I have no idea where this came from (it's one of those "passed around
the Internet" things) and, though it *could* be a Photoshop job, I
suspect it isn't because I know cats well enough ;-)

Our little friend Zephyr died Saturday ant age 17+
http://www.robertstech.com/temp/

I've always been more of a "dog person" myself, but since meeting Lisa
and her cats I've come to the conclusion that it's the owner and how
they raise the pet that makes the difference. Zephyr was the
friendliest, most affectionate cats I've ever known. He used to follow
me around like a puppy at times. He'd had chronic pancreatitis for
years and then eventually became diabetic, requiring twice-daily
insulin injections. He also has asthma, with occasional noisy
mid-night coughing attacks. He had a good, long life and was
definitely "high maintenance" but we still miss the little guy.

I don't have a cat. I don't have feelings one way or the other about
cats. I don't like bad pictures of cats presented as oh its good because
its a cat picture.

I do like good pictures of most anything including cats. Therefore I
liked this one very much, thank you.

Cat Photo

2016-06-08 Thread John

I managed to take photos of Baxter. She won't sit still anywhere but in
my lap, so she's kind of hard to photograph.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/27451840062/

I'm working on my laptop, trying to get it set up with Photoshop CS5 &
Nik filters. The laptop just doesn't have the power to run CS6 & I don't
want CC.

Anyway, just fiddled with the photo to check out whether the Nik filters
worked after I installed them. I figure a cat photo is as good as
anything else for a test.

The photo has Analog Effects to make it look like old film; a channel
mixer red-blue swap to give it a faux IR look and then a high detail
Silver Efex Pro filter applied. I saw a presentation Monday where the
presenter suggested IR photos made a good basis for B&W conversions, so
I figured I'd play with it.

I'm going ahead applying all the Windoze Update files to Windoze 7 to
get it ready to attempt Windoze 10.

That depends. As with dogs, purebreeds have shorter lifespans.
A typical lifespan for an otherwise healthy mixed breed would be
12-15 years, but there is considerable variation even there.
I've had a couple of cats that didn't make it to eight (although
each of those had other medical problems), and three that made
it past twenty (one managing to attain the age of twenty-five!).
Currently my oldest is 15, but she's failing - I don't know that
she'll make it another year. There again, I said the same thing
twelve months ago; time will tell.

It's not that out of line for an indoor-only moggy. Pure bred animals
tend not to live as long, and being and outdoor kitty definitely reduces
average life span, for city kitties, anyway. I've had one live to
nearly 20, another to 17 and a bit, and I've got two 12-year-olds in the
house now.

That's because they are smaller. Seriously (albeit slightly tongue-in-

breeds have, generally speaking, shorter lifespans than smaller breeds.

When I was married we had a Devon Rex who passed on due to congestive
heart failure at about 12. Vet said that was quite normal for a
purebred.

I currently (she's still at my ex', but I hope to have her back in a
month or two - long story) have a mixed breed cat who's 20 (or
possibly even 21 - when I got her in '96 her previous owner said she
was "6 or 7, I can't remember which". She's in remarkably good shape
for her years. Alert, still jumps relatively well, runs about every
so often, even plays once in a while (when she feels like it every few
days or so). Might have a bit of arthritis in her rear hips and her
kidney and liver counts are high (but not shockingly so according to
the vet), but for her age she's doing great.

Longest relationship I've had with a female (who isn't a blood relative)...

This is true, and some of the large breeds are getting decidedly shaky. I
was talking to a trial judge last year who told me that over the past decade
or so, the Great Dane has grown several inches, often as much as 36-38
inches, which is 8 inches over the minimum height standard.
Breeders have done this to win shows, but have done it by breeding big to
big with less attention paid to other criteria.
These big Danes also live a couple of years less than a more normally sized
dog of 32 inches, which is the preferred height.
Some of the larger toys can have very long lives, and Cockers do seem to be
capable of long lives. Our girl who died at 16 was a Cocker crossed with
some sort of terrier.
She was the typical "little brown dog", which seems to have the best chance
of carrying a light genetic load.

