Re: PENTAX ZOOM lenses with aperture ring?

2015-06-09 Thread P.J. Alling
I don't really have any experience with any of the 24-50mm, when I was
in my lens collecting phase I eschewed, zooms for the most part. So
while I have lots of classic lenses, I only have a very limited number
of zooms and no 25-50 among them. I only know what I've read. However
I have often been tempted by the smc F 24-50 expecially if it's anything
like the F 35-70.

Dhe DA* is sharper but has more nervous bokeh. The amount of difference
does change with the lens. The DA* is actually fairly close to the K50/1.4.

Referring to http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/technology/summary/index.html

Not FAJ, DA or DFA, which leaves any of K, M, A, F, FA which have rings.

Looking for those on this page
http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/lenses/zooms/short/index.html
gives you:
F 17-28/3.5-4.5 Fish-Eye
FA 20-35/4 AL (I think this is meant to be good)
M 24-35/3.5
M 24-50/4
A 24-50/4
F 24-50/4
FA 24-90/3.5-4.5 AL [IF]

I stopped @ 24mm, that's probably already longer than you want.

Is that an artifact of them moving around in a long exposure?

Very cool! Like I said - my experience with poinsettias is that they are
in pots covered with gold or red foil and distributed around the winter
holidays. I've made a few attempts to nurse them along through the year
but they always have died. AMazing to see them growing naturally and in
such abundance!

Yes, Bob, I have been aware of that fact since elementary school.

More recently, I wades through Michael Korda's monumental hagiography
of Lee, which I recommend for those who love Lee, those who know
little about him, and those, like me who consider him one of history's
most egregious scoundrels. He is perhaps the closest thing America
ever had to royalty, at least until JFK.

Not the ones that are mentioned in the article. However there are many

Re: How do the 50/1.4 and the 55/1.4 compare

2015-06-09 Thread Bruce Walker
I'm more than pleased with the IQ of both my 1970's atomic S-M-C
50/1.4 and the DA* 55/1.4, but the DA* gives it just enough more magic
as to be well worth the expense to me.

For one thing the aperture blades are curved such that from f/1.4
through f/4.0 the aperture is a perfect circle and the oof areas are
just that much creamier with smooth transitions.

I don't give a rat's ass about the other technical measurements that
the lens weenies do. It's how painterly can I get a portrait to look
that matters to me. You've seen that recent shot of Dorrie seated in a
red sweater. _That_ speaks volumes about what the 55 does. Some folks
are pretty much jizzing themselves over it. :)

2015-06-09 Thread P.J. Alling
I don't know from personal experience, however, Photozone has reviews of
both lenses, (shot with a K10D), they don't take into account sample
variation, but, though it's often mentioned, few do. Here are the pages
for what they're worth.

http://www.photozone.de/pentax/471-pentax_55_14

http://www.photozone.de/pentax/126-pentax-smc-fa-50mm-f14-review--lab-test-report

I expect that in actual use the biggest difference is that the AOV for
the 55 is ~85mm E while the 50mm is ~75mm E. That seems to matter a lot
to some people. Personally while I like 85mm on 35mm film, I find the
difference between 75mm and 85mm to be too small to worry about.

Which is one of the reasons to use Copper, it oxidizes to the green/blue

Paul, I really enjoyed the story and the gallery. In the teaching
business one never knows how one has influenced somebody; occasionally
they let you know years later, but usually not.

I was the photo editor of my high school yearbook (class of 1970), and
shot tons of 35mm and 120 Tri-X, including lots of football games.
Alas the negatives were deemed the property of the school, so all I
have is the yearbook itself.

I had some great classes and some wonderful kids at Julian. I taught
Honors English 3 and a special double-period Humanities class. The kids and
I went to the Chicago Symphony, the opera and a number of theatrical
presentations. We had a great marching band, majorettes and cheerleaders.
All in the mid 70s when the white kids in the suburban schools were
 thumbing
their noses at those kind of things. We also had a fabulous football team,
and in 1979 we became the first public school in almost 20 years to win a
city championship over the predominantly white catholic league schools.

I documented much of my time at Julian on film. I have several thousand
transparencies and BW negs that I shot during those five happy years. I’ve
just begun scanning some of them. I started with that 1979 football
championship, but I have many more that I will eventually scan.

