Re: New of Pentax ultra-compact D-SLR based on 110

2003-01-24 Thread MPozzi
Hey!!!
I posted mail as an idea that Pentax may do something
like this (and being in line with producing small
items) I just mentioned as a possible idea and now
they are doing itI want my Intellectual copyright
fees

I also remember someone 'flaming' me for saying that
the machinery and moulds were probably not useable

...still would prefere a proper DSLR to accept my
lenses...however, a small system that size (i imagine
the battery to be in the motordrive...) can be great
even for journalism/travel...

Re: OT: Depth of Field

2002-10-17 Thread MPozzi

Hi,
I tend to choose a DOF that just begins to distinguish
what the backgroung is, espocially is I am taking a
portrait, and especially if the person is in a
surrounding that adds to that person.
I do this because having the background too much out
of focus ends up creating a 'netral backdrop' effect,
where I dent to prefer just making out rhat the
objects / people are within the frame, but keeping
them well blurred.
An example would be, on a 50mm lens, with subject say
1meter away and rest of the frame roughly 4-5 m, using
an aperture of around 5.6 or 6.7 (1/2 stop more).

Re: An (Un)educated Guess about Pentax and future Digital Single Lens Reflex Offerings

2002-10-15 Thread MPozzi

My 2 cents on Pentax and digital
It is worth seeing who is the target purchaser of
digital SLR. So far, the bulk of the digital market
seems to be satisfied through PS models.

Of those willing to purchase at high cost or needing a
DSLR for their work, I would assume that numbers tend
to be higher among professional photographers, mainly
in the photojournalistic and sports field.
Of this target group, the overwhelming majority
already uses Nikon/Canon, hence these companies have a
'sizeable' group of possible purchasers, willing and
able to spend 3000$ and more on a 35mm format slr
body.

The question is, who, among the Pentax owners (PDML
aside), is a DSLR going to satisfy if Pentax is not
present in the same segment as Canon and Nikon?
At the moment prices for a medium lever slr, are
higher than any Pro-level film slr from the
competition and of any body presently offered by
Pentax.

Indeed is any digital is to come out is for the
professional Pentax users, ie 645.
the digital slr pentax, may indeed have to be a
lowerend version (as someone else mentioned on this
thread).

that's about it...

Why not use the Auto110 line to make a digital system?

2002-10-03 Thread MPozzi

The news of Olympus and their new Digital
interchangeable lens reflex system got me thinking on
why pentax could not use the old Auto 110 system
(complete system with zoom lenses etc,) and upgrade it
to include AF, and more importantly: Digital.
Sensor size whould not be an issue,
Batteries could be dealt with through the add on
grip/motor, and it would be in line with Pentax
philosophy of having small/light equipment...
...just a thought..not sure if it has been discussed
before, apologies if it has...

Ease of use...in line with this century perhaps?

I assume the viewfinder to be small therefore hard to
see through esp with glasses...AF may help... (I've
never touched one...)
even 'snap focus' could be a good compromise...

Why should it be MF?

well. Its much better than one would expect for the

nothing bad to say about it xcept the focusing ring is
hard to use in manual.

Hi,
I noticed that noise too...I attributed to 2 possible
causes,
1-the batteries in their compartment
2-the metal rod on the Grip (BG-10) where you fasten
the strap to...(I seem to hear it mainly with the grip
on).

--- Pål_Jensen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Well, the MZ-S makes a noise when shaking it. It
sounds like a small metal ball that moves when
shaking the camera. It's located somewhere in the
prism according to my ears. Interestingly, according
to the Pentax Image stabilization patent, the
camera, not the lenses, have vibration sensors.
Could this be what makes a noise when shaking the
camera? Most likely it's something entirely
different, though; maybe its just a sensor for
determining whether the camera is held vertically of
 horizontally used for metering.
I believe my former MZ-S also had the same noise.

