BUT:

I have rediscovered film and much to my surprise, I can get what appears
to be a close clone of Plus-X and Tri-x at a better price. I think I
have to dig out my older pentaxes and give this a try. Also Kentmere
has a bargain ASA 100 & 400 film that is getting some good reviews. As
I get older this urge to return gets stronger.

Almost all slides film is going dodo as well.

If anyone needs such film, it may be a good idea to grab a bunch of'em.

Re: Film is dead?

2011-01-17 Thread John Graves

Paul,

I have already discovered the Leica snick. Lenses. The Cannon is a 200
mm Telyt which must be used with the Visoflex viewer/mirror assembly. It
took me a while to figure out how to put that assembly together. The
camera came with a 50mm f1.4 Summilux, 35mm f2.0 Summicron, and 135mm f4
Tele-Elmar. There is also 65mm that mounts to the Visofflex but I
haven't figured out what or why it is. Thanks... Dad. I am hoping that
my last 2 rolls of Kodachrome that I put through the Leica made it in
time for processing.

I have both a Contax II and a IIA. The II has a more fragile shutter
from what I understand and the shutter on the IIa doesn't have the
fabric bands and the curtain is aluminum. So now I don't think I ever
will have to go out looking for cameras. I just have to revert back to
B&W HI.

Film is dead?

2011-01-17 Thread John Graves
Aside from my Digital Pentax, I am the recipient of some of my Dad's
cameras. Included in the lot are a couple of Contaxes and a Leica M4.
The Tessar 50 mm is supposedly good. The M4 has an assortment of lenses
including what can either be described as a cannon or a do-it yourself
SLR. Besides, my PX-20 is feeling left out. I will have to exercise it
as well.

SoI am cosidering buying a bottle of T-Max, a bottle of rapid
fixer and a few rolls of Tri-X to use once I have shot up the ancient 4
rolls of Plus-X I found. I have a couple of Yankee tanks and a single
reel tank and what I think is a 3 reel tank. I will dump the ancient
Microdol down a convenient drain, clean the bottles and be in business,
I think. My scanner will scan 35mm negatives so I don't have to fuss
with my enlarger.

I have a few questions for the group though. If I dump the Microdol
into the town's septic system, will the Treatment Plant blow up or
otherwise stop functioning. Is there a good way to clean out the
plastic and glass (fixer) bottles or should I add to my collection?
Have I lost what's left of my mind. Do I shoot the 15? year old Plus-X
at 125, 64 32 speed? PS my LunaPro still works...I will need a source
for the PX625a cells though.

All suggestions read..some taken!

jeffery,

Xtol raises another question. I think I still have gallon brown plastic

I love Prescysol for just about everything. You mix it and discard it (highly
diluted). You can get it from Photographer's Formulary. Get a few syringes for
measuring the concentrate. I also love PMK-pyro, another highly diluted
one-shot developer, but you have to be pickier with films for that developer.

Re: B&W film home made processing... now that is cheap (+smartphone helpful apps)

2010-12-09 Thread John Graves
Now being retired, I have also given some thought to the (film) cameras
and gear that I have accumulated but don't use. So home processing
appeared on the scene. Am I better off sticking with Tri-X or has
anybody had any experience with Kentmere (sp) that is being pushed a bit
by one of the local stores. Also seeing some reports about a new to me
Kodak developer (Xtol)that is easy to use and environmentally friendly.
Given a choice I think I'd buy the small packets of D-76.

Also, I am on a septic system. I read on the web that developers and
stop baths are fairly close to vinegar and also fairly dilute. So there
is not any problems flushing them (literally.) But the fixer does
contain silver and some other potentially nasty stuff. Flush it also?
Or mix everything together and flush it. That is another suggestion I saw.

As a really secondary question, as I was inventorying my gear, I came
across a really old pack of microdol. Is there a shelf life for sealed
package of chemicals? Is microdol still available?

I've read that the NR improvement in LR3 is due to the different processor used
for the RAW files. It is the same engine (or whatever you'd call it) as they
now use in CS5.

I found this to be a good non-Adobe-based summary of the changes/improvements:

Thanks to all who have weighed in with good information. In my case,
I was suffering from a little aged brain crampitus. The lens is a
Super Tak and has its own switch for iris control, allowing for wide
open focusing when on. It was on and the DS couldn't tell so the
metering was always done at f 1.9. The second issue is that even at ISO
200, F 1.9 is way too much in the open sunThere is the crux of
it.mea culpaBut it was good brain exercise.

Be sure that the custom function 'Use Aperture Ring' is set to 'Permitted'
and set the camera to M mode. Then you have two options as to metering.

1. Use the DoF preview, this will give you a numerical readout for how far
off the currently selected exposure is, it reads out up to +/- 3 stops IIRC.
Note the readout only is accurate when DoF preview is engaged.

