Unfortunately, I was in the same bind but was finally pushed over the
edge to the Canon D30 camp after having done several income-generating
jobs using a borrowed D30. Since mid last year, working with an auto
journalist friend of mine, I was published in Car Driver twice (Tokyo
Motor Show and Tokyo Auto Salon) along with a local auto rag covering a
few races. I also managed to land a few shots in the upcoming 2003 CD
desktop calendar which should cover the cost of a recently purchased,
used D30 that I can call my own.

I'm holding off buying any new L glass as long as possible, borrowing
from my brother when needed in hopes that Pentax may release their own
digital SLR at a price point/feature set at least equal the new D60.
Otherwise, the D30 fits my needs just right and hopefully I can continue
to generate additional side income from a hobby.

Tom,

I heartily agree with you there.

While I can live with less than full frame (ie. your 28-70 actually
becomes something closer to 45-112 depending on the amount you lose),
it's hard to live with a non-accurate viewfinder.

I just completed shooting stuff from the Tokyo Motor Show using a
borrowed Canon D30 and I found it hard to really compose a good shot
through the viewfinder knowing that the recorded shot will not match;
sure, I can crop on the computer but it kind of defeats the whole
purpose of being able to go from camera to presentation in a single step!

At least with consumer-grade digicams, you can frame your shot using the
LCD monitor and know that what you shoot will be what you get...

 Hello,

Thank you for writing to Lycos.

Lycos maintains a catalog of Internet sites, analogous to the white
pages of a phone book. We provide this catalog to the public as a free
information service and research tool. Due to the size and nature of
our catalog, it's not possible for us to remove individual results. As
with any Web search, Lycos claims no right to these files and directs
our users to contact the administrator of the Web site in question for
more information on the use of copyrighted photographs.

The Lycos Multimedia Search engine employs spiders that scour the
internet for rich media content, much like a regular search engine
would. My understanding is that because we are not publishing your
photos, rather we link off to your site, this is not an illegal
practice. You can find more information at:

 http://www.lycos.com/lycosinc/legal.html

To prohibit spiders from any server from accessing your site, you must
make use of the robots.txt standard. What is robots.txt? This small text
file is like a traffic cop that tells our software which parts of your
site can be examined and indexed. Ask your Web hosting company if your
site already employs this file. If not, it is a fairly simple matter to
 create your own robots.txt file.

 Ditto.com wins image copyright case
Ruling may have sweeping implications for search engines
By Elliot Zaret mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] MSNBC

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 17 - In a case that may have sweeping implications
for search engines of all kinds, a federal judge in California has ruled
that a "visual search engine" did not violate copyright laws by
collecting thumbnail images of photographs from the Web and displaying
them on its site. The necessity of searching the Internet outweighed any
other factor in determining whether a copyright was violated, the judge
 said.

IN JANUARY, a California photographer sued Ditto.com
http://www.ditto.com, then known as the Arriba Vista Image Searcher,
for violating her copyright by collecting and displaying 35 of her
copyrighted images on its site as search results. The Ditto search
engine works by "spidering" the Web - having a computer program collect
some two million images from any site on the Internet it can find them -
then shrinking each image down to a thumbnail image that is displayed in
the search result. The photographer argued that an image is an image and
displaying her copyrighted photographs without her permission - and
making money in the process - was effectively stealing. The U.S.
District Court judge in Santa Ana, Calif. ruled that Ditto wasn't
stealing the images. But the 15-page decision, handed down late
Thursday, was somewhat more complicated - with the judge effectively
giving a split decision on many of the relevant issues. However the
judge said that the crucial role search engines serve for users of the
Internet outweighs the other factors and makes Ditto's thumbnails "fair
use" of the images. "(The photographer's) images were swept up along
with two million others available on the Internet, as part of (Ditto's)
efforts to provide its users with a better way to find images on the
Internet," wrote the judge. "(Ditto's) purposes were and are inherently
transformative, even if its realization of those purposes was at times
imperfect. Where, as here, a new use and new technology are evolving,
the broad transformative purpose of the use weighs more heavily than the
inevitable flaws in its early stages of development." The judge also
said that thumbnails themselves - though an exact replica of the
original photos - had to be considered different from the originals
because they served an entirely different purpose. "The character of the
thumbnail index is not esthetic, but functional; it's purpose is not to
be artistic, but to be comprehensive," the judge wrote. Ditto.com's
attorney Judy Jennison, who heads the Silicon Valley Intellectual
Property Litigation Practice of Perkins Coie, said the decision
validates the importance of navigation tools like search engines on the
Internet. "Generally speaking, the court has realized that the Internet

Hello. I recently got the Grip Stap for my PZ-1p. It has greatly improved the
handling of the camera, at a relatively high cost. Is it possible to attach a
camera strap while the grip is attached? Thanks.

Bill,

Looks like they *definitely* are sending out the same form letter for anyone
who complains to Support.

I fired off a note in response quoting terms from their on-line TOS about
how they are supposed to act immediately upon receiving any notice of rights
of infringmement by their users stealing other content.

Funnily enough, they also list out terms about how it is illegal to poach
data from the Lycos database...

What a crazy world we live in!

It is a violation: they are using your images to sell advertising
banners. Without negotiating with you for commercial useage.

I just sent them a bill. I suggest that everyone else do it too. Make
it an extreme and unreasonable amount, and point out that it is so high
because these particular images are not for sale for commercial use.

Paal nailed that one straight on the head! Japan is very much a buy now, buy
again market regardless of the cost and especially for high-priced toys.

