RE: PESO: Cabinet of Mysteries

It's a record card cabinet, for storing standard 6x3" record cards. Often found
in libraries, using the Dewey classification to keep a record of the books. It
has pull-out shelves in the middle, so you can take an entire drawer out and
riffle through the cards.

Mince pie... It's been getting harder and harder to find mince pies
around here but this year I found one that actually included meat - in

We pretty much match you for that.

I never work between Christmas and New Year (with one exception).
This year my wife chose to take a couple of weeks off to recharge
after a hectic last few months of the year, so we spent the whole
two weeks just lazing around the house doing nothing much except
playing games or watching movies.

We don't have any family out here (my brother lives in Texas, but
apart from that almost all our relatives are back in England), so
Christmas day itself isn't a big thing. We do still cook ourselves
a traditional turkey dinner, and we make lots of other nice items
(mince pies, veal ham and egg pie, Dundee cake, etc.) to snack on
during the off-work break.

On New Year's Eve we did consume a bottle of champagne-in-all-but-
name over the course of the evening, but we didn't bother to stay
up until midnight.

One of the things that I find enjoyably ironic, especially in these days of
anti-Muslim frenzy, is that many of our traditional Christmas foods, including
mince pies, derive from Middle-Eastern recipes that the Crusaders brought back
with them. In Morocco you can still eat wonderful dishes like b'stilla, which
is delicious, and to me is very reminiscent of mince pie as you've described it.

Re: PESO: Cabinet of Mysteries Explained

2016-01-02 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Dan,

What is the "library card catalog"? ;-)
Does it have Ctrl-F in it or can you just google it? ;-)
:D

It sounds along the lines of "LP records", "DIALING a phone",
"TAPING a conversation/interview", ...

Actually, many science students (including graduate ones), when asked to
do a literature search start with googling first, instead of going to a
dedicated bibliographic engine, like Web of Science or INSPEC.

(And, unfortunately, some even stop there...)

But, on another hand, the fuzzy search implemented by Google, sometimes
helps finding some results based on vague information.

Around 1992-1993, I heard this story from a friend-librarian. She saw some
inter-library request form that went through a bunch of major
international libraries (in the US and Europe) without much of success:
they couldn't find the source requested. At the Russian State Library (the
national library located in Moscow, that used to be called "Lenin State
Public library of the USSR"), which by the function is similar to the US
Library of Congres in the US, they found the source. The reason for
success was that in 1992-1993, they were still using manual catalog
search in Moscow, and the human essentially performed a "fuzzy search",
while the computer-based catalog searches performed at other major
libraries in the world failed.

BTW, I had fun looking at your photo.

Igor

The "Cabinet of Mysteries" in my earlier PESO was indeed a library

one in my PESO is a relic, saved and now used to catalog the back
issues of The Daily Dartmouth, the student newspaper of my alma mater,
which is America's oldest college newspaper, published continuously
since August 27, 1799.

In my day, the main hall of Baker Library at Dartmouth was crammed
with hundreds of these cabinets, all overflowing with index cards
containing information on the more than 1,000,000 volumes kept in the
stacks and special collections. I spent many hours searching through
the cards, especially when working on my thesis.

This is what that main hall looks like today:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18151516

To me, it appears almost vacant, compared to the days when one could
hardly move between the catalog card cabinets.

Most young people today would have no idea how to use a library card
catalog.

Re: Geso: photos taken with Pentax mount glass on full frame, camera

2016-01-02 Thread Donald Guthrie
Thanks for the looking, Mark C. I tend to agree so far with your
projected use of FF vs APSC. I do not have a FF macro or even long tele
to do any close-up work. Birding might be great with a FF Pentax &
Paul's new lens, & futile with the Sony A7. In passing, Leica has a new
mirror-less "sports" camera at their usual pricing. It offers one lens-
a 28-90 for sports???

Nice collection of images, Don. I really like the first set - the snowy
scenes.

In many ways I like the effect of the crop factor but will be interested
in seeing how the FF works. I wonder if APS-C will still be the way to
go for macros and telephoto work, while full frame would have the
advantage with landscapes and general shooting. In any case, it's good
to see that the old FF pentax glass seems to hold up well.

PESO: Cabinet of Mysteries Explained

2016-01-02 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
The "Cabinet of Mysteries" in my earlier PESO was indeed a library
card catalog cabinet, as Paul and others noted. It was were all
research was done, back before library books became computerized. The
one in my PESO is a relic, saved and now used to catalog the back
issues of The Daily Dartmouth, the student newspaper of my alma mater,
which is America's oldest college newspaper, published continuously
since August 27, 1799.