For those interested (from the www.dpreview.com site)

Pentax has updated their 330 and 430 models as well
as confirming the 'Digibino' DB-100. The 'RS' suffix
for the 330 and 430 represents a variety of
improvements over the previous cameras; improved LCD
monitor (although still low 80,000 pixel resolution),
improved performance (shot to shot time), filter
modes, 3D mode (similar to Optio 230), easy view mode
(a shooting priority play mode). Additionally the 'RS'
cameras now feature 11 MB of internal RAM which allows
you to shoot even when your CF card is full.

Correct about the recession, indeed you can search
Nikon and the other companies (I already did nikon

profit and dashing out dividends.
It is also true that Nikon's size and diversity as
Canon and possibly Minolta is what could be
responsible for the profits (interesting to see how
Milnolta and Canon fare.)
All this also possibly points out to less $$ for
product RnD and hence a more conservative market

ruling out the possibility of Pentax using it. Then
again, it could be sales-speak. Other digital-related

told me it was already in commerce...the price
however

Re: 28-70 2.8. Which one to buy?

2002-03-14 Thread MPozzi

Dear Alexandre,
I only have experience with the Sigma EX 28-70/2.8
anc i can say also that my expectations were far
exceeded by the performance of this lens. Even though,
after having owned a consumer sigma 80-200, I was very
dissapointed in its build quality(it fell apart in
my hands and never wanted another Sigma) I have been
using it for 2-3 years now and and its fantastic value
for money, and have gone on to purchase the 80-200 2.8
EX, another great lens, somply because pentax prices
are way beyond my monetary capabilities

There are some links to tests here
http://www.republika.pl/mparvi/testy_ang.htm
Perhaps there are tests...oh, and the sigma has 77mm
filter and weight 100g less than the Tokina...

 So I am considering the

 Sigma 28-70 2.8 EX ASP

 Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 Pro II
 or
 Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX

Which one is better (less distortions, sharper,

 reviews on the 28-70 and
some of them say sigma 28-70 is better that Tokina
 and other say tokina
 is better. I didn't
find any review on sigma 24-70 yet.

 Suggestions, comments?

Re: Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO

2002-03-11 Thread MPozzi

Hi Wendy,
I have the 70-200 f2.8 EX Sigma (one of the latest
models), and as a lens its fantastic in built,
sharpness, contrast and very slightly colder than SMC
glass.

HOWEVER (perhaps of general interest to the PDML), the
lens seems to be having a problem with my MZ-s in
terms of autofocus. It tends to be slightly out of
focus when using the Autofocus, especially noticeable
at the 200mm end.

Now, I've tried the lens on the z-1 and it works fine,
I've tried Pentax lenses ans the 28-70 f2.8 Sigma on
the MZ-s ad it works fine.

So: rapid conclusion is that there may be a problem
with the compatibility of this lens with the MZ-S.
I have sent it to Sigma Italy, they have verified the
presence of a problem (with more than one 70-200mm
f2.8 lens) and they are corresponding with Japan to
see if its a problem with lens software.

So far they cannot find out what's wrong. but are
working on it.

WIll keep the list posted

Sorry to interject but as someone's already asked

Not having any lenses that go below 24mm, and wanting
to have tpossibility to blur background beyond 2-3

wondring how these 2 lenses fared.

 I've had the FA 24/2 for about a month. I can't say

Well, I did point them both in the direction of the

It *is* a plastic zoom with a focus ring that isn't

Point taken Bill, thanks - but is the aperture on
these lenses wide enough?, seeing that the DOF
increases with increased angles
Of course the level of blur or 'bokeh'(i believe)is
subjective, I just wanted to knoe whether it is
somewhat achieveabke, say equivalent to an f4 on a
50mm, or f5.6? etc.

