Looking for: AA battery grip for SFXn/SF1n

2023-09-23 Thread Joe J. Wilensky
Hi, all,

Does anyone have an extra AA grip available/for sale for the SFXn/SF1n that
gives the camera the ability to take 4 AAs instead of one 2CR5 battery?

Thanks,
Joe

Looking for gray-and-white *ist strap

2023-02-15 Thread Joe J. Wilensky
Hi, all,

My favorite strap to use with the black-and-chrome K-01 is actually the soft
gray/white Pentax strap that came with the 35mm film *ist camera (see reference
pic here):
https://photos.app.goo.gl/etahXSy92VPu59219

Does anyone have an extra of this strap for sale or trade?

I have a LN Pentax 100th anniversary strap available.

Image settings for K-5 IIs?

Wondering what those of you with the K-5 IIs have found to be the best default
image settings (at least for jpgs) … do you dial up or down the sharpness
settings at all? Without an anti-aliasing filter, do you find that
sharpness/fine sharpness/extra sharpness makes a particularly good match with
this sensor?

Re: Found a Pentax mistake in the Super Tak 50mm f1.4

2013-08-13 Thread Joe J. Wilensky
The earlier 8-element version was sought after by collectors for a while
because it didn't yellow with age, as the 7-element lens did. The 7-element
50/1.4 Takumar used thorium in (one?) rare-earth glass element, as did a couple
of other Takumars of the time.

I think the earlier lens was worse wide open and took longer to improve by
stopping down, though it gave a dreamy effect when wide open that was sometimes
desirable.

The earlier lens' rear element may have also protruded more -- in fact, when it
was released, it couldn't be used on earlier Pentax SV/H3v, S3/H3, S1a/H1a,
etc. cameras because of the mirror box design. The SV/H3v mirror box was
tweaked to allow this lens to be mounted without damaging the rear element
(those later SV/H3v cameras had the green "R" marking the rewind lever rather
than an orange one.

FS: Tamron SP 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 macro AF aspherical (IF) lens, includes front

hood.

This is a film-era, full-frame lens. Balances well on Pentax DSLRs, though it
isn't weatherproof. $110.

It's this lens, for reference:

FS: Low-mileage K-7 body, WR kit zoom, Tamron 24-135 lens

2013-07-12 Thread Joe J. Wilensky
FS: Pentax K-7 body, low shutter count (2,295), EX- condition. Purchased from a

Pentax DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR lens, EX+ condition. I had bought this lens
new and sent it back to Pentax before the warranty was up because of sub-par
performance. They calibrated it to factory specs and it now performs very, very
well for this kit lens! A weather resistant lens, it's a great match on the
weather-resistant K-7. $100.

RE: Eye-fi Mobi Card

George,

It's all or nothing, though, right? That is, it sends all photos -- there's no
way to only send select ones from the camera to the iOS device?

Any chance that might change in the future?

time/sequence options).

RE: FS: Two Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super-Wide II lenses (one AF, one MF)

2012-12-21 Thread Joe Wilensky
These lenses are still available -- photos available on request. If interested,
email me at jj...@cornell.edu. Thanks for the discussion about these lenses
sparked by this posting last week!

Two lenses in excellent condition -- the AF Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super-Wide II and
the MF (with Pentax-A contacts) Sigma 24mm f/2.8 Super-Wide II lenses in Pentax
mount.

The AF lens seems to need a -1.0 EF adjustment on most Pentax digital bodies;
the MF lens needs -1.3 EF or so (this seems to be typical of Sigma lenses from
the film era on current Pentax bodies?)

These are nice compact prime lenses and the AF version is not something Pentax
has ever had in its own lineup (only the very large and expensive 24mm f/2.0).

See a decent selection of comments and reviews on these two lenses here:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-24mm-f2-8-af-super-wide-ii.html

http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/sigma-24mm-f2-8-super-wide-ii.html

Both are multicoated, have 52mm filter threads and I believe I have two copies
of the clip-on "Sigma perfect hoods" that go with them.