Not speaking for myself, but it is quite common to see top of the line
cameras from all brands being carried around by avid photo fans in Japan
(Tokyo, at least)... I see a lot of MZ-7s carried around by older men/women
probably due to its compact size but you also see older, retired men hefting
around the N/C pro bodies.

I've got a friend from Seattle coming out this weekend and it's going to be
fun to try and loosen his purse strings on some new toys... ;-)

Re: OT: Digital Pics from Tokyo Auto Salon

2001-01-12 Thread Jeff Tsai

I was shooting with a Sony Cybershot DSC-F55 and my buddy was shooting with
a Canon Powershot (3.3 megapixel model).

Though I didn't mention it yesterday, I had my first embarassing moment as a
photographer. As the layout of the floor of the show was somewhat crowded, I
took my first spill carrying my PZ-1p while talking to my buddy after
leaving a booth. Luckily, as I felt myself start to trip, I instinctively
curled my right wrist in towards my body and rolled as I fell. Bodily
contact points were my wrist and my hip so though my PZ didn't touch
anything, my Cybershot (which was in a hip case on my right side) got
obliterated...

Even though I was planning to replace the unit by early summer, I wasn't
going to do it in such an extreme fashion!

Jeff

Speaking in general terms, Japanese men are still behind on the curve on
treating women as equals in all avenues in life when compared to
Western-mentality countries.

Women (such as the ones in the show) are used purely to attract attention
and push product primarily by 1) smiling pretty and 2) baring as much skin
as possible. While Japanese society is much more tolerant about making this
public, it also has to do with the fact that society is still an extremely
male-dominant one here...

Just a statement on the way the sun shines on this side of the world when

Also, if you are reluctant to maintain a collection of prime (fixed focal

If you are a hiker and need to travel without a herd of

consider a zoom with greater range. such as a 28-200 or a 28-300.
I've had both.--- Indeed my 28-200 is being sold on Ebay as

RE: Beginners Lens Selection (was: zx-30)

2001-01-11 Thread Jeff Tsai
Robert,

Can't speak from experience over years, but in my recent experience, I would
have to agree with your point.

However, over Christmas, I received a 28-70 f4 which, despite my initial
misgivings about a lens at that price, seems to hold its own quite well! I'm
waiting for an additional 2 rolls of film to come back from Christmas/New
Year shootings but so far, I've been pleasantly surprised with the results.
The little corner(?) of the focus ring that lifts off so that you can access
the casing screws kinda bothers me but oh well...

This morning, I completed a bid on http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp for the
Tokina AT-X828 F Pro (f2.8) for a little over half the cost of new so I'm
hoping my used cost performance on the lens will be high. Yes, it's heavy
and may not be a true-blue Pentax lens, but with the FA*80-200 costing over
three times the amount I paid, I think it's worth the gamble...

Cheers,

Jeff

I guess one of my disappointments over the zooms is the fact that they
have gotten slower over the years--- almost all standardized starting
at around 4 4 on the short end and sliding to f5.6 on the long end.

To be sure pentax has some F2.8 zooms but the prices seem outlandish
making a choice of primes better in most cases.

Those that would hold an F4 over thier zoom range seem to
 have vanished.

Re: Digital is here. Film production to be stopped!

2001-01-07 Thread Jeff Tsai

Not sure what the current situation is like in the U.S., but out here in
Japan, many of the 1-hour shops and big photo houses now have personal-use
printing booths where you can take your digital camera/memory cards (in all
incarnations) in the shops alongside traditional film print machines.

As far as disposable cameras go, given how quickly new models are being
introduced, we are practically there. In fact, the latest trend now is to
combine a mini-CCD with the mobile phones to offer 'on the spot' digital
photos that can be mailed back and forth (since mobile phone ownership is
ridiculously high here). Not to mention that Sony just rolled out a
combination MP3 and mobile phone unit as well...

Re: MZ-S in a digital future

2001-01-06 Thread Jeff Tsai

Agreed! Even a couple of years would be stretching it given the rapid
development of digital technology on the consumer grade cameras. If you
trust the reviews on the Net, the new Canon D30 takes better pics and is
lower cost than the D1.

Rather than upgrading my Sony Cybershot with the Nikon Coolpix 880, I
decided to hang in there and wait until post-spring to look around (and to
see what the digital MZ-S actually looks and feels like!) before committing
any more funds to the digital world.

I'm not saying that my camera now is worthless; it still takes reasonable
quality pictures but there are units that have come out since and at lower
prices with better features that I only wish were available a year ago...

Re: What will Digital Mean?

2001-01-06 Thread Jeff Tsai

For what it's worth, there is already significant difference in picture
quality (I'm not talking resolution) even between units from the same maker.

My brother's Cybershot has a colder blue color cast to an image compared to
my older model despite shooting under the same conditions. And while neither
of the Cybershots give truly good results using a flash, my friend's 880
takes quite good pictures using the flash.

Perhaps the trend we'll see is the ability for the user to choose the type
of 'digital film processing' he/she wants (maybe pre-configure settings
defining the characteristics of said digital film before shooting) to affect
output even without the use of a computer!

To be honest, for those PS situations, I use my digital camera (an older
Sony DSC-F55 either at 1,024 x 768 or 1,600 x 1,200 resolution).

If you haven't looked at one recently, I'd recommend either the Nikon
Coolpix 880 or the Camedia 3030/3040 although the Nikon unit leans more
towards taking pictures rather than moving pictures (as can be seen from the
abscence of sound recording).