If you get in close enough for a short focus
 distance and
use a wide enough aperture, even a fisheye will go
 out of
focus behind the subject. Whether such positioning

Sorry for the delay in my answer. Over the weekend

In answer to your question, you need to remember
 that most things in nature
are lit from one source (the sun, the moon, a fire
 etc.) so a shot should
appear to be lit by only one light. That is the
 main light and can go
anywhere that looks good and is appropriate to the
 subject and the purpose
of the photo. However the main light alone will
 create shadows that are too
dark for film to render, so a second light called
 the fill light is used,
but it shouldn't contribute any shadows of its own.
 That is why the fill
light is always as close to the camera as possible
 (unless reflections might
be problematic ie. portraits of eyeglass wearers).
 The spread lighting you
describe is ideal for a copystand but is rarely
 satisfactory for 3D
subjects, and will create a nest of crossed shadows
 that are difficult to
 handle.

To arrive at the lighting ratios is simple. The
 whole subject from the
camera's point-of-view is lit by the fill light.
 The main light illuminates
only the highlights and does not reach the shadows.
 If the amount of light
reaching the subject from each light is the same,
 then the shadows get one
measure of light (from the fill) and the highlights
 get two measures of
light (one from the main plus one from the fill).
 The result is a 2:1
 lighting ratio.

So, if half the light reaches the subject from the
fill as it does from the
main then the shadows have one measure of light
 (from fill) and the
highlights have two (from main) plus one (from fill)
 equals three measures
of light therefore the lighting ratio is 3:1. This
 simple arithmatic
provides the lighting ratio for any illumination
 difference.

When you add more lights, eg the background light
 and the hairlight (named
for its purpose in portraiture, also called a
 kicker on movie sets) you
need to take the latitude of the film into account.
 The kicker should be
one to three stops above the general exposure level
 of the lit subject,
depending on how strong an accent on the back edges
 of the subject is
required. The background light is mostly a subtle
 splash of oblique light
for compositional balance which should be about the
 same as the general
exposure. But if you're aiming to get a totally
 white field then you need
to overlight it about a stop (by INCIDENT light
 measurement) to achieve a
pure white. Alternatively aim for a REFLECTED light
 meter level about three
stops above the subject level for colour film or
 four stops higher for bw
film. This puts white one stop into the shoulder of
 the film's curve, and
prevents any greyness. This isn't as easy as it
 sounds because you mustn't
spill background light onto the subject or introduce
 erroneous shadows.

If all this sounds complicated the solution is to
 experiment and the
principles will fall into place. Anyway, if it was
 too easy then
professionals wouldn't get paid to do it :)

 Regards,
 Anthony Farr

Very valuable information indeed

Here is a little more info based on your feedback and
few other questions:
-I do not necessarly need to use a white background.
Grey sounds good. Not sure what the editor wants but I
may suggest different shades.
-I do have a flash (Metz 40mz-3) but am unable to
separate it from the body, and cannot get the cables
to do so here in Rome thanks to the scarce
availability of Pentaz goods, and will not have it in
time for the shoot. is it still a good idea to use it
in TTL as the front light?
-I was planning to use a 135 f2.8 (Pentax FA lens) or

Re: non-favorite Pentax lens?

2002-01-28 Thread MPozzi

Without doubt, the FA 28-80 3.5-4.5 power zoom, that
was sold with the Z-1.
Terrible build lens, Wobbly inner barrel that over the
years fell out. Sticky aperure blades, and over time,
refused to focus at infinity

Re: MZ-S Questions

2002-01-28 Thread MPozzi

Hi Jason, I can answer a few of your points.
Point 1.
Overriding the A from the lens, means going into M
(manual) or Tv (shutter priority)and is done using the
dial on the body. the green button on the front of the
body will bring you back to Program. There is no way
to get aperture priority from the body (answering also
point 3)
Not sure about the max F number, could be your lens
not giving correct info to the body. I vaguely
remember a similar discussion on the list but not
suresurely a list member will give an answer

. Bellows, I guess a Pentax/3rd party kmount bellows
are available 2nd hand, but not sure you'll find ones
(if they were ever made) maintaing any program
features... to double check you could check out:

4. No help there..
Hope it been some help

Song reference to Pentax

2001-12-24 Thread MPozzi

I never thought I would contibute a mail of this sort
to the PDML, but whilst reading the mails, I put in a
CD lent to me by a friend, by Diana Kroll (Old sung
Jazz covers.) the album: When I Look In Your Eyes, the
song: popsicle toes
Well, a line in the song goes someting like, ...how
come you always load that pentax when I'm in the
nude.. !
At least, for once, it wasn't a Nikon.

