Re: Ot Mac OS upgrade--AAARGH!

Rick, as I recall, when I recently did a LRC upgrade/update, I needed to do a
catalog format upgrade at the same time… Some message that if I didn’t reformat
my catalog then existing images would not be available.

Thanks Alan! I’ll join in on the praise of Filip’s very nice “action” shot!
Nicely seen and composed. I also liked the curious seals in the north and the

sleeping. If I get another opportunity, I’ll look more closely for this sort of

(used) tractor, transitioning from work horses and eventually freeing up room
in his barn for an additional three milking stations. The tractor was my first

Re: Pittsburgh

45-50 years ago, my then wife got into a graduate program at Carnegie Mellon, I
was working in the D.C. area. She came home some weekends, I drove to
Pittsburgh some weekends. So, I did spend quite a bit of time there over
several years. But I must say I never really payed attention to the city
itself, it was just another urban area. I was very pleased to see the city now
through Rick’s eyes.
I need to go back through old slides and see if I even did any photography

I thought it was a fine (Small!) gallery. Like Ann, I had some issues trying to
relate to the theme, and I went a bit outside the bounds with my own
contribution. Looking at the contributions of others, I was reminded of images
I do have with a similar theme, but Still Life is just not embedded in my
vocabulary and I hadn’t considered those earlier. So I was very pleased to see
how others had interpreted the theme. I always learn something from the way
others See through their lens.

choose Metadata, within metadata choose Camera. Select *ist-D or whatever, and
then you can sort by date, and scroll through looking for gaps or anamolies in
naming or numbering. Then repeat the process after selecting a different camera
to work with.

Re: Pentax APS-C cameras

2024-01-27 Thread Stan Halpin
John, in Lightroom Classic, select, e.g., all your Iraq time zoned images.
Under Metadata menu, choose Edit Capture Time. The sub menu offers the option
to do a time zone adjustment. There is a warning that you cannot UnDo any
change. That is only somewhat true. You won’t have an UnDo option per se, but
you can always repeat the action as many times as needed to get it right. And
there is an option to reset to original capture time if you need to back off
and start over.

Re: OT maps help

2023-12-13 Thread Stan Halpin
I know what you mean, have used G maps that way myself. On iOS, I don’t see a
way. I know that, when driving, if I turn off the selected route, Maps quickly
adjusts, does a silent recalc, and on from there. But for planning, I seem to
be stuck just choosing from the three route options offered up.

Rick, we have a whole-house surge protector, it is wired in through the main

shouting “boo Canon, boo Nikon, yeah Pentax” is what has provided the
protection. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

I have used ScanCafe for slides, no complaints.
But also I do have the Epson v 39 that has been mentioned, I use it mostly for
documents. But I think it is ok for old family prints. Tomorrow I’ll scan and
post an old family print which I’ll do at 100, 200, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 3600…
We’ll see.

Re: Whatever became of this lens?

2023-06-17 Thread Stan Halpin
I have the DFA 15-30 which is a very nice lens. I have stopped carrying it when
traveling - too large. For the occasional wide shot I carry an A series 20mm.
The 15-30,24-70, and 70-200 will probably be up for sale later this year -
still trying to resolve camera and lens needs vs my too large inventory.

I’ve been thinking…

2023-04-30 Thread Stan Halpin
After the hiatus of 18+ months in our travels due to the pandemic and
associated shut downs, punctuated by a flooded house, a rental house destroyed
by a falling tree, and then the death of my brother last November I have been
thinking deep thoughts.
Relevant to this group in particular is I have been wondering why I have so
much stuff. My brother’s passing and the time and effort I’ve put into helping
my sister-in-law deal with his accumulation of (mostly Pentax) photo gear,
slides, prints, negatives (many going back to my father’s K-32 slides from the
early 50s, my Grandmother’s Kodak camera shots in the early 1920s and studio
family shots before that) etc. have convinced me that I need to clean out a few
closets.

I have long trips coming up in June and August; in September and through the
fall I will be giving/selling/auctioning much of my seldom used gear. The
*ist-D might stay as a curio item on the shelf, but the ME-Super, K-01, K-5,
WG-60, Q-S1, K-3ii will go. I will probably keep one K-1 and one 645Z, but may
decide to keep just two FF or MF bodies and ditch the other system totally.
Plus assorted lenses, even for the system I retain. Yes, the 15-30, 24-70,
70-200 are a great set, but I am just not likely to ever carry them with me on
anything but a road trip, and I don’t see many road trips in my future. We’ll,
maybe to Grandfather Mountain…
Anyway, don’t be surprised to see flashes of lightening and clouds of dark
smoke from this direction as the gears turn as I try to decide what to keep and
what to let go.

visible almost from our house here In Michigan. My travel calendar is obviously

Re: Vacation suggestion

2023-04-20 Thread Stan Halpin
You say “not the same thing…”. Why not? Just for discussion…

I sat through an on-line workshop yesterday afternoon, Tim Grey on How to Plan
for a Trip. His base example was Rome, whether talking about useful weather
apps or packing tips or day-by-day route planning. But where/what to
photograph? One approach he suggested was to start with google images. He found
about 1.5 million images (Google or Twitter, I lost track) which pretty well
summed up places and viewpoints in that city.