2. Press the AE-Lock button and the camera will stop down the lens, meter
and then set the appropriate shutter speed.

If you only care about shooting wide open or are using screwmount or preset
aperture lenses you can also use Av mode, but it will meter for wide open
only.

Most people use option 2 in this case.

Re: Manual Lens on DS

2010-03-07 Thread John Graves

Adam,

Thank you. You are confirming what I am seeing. The lens is a Super
Tak 85 MM F1.9. In the house, I can seem to get reasonable exposures
using the preview switch and the function set to manual.

Never mind. The mind needs refreshing once in a while. The lens has a
preview switch that allows focusing wide open with auto stop down or
controlling the aperture with the lens setting directly. The problem is
that even at 4000th of a second. F1.9 is going to overexpose at ISO
200. It does help to have all the controls set right.

Well, I tend to be on 80 M (3.5 MHz), 40M (7.0 MHz), and 20M (14.0
MHz).using either code or sideband. I do have 2 M (144.0) transceiver in
the car for chats on FM through several of the local repeaters. Since
you have been gone, the morse code requirement has been dropped and
there are only 3 license classes, Tech, General & Extra. The tech
license gets you on the 2 M and down to a piece of 10 M (28.0 MHz). The
other two give you access to at least a piece of all the bands with
sections reserved for the Extra license. If you have more questions, I
am happy to answer them but we outta take off forum to spare the others,

Developing Chemical Disposal

2010-03-02 Thread John Graves
I am considering developing my own B&W film. My film cameras are
beckoning. Before I do this, I would like to understand how to dispose
of the required chemicals. I would be using something like Ethol UFG on
TMax or equivalents. It looks like fixer with a simple treatment
(desilvering) is dumpable, but what about the developer and stopbath? I
am on a septic system and don't want to spoil a good system.

Any suggestions either in disposal or alternative products is welcome.

John,

Thanks for your kind wishes. Yes, It mostly missed but did enough that
we will have an adjuster visit. As others have mentioned, the important
thing is we are all right, and all else is mostly ok. My ham antenna (a
vertical aluminum pole ) was demolished but it is replaceable one way or
another and that ain't bad as the worst that got done.

Yes. I was surprised, once again, that the 3200 can actually deliver very
respectable results scanning 35mm negatives. The scans are good enough to make
nice 11 x 14 prints. A top end dedicated film scanner would, of course, be much

Re: OT?: Wireless question

2009-12-24 Thread John Graves

Dave,

I have a Verizon DSL Modem connected to a Combo Firewall/switch/wireless
access point. I am connecting all my PC's (5) except this one via
wireless with no problem. I am using an encrypted link as I can see 6
networks from here. I get strong signals anywhere in the house and
generally run at whatever speed the wireless adapter runs. Even with
the neighbors, I have not seen any issues.

Regarding the connection to the outside world, you should have a router
or firewall (depending on manufacturer or whim.) This will translate
(NAT) the public outside address to a private address. While the DSL
modem will do the translation, it doesn't do any the inspection that is
done by a firewall. This is your first line of defense. The box should
also say things like SPI (Stateful packet Inspection) which says that
the box is at least a minimal firewall. Encrypting your wireless blocks
any access from the inside as well.

Re: Photographer arrested at mall

2009-12-19 Thread John Graves
I have to add that most policeman are great people and doing things that
at times are scary as hell. They are well trained and will give you the
shirt off their backs if the circumstances call for it. Mall cops are
not policemen, although they could be wannabes. The really scary thing
is that they are licensed to carry a firearm. They have little of the
training, very little of the experience and at Holiday time are probably
overworked as well. That is not to excuse the paranoia that a lot of
people have or the exaggerated sense of their rights. Pushing back in
either case is not going to win anything. A coupla deep breaths and a
calm explanation probably gets you more, regardless of who is doing the
stopping.

Re: OT Old computers and Raw files

David,

It also could be memory. If you are running XP Pro, get as close to 3

Win7 32bit, get as close to 8 gig as you can. If you are thinking of
upgrading, check your programs for compatibility with win 64 bit of
whatever flavor. Win7 64 is a much better program that the 32 bit
version. But as usual, not all is compatible and your mileage can vary.

My Pentax sensor cleaning kit arrived today. I had a black spec on my K7D
sensor that couldn't be dislodged with my ear blower. I read the
instructions and dabbed away at the sensor with the Pentax tool. A
subsequent test showed the sensor to be perfectly clean. The Pentax sensor
cleaner seems to be an effective easy to use tool. This was the first time
in about five years of shooting with digital SLRs that I experienced dirt
that the ear blower couldn't dislodge. Good to know there's another safe and
easy alternative.

the AUTO ISO moves the ISO setting to make it happen. Interesting. I
can see why you would want to set a usable range of ISO speeds if you
were going to use this feature as it is not displayed in the eyepiece.