Re: C41 film for bright conditions?

2001-12-20 Thread MPozzi

Hi,
I believe, (but I'm not sure though, could be a howler
of an urban myth), that certain film companies (I
think its Kodak, not sure about Fuji)produces file
with different specs for the Australian market, due to
the different light there.
If this were true, perhaps its better to purchase it
there?

Hi,

I am after a C41 film to use on a holiday next month,
in 100 and 400iso.
Since its summer in Australia it should be
pretty bright and contrasty
conditions. So a larging lattitude would help.
Any reccomendations for a film for this sort of
situation?

I have been shooting Supra, but find when its
shot in bright light it tends to blow out lighter
colours. Any one else noticed this? Would adjusting
the
ISO make any difference to this?

I have shot some Reala before, but dont really like it
much.
Thanks,
Paul Jones

Re: Flash recommendations for LX please

2001-10-05 Thread MPozzi

I'll try that Thanks...
I do not use the LX as the main camera, but as a
mechanical back-up however I never got round (still)
to feeling confortable with the flash.

I find it difficult to get well balanced shots with
 this combination (tends to overexpose).
I have been shooting it on x synchro at f4. For
 the
type of shots I do, I need to automise it as much
 as
 possible...

Unfortunately, I used full manual mode when I still
 had the LX. If the
subject was large, I suggest you try A mode which
 is not TTL. You can
alter the f-stop setting on the flash to achieve the
 compensation. For
instance, for outdoor shots, if the camera was set
to f4, you can set the
flash to f2.8 or even f2. This way, you can achieve
 flash compensation
(without TTL of course). However, altering the
f-stop on the flash in TTL
mode takes no effect, this method works for non-TTL
 modes only.

 Alan Chan

Re: MZ-S; Built to last

2001-10-05 Thread MPozzi

I can confirm its ruggedness-
I took the MZ-S to India for 1 month in August. It
withstood many extreme conditions remarkably well,
dealing with extremes in humidity and
temperature(airconditioning - monsoon period),
constant lens changes, moisture (mainly from my
shirt-its HOT there- as it got carried around) and
various bumps on the crouded streets.
I mistreated it more than deserved and came out
without a scratch and more importantly delivered.
I also did not have any trouble with switches moving
as I took it in and out of the bag (Lowepro off-trail,
a sort of camera pouch).
The things I found less positive were:
The body got EXTREMELY hot in the sun, being black and
perhaps, being made of metal.
Also the AF selector is not very user-friendly (Pentax
should really provide a back with a joystick
selector), especially because the 6 sensors cover a
wide area-I found myself using the central one most of
the time (as with the Z1).

The good old Pentax AF280T should do. I believe it
 is still available brand
new. I have the Metz 40MZ3i which is an excellent
 flash, but doesn't balance
well on traditional manual focus bodies which is
 rather small in comparsion.
I use it mainly on Z-1p.

I'm sure this one has been turned over many times
 before, but if you
 could please bear with me...

Any recommendations for a flash unit for the Pentax
 LX?

I hate using flash, and never do for 'my' pics. But
 more and more I'm
asked to do portraits and on a sunny day I can't be
 bothered arsing about
with reflectors. I could do with a little fill-in
 flash. What would work
with my LX? Remember - it has to be easy for my
 addled brain to figure
 out...

I know about redeye, but it has to be hotshoe
 mounted, and maybe even the
option of an external battery. Bounce head
 essential, but I could live
without swivel. Pentax brand considered first, but
 what about Metz and
 other makes as well?

A few pointers here would be greatly appreciated
 from one who considers
natural light the best way, but when someone's
 paying for a result, needs
 must...

 Cheers!