I was reminded of a few years ago, in Venice, with Gianfranco. He chided me for
the photo I was setting up for, an evening shot of the Grand Canal, gondolas in
the foreground, the bends in the canal, Sun on the buildings in the distance.
Too cliche, too much like a postcard? Yes, he had a point. But. No one else had
ever seen that scene nor would anyone ever seen that scene again. Similar,
sure. But my image was uniquely what I was seeing at that point in time. And if
others had had a similar experience, good on them. But I was pleased to see
what I saw and to be able to capture it.
Yes, we explored and found different viewpoints and different scenes, but their
uniqueness didn’t make them better or worse. One fun experience: Meg was
starting to take a photo of a women on a third floor balcony, hanging her
laundry. The lady objected. We backed off, didn’t point cameras at her. But we
did start taking pictures of her reflection in a nearby puddle! Once we started
away, it was fun to see how many people stopped to look into that puddle,
trying to see why we had been so intently studying it.

In short, unless you are shooting for stock photos and don’t want to have your
images lost in the crowd, just shoot what pleases you. And then step aside
because 27 others want to capture that same view, and that’s ok.

Long ago (51 years ago or so) a colleague took a photo workshop in Yosemite-

Looking way ahead. We are doing an Alaska coastal trip in August, Vancouver
B.C. up to Seward and back. I had originally planned extra time in Alaska but
decided to try something totally different. So, we’ll fly to Toronto Thursday

Vancouver on Via Rail sleeper car Sunday morning 13 August.

Suggestions for activities in Toronto and region during those three days would

Re: Old Shutterbug articles

2022-11-28 Thread Stan Halpin
I wish my brother John had done more sorting and purging. But his life got
complicated by Parkinson’s etc in 2015 and he was unwilling/unable to do much
with his photo archives or other stuff after that. Physical and cognitive
decline.
With his images, my dilemma is that my sister-in-law will have a different
filter than I do. I see 30-40 interior shots of some unfurnished vacant
apartments. I would delete the whole batch. No esthetic value, no context. But
she might say “OMG those were the two whirlwind days we spent apartment hunting
when I moved to Buda! Gotta keep those!” So I am trying to sort/organize by
subject and time and location, then I’ll hand it back to her to figure out what
to keep.
John got his first 35mm camera in 1957. He scanned many of the images from the
367 rolls of slide film that her shot over the years. One of the upsides of
this project for me is rediscovering scenes from my teen years, shots of my
parents back then, etc.

Re: Lightroom & computer question

2022-11-11 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks Larry. Totally agree with both points: (1) file organization should be
such that it helps people find images, not just so that LR or other software
can find stuff. My brother has his CDs for example, well sorted by image
capture date. Which is fine if you have his calendar and list of key event date
times. And (2) I’ll test any possible solutions with a small sample.

I told my sister in law this evening that I had recovered 39,000+ Digital
images from 2000-2011. And I showed her a small sample from 2004. Her reaction:
“why did he keep those!?! I would have thrown those away!” In short, she won’t
be compulsive about retaining everything -she wants reasonable access to key
images of important times and places. (They both worked quite a bit outside the
U.S. and did much travel…) so my.challenge is to help her ID and organize what
is important to her, not necessarily what my brother would have wanted to
preserve.

If I had known I would be doing this, I would have started a year ago when my
brother still had the mental capacity to help with this project!

Re: Anybody home?

2022-06-26 Thread Stan Halpin
My lay-persons advice is to ignore the test results at this stage. Unnecessary
anxiety without any valid purpose. Per CDC, you may well be Positive for 90
days after onset. Give your attention to your temperature etc. Treat the
symptoms!
Meg had a horrible cough for several days, I had minor cough, one day of sore
throat and moderately high temp. So a week later she was Negative, 4 weeks
later I was marginally Positive still, Negative at the 6 week mark. But all of
that is not diagnostic of anything, only an indicator that yes I had been
exposed.
I did do occasional tests, contrary to my advice above, but only because I
needed documentation and clearances for travel.

