RE: PESO - Close Encounter

Those infamous five tones have been ringing in my head since I looked at your
photo yesterday.

Oddly, I had a dream last night that I floated up to a large mothership and
when I woke up this morning I had an unusual oily discharge "down there".

More than a coincidence?

No matter, it's a really cool photo. Looks like a very impressive thing!

I had an HDC calendar with a couple of his landscape photos in it.
They were brilliant. Made me wonder who made his prints for him as I
gather he didn't do his own darkroom work.

I think you're mistaken.

HCB did reportage.

Ansel Adams did landscapes. You're probably confusing them.

Don't feel bad. It could happen to anyone.

Re: TYTimes blog: A lost interview with HCB

2013-06-22 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Love the guy. I tend to agree with much of what he says, or at least understand
where he's coming from.

He always considered himself a surrealist who happened to use a camera to
realize his vision (I hesitate to use the term "art").

Towards the end of his life he stopped shooting altogether (except "snapshots"
for personal purposes). He drew, sketched, painted. The camera was no longer
any use to him.

Hey, I can see why he says what he does about photography schools and
photojournalism. Geez, he invented himself as he went along. He was pure
spontaneity with a camera. You can't teach that. And even if you could it
wasn't there to teach when he was shooting.

He might have felt differently were he a landscape or nature photographer, but
he never could be those, could he?

He always had a knack for being where the action was, but not to capture it as
newsworthy event. That was secondary. The event, like the camera, was a means
of expressing his surrealism.

I probably am not expressing myself well (probably?) but I totally get him. And
I mostly agree although I recognize that much of what he says applies only to
him and not the general public or other photographers.

Cheers,
frank

Re: PESO: Cowgirl Poetry

2013-06-22 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Hey Walt, the crop (or lack thereof) isn't a "flaw". You just haven't tried it
yet on this photo.

Yeah "cropping in the camera" is most often preferred but not always possible.

The crop I'm proposing isn't a drastic one and should be very do-able without
screwing up anything. But who knows, it might not work and you'll prefer this
framing.

Thank you, Frank!

She was definitely a cute little young lady. She and her mother both
seem pleased with the photos I got, and her mother informed me that she
definitely wants me to do her fall portraits later this year.

Looks like the crop is the biggest flaw in the image -- though the lack
of softness in the grass is something I wish I'd picked up on before, as
well. So, the shot still needs a bit of work, but I do like the mood I
was able to capture.

As for your birds, bikes, beasts and blokes, I like the work you're
doing and if you're enjoying it, that's the important thing. And I
suspect if you really wanted to do shots of pretty girls, you could
probably arrange it in fairly short order. :)

Thanks again. I do appreciate the input.

M 200mm f4.0.

I dunno, maybe 10 feet away? Maybe less. I gotta get pretty close for the birdy
close-ups I get. Have to very stealthy. Well, not stealthy because I'm often in
the open, more that I have to be very slow, quiet and deliberate. And be
prepared for the little guys to flit off before I get the shot I want.

But some days I manage a keeper or two if I'm lucky. Other days (like today),
nothing. Oh well, day not half over yet. Left the Lake, heading downtown for
urban grit. Different approach required. ;-)

Thanks for the comment, Walt. And thanks to all who looked and commented. Much

2) Like this a lot. Yeah, seeing her eyes would be nice, but that would be a
different photo (yes, there's frank stating the obvious again). My point is,
this works and creates (or should I say "captures") great mood. Pose, outfit,

I ~might~ crop just a bit off the left. That space does nothing and getting her
a bit more off-centre would make things even more interesting imho. Peel just a
bit (equal amounts to maintain the "north/south" balance you have now) off the
top and bottom so you keep the same frame dimensions you have now.

Yesterday we took our long-anticipated hot air balloon ride outside Philly.  We
launched at ~0630, on a cool and clear morning with some mist and high clouds.
1:20 and about 9 miles later the pilot dropped us quickly but gently into a
remarkably small suburban yard, threading between trees and power lines.
Impressive.