The AF lens focuses in the "correct" Pentax direction; the MF lens is opposite.
F-stop ring is the correct Pentax direction on both lenses. They both focus
down to 0/6 ft./0.18 m.

Asking $135 for the AF lens, $85 for the MF.

Re: Enablement/Replacement!

I also have a Pentax K10D kit that I would be happy to sell at a below market

terrific Pentax K-7 from a list member for a very good deal!

Let me know if anyone is interested: Pentax K10D body, cheapie version of the
standard zoom, two batteries, charger, original box and other materials.

RE: Overnight snow time lapse (Pentax W90)

2011-03-08 Thread Joe Wilensky
The W90 lets you do it in camera -- set interval (one photo every five minutes)
and total duration (I think this was 7.5 hours) and then shutter button to take
the first photo and start the process. Result when finished is an .avi file
(size/framerate based on the movie settings the camera was already set to).

On tripod, of course. Screen stays off and camera is in powersave between
shots. It will let you check on progress (time remaining) by pressing the power
button (this also gives you an option to end the interval shoot early).

FS: LX body (BGN), AF Sigma DC 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 (EX+)

2010-12-17 Thread Joe Wilensky
LX body:

BGN or user condition, definitely, with wear and some marks, but really quite
nice for a user LX. No sticky mirror syndrome; see pics at link below and/or
e-mail for more details. I do have the standard screen installed and the SA-23
screen for more precise focusing with large-aperture lenses. Lenses available
too if you're interested. Body, strap, caps, and extra focusing screen, $200.

Sigma DC 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5:

This is the older version of this lens, the one without image stabilization
(though on the Pentax bodies, you don't need it)!

EX+ condition, includes original caps and hood.

$250, includes shipping & insurance in the continental U.S. Outside the U.S.
will be slightly more with shipping.

FS Friday: PZ-1p body, great user condition, $125

2010-05-28 Thread Joe Wilensky
This body would likely get a BGN rating on KEH, but it operates
wonderfully and has signs of average use.

I think this is my favorite autofocus-era Pentax body; see the specs
at <http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/film_Z-PZ/zpz1p.html>.

All caps and covers (plus strap and a battery) included; there is a
slight mark on the top LCD (near top center; see photo) and the common
crack on the bottom plate by the battery door (see photo) that doesn't
affect operation in any way.

$125, includes Priority Mail shipping with insurance in the
continental U.S., additional for shipping elsewhere.

Optio i-10

2010-03-22 Thread Joe Wilensky
I really wanted to like this camera, but what a disappointment ...
this is the review I put up on amazon.com. I'm surprised there's
nothing else out there yet on this camera at all, considering the
interest it sparked around the Web when the design and images of it
were released back in January. But there's only my review on the black
one and (oddly and separately) one person's review on the white one at
amazon.com ...

"Wow, I wanted to love this camera ... the aesthetics/design got me as
soon as I saw the first images released back in January. I have enough
old Pentaxes (including an Auto 110 Super) to really appreciate the
retro look, styling and old-style logo. The form factor was actually
quite nice, with a good balance, small but really nice right-hand
grip, and a pleasant grippy texture. It was a bit light (plasticky)
for its size.

But the picture-taking experience -- slow, slow, slow, at least by
2010 standards. I think the 2004 PowerShot I have is faster. Flash
photos were terribly slow because of the preflash, which seemed to add
an extra second and a half to the process. And images were soft
overall, but softer as you zoom anywhere near the telephoto end. Noise
and speckling was apparent at nearly all ISO speeds. As far as
positives about image quality, in bright daylight, at 80 ISO (the
sensor's base speed), images weren't bad and the lens did show good
flare resistance.

Videos were technically HD, but at quality poor enough that it didn't
seem to be worth the higher spec. Zoom in video mode is only available
as digital zoom, which degrades image quality immediately.
Sliding battery cover was very fragile and seemed prone to become
misaligned and I was very, very careful with it; I would always worry
about its durability.