Hmmm. That seems strange, to me. Again, going by biology classes a lot
more years ago than I'd really care to admit, I thought that larger
species typically lived longer than smaller species, when considered on
the "gross scale", like hamster versus cat/dog versus horse rather than
hamster versus mouse. As I recall, something about the smaller ones
having higher metabolism or something (e.g., higher average resting
heart rate). Seems like Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) might have been in
the explanation somewhere. :-)

That's because they are smaller. Seriously (albeit slightly tongue-in-
cheek; different species are not directly comparable). But large dog
breeds have, generally speaking, shorter lifespans than smaller breeds.

Hmmm. That seems strange, to me. Again, going by biology classes a lot
more years ago than I'd really care to admit, I thought that larger
species typically lived longer than smaller species, when considered on
the "gross scale", like hamster versus cat/dog versus horse rather than
hamster versus mouse. As I recall, something about the smaller ones
having higher metabolism or something (e.g., higher average resting heart
rate). Seems like Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) might have been in the
explanation somewhere. :-)

Larger dog breeds tend to carry more genetic loading, making them more prone
to things that kill them, such as various cancers and auto immune problems.

The default dog is quite small; 10 to 15 kg. Moving away from that via
selective breeding tends to introduce issues that there hasn't been
enough time for natural selection to remove, especially since people
keep up the selective breeding.

There's a roughly constant number of heartbeats per lifetime in mammals.
Smaller critters have much higher heart rates so much shorter lives.

There are exceptions to this curve; humans live about three times longer
than we "ought" on the basis of that relation between heartbeats and
lifespan. (Heavy selection pressure for cultural transmission,
probably.)

Dogs, though, are skewed by the selective breeding; the default dog
lifespan is probably whatever Asian pariah dogs (which are probably
pretty close to the default dog) manage.

On average cats live two to four years longer than dogs. IIRC the

The dog's ancestors are an animal of about 30 to 40 pounds, much loarger
than that you start seeing system failures early. Too much smaller and
you have other problems. Pretty much like humans. It takes a lot of
time for all the kinks to work in evolution if you the failures aren't
immediately fatal. I haven't seen a lot of outsized cats. Maybe we
don't have quite as much control over feline breeding, or cats have a
less diverse gene pool. Then again maybe it's just that after a cat
reaches a certian size a human looks more like lunch to a solitary
hunter, as opposed to a pack leader to a cooperative hunter...

2009-12-04 Thread Ken Waller

We've had a number of cats & 1 dog since the late 60's.
The longest lived cats were our pure bred Abyssinians (Abu & Wasmale) who
both lived to around 19 years 9 (which the vets told us was longer than most
cats they were tending to at the time - 1988). Our most recent cat,
(Samantha) we inherited from my mom 15 years ago. We think she was around 3
years old in 1994. She died this spring - so approx 18 years old.
Our experience with dogs was limited to 1 pure bred Malamute - Bear - who
lived for 13 years. At around 105 lbs he was considered a big dog. The
attending vet thought he was old for his breed.

BTW none of these animals actually died on their own, we kept them comfy
until near the end when we finally had the vet euthanize them.

I've owned 6 male & female Malamutes in the past 35 years, usually two
at a time, alternately overlapping. All but one lived to be 13 + years
old.

One female wandered out of the yard when she was 12 and could hardly
get around. She plodded out into the street and committed suicide, I
like to think. Of the others, only one had to be put down. The others
all died with a howl, a long yell and a whimper. Either heart attacks
or brain aneurisms according to vets that knew us.

The one that had to be put down had become unbalanced by a huge
(probably) benign growth one one side, and (I surmise - was not there)
fell down a flight of stairs and hurt his back or neck bad enough that
he couldn't get up without someone lifting his rear end up and
allowing him to steady himself. He'd plop back down after a few steps.

All were loving and loved animals.

As are the two I have now, a 3.5 yr Canaan Dog, and a 2 yr mixed breed
who looks like a small Canaan. I expect them to have long lives, being
close to pariah dogs.

Sorry for you & Lisa's loss.

Zephyr looks like a Seal Point Siamese - Yes?.
Our two lived long also - around 20 years.

Nice to hear a ' dog person' has good thoughts & memories of a cat.

I'm sory about your loss, Mark. He reminds me of one of my cats, who
died last 28th of December, mine was smaller in size (it was a female),
but Zephyr's eyes and face are nearly identical to my cat's, she was
called Dona. We still miss her a lot.

Is Zephyr the guy I met? He *was* friendly by cat standards. I'm sure