Six passengers and the pilot were stuffed into a space about 5 x 6 ft--cozy.  I
had just enough room to turn 90 degrees and change lenses.

Photographically the trip was challenging:  since quarters were so tight and we
stayed fairly close to the ground (it was calm above ~1000 ft, as the other
balloon learned the hard way), I mostly used my 10-17 fisheye.  The wide field
of view was nice in the cramped quarters, but the distortion was sometimes
troublesome.  This especially affected shots of the balloon above us--it is a
beautiful sight, having this gigantic colorful sunlit gasbag above one, but the
distortion makes it look about the size of a beach ball.

Enough blather!  The gallery is here:

The echo of blue between painting and background door really makes it.

Re: GESO: Alisa W. photo shoot -- 6/17/13 (50 images)

2013-06-19 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Frankie says "Relax!"

I didn't trash all 80s synth pop. Yeah there was a lot of shite out there but
some of it was fun, dance-able stuff that was just well-written pop: Human
League, Gary Newman, Soft Cell, Howard Jones all come to mind as having
recorded pretty decent tunes.

My beef was with Cockburn. He was still writing good tunes but synth pop wasn't
doing him or his music justice. Sure, Lovers in a Dangerous Time was a catchy
tune (horrible video!) but his later acoustic versions are s much better:

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRv8G7i0Dio&feature=youtube_gdata_player

As for my iPod (actually my portable music is on my Android) I can assure you
that you will find neither Beyonce nor Rihanna there. Bach, Elgar, Copland,
Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Miles, Steely Dan, Sleater-Kinney,
Shone Knife, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, yes, lots of Bruce Cockburn. However
synth pop, R&B and hip-hop are under-represented (that is to say: not there).

;-)

Wait, is this the same Knarf who trashed all 80's synthpop a few days
ago? You shouldn't even _know_ who Jewel or Taylor Swift are, let
alone what they look like.

You've been outed, man. You secretly have Beyonce and Rihanna on your
iPod -- admit it! And it wouldn't surprise me to hear that you are a
big Depeche Mode fan too.

There's one bend in Etobicoke Creek (several kilometres from my house) where

We had rainstorms pass through while I was out at my Tuesday night "folk"
music circle. Nice sunset just about the time we got finished. I was
standing around in the parking lot talking to one of the guys when I
noticed the rainbow. It took a tiny bit of digging under the passenger
seat, but I finally found my old Canon A60.

It's almost 10 years old now and only 2MP, but it's still working. But I
think that's not going to be true for too much longer.

One of my local pushers has both the Nikon Coolpix 7100 & Canon
Powershot G15 that were mentioned in the earlier (semi-hijacked) thread
about point 'n shoot photography; has them both in stock.

No Pentax except for a used *ist-Ds.

He had the Nikon out on the shelf as a demo, so I took a quick look at
it. I didn't ask him to pull the G15 out of a box since he was kind of
busy with another customer who was actually buying a D600, 24-85 &
70-200f/4. Figured I could come back later & take a look at it.

Plus, I want to get by the other local shop tomorrow and see if they've
got them & compare the prices. The other shop is the one the owner told
me he was talking to Pentax to see if he could get to carry them again.

The D600 makes me wish Pentax would get their shit together and offer a
full-frame DSLR. The D600 doesn't quite do it for me, but it's almost
there and it might be what I have to settle for if Pentax can't get me
what I want.

thereafter, I got a response from a friend of mine who's been telling me

ready to get it underway within two hours, but I told her I had to make
some arrangements with a friend of mine to see if I could use his place
to take some shots and that we ought to shoot for the early afternoon,
just to give him a little bit of notice. I called, he agreed, and we all
went out there and started shooting. This is the product after my
initial run-through of the more easily workable shots:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157634187251295/

All shot with the K-5 and F50/1.7 with my recently purchased flash unit

safe and didn't want any big surprises. Also, I didn't realize until I
got home that I'd had the diffuser in my pocket the whole time. So, some
of the shots came out a tad harsh, but overall, I have to say I'm pretty

Great work.