I didn't get to check out any of the really fancy features like pet
face recognition. Human face recognition seemed to work reasonably
well, though the photos weren't necessarily better exposed because of
it. In fact, basic flash photos/snapshots seemed washed out, with very
muted colors.

All in all, a very big disappointment. I knew it had fairly average
camera specs (fairly run-of-the mill point-and-shoot specs for a 2010
p&s) with a cool design, but the photo quality was such a step
backward from anything else I'm using today that I had to return it."

I'm thinking about the K-X, and since I have both the K100D and the

Images available upon request; also, I can sell body only, or with the

2009-06-05 Thread Joe Wilensky
A couple of the best 1990s-era autofocus film bodies and a couple of
late '70s M-series lenses. Photos available on request. See below:

Bodies:

Black Pentax MZ-3 body: A step up from the MZ-5n/ZX-5n (one stop
higher shutter speed, tweaked autofocus). Condition: EX to EX+, only
odd flaw is that the paint has been removed from the plastic shutter
release button (it's a translucent amber/off-white color now). It
could easily be repainted, or, leave as is. Full working condition,
clean. See http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/MZ-ZX/mzzx3.html for
specs. This model looks great in black! (http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/MZ-ZX/MZ-3_black.gif
) $150. Includes strap, batteries, body cap, all covers.

Black Pentax PZ-1p: EX+, no crack by battery door. Includes strap,
body cap, all covers, battery. See http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/bodies/Z-PZ/zpz1p.html

caps. See http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/zooms/short/

Pentax SMC-M 28mm f/2, BGN condition (Some signs of wear, one bright
mark/circular spot on front element 3/4 way to edge. Doesn't appear to
affect photos).See http://www.bdimitrov.de/kmp/lenses/primes/wide-angle/M28f2.html

Question -- best mail order film processing option?

2009-01-06 Thread Joe Wilensky
Question to all still shooting film (whether often or not) who no
longer have a local lab and who don't do the processing themselves --
what's the best option for mail-order processing if what I really want
are pretty good prints, the negatives, and a CD or the ability to
download decent scans of the images? (In the continental U.S.)

Years ago I used Mystic and then Ofoto, but what would you recommend
now?

I think some of the online printing/photo upload services (i.e.
Shutterfly, etc.) that may also offer film processing/development do
so as an afterthought; I'm looking for one where they're likely to
continue processing film and therefore take some pride in it.

Pentax sighting: Shutter movie trailer

2008-03-03 Thread Joe Wilensky
Just saw this on TV last night and took a screen grab from the
trailer online. I saw a different TV trailer, though, that showed the
Pentax twice. A Hasselblad, a Leica and some digitals can also be
seen in the trailers and online gallery from the movie.

http://homepage.mac.com/wilensky/Pentax_sighting.jpg

Anyone want to share any stories about "spirit photography"?

The movie makes it seem that ghosts or spirits can show up on both
film and digital capture, though film gets a plug in the synopsis: "A
newly married couple discovers disturbing, ghostly images in
photographs they develop after a tragic accident. Fearing the
manifestations may be connected, they investigate and learn that some
mysteries are better left unsolved."

Re: OT: Canon JPG files changed by Photoshop?

2008-02-09 Thread Joe Wilensky
I don't know if it matters if this is Mac or PC, but I think just
opening it Photoshop makes a thumnail icon or a "Photoshop" jpg icon
that "goes with" the file rather than the generic jpg icon it had ...
even without saving it, that might be enough for the camera not to
like it.

Maybe someone else has a better technical explanation?

FS: Pentax SMC-FA 28mm f/2.8

2008-01-25 Thread Joe Wilensky
For sale:

Pentax SMC-FA 28mm f/2.8

EX+ to LN- condition.