Most young people today would have no idea how to use a library card catalog.

For me, the colour one better matches the mood of the passer-by, who

And for some reason the passer-by lack of focus bothers me in the b
but not in the colour. Dunno why.

Love the shot anyway.

good!

One of the things I found strange when I visited the US in 2013 was the
total absence of savoury-type pies.

In Aus & NZ, every bakery in every town will have a selection of meat
pies - basic steak, steal & mushroom. steak & onion, chicken, etc. The
better bakeries will have speciality selections - I've seen goat, camel,
buffalo, smoked salmon, kangaroo & crocodile, for example.

I'm not a big pie eater but I would have killed for an occasional steak
pie for lunch during our travels around the South-west.

Different cultures - different cuisines...

This year my wife chose to take a couple of weeks off to recharge

playing games or watching movies.

On New Year's Eve we did consume a bottle of champagne-in-all-but-

Mark,
Wikipedia says "There is currently no effective treatment or cure for
akinetopsia."

My first impression was it was created to be viewed with the 3D glasses.
It indeed has a feel of some impressionist painters. (I am thinking about
one particular artist, but couldn't think who... Maybe Monet? With his
"Vetheuil in the Fog", "Springtime", "Study of a Figure Outdoors: Woman
with a Parasol, facing left", "In the garden"?)

But this is not quite my "cup of champaign". :-)
And that's even for the listed paintings of Monet (I prefer some others).
Though, I enjoyed most of your other images on thumblr (or probably all of
them) much more.

The one from 1977 stands out. It looks like a shot from a movie
("Back to the future" or something like that).
I like the facial expressions of the target couple in it.
I am surprised that with a 1-second exposure, the rest of the couples
aren't blurred more. Maybe your flash was too strong.

Thanks for sharing!

Bruce,

It is nice that it is in B: one cannot see the blood dripping from where
the limbs were sawed off. :-)

On a serious note, - I enjoy the facial expression in combination with the
upper body and how it was captured (light, etc.).

The well-lit "front" leg is the main distraction for me here.
And the way how the rest of this leg and the hand (arm) are very-similarly
cut off by framing -adds to that distraction.

I tried to "reframe" it by making it a square, - with the horizontal line
at the bottom just below the top of her "back" knee, and the vertical cut
on the left being close to the elbow improved the focus on the face.

Well, that's my look at it.

BTW, the second image of Rachel in this set (23505320634) is better, more
flattering than the 3rd one (24075581775).

I would chop off the head on the left in the B photo, probably making

by the inflection point (shoulder-neck).

I enjoyed the 3rd photo (with the flag) - that is a fun one and well done.

The partial faces in the 2nd is an unfortunate distraction.

Larry,

I like the B one, and the toasting lady.
However, IMHO, both would benefit from a crop, especially the latter one.
I see it in a 5x5 format (or, maybe 4x4 :-) ) where the (wierd-looking)
guy is mostly or completely cut off.

Meaning that you suggest a square crop, rather than that is what appears
on your screen?

I would chop off the head on the left in the B photo, probably making
that photo into a square one as well, or at least not as wide one... maybe
by the inflection point (shoulder-neck).

I enjoyed the 3rd photo (with the flag) - that is a fun one and well done.

The partial faces in the 2nd is an unfortunate distraction.
I'd play with cropping there, but it looks like it would be hard to make
it working well.

I guess it must be an acquired taste.

In the US, mince pies are found mostly in New England. They usually

That is a fine and fun photo, John!
It feels almost B with a color accent in it.
But it is probably best kept the way it is (without that masked conversion to
B), - because here
it is clear that the umbrella was there, it is not colored in the post.

Another successful photo

I just discovered I took an honorable mention in the Appalachian
Mountain Club photo contest for this year. It's the 9th photo in the
collection at
http://www.outdoors.org/publications/outdoors/2016/web/21st-annual-amc-photo-contest.cfm
...but you can also see it on my own web site at
http://www.robertstech.com/pages/fotoblog/7db01000.htm

Unfortunately, this honor doesn't pay anything other than... honor, I
suppose, but it's a fiercely competitive photo contest so that's
enough for me. :-)

I'm really sorry to hear that John. Being so far away must have been