The portraits are especially fetching. She seems so comfortable in front of the
camera. I love the "Jewel meets Taylor Swift" thing she has going on there.

Don't take this the wrong way (either of you) but she looks just a bit "chunky"
or "thick around the waist" in the last several photos. I don't get the feeling
from the other photos that she is that way but the combination of her outfit
and some of the shooting angles is not flattering to my eyes.

Otherwise a tremendous set. Wonderful photos of a very pretty young woman.

Let's see... there was a week of business travel (in a snowy Minnesota
April)... and a strenuous week on the inpatient service... I shot a couple of
events at church, and the retirement party of one of my wife's colleagues...

and oh, yeah, our son got married with a fabulous wedding and reception this
past Saturday.

For the rehearsal dinner, I went through my ~20,000 slides from his birth in
1988 to when I got the istD in 2005, and then went through 8 years of digital
pix in LR.  I chose about 450 slides, and shot them with a copy setup
consisting of a light box, tripod, my K-5, my 50/2.8 macro lens, and a remote.
Then in LR I touched up about 100 pix, added about 50 that the bride's mother
sent, and assembled a slide show of the two of them from infancy onwards that
ran continuously through the rehearsal dinner.  Lots of work, but worth every
minute!

Here's one of my favorite shots, of our son with my cousin, 25 years ago:

It's really good to be back; though Thursday morning I have a balloon ride

natives enrolled. Over the past 30 years, the school has greatly
expanded its recruiting of Native American students. The stole worn
by this graduate represents the Native Americans at Dartmouth student
organization.

PESO - Female Ebony Jewelwing

2013-06-17 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Feel free to correct me if I have it wrong but I think I have the species (and
gender) right: Males have the irredescent green bodies, females are brown or
black with white spots at the wingtips.

The males are much more spectacular but I only got a good look at two and it
was windy as hell when the male landed near me so I couldn't get a sharp one.

Then I cranked up the ISO to 1600 for a fast shutter speed (I think this was
1/320th) and narrow aperture (f11) for dof. I think I could have gone f16 here
as the tail is not as sharp as I'd like.

And yes, it is noisy.

Still, it's one of the nicer Jewelwings I've gotten:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/06/female-ebony-jewelwing.html?m=1

Not Mark C. quality but we're working on it. Maybe next weekend I'll head over
to Etobicoke Creek again. I know what I have to work on.

RE: PESO - The Dance Recital

2013-06-17 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Oh man! Memories of my three as they made their way through Miss Ewald's Dance
Academy! She was stern but fair. ;-)

And because everybody and every class got a turn, one had to sit through an
hour and a half of the other parents' irrepressibly cute kids 'til yours comes
on for forty seconds of prancing.

Then another hour of others' kids because it would be rude to leave early.

Those were the days...

;-)

Well that's a fine document of such an event, George. And despite my tongue in
cheek recollections doesn't one feel proud as punch when your little Pavlova is
up there being a swan? As you should because she did GREAT!

Terrific photo!

A snapshot of my cute Granddaughter and a lot of blather about
improving your chances of getting a better photo under poor lighting.

This was taken with my compact point-n-shoot because "professional
cameras" weren't allowed. My guess is they want you to buy the
official photographs.

They don't allow video either. You can buy the official video, too.

Re: PESO: Quittin' Time on Sunday

2013-06-15 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Bruce Cockburn is something of a Canadian icon who made a very conscious
decision to not go down to the US for the big bucks. Very few of you south of
the border will have likely heard of him.

First solo albums he was a granola-crunching hippy folkie:

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V_DK3WKAB0&feature=youtube_gdata_player

That song was from 1971, first album 1968, so he's been around a while.