Beautiful compact prime lens that gives a very pleasing field of view
on the digital SLRs. Very good compromise of focal length, lens
speed, price and compactness, resulting in a moderately wide normal
on the digitals.

I sent this lens in to Pentax for checking and cleaning in December
2006; it was cleaned and calibrated to Pentax specs.

I'll include the original Pentax front and rear caps and an S80-80
soft case.

Re: K100D shutter sound like...

2008-01-23 Thread Joe Wilensky
I've found that it sounds much louder than the *ist D (I don't have
the *ist DS or *ist DL to compare). It reminds me of the difference
between the Super Program and the ME Super, for instance, or between
the PZ-1p and the ZX-5n, with the *ist D being the significantly
quieter of the two. K100D is a slightly muffled "clack," whereas the
*ist D is a subtle "snick."

I find that the K100D shutter isn't _objectionably_ loud, but it is a
_significant_ shutter sound.

2008-01-04 Thread Joe Wilensky
For sale: Two of Pentax's stellar prime lenses in EX condition:

• Pentax SMC-M 85mm f/2
I bought this originally from a list member. Includes front and rear

I'll include a Pentax hard case as well.

• SMC 35mm f/2
This is the pre-M version of this lens -- 52mm filter thread and a
nice chunky feel. I believe it is optically identical to the SMC
Takumar version it replaced. Excellent condition. One minor surface
scratch near the "22" on the aperture ring and minor interior dust
visible that shouldn't affect photos. Includes original front and
rear caps.

Re: Who here is using the oldest DSLR?

2007-12-10 Thread Joe Wilensky
I purchased an *ist D last March when the price of the body only
dropped to $400 on Amazon (through Cameta). I already had a K100D, my
first DSLR, purchased in September 2006. I picked the *ist D up to
use as a second body and to keep at work -- I also had the idea that
while I may someday replace the K100D, there might be some historical
and collector satisfaction in having Pentax's first DSLR.

As per John's note below, does anyone else use the FA 28/2.8 as the
main lens or one used most often on the Pentax DSLRs? I often choose
it for the slightly wider field of view than the 35/2 even though
it's a stop slower (I have the 21/3.2 as well). I thought having the
21 and the 35 would mean that I wouldn't use the 28 as much, but I
often find it's either the perfect choice (or the perfect compromise).

I haven't eBayed them yet, but this might really be my last try here
before putting them up ...

* Pentax Super A body. EXC+ condition. This camera feels and operates
like new. It's technically the exact same camera as the Super
Program, but it somehow feels like a Super Program "Limited" in all
black. I will include a standard Pentax strap, along with the deluxe
"European Camera of the Year 1983" strap that was available. Front
finger grip, body cap, original Pentax case (fits even with the front
finger grip on) and instruction manual
included.

Price: $110 including shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

• Pentax SMC-A 24-50mm f/4 lens. KEH bargain condition, but closer to
a real-life EX as far as I can tell; no major blemishes, dust or
marks. More solid-feeling than some of the other A-series zooms like
the 35-70 and more metal in the construction than the A 50/1.7 or 50/2.

FS: EX+ Super A body, 50/1.4 A lens, 35-105/3.5 A lens

2007-07-06 Thread Joe Wilensky
A few items for sale. Photos available on request.

* Pentax Super A body. EXC+ condition. This camera feels and operates
like new. It's technically the exact same camera as the Super
Program, but it somehow feels like a Super Program "Limited" in all
black. I can include a standard Pentax strap, along with the deluxe
"European Camera of the Year 1983" strap that was available. Front
finger grip, body cap, original Pentax case and instruction manual
included.

Price: $125 including shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

* Pentax SMC-A 50mm f/1.4, EX condition. Focusing is smooth without
feeling mushy like some A lenses sometimes tend to get. Clear class,
beautiful coatings. Original front and rear caps included.

Price: $95 including shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

Purchase the Super A with the 50/1.4 for a $200 kit.

Also available:

front and rear caps included.

