Re: PENTAX ZOOM lenses with aperture ring?
I don't really have any experience with any of the 24-50mm, when I was in my lens collecting phase I eschewed, zooms for the most part. So while I have lots of classic lenses, I only have a very limited number of zooms and no 25-50 among them. I only know what I've read. However I have often been tempted by the smc F 24-50 expecially if it's anything like the F 35-70. Not the ones that are mentioned in the article. However there are many 'frankenoptions'. I've bought a Rodenstock 100mm f/1.6 X-ray optic and adapted it to K-mount. I know there are similar optics in the 50-60mm range sporting f/0.9 or thereabouts. Fun fad for macros like this: https://flic.kr/p/ru6qr3 Josrein Den 8. juni 2015 23.47.58 CEST, skrev "Daniel J. Dan, Of course you know that was Lee's family home and lands. Arlington National Cemetery was established there after/during the civil war as punishment for Lee, so it looked out on the war dead. Re: How do the 50/1.4 and the 55/1.4 compare
I'm more than pleased with the IQ of both my 1970's atomic S-M-C 50/1.4 and the DA* 55/1.4, but the DA* gives it just enough more magic as to be well worth the expense to me. For one thing the aperture blades are curved such that from f/1.4 through f/4.0 the aperture is a perfect circle and the oof areas are just that much creamier with smooth transitions. I don't give a rat's ass about the other technical measurements that the lens weenies do. It's how painterly can I get a portrait to look that matters to me. You've seen that recent shot of Dorrie seated in a red sweater. _That_ speaks volumes about what the 55 does. Some folks are pretty much jizzing themselves over it. :) On Tue, Jun 9, 2015 at 1:30 PM, Larry Colen wrote: > I know that the DA* 55/1.4 is far more modern in construction than the > 50/1.4, but in terms of image quality how do the two of them compare? > > -- > Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (postbox on min4est) > > -- > PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List > PDML@pdml.net > http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and > follow the directions. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: How do the 50/1.4 and the 55/1.4 compare
I don't know from personal experience, however, Photozone has reviews of both lenses, (shot with a K10D), they don't take into account sample variation, but, though it's often mentioned, few do. Here are the pages for what they're worth. http://www.photozone.de/pentax/471-pentax_55_14 http://www.photozone.de/pentax/126-pentax-smc-fa-50mm-f14-review--lab-test-report I expect that in actual use the biggest difference is that the AOV for the 55 is ~85mm E while the 50mm is ~75mm E. That seems to matter a lot to some people. Personally while I like 85mm on 35mm film, I find the difference between 75mm and 85mm to be too small to worry about. Which is one of the reasons to use Copper, it oxidizes to the green/blue patina, then stops. Most find the color pleasant, while at the same time minimizing maintenance. I expect that the new lamps are black enamel and gold leaf, which will require periodic cleaning polishing and renewal to continue to look good. Re: GESO: Julian High, 1975 to 1980
Paul, I really enjoyed the story and the gallery. In the teaching business one never knows how one has influenced somebody; occasionally they let you know years later, but usually not. I was the photo editor of my high school yearbook (class of 1970), and shot tons of 35mm and 120 Tri-X, including lots of football games. Alas the negatives were deemed the property of the school, so all I have is the yearbook itself. Cheers, Rick http://photo.net/photos/RickW On Mon, Jun 8, 2015 at 5:33 AM, Carlos R. wrote: > Thanks for showing those pictures, Paul. The administration and the largely white staff didn’t know what to do, the school was out of control and on fire frequently and, at one point, the National Guard had to be called in. In 1975 the federal government mandated faculty integration, meaning that if you were a white teacher at a school that had too many white teachers and you wanted to transfer to a school that had too many black teachers, they had to allow you to apply for a position. I had heard about Julian. It was an all-black school on the south side of Chicago. It wasn’t a white school that had re-segregated but rather a brand new school that a prosperous middle class black community had fought for. I ap > > plied, the principal approved it, and the largely black staff welcomed me > and several other Austin teachers with open arms. I had some great classes and some wonderful kids at Julian. I taught Honors English 3 and a special double-period Humanities class. The kids and I went to the Chicago Symphony, the opera and a number of theatrical presentations. We had a great marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders. All in the mid 70s when the white kids in the suburban schools were thumbing their noses at those kind of things. We also had a fabulous football team, and in 1979 we became the first public school in almost 20 years to win a city championship over the predominantly white catholic league schools. I documented much of my time at Julian on film. I have several thousand transparencies and BW negs that I shot during those five happy years. I’ve just begun scanning some of them. I started with that 1979 football championship, but I have many more that I will eventually scan. In March of 1980 I was offered a job in New York at Hearst Magazine Division. The Chicago Board of Education had run out of money and had stopped paying the teachers. We were on the picket line when I got the call. I crossed the line, walked into the office to turn in my resignation on Thursday afternoon, March 7, 1980 and flew to New York the next morning. I still feel guilty. Today, Julian is still somewhat better than the other Southside Chicago High Schools, but the magic is largely gone. The entire south side of Chicago is a mess. The gangs are in control, and kids are shot on the street every day. A number of Julian kids have been killed on their way home from school. It’s had for me to imagine. It’s heartbreaking. Re: June PUG is up!! (Darren)
It was merely a quibble, Jack. Shorelines can be deceptive measures of "level" since the may "fall away" from you or bend closer. In any event, I tend to think of off-kilter in terms of degrees of rotation, since that is normally how I try to fix mine in Photoshop. I sometimes make use of the selection rectangle to drag horizontal and vertical line checkers where I want to see if something is out of whack. Quick and easy and you can move the selection area around with arrow keys if you want a perfect alignment with some part of your image.