Then he got into folk-jazz then punk/new wave synth crap, now he's mellowed out
a bit and dabbles a bit in everything.

Still recording/performing, I bet he's put out at least thirty albums/cds in
his long career.

Excellent guitarist, especially acoustic as you can hear above.

Very leftie, very mystical Christian (comes out in some of his earlier music),
into liberation theology, guns, smokes like a chimney, rumoured to have had an
affair with punk/folkie Ani Di Franco (who everyone thought was lesbian until
then); he's a man of contradictions.

I interviewed him when I was in student radio at university during his acoustic
folk/jazz days. Very nice man.

Hell of a musician. I've loved him since '68. Poke around utube and listen to
stuff from all his "eras".

He's very Canadian.

frank

Thanks, Frank!

Deer are much rarer in the forest than in suburban yards. For me the
fence is an important part of the documentary aspect of the image,
showing it was taken on my neighbor's lawn, with the deer fence
preventing them from the reaching the tastiest morsels.

BTW, I'm not certain that the doe is her mother; it may be a baby
sitter. It looked fairly small and thin. There was a second fawn
with the doe when I first encountered them, as I turned into our
cul-de-sac. The three were in the road. The doe and this fawn
continued to cross the street and run up on my neighbor's lawn; the
other fawn panicked, and ran back to the lawn on the other side.

Although does sometimes have twins, that is fairly rare. The mother's
leave their fawns early in the morning, usually with a young doe
watching nearby. The mothers then browse the neighborhood all day,
returning in early evening to collect their babies. I have often seen
from 2 to 6 fawns in the care of a single young doe baby sitter.

We have many deer in our suburban neighborhood -- far too many. The
township has contracted with a local bow hunters' club, to cull the
herd every fall. In two of the last three years, a deer has died in
our yard after being shot with an arrow. There do seem to be fewer
deer around this year; perhaps it is working. About 6 years ago,
there was one herd in our front yard and another in our back yard,
totally 33 deer on our one acre of land.

Frank,
I'm teasing you. It's wonderful shot and great catch.
But I have seen people do things that are making me ill with Photoshop,
like adding the cormorant in post processing.
The new 'content aware' replacement feature really puts me off.
"You have something in the image that doesn't fit - a sign,
a person, a twig, a car - just circle it with the cursor and BANG.
Photoshop will replace it for you with more background."
No need to get it right in the camera!
Regards, Bob S.

Re: paw week 23-dog

There's this really cool "flow" from the pooch's nose up towards the left of
the frame following the open eye and ear and along his back. Meanwhile the
other eye and ear are "closed".

Not explaining it well but it's cool. Rendering is really effective, too; it
emphasizes that "flow".

Wonderful shot!

He was perched on a butt-ugly sheet-metal sign. Really would have ruined the
photo to leave any of it in there I think.

In retrospect I think leaving in the top of his pink legs was a mistake. Just a
distraction, I think. It was such a severe crop I was really leery of going
smaller but now I am rethinking that.

Might try a different crop tonight. Or not; might just work on a new photo.
We'll see.

That's a wonderful set, Bruce! Your patrons must be very pleased with them.

--- Original Message ---

From: Bruce Walker

Subject: GESO The Brawley

So I landed a paying gig last weekend. I was to document the opening
of a new club: show off the facilities, catch the opening night band,
dancing, drinking, and try to snap some of the staff too. Here's a
small set of 12 of the more interesting shots (of the 74 finals
delivered to The Brawley brass):

http://flic.kr/s/aHsjG1qjie The Brawley Opening

All taken with my K20D, DA* 55, DA* 16-50 & DA* 50-135.

The first three staff shots (wait, bar, kitchen) were lit with a used
$30 AF200T in an 18" softbox on a monopod, gelled 1/2 CTO, and wielded
by my able assistant (my wife). I precomputed the flash exposure
assuming a fixed rough distance to the subjects, then set the shutter
to let in ambient room light about two stops below the key. When WB
adjusted for the orange gel, the background goes a blue tint to give
it that cool look.