Re: May PUG Countdown

One of my favorite computer screen saver images, unfortunately, is not by me,
not with a Pentax as far as I know. A NASA image, a shot from the Rover on
Mars. A faint rocky foreground, dark sky, small distant “star” which is
actually Earth. When I saw the Geology theme, that image immediately came to
mind! Instead I’ve submitted an image of a big chunk of geology…

Re: Gallery of 15-30 photos

I don’t have a flicker acct, couldn’t star/fave directly there…
I am always impressed by the technical expertise needed to get the star shots,
but the images themselves are usually not my favorite viewing. In this 15-30
set, what really caught my eye was the next-to-last shot, the waterfall (?)…

Re: One thing I really do not like about the K-1

On my recent trip, Day 1, I pulled out card 1, tried to download the day’s

card 2 filled up, new images then started recording onto card 1. But, really?

Re: While we're discussing Mac LR Classic and drives...

2022-02-16 Thread Stan Halpin
Rick, I have several 4, 8, and 10TB OWC drives. My older 4TB holds most of my
photos. It is on a high shelf in the closet. My newest 10TB has a copy of
everything. My two 8TB hold my working backups A and B which I also copy to
every few weeks. My 2020, 2021, and 2022 images are on my internal drive. If I
had only one external holding everything, I would be very nervous, even without
a possible Disk Utility issue.
So, in short, worried or not, I suggest you get a new 10TB OWC, copy everything
off the (failing?) 8TB, and continue using the 8TB as primary with frequent
backups to the newer drive.

I agree with Alan, your image after masking is much improved.
I have played with the new masks a bit, mostly with the sky mask, but haven’t

Thanks Alan and Dan!
One aspect of current cruising is that all guests and crew need to be fully

Re: PDML image sharing

2022-01-01 Thread Stan Halpin
I had a similar resolution question. I am in the process of moving from a 2009
laptop to a 2021. My screen savers and desktop images on the 2009 were from my
favorites from the 2006-2009 era. On the 2021 they looked terrible, I had to go
back and find the originals, reprocess and re-export at a higher resolution.

My usual posts are with long-edge set to 1600 pixels; if anyone wanted a copy I
would be happy to share but I would want to resize the export first.

Portsmouth and Brighton. I stayed with one of my counterparts who lived in

Re: photographing textile arts

2020-06-22 Thread Stan Halpin
Hanging fabric may droop of its own weight. I would probable start with a setup
allowing you to put the material on a flat surface: the floor, a table, etc,
then shoot down from above. I’ve done a bit of this for for-the-record shots of
Meg’s, my sister in law’s, and my own (very limited) works. It takes a special
talent to properly mount/frame fabric and needlework and it would be hard to
replicate with a temporary setup with the object hung vertically.

Re: A River Runs Through

2020-05-27 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks all got your supportive And helpful comments.
A bit of the back story and a brief update.
We live on a river, the Chippewa about .5 miles downriver from the
confluence with the Pine River, about two miles upriver from the confluence
with the Tittibawasee which then joins the Saginaw river and flows into Saginaw
Bay which is an appendage of Lake Huron. Between them, the Pine, Chippewa, and
Tittibawasee drain a very large watershed. Basically flat country, meandering
rivers. We look south over a large bend in the Chippewa, and about a mile to
our north the Tittibawasee roughly parallels the Chippewa the two getting
closer and eventually merging at downtown Midland.
10-12 days ago ( I am loosing track!) a low pressure system parked over
the region and dumped many inches of rain. The hydro section of our National
Weather Service predicted a rise of the Tittibawasee up to X feet at their
river gauge. From past experience I knew that X height would mean approximately
26-28 inches of water in our garage, but said garage is 30” below the level of
our single level home, so no big deal. We moved the car etc from the garage to
higher levels according to a long developed and tested plan.
Then Tuesday a week ago came the big oopsie. The Tittibawasee has
several small dams not too far upriver from town. They hold back enough water
to create recreational lakes but also allow the owner to generate/sell hydro
power. One failed, (predictably given the owners record), the next one
downstream was failing, the predicted crest was now about five feet higher. Of
the roughly 40,000 persons in our town, 10,000 (including us) were issued
immediate evacuation notices. We grabbed a few things and headed for higher
ground 20 miles west. Not too long after that the East-west road behind us
closer to town was closed due to water over the road. Two days later we came
back to our home. The good news was that the second dam partially held, enough
to slow the flow somewhat, and the eventual crest was only a bit over the
historic high, which for us meant only 27 3/8 inches of water in the house.
“ONLY” that much as worst case would have been another 2 feet higher, or more.

Enough for today, I’ll continue with update tomorrow... Slowly recovering, it
will be weeks or months.