In March of 1980 I was offered a job in New York at Hearst Magazine
Division. The Chicago Board of Education had run out of money and had
stopped paying the teachers. We were on the picket line when I got the
 call.
I crossed the line, walked into the office to turn in my resignation on
Thursday afternoon, March 7, 1980 and flew to New York the next morning. I
still feel guilty. Today, Julian is still somewhat better than the other
Southside Chicago High Schools, but the magic is largely gone. The entire
south side of Chicago is a mess. The gangs are in control, and kids are
shot on the street every day. A number of Julian kids have been killed on
their way home from school. It’s had for me to imagine. It’s heartbreaking.

Here are the first of my Julian scans. The way it was 40 years ago.

Re: June PUG is up!! (Darren)

2015-06-09 Thread Darren Addy
It was merely a quibble, Jack. Shorelines can be deceptive measures of
"level" since the may "fall away" from you or bend closer. In any
event, I tend to think of off-kilter in terms of degrees of rotation,
since that is normally how I try to fix mine in Photoshop. I sometimes
make use of the selection rectangle to drag horizontal and vertical
line checkers where I want to see if something is out of whack. Quick
and easy and you can move the selection area around with arrow keys if
you want a perfect alignment with some part of your image.

Re: June PUG is up!! (Darren)

2015-06-09 Thread Jack Davis
Darren,
You mentioned the "off level" far shore line of Tahoe Silhouette and I blew it
off as a largely insignificant
optical illusion.
Not true. I checked a full screen image and made, easily, a 1/4" correction.
Thanks you, Darren!

I had to go back and look at the June PUG again after all the comments
about Ken's "The Lake - Lake Superior". It is indeed an image worthy
of the kudos. When converting it to digital I believe I would have
done a slight image rotation to correct the vertical lines. Similarly,
I thought Jack Davis' "Tahoe Silhouette" is a fetching image with my
only niggle being that the distant shoreline seems a bit off level.

A highlight of the trip was the gathering in Oxfordshire, pub lunch, and

A small sampling of the many pics I took is here:

Beautiful photography Rick. It was great to see you and Joy - apologies
for not spending more time with you all. I had very little time to get
familiar with the video camera before I was off! In fact I have just
returned from a hectic 10 days sailing up the Bohuslan coast from
Goteburg to Oslo, filming the trip. All went well and I'm back on dry
land (albeit with 'shore-sickness' !) now and organising and ingesting
the video. And a phone call from a major client this morning to do an
instructional DVD on plastics welding. It never stops!

Cheers

Would you rather spend the day sitting silently beside a telephone that
never rings, with nothing to do but watch your equipment depreciate?

Hi all,

Encouraged by Bruce, here I'm going to explain my ongoing photo
project with Giulia. First, she's not a model. She's a dancer &
choreographer, and that's essential to understand the concept of the
project. It is called 'Lost Dreams, Found Dreams'. What we are doing
here is more or less the following:
We do several shooting sessions in very different environments (wheat
field, clay lake, clothing store, studio, etc.) and each of them is
seen as a different dream of mine.
As you know, dreams depend on you but you cannot take true control of
them... that's the same with Giulia. I arrange the shooting, but then
she takes her freedom to move & change the way she behaves there. She
never stays still... moments and situations come and go and vanish,
just like dreams. And I try & shoot them like fixing a dream when you
awake before it's gone forever.

At the end, we will get a photo exhibition, and much more.
In fact, Giulia will also create a solo choreography inspired by the
feelings, the movements and the situations she experienced in the
different photo shootings. Then she will perform that solo in a dance
festival here in Italy on September 12, dancing through the printed
pictures on show and then also behind and in front of a screen where
other pics will be projected onto. That show will be the opening
event of the festival, with me on stage shooting her performence. So
photo & dance will merge once again, in an endless loop. Exciting,
isn't it?

And now, a few sample pics:

Congratulations.

With the background you provided, they all make perfect sense
in addition to their being very good photos each.

Let's hope it gets better reviews, and a bigger audience, than this
star-studded new blockbuster, which the Guardian calls 'pure cinematic
