact, the quality
was so much better that they decided that in the future, all images submitted
for the Meets would have to be submitted as digital images.

I keep the M4-2 loaded and ready to shoot with XP2 Super. Makes it easy because
I can get the processing done pretty much anywhere. Scanning is a bit easier

Ok, film is alive and well, and complementing digital use. Very interesting.
The one thing I really miss which digital just doesn't give me the pleasure
of, is 35mm transparency film and it will that that I will go for. I
couldn't find any a few years back, but now it is there I would like to see
how it compares again with digital - not just in terms of the end result,

People allergic to subtitles will hate it for that reason alone. It's

Thanks for all the replies.

It's been a very interesting time for me recently, looking through the
slides I took in pre-*ist D days. That came out in 2003 (I think), and
from
the article on digital v film in 2008, we had at that stage reached the
same
'quality of image' as film. So 7 years on in 2015, everyone should
consider

that film is of the past in every respect.

Not one of you said so.

I also have looked at images taken and enlarged made with DSLRs built
before

2010 and been mightily impressed. That, in great part is down to the
photographer of course, regardless of media.

Now for me, digital photography means I get to take the pictures as I
always
did, but now get I do the darkroom bit as well without the inconvenience
of

having lots of chemicals, equipment and a dark room. It also means I can
deal with exposure issues - but those who shot film and developed it
themselves could deal with that too.

I see cameras being launched with larger and larger sensors, to record
greater and greater detail, which therefore entails the use of better and
newer lenses to capture this greater detail, and it seems an arms race to
nowhere, as they still aren't 'better' than enlargements made from film
shot

with 30 year old glass. I just have this nagging feeling that I'm being
pushed to buy products which fill a need that doesn't exist.

Now for many people, especially professional photographers, digital
(DSLR/'Phone/CSC/whatever) is a way of taking the images and instantly
passing them on to press/Twitter/Facebook etc and immediate publication
has

become part of society's expectation of this technology. As a hobbyist
photographer, I can't help thinking that the K3 is - in real terms - as
good

as I need it to get digital image quality at this price point, with the
lenses I have (or are currently) available.

I don't feel film is in anyway dead, 12 years after the launch of a Pentax
digital camera, and if anything, I'm more tempted to find where I can buy
film and get a film body rather than join the digital arms race. The new
FF

camera is an LX.

Is more really better? Hmm.

Re: 35mm film v 35mm DSLR

2015-02-08 Thread Ken Waller

Which produces better photos and print quality, 35 mm film cameras or
35 mm DSLR cameras?

I believe DSLR's produce better photos & print quality for the simple reason
you know on site, via the histogram, whether you have obtained the optimum
exposure for a given situation - no more waiting till after development of
the film to find out if you got it right. No such mechanism exists for film.

a)...With the K-5 IIs I find that on TAv mode the camera selects 1200 ASA
or more.

Then maybe you should be using selecting the ASA yourself.

b) Film was more forgiving producing usable photos with under or over
exposure.

Really ? I find with RAW capture this isn't an issue.

c) Shadow areas held more detail.
I've taken prints from film, captured the image digitally and was able to
get more detail than was on the print - admittedly I didn't personally
process the film.

f) Since I never made prints larger than 10 x 8 inches I can't say much on

I've never seen a side by side comparison of a projected slide vs a digital
projection of the same image, but the digital projections I've seen on
quality projectors leaves nothing to be desired IMO.

Subject: 35mm film v 35mm DSLR

Which produces better photos and print quality, 35 mm film cameras or
35 mm DSLR cameras? An intriguing question Malcom Sir.
I know some old farts say that the vinyl record produces better music
than the CD.

I have observed the following:
a) I could take street shots at night fairly well with 400 ASA color
film with the ME Super hand held. With the K-5 IIs I find that on TAv
mode the camera selects 1200 ASA or more.
b) Film was more forgiving producing usable photos with under or over
exposure.

c) Shadow areas held more detail.
d) There was that magic pop to color even though slightly muted on film
cameras.

f) Since I never made prints larger than 10 x 8 inches I can't say
much on this. But remember blowing up projections from slide films on
the wall with amazing clarity. I used a Leica SLR then.

Alas I went with technology and find DSLRs are getting better and
better. Let's hope Ricoh - Pentax gives us a great Full Frame DSLR.
Regards.
Bipin

I never inhaled either.

I was tempted to load my M3 with Tri-X for my day trip to Paris a few weeks
ago, but when I thought through the hassle of developing and scanning and

A few years ago I looked on line and in magazines to get film when I last had a
film body and it was very difficult; mostly old stock and/or short dated film.

I looked today, and it was like looking ten years ago. Plentiful supplies, even
E6 long dated fresh supplies.

Something has changed and I guess it must be demand for it. Are there more of
you who still use film out there?

The concept of corporate successor says you're wrong. Besides, the
Pentax engineers and manufacturing facilities are now a large part of
Ricoh imaging. So even though Asahi Optical, (later Pentax), has

Re: Full-Framer Coming

2015-02-08 Thread George Sinos
Well - This is probably nit-picking, but I would say Cotty's
prediction was correct.

Pentax isn't making a full-frame camera. They never did and they no
longer exist, so they never will.

Ricoh is making a full frame camera with Pentax brand name stamped on it.

I was not around to hear the original statement or conditions thereof,
but I wish I was Cotty because it would be very easy to turn this into
a viral fundraiser that would PAY for most, if not all, of Cotty's
copy of the fullframe Pentax. All that needs to be done is to tell the
story (on a web page and YouTube video and link to a donation button
for those wishing to see Cotty eating a hat). This could easily go
"viral" in the Pentax community, if not beyond. It would only take
$3000 people contributing $1 to raise more than enough for the body. I
can see a line of baseball caps and t-shirts growing from this
potentially, as well.

I also have some ideas for the easy consumption of said hat.

RE: 35mm film v 35mm DSLR

2015-02-08 Thread Malcolm Smith
Thanks for all the replies.

It's been a very interesting time for me recently, looking through the
slides I took in pre-*ist D days. That came out in 2003 (I think), and from
the article on digital v film in 2008, we had at that stage reached the same
'quality of image' as film. So 7 years on in 2015, everyone should consider
that film is of the past in every respect.

Not one of you said so.

I also have looked at images taken and enlarged made with DSLRs built before
2010 and been mightily impressed. That, in great part is down to the
photographer of course, regardless of media.

Now for me, digital photography means I get to take the pictures as I always
did, but now get I do the darkroom bit as well without the inconvenience of
having lots of chemicals, equipment and a dark room. It also means I can
deal with exposure issues - but those who shot film and developed it
themselves could deal with that too.

I see cameras being launched with larger and larger sensors, to record
greater and greater detail, which therefore entails the use of better and
newer lenses to capture this greater detail, and it seems an arms race to
nowhere, as they still aren't 'better' than enlargements made from film shot
with 30 year old glass. I just have this nagging feeling that I'm being
pushed to buy products which fill a need that doesn't exist.

Now for many people, especially professional photographers, digital
(DSLR/'Phone/CSC/whatever) is a way of taking the images and instantly
passing them on to press/Twitter/Facebook etc and immediate publication has
become part of society's expectation of this technology. As a hobbyist
photographer, I can't help thinking that the K3 is - in real terms - as good
as I need it to get digital image quality at this price point, with the
lenses I have (or are currently) available.

I don't feel film is in anyway dead, 12 years after the launch of a Pentax
digital camera, and if anything, I'm more tempted to find where I can buy
film and get a film body rather than join the digital arms race. The new FF
camera is an LX.

Is more really better? Hmm.

Malcolm (Heretic)