As some of you know, our home was flooded last week, high water at 27 3/8
inches inside.
So we have been hauling stuff out, a lot to the curb for trash pickup, much
still to be sorted, decisions about what to try to preserve/restore...
[Side note. Most of my camera gear was high and dry, my computer also, my five

So, sitting tonight going over tomorrow’s schedule and priorities. I mention
that I want to tackle the 15-20 binders that hold my sleeved negatives and
contact prints and selected proof prints. Meg says: “why? Why keep those? Will
you ever use them?” Hmm, well Meg, you have been after me to print a few flower
macros and most of my favorites were with the 645. I suppose I could go back to
using a 645Z and go off looking for flowers. Meg says: “That would make more
sense than trying to recover those thousands of negatives just to find and
produce 5 prints.”
I think she has a point. Particularly if it turns out that my digital archives
are also toast.

Starting next Monday a professional cleaning crew of 5-6 persons will spend
3-4 days mitigating the flood damage, sanitizing, and cleaning. Another 2 weeks
after that of high powered fans for drying. Meanwhile we’ll be looking for new
stove, refrigerator, furnace/boiler, hot water heaters, washer and dryer,
bedroom furniture, living room furniture... Assuming that our insurance
coverage comes through, by July this will mostly be behind us and I can revisit
that thought about a 645Z...
Thought for the day: avoid floods.

Thanks to all for your comments.
If you follow the original link and then scroll to the next image in my PESO

another .3 stops, I nudged the Shadows slider up a bit (thanks Paul), and I
tightened the crop (thanks Ann and Ken).

As to reading his expression, actually he is acting like a good model and
saying “can you see me ok now? Is this a good pose?” This shot is the 2nd or
3rd in a series, he had been higher in the tree, more obscured by branches in
the earlier shots. He scampered lower, checked to make sure I got the shot,
then vanished.

Re: Metaskills Part 1

2019-09-17 Thread Stan Halpin
Ken, I agree that not many newbies care about the nuts and bolts of exposure,
but I think Larry’s point is that it would help them if they would only take
time to understand.
Today I heard a well-done presentation by an art history professor, the general
context was Picasso’s animal images, but the point was that Picasso invented
new ways of seeing. But at the base, he was a superb draftsman. He could have
done anything because he knew the basics. Today’s beginning digital camera
users can “use” the camera/phone and produce images, but they won’t likely find
their own vision until they understand their craft fundamentals.

Re: Will Sigma stop making lenses for K-mount?

2019-09-12 Thread Stan Halpin
One of the reasons I would hate to switch from Pentax is the ready availability
of good lenses for low prices. eBay. I owned one off-brand lens once, a Sigma
150-500. There may have been another but basically it has all been Pentax. If I
were ever going to switch it would be to Nikon for similar ergonomics. But the
thought of dealing with multiple Nikon lens mounts and incompatibilities puts
me off.

Re: Thoughts on 50th...

2019-07-20 Thread Stan Halpin
A neighbor of mine in Kansas City had worked as a programmer for a NASA
contractor. He suggested a software patch (a backdoor) to allow control of
shuttle operations onboard. Boss said “Not in the specs. Work it on your own
time if you like.” So he did. And Apollo 13 redirect back home became possible
because of his code. I am sure there are thousands of other stories of
too-seldom acknowledged bits of engineering creativity and foresight.

Some place I have the B&W negs of the shots I took of the landing. (From my tv
screen.)

2019-06-10 Thread Stan Halpin
The K-1 is three years old. The ii version is only one year old, but probably
only an interim model, something new could be on the horizon. Or, given the
weight of the camera, it could be that not many are buying the grip, leading to
an oversupply...

I don’t know what more I could want from a K-1ii follow-on, and don’t expect to
buy into the next generation. Though if Pentax would offer a 645zii with
in-body SR, I could be seriously tempted.

Thanks Cotty! I will fill in details as available.
General plan:Train from Paris to London sometime 4 October, from there somehow
out to our booked lodging in Shaftesbury. Some by train, some by car?
Depart LHR mid-day October 8. Everything in between is to be determined, with
some time but by no means all our time to be spent with Cousin Jean. [Jean is
the widow of Meg’s father’s Cousin. So first or second Cousin at quite some

GESO: wildlife at sea (5)

2019-03-29 Thread Stan Halpin
We are on a ship, northbound along the Peruvian/Ecuadorian coast. Pretty much
confined to quarters.
Meg wasn’t feeling well, went to see the ship’s Med staff. Good news, they gave
her good meds and advice. Bad news, they said that with her fever she is
probably infectious and is in “isolation.” But we have a good balcony and the
weather is pleasant and the wildlife in port and at sea doesn’t seem too camera
shy.

An unplanned extra overnight in Iguazú due to flight cancellations. Gave me
some downtime to play with images.
I have been using LR CC on my iPad, syncing to the Cloud for backup. Once in
the cloud I can create and share selected shots as a gallery. Have not figured
how to reduce the pixel density/file size. But I have found that if I do
additional editing on my iPad, the edits are synced, and the gallery images
update as well.

Example small gallery: [ street art in Asuncion Paraguay]

Ask DA for your medical records including shot records.
