Long time no see, and ramping up for an FS Friday (K5 and 16-50 for starters)

2017-01-06 Thread Charles Robinson
Howdy, folks! I used to be on this list and things got busy/weird and I
left about a year or two ago...

I came to the realization a while ago that since getting into the Olympus
OM-D line, I've not used my Pentax gear for ages - almost a couple of
years, actually.

It pains me to watch my K5 and lenses just rot in a bag - is there *any*
resale value on an original, "well-loved" K-5 body? And what's the current
state of opinion on the 16-50? (But if each are only a couple hundred,
I'll probably just tuck the big ol' bag of gear into a cabinet and let 'em
sit there...)

I just checked KEH.com and they have a plain old K-5 in stock for a bit
over $300. The 16-50 isn't listed but they're still manufactured and
KEH generally sells them for about 10-20% less than retail new for EX
condition. So if you bought it before the recent price increase you
can probably get almost what you paid for it.I've been told by the
local camera shop that they price their used gear based on KEH's prices.

Re: macro lens

2017-01-06 Thread Mark C
I considered getting one of those but after thinking it over decided not
to - I can't see what niche it would fill.

The infinity to 2:1 sounds ideal for a field macro lens where you might
want ot quickly work different subjects at widely different levels of
magnification. But to me that is offset bu the lens not being A
compatible which not only hinders the ability to meter quickly but also
limits any auto modes and use of TTL flash. Plus, 60mm is not ideal IMO
for field macro work.

In the studio the stop down metering / manual flash would not be an
issue and the 2x magnification would probably be more useful, but then
its really easy to get high magnifications in the studio from standard
lenses or enlarger lenses or whatever. The ability to focus to 2x would
be great, but there is less need for infinity focus (unless you have a
really big studio).

As cool as the lens sounds I could not see how I could really take
advantage of the inifinty to 2x feature.

The final coffin nail for me is that I already have a DFA 50mm f2.8
which is an excellent lens. It might be a somewhat different story if I
did not already have that (and a few other really excellent 50mm lenses).

That's actually been diagnosed by the "internet", apparently there's a
low power capacitor that Yongnuo has cheaped on that needs to be
replaced. That keeps the tube from firing when everything else

Yeah, I think I got it about a zillion years ago for something under $700.
The K5 has been "well loved" and would probably be listed by KEH as "fair"
or maybe even "BGN" (or even UGLY - don't know!). The 16-50 is as good as
it ever was, though, so I'll poke around a bit and see - perhaps starting
with the local shoppe is a good start, saving all the hassle of shipping
and whatnot.

In other news - I've missed this list! Perhaps I'll stick around a bit.

I do have a couple of adapters - still working out which lenses work well
with the OM-D and which do not. I'm jealous of that 85mm f1.4!

My biggest problem with adapting the old K and A lenses is that my eyes are
starting to SUCK - I'll dial the focus in, think I've got it, hit the
shutter... and later I'll see that I was MILES from being in focus. Even
using the focus peaking. Old man... (sigh)

G'day Charles

Nice to hear from you again.

By all means hang around - you wouldn't be the only one shooting other
brands. I've gone down the OMD route too (just bought an E-M5ii to add
to my E-M10) but I still like to drag out the K-5 from time to time.
It's still a great camera - these days, just a bit too heavy to lug it

I'm hanging on to my Pentax gear waiting for the mythical and

Re: Another test - Pixel Shift

2017-01-06 Thread Brian Walters
Interesting comparisons. I see a small but noticeable improvement in
detail in Image 3 compared with image 1.

If I recall correctly, Ricoh's implementation of pixel shift produces
images with the same pixel dimensions as a 'normal' image but with
increased detail. This contrasts with the Olympus implementation which
produces images about 4 times (in area) that of the 'normal' file. I
just bought an E-M5 MkII but I'm yet to test its pixel shift capability.
I'm not sure it's something I'd use often anyway.

Where I really notice the difference is in reds, flowers especially.

I'm surprised Lightroom does a crappy job with them, Photoshop does OK

This was a 25 or so pixel shift stack that I think worked pretty well.
The reds blew a bit when I changed the profile to sRGB, in Prophoto they
are good.

http://users.accesscomm.ca/wrphoto/photos/index.html#/view/ID612608

You will take best advantage of pixel shift with images that are fully
in focus, which is why I do so many stacks, and where there is no
movement, though there is a motion correction setting that may help.

