Thanks!!! Some light falloff, not so extreme and could be accepted to the kind of situation I'll be possibly facing - the need to use exactly the same "longish" lens with digital and film cameras, regardless of the FOV variation. With a change of over > 15% it should be readily visible. Finding some overlapping-on-this-angle-of-view tree branches at various distances gives very visible field-of-view changes in the finder as the focus is moved from the near branch to the further branches. Going from infinity down to the minimum focusing distance with the manual focus ring with the lens set at 300mm, I get, stepping the focus ring down through the feet markings (∞, 30, 15, 10, 7, 5.5, 4.6): smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED300.0 mm292 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED300.0 mm284 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED300.0 mm268 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED300.0 mm260 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED300.0 mm260 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED300.0 mm252 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED300.0 mm252 mm Note that the 292 is with manual focus and the focus ring turned as far as it would go toward infinity; the DA 55-300 doesn't quite get to 300. Going UP from the minimum to infinity on the metric focusing ring (1.4, 1.6, 2, 3, 5, 10, ∞) with the manual focus ring with the lens set at 55mm, I get: smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED55.0 mm64 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED55.0 mm64 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED55.0 mm63 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED55.0 mm62 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED55.0 mm60 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED55.0 mm58 mm smc PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED55.0 mm56 mm So it looks like depending on distance to the subject the actual focal length varies by 40mm in the DA 55-300 at 300, and by 8mm at 55. Margus' DA* 60-250 pic showed 196mm as the actual distance to that implausibly pretty random tourist with the lens set at 250mm. I'd be very curious what the closest-focus-to-infinity change was; 250-196 = 54mm, which is considerably larger than the 40mm difference for the DA 55-300 at 300mm. It makes me wonder how close the 60-250 gets to 250. -- Graydon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I need to get out with it more though. Sometimes the bird is just too darn far away. One of the things I really like about the mirror lenses is the (lack of) mass; I can hand-hold the 800. I don't do much better than 20% usable, that way, but it makes a number of opportunistic shots possible. As the high ISO sensor performance improves, I think the f8 and f10 solutions for very long lenses will get much more usable than they used to be, too. Shake reduction has to be based solely on image magnification, which in turn is directly related to actual focal length. I can see two explanations: The first number is the 'focal length' set on the lens, and the second number is the true focal length in use (calculated from set focal length, focussing distance, and known properties of the lens). The second number isn't really "SR Focal Length" - it's something quite close to that, so the ExifTool author called it that. As I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a deal with Pentax to get the RAW specs, all the values are reverse-engineered, and are best-guess descriptions. (I know that was the case for the running exposure count, because I'm the person who reverse-engineered that one). There's a fairly easy way to check the first hypothesis; mount the lens on the camera, set it to 300mm focal length, and see if the image size (or field of view) in the finder changes as you shift the focussing. Graydon, I've never seen shake reduction focal length before. The variation with the DA 35mm macro makes me wonder. Is it trying to figure actual length of the lens from focal distance used? Macros can change a lot depending on focal distance. This would change the actual length of the lens for shake. Regards, Bob S. It has the interesting property of listing all of the EXIF information, rather than the plausibly interesting or useful exif information. (Although I can see a use for camera temperature.) So one can get both "Focal Length" and "Shake Reduction Focal Length". So if I run exiftool on a downloaded copy of your lovely sample JPEG, I get: 8:40 K-7 % exiftool -FocalLength -SRFocalLength 60-250.jpg Focal Length: 250.0 mm SR Focal Length : 196 mm It's quite clear you had the 60-250 all the way out at 250mm; "Focal Length" is 250mm. If I chew through 2009's photos on my hard drive: 8:35 2009 % exiftool -T -LensID -FocalLength -SRFocalLength */*/*dng > list (Get the Lens ID, the Focal Length, and the Shake Reduction Focal Length from each of the dng files below the current (2009) directory, get this information in Table format, and stuff that in a file called "list".) Then sort the list, removing duplicates: 8:40 2009 % sort -u list > sorted_list This gives me a list of Lens, Focal Length, Shake Reducation Focal Length, separated by tabs. Since tabs are doubtful creatures in email, I've replaced all the tabs with 8 spaces and cleaned up the columns a bit. I was initially curious about what the different numbers implied about the optical design of the 60-250; I'm now (having extracted all those numbers) finding myself curious about how shake reduction actually works. This does provide an explanation for how improving shake reduction (which is what Pentax said the 1.03 firmware for the K20D did) could improve auto-focus performance, if the Shake Reduction has to decide what SR Focal Length is *first*, and then autofocus has to try for a lock. For me, with FF 28-85 is normal, so under 28 is short and over 85 is long. With aps digital, change the numbers to <18 as short and >55 as long. Now if your talking long TELE, it would be over 200 for FF or over 135 for APS. Re: Interesting DA 60-250mm test shots
IF, the camera's firmware did not recognize the lens, it would ask for a focal length to be put in for SR recognition. IF the user put in 250mm, that would be the focal length reported by the EXIF. The lens, however, might have reported a focal length of 196 mm when the shot was taken, if that was what it was zoomed to. Only explanation I have. If it wasn't, there would be no reason to renovate. Careful lens purchases, OTOH, can actually gain in value. This makes them a real investment. I don't get to hide expenditure from my wife, either - she's a professional bean counter (green eye shade and everything), so she handles all the household finances. When she found out that there was a new Pentax being announced next month (shortly after my birthday) she let me know that there was no way I was getting a present from her on my birthday - I think she's resigned to the fact that the third digital body might be close to arriving here. Eventually, you reach a tipping point where they just can't tell if a lens is new or if they just didn'notice it, and a short time later, they just stop noticing. When I had three lenses, bringing a new lens into the house was difficult. I no longer have that problem.