The west wing and patio shots are HDR, as you've likely guessed --
apologies in advance. I used Nik HDR Pro and it's pretty good, but I'm
not really an HDR kinda guy. I just figured these facilities shots
would benefit from that Marketing Imperative where Over The Top just
isn't good enough. :-)

Most of the dark club dancing and band shots were taken at ISO 3200.
In the past I dismissed that as useless on the K20D but they clean up
nicely with Nik Dfine, so I'm coming to rely on it now. (It even
removes colour banding well so I'm going to go back and revisit some
of my "lost" K100Ds shots.)

Comments welcome, as always.

PESO - Portrait of a Tree Swallow

2013-06-12 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I really didn't like what he was sitting on and most of the background sucked
(even more than what you see here) but it seemed sharp enough to crop in tight
so that's what I did. This is less than 20% of the original frame:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/06/portrait-of-tree-swallow.html?m=1

I'm happy enough with the detail all things considered. And of course I love
tree swallows anyway, pretty little things that they are.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Thanks, Bruce.

It was indeed at Humber. South field. There was a Rugby match at the east field
but the backgrounds were horrible: parked cars and school buildings. Took
photos there as well but no one will see them. ;-)

At least the south field has trees on three sides.

Glad you liked. Appreciate the comment.

Re: GESO: Water Wars

2013-06-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I don't remember how many kids on our block but other was a lot. During summer
vacation Mom would boot me out the door and tell me not to come back until
lunch (or dinner). At about noon or 6pm all the mothers would stick their heads
out the window and yell for their kids to come home for lunch/dinner.

They had no idea where we were, just out with our friends.

We'll never go back to those times, it's a different time. Wouldn't trade me
childhood for the world, though.

Oh yeah, great photos, Paul! I enjoyed them immensely.

Last week was pretty hectic for us. I ran my first marathon, then my wife's
grandfather died, then my mother turned 60 and a friend of mine turned 40.

I am hoping that this week is a bit less interesting.

Anyway, while we were clearing out the room at the rest home, Luke popped in to
keep an eye on us. He used to sleep on a chair in this room as it was nice and
quiet. But now we've taken his chair away and he only has an empty room with a
bed. I feel a bit sorry for him but hopefully his next person will be
cat-friendly.

In the interests of disclosure, my wife took this on her iPhone. I took one
with my phone but I thought hers was better.

I took my K-5 mounted with the M-28/2.8 and my Promaster flash to the
place where I work last night while I was training the new bartender (my
niece) and thought I'd snap a quick photo of our wildly popular shrimp
basket.

K-5, M-28/2.8, f/2.8, ISO 100, 1/160 sec.

I wasn't thrilled with the lens at first, thinking it was really soft.
But, after seeing this shot, I concluded that the problem was on the
other side of the camera. It's not the easiest lens to focus, but when
you get it right, it seems plenty sharp to me.

PESO - Head Badge (Fuji)

2013-06-08 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I know not all of you are bike guys or gals, but this is one of the loveliest
head tube badges I've seen in while:

 http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2013/06/head-badge-fuji.html?m=1

Most high end bikes don't sport head tube badges any more: they're needless
weight and aerodynamically inefficient. They are becoming a rarity, like hood
ornaments on cars.

So when I do see an especially nice one it puts a smile on my face.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Cheers,
frank

Re: OT: Why are Apple such a bunch of twats?

2013-06-08 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
My Android doesn't ask for credit card information when I download free apps.

So despite your reasons, the real answer is "because it's part of the deal" but
since there was no real negotiation of terms ("here are the terms; either agree
or don't use this phone," doesn't really count as negotiation) what it really
means is "because Apple wants to," which is typical of how the public is
treated by mega-corporations.