I just did a few test shots with the DS in Av mode. I couldn't get the
camera to set an ISO higher than 800. There seems to be a built-in
limiting ISO that is not able to be set by the user (unlike the K
bodies) and, based on your tests, the limiting ISO might be different
depending on the shooting mode set.

Actually I wasn't aware that "Auto" had been added to the *ist DS (my
second camera), so thanks for posting.

My understanding (and this could be completely wrong) is that Auto ISO
allows the camera to adjust the ISO to suit the lighting conditions.
So, if you were shooting in Av mode and set an aperture that would give
a shutter speed too low for hand holding, the ISO would be increased to
achieve an acceptable shutter speed (or as high a speed as possible).
At least that's how it seems to work with the K200D.

With the 200D (and I assume the other "K" series bodies), you can limit
the range over which the camera is allowed to increase the ISO. That
doesn't seem possible on the DS, so I assume (a lot of assumptions
here!) that the camera can adjust the ISO right up to 3200 with the AUTO
setting, if necessary.

Re: Exploring Boston: Bromfield Camera

Mark,

Welcome to Boston. There is another camera dealer in Melrose, a suburb
of Boston. They used to be Hunt Drug, but now are Hunt Photo & Video.
They sell most of the major brands but not much of Pentax,
unfortunately. They have several branch stores including Boston at 520
Commonwealth Drive. Commonwealth Drive is worth the walk or drive
anyway. A very 1920's kind of promenade.

Okay, all the improvements I can think of (including the two you mentioned)
- higher resolution
- shake reduction (this is a HUGE advantage, in my opinion)
- better noise characteristics than the older sensors (like in the DS)
- better grip
- awesome battery grip accessory (2nd battery, extra memory card storage)
- weather sealing (I've found this to be pretty important)
- better general build quality (i think)
- comes with a free helper monkey who is trained in Photoshop, but only
if you bought it new

- faster continuous shooting rate
- better buffer
- better and faster processing
- bigger LCD
- support for SDM lenses

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are
other things that could be listed.

I frequently shoot with my K10D at ISO 800 and get fabulous results,
especially compared to what I used to get with my old *istD, which was
very similar to your *istDS in most respects. The K20D does do
noticeably better when you get to ISO 1000 and above, but is that bit of
performance improvement worth the added cost? Based on what you said
above, I don't think it is.

So, I would recommend you get a used K10D. I may be selling mine next

I actually have been happy with my DS. I would like to add shake

basic. I tend to use the following: Pentax FA 20-35, Sigma 70-300 APO
and my trusty screw-mount Pentax 85 f1/9. I carry but seldom use my FA

That really depends on what you are looking for.
I'd start with a base requirement of being able to use SDM lenses,
so I believe the list would be K10D, K100D Super, K20D or K200D.
If you also want a battery grip take the K100D Super off the list.

I've been happy with my K10D, but then I'm still using a *ist-D
as my backup body (although I'm interested to see what is coming
in a few more weeks ...). I didn't feel the K20D offered enough
extras to tempt me, but you're in a different situation; are the
extra features worth enough to you to justify the extra price?

A wee dram is also defined as "a small amount of whisky", so it seems
as if your definition would be

occasional: a unit of time between 15 seconds and two minutes
a wee dram: 20-200 ccs of whisky.

I've got about 50 varieties of single malt in my collection (I was
really into the whisky tastings for a while, and don't actually drink
that much so they accumulated, especially once people started giving
me whisky as gifts) so if you were to show up, I can assure you that
you would not feel that you were being deprived of a sufficiency of
good scotch.

I could even introduce you to some ladies who enjoy blues.

Now this is beginning to sound worth the plane fare from Seattle to

That's still wrong: Lightroom isn't anything as crude as a

No one would reasonably expect to be able to use a piledriver for
tapping little tacks. A reasonable photographer *would* like
to be able
to use a tool whose desirable features are raw conversion and image
optimization for... just raw conversion and image optimization.

These are just analogies, they're not meant to be taken literally. You don't
want me to get all literal all yo ass now, do you? The point I'm obviously
struggling to make is that the right tool for one job is not necessarily the
right tool for some other job, however similar they seem. It's largely a
matter of scale - a spreadsheet versus SAP for doing accounts perhaps. If
every software development organisation tried to please everyone all the
time, no software would ever get released, and if it did it would please
nobody - anybody with experience in software development should know that.

Lightroom was designed in consultation with an awful lot of professional
photographers to do a particular job. As far as I can see it would make a
good case study in how to develop software. But like any other project it
had a scope - limits on what it would and wouldn't do. They've issued it to
great acclaim, and made changes in response to market use and further
experience. No doubt they will continue to do so, adding useful functions,
which might include what you want, but complaining about it not being able
to do something that it has never claimed to do and was apparently not
designed to do is an exercise in futility.