Price: $110 includes shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

FS: Vivitar Series 1 28mm f/1.9 for Pentax K

2007-04-23 Thread Joe Wilensky
FS: Pentax K version of Vivitar Series 1 28mm f/1.9 VMC lens.
Original wide-angle hood by Vivitar is included.

Lens is in bargain condition by KEH standards, but still quite nice.
Glass is very nice, no nicks/scratches, only a little minor dust
between elements. Some definite wear to edges of aperture ring, and a
nick here and there is visible on the outer edge of the focusing
ring. Hood is also in bargain condition with some wear, but intact
and threads are fine.

Benefits of the f/1.9 lens, as opposed to the Vivitar 28mm f/2 lens,
is that it is an actual Series 1 lens (dating to the late 1970s, I
believe) and that it has the "floating" group of elements that kick
in at close focusing distances to improve image rendition, sharpness
across the frame. You can feel the floating elements engage at a
point on the focusing ring, which is normal.

Price: $75 including shipping in the continental U.S.

image of the ad from a list member at some point, but can't remember
who):

FS: SMC-A lenses, more

2007-04-20 Thread Joe Wilensky
A few items for sale. Photos available on request.

* Pentax SMC-A 35mm f/2, KEH EX condition. Pentax hard case
and front and rear caps included.

I sold this lens a few months ago to a PDML member but it was
returned because of a significant amount of dust between the
elements. I have since had the lens cleaned, and all is clean except
a very minor amount of dust between two elements. My repair guy said
getting between these two elements to clean would have marred part of
the innards of the lens holding the elements together. The remaining
amount of dust should not affect photos.

This is a beautiful A-series prime lens that shows up fairly rarely.
Same optical formula as the SMC-M version, I believe, but with the
improved coatings. Absolutely perfect on a Super A, Super Program,
P5, Pentax autofocus bodies, etc., or even a digital Pentax SLR.

Price: $150 includes shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

Re: Prettiest/Ugliest Pentax Equipment (was RE: New Sony)

2007-03-09 Thread Joe Wilensky
There seems to be an almost lovely clunky functionality to the SFX
series now -- they seem so wedded to their time, a late-1980s, funky
LCD-and-switches style.

I initially thought the PZ-1/PZ-1p series were ugly bulbous plastic
blobs but I later came to love their form factor, ergonomics and size
-- and this is from someone who has a huge appreciation for the older
Pentaxes as well, from the SV through the K series, LX and Super A. I
just consider the more modern bodies a different animal.

Re: For PZ1p / Z1p users

2007-02-19 Thread Joe Wilensky
I as well used the PZ-1p for quite a while and never used the User
Set feature. But I know it's useful to some photographers, though I
would certainly say he should get to know the camera and most of its
functions quite well before using the "User Set" functions at all. By
then, he'll have a pretty good idea of what particular set of
shooting conditions and settings he'd most like to have available as
a quick memorized setting.

2007-01-08 Thread Joe Wilensky
For sale: Pentax SMC-DA 16-45/4 AL ED. Like new, all original box,
packaging, lens caps, lens hood. The UPC symbol on bottom was cut out
because I redeemed the rebate.

It's a beautiful lens, and one I purchased just before I bought my
K100D last summer because I was sure I would miss the equivalent of a
24mm wide angle on the digital. I had planned to buy the K100D body
only, but I found a good deal on the body and kit lens and they
didn't have any body only in stock at the time. As it turns out, I
find I reach for the kit lens more often for general zoom work and
snapshots because the 16-45 is significantly larger, especially when
zoomed to wide angle.

Price: $275 includes shipping/insurance in the continental U.S.

Hi I'm new + KX/MX question

2006-12-09 Thread Joe B
Hi- I've just arrived here!

I have no previous Pentax experience other than borrowing my sister's
Spotmatic in the 70s and briefly handling an MX that I bought to give to
someone (and probably should have kept for myself ).