There.

Rant over.

I feel better.

frank

a pain i agree, but it's part of the deal

it needs your account because it gives Apple proof that you've agreed to the
license (even if free, there's a license), because it sets the DRM so the app
will run on your device, and it gives you the ability to add that app to
multiple devices (e.g. if the price goes up in the future, you can still put
the app on a new phone without charge)

the credit card details have only come up for me when a card is expired

Muslim men wear the fez because a brimmed hat interferes when you bow in prayer
and touch your forehead on the ground. This same thinking makes the fez the
ideal hat for photographers. And when you need to protect your neck, wear a
shemagh.

I had a long day driving home on Monday. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad
as the drive down the previous Wednesday. There was a delay of around
an hour near Waterbury, CT due to a crashed tractor-trailer rig, but
nothing as bad as the shut-down of I-81 on the way down.

It was a splendid weekend. It went by altogether too quickly. On
Thursday Doug Brewer and I went out for a short photo session at Boone
Fork on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I didn't get any new shots for the
portfolio but there were a couple of keepers in the lot. I shot one
and a half rolls of slide film in the 67 so it'll be a couple of weeks
until I see how those worked out.

On Friday Doug and I spent the morning writing our presentation for
the evening (nothing like waiting till the last minute, eh?). But I
got it all wrapped up by mid-afternoon. The Friday night contest pep
talk was great fun. Oddly enough, a few people told us at the end of
the weekend that it really helped them. Who'da think?

On Saturday morning I led a hike up the mountain! Yay! Last year I let
everyone off easy with a short ramble on the lower reaches of the
Profile Trail to shoot some stream photos. Not this year. We went big
and got all the way up to Attic Window Peak. I actually got four
people to come along. Weather was splendid for hiking, too bright &
sunny for nature photography.

As usual I spent Saturday afternoon hunched over a computer loading
contest entries onto the hard drive. But this year we gave the
participants flash drives instead of CDs and it was *much* easier.
Doug and I got the contest judging done on Saturday evening. No
last-minute flail this year!

Sunday was the usual festival of merriment with jokes, jibes and some
award-winning photography. Big fun. If you missed it this year start
planning to attend next year.

I am hopelessly behind 2000+ unread messages...

As it turns out, Pentax lenses on Ricoh GXR-M module work really well,
although focusing may be somewhat tricky. The Novoflex adapter is useful
as it allows to easily open the aperture, focus and close aperture back
ultimately taking the shot :-).

So here goes:

(A 50/1.2)

http://pentax-ways.blogspot.co.il/2013/06/2013-28-pattern.html
(FA 77/1.8 Limited)

http://pentax-ways.blogspot.co.il/2013/06/2013-29-mans-best-friend.html
(Nokton 40/1.4).

Last one I pre-focused by guesstimation and apparently did not miss by
much... I would like to know if the colors on this one look funky on
your screen, as I am still somewhat struggling with color management.

As usual - B&H (not a shop in NYC) comments are sought after.

Thanks.

Boris

It's a dandelion stalk.

Besides they don't sell candy cigarettes anymore. They call them sugar sticks
or something like that. And they no longer have the little daub of red dye on
the tip so's ya can pretend it's a real lit cigarette.

Our youths were lived in more innocent times...

Anyway, thanks for the comment. And thanks to all who looked and commented.

Cheers,
frank

I'm rather behind on scanning and processing photos due to our annual
conference coming up at work, but I did find time last weekend to scan one of
the four rolls of 6x6 film that have been sitting, waiting for me to get to
them. These were made with the Voigtländer Perkeo II 6x6 folder ...

The second I missed the focus by a couple of inches, we probably leaned towards
each other just a hair as I made the exposure, but I like it anyway so, eh? ;-)
It does point out just how shallow the focus zone on 6x6 film with an 80mm lens
is at f/3.5.

Enjoy, thanks for looking! Comments always appreciated.