The green artifacting is weird, it appears to only be infecting the

There's noting wrong with the concept, the execution however of it has

Re: Lisbon Jeronimos Monastery

2017-01-06 Thread Stanley Halpin
Nice. It seems a bit dark and lacking contrast on my screen, but I think that
is due to my cataracts which are slowly developing…

I am having a hard time reconciling the notion of monastery with such an
opulant setting. Aren’t monastery’s about humble and self-effacing and retreat
from the world?

I have been many places but so far mainland Portugal is not on my list. I think
I would like to spend some time in Lisbon one of these days…

interesting Charles — i'm in almost exactly the same position — K-5 and a

i've been using an E-M1 with three main lenses - Panasonic 20/1.7, Olympus

Tha K-01 can be had really cheap on eBay these days. You might want to
try one out. I thought I'd hate it and I've come to like it a lot.

It's been a week

2017-01-06 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
Helping clean up more from wife's parent's estate. Lots of work.

Then my L4 started giving me fits. Driving is no fun.

Did find some of my old copies of Kilobaud Microcomputing from 80-82. Fun
reading.

But alas ... The 50/1.2

Anyone interested in it?

Some room to negotiate.

I have been keeping a look out on Ebay. I thought it might be fun to
pick up one for casual use but they don't come up often here and the
exchange rate & postage makes buying from the US more than I'm
comfortable with. Without a viewfinder, I can't see me using one
regularly and I'm not sold on the concept of retaining the K mount
register distance.

For the moment, I'm keeping my foot in the door of Pentax mirrorless
with the Q.

Cheers

Snowed in for the weekend?

2017-01-06 Thread John

It hasn't started snowing yet, but there's been a mixture of sleet &
freezing rain for several hours now. I'm taking a break from working
on my kitchen.

I was reading Petapixal about mixing ambient light with flash for more
pleasing portraits. But he was shooting at 1/2000 of a second which got
me thinking about sync speeds. I'm not sure if he was using High Speed
Sync or not, but I thought about leaf shutter lenses that will "sync" at
any speed.

Pentax made a leaf shutter 90mm f/2.8 lens for the Pentax67. They also
made an adapter so you can use Pentax67 lenses on 35mm Pentax SLRs.

Would the Pentax67 leaf shutter lens mounted on the 67 Adapter K work
with Pentax DSLRs?

Here's what the kitchen looks like at the moment.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/32004605762/in/photostream/lightbox/

The old plaster walls were 3/4" thick, so I'm having to make the new
drywall the same thickness to avoid having to shave down the window &
door frames. I'm making it the necessary thickness by putting in two
layers of 3/8" drywall. I bought enough drywall board to cover two walls
high enough to back the base cabinets

I've got my drywall inside, out of the weather & I've got a dry porch
where I can make the necessary cuts.

The first layer has a strip 24" wide along the bottom with a full 48"
width piece on top of it. The second layer has a regular 48" wide sheet
on the bottom. That offsets the joints for the two layers & gives me
enough wall in place I can start setting the base cabinets once the
weather clears up enough I can get out to the building materials store.

I added insulation in the exterior walls & additional electrical
outlets. I only had two duplex outlets, one behind the refrigerator &
one GFI for all my small appliances. The double outlet shown is
protected by the GFI. The new kitchen will have two double outlets plus
the original GFI serving the counter space.

I've still got to knock down the plaster on the old wall to the left &
install new drywall. You can see the outline of the old cabinets behind
the level & T-square. Not shown off the left is the door-frame where
I'll tie the new drywall into the existing plaster wall, another reason
I have to go 3/4" thick.

Since I knew I was going to tear the plaster out, I used it for various
notes & drawings to keep track of what I was having to do.

I will still have to finish off the upper part of the walls & actually I
have to tear out the ceiling in this area to replace it as well. But I
already own a drywall panel lift I bought back when I was making repairs
after Hurricane Fran. Then I'll need to hang wall cabinets.

I think I'm getting close to being halfway done.

Eventually I'll try to put up a gallery of how I went about doing the
work, but not until it's finished enough I can use the kitchen again.

Macro Lens

2017-01-06 Thread Bipin Gupta
Bill: I find it's less difficult if the lens in question is not a Pentax.
Fer gawds sake, I probably have a dozen or more 50mm lenses.

Reply: A Photographer is lost with too many lenses.

Bill, pass some of you 50mm's around.

Regards.
Bipin.

PS: I am a zoom lover and have done best in my travels with the Sigma 10-20,
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (in bad weather Pentax 18-135) + the Pentax 55-300 WR.
So I am covered from 10 to 300 mm with these compact and light
weight beauties.
I have a 100mm Macro but rarely ever use it.
My least used lens is the Pentax 50mm AF - oddball on an APS-C camera.