I like this vintage of film SLR and have several older bodies and lenses
from other manufacturers, alongside modern equipment. I'm somewhat drawn
to Pentax now because I keep reading about the bokeh of Pentax lenses
(an important consideration for me) and now they make a DSLR that
accepts the old lenses AND has antishake.

For now I'm thinking of getting either an MX or a KX. I know the basic
specs of both. Is there any reason I should be avoiding either of these-
or looking for any particular problems with either model? Are there any
technical issues arising nowadays after 30 odd years of use- for
example, is the smaller MX nowadays considered to be any less solid or
reliable than the KX? Does one have a noticeably better
viewfinder/screen than the other? Any other such issues would be of
interest. Thanks for any help,

Joe B.

I have ordered the K100D, which should be arriving today!

In the meantime, I will be holding on to a number of other film

couple of what are certainly extras (or directly replaced by the
K100D's arrival).

Pentax PZ-1p body and grip strap, EX++ condition, functions perfectly: $225

Pentax Super Program body, EX+ condition, fully functional, includes
front grip: $75

Pentax P50 body, EX condition, fully functional, includes front grip: $60

Re: PESO: Cockerill Ougree

2006-07-11 Thread Joe Strain
What are we looking at?

 I missed the beginning.

The latitude of your color film at that lighting
situation is excellent!

I am amazed at the detail I see in the foreground
while the industrial situation in the background is
exposed well too.

You were asking miracles from your film and you got
it.
I would never have attempted that shot with the
dramatically differring lighting. I am a chicken I
guess. Maybe as a new digital user I can try to break
some rules

I think the shot is excellent...but that's just ME

Re: just stopping by

2006-07-10 Thread Joe Strain
I have a small stable of Pentax lenses and they are
not described as "old" they are "classic"

My spotties's meters WORK and I prefer my Sekonic
L-28C incident light meter.

Yeah, I DO use the Pentax spotmeter for casual work,
but My Sekonic has save me' arse too many times to
disregard. besides, it needS NO BATTERIES!

Tell me, does Yorkshire have PUBS older then the US?
One of my friends is a Yorkshireman who rubbed that
salt in my wounds once when I served him barbequed
roast TURKEY...He and his family stripped it to the
carcass.

Best regards!

I have been taking photos for a couple of months -
no idea what brought it on. Some kind of madness.

I mostly enjoy using my father's old Pentax Spotmatic
F with a broken lightmeter. I have another Spotmatic
(not F) which actually works, but I really
don't enjoy fiddling about with that black metering
switch on the side.

I'm more of a film type I think. I only really enjoy
using the D-SLR when I stick old M42 Asahi Super
Multi Coated Takumar lenses onto it.
So I consider the results of that to be at least
half-Pentax.
I am obsessed with old Takumar lenses, since they
seem to have magical qualities of sharpness mixed
with smoothness that I can't get any other way. They
almost seem to "melt" things, like the
 brickwork here:

Re: PESO: Harvest Shower

Jack,

That is an excellent picture.

 Is it available commercially ?

It would make an excellent LARGE print to mount for
display in one's home

I'd love to order a high quality print or down load a
high rees image.

2006-07-09 Thread Joe Strain
I have an F and a Ricoh Singlex with the self timer
and the 50mm f 1.4 lens that looks exactly like my 50
f 1.4 super takumar.

Will using most of my lenses with M42 to K adapter on
my *istDL

I used to soup my own color reversal and direct
positive B & W film but prefer the convenience of
digital

Re: New K bodies listed on B

2006-07-09 Thread Joe Strain
I just joined the list today from a SPOTMATIC group
having chosen to use my Pentax optics on a new *istDL

My interests are in technical and macro phorography
using f 4.5 Pentax Macro 50 mm, 100 mm (or
thereabouts) bellows takumar

So far I havent learned a thing and will be keeping my
responses OFF till I see the this list going back ON
THEME

Best wishes and silently lurking here in Winter garden
