I would try to be there! My schedule: this weekend is out (Easter). All of next week and the weekend of Apr 30 are ok. Meg and I will be going to Whitefish Point and vicinity May 2-4, so that period is out for me. Weekend of May 7 could be ok. Footnote: sometime in the next few weeks I need to do a round-trip to KC. Could be next week, could be right after we get back from Whitefish Point, could be a bit later. If there were a firm date for a Michigan (+ Chicago etc.) gathering, I should be able to work around that. 2nd footnote: my brother is in the Cleveland vicinity. If we head to NW Ohio, I may be able to get him to join us with his new K-5 . . . stan On Apr 22, 2011, at 6:24 AM, Bill Sawyer wrote: That brings up an idea - anyone interested in a trip to Point Pelee or the Crane Creek/Magee Marsh/Ottawa Wildlife Refuge birding area in Ohio? Re: I really hate this guy :)
I would agree with you, Paul, but that is not the context of the discussion (in the PF thread). It is not simply a display of a photographer's imagery. It is done in the context where it is implied that This is what the 645D can produce for you (that a lesser camera cannot). If the 645D is only a part of the story in that production, then it is a bit misleading. You may get the impression that the 645D has a dynamic range greater than what it has, if you are judging it on the basis of HDR images that are not labeled as such, on the web. I would love to see the same scene shot at the same ISO with the 645D and the K-5 and processed with exactly the same workflow, to be able to see the differences between the two images. I suspect that, like the film cameras of old, you don't really see a big advantage for the 645D until you make a print of a certain size, when the 645D's 40MP images shine over a lesser MP image. There are many reasons. At least a couple of them has to do with the optics in the 645 system. The sensor is not alone. :-) For example at Svalbard I brought my K-7 with a DA*300/4 in addition to the 645 system, and 100% comparisons of shots with the DA*300/4 and the 645A*300/4 showed me there's more information in the 645D recording at the pixel level. I believe the sensor design (eg. lack of anti-aliasing filter) contributes to the perceived sharpness too. Either way, when I crop out 1000x1000 pixels from a 645D file and a K-7 file, obtained with equivalent focal lengths, I'm left with more detail in the 645D shot. And I used to think the DA*300/4 was pretty good. I do not own the K-5. Jostein 2011/4/21 Tim Bray tb...@textuality.com: Really, Jostein? Re: I really hate this guy :)
If you look at the seascapes where the horizon is broken by foreground (eg. #3), you can see how the foreground gets progressively darker upwards. This guy is making extensive use of gradient gray filters. But quite successfully I'd say. :-) One image I really like for its technical quality is the one from Pfeiffer Beach with the sun peering through the hole in the rock. Metering is easy enough to compensate, but the lack of reflections and blooming is humbling. Jostein 2011/4/20 Stan Halpin s...@stans-photography.info: There were a few of these that I quite like. And there were many that almost made me want to gag. E.g., the 1st, 2nd, 3rd . . . Pretty much any of them with the sun as an element in the photo. Either with ND filters or with post processing he was darkening the sun and/or lightening the sunlit foreground to a point that was way beyond natural. It is just not possible to have a reflection that is brighter than the object being reflected. The shots that didn't involve such gimmickry were quite nice. It seems that, like with most breakthrough products, there is great potential for evil as well as good. stan On Apr 19, 2011, at 8:46 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: oh my -- quite wonderful ann Krisjanis Linkevics wrote: http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-medium-format-645-6x7-645d/139755-my-final-thoughts-645d.html kris -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- http://www.alunfoto.no/galleri/ http://alunfoto.blogspot.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

2011/4/20 Tim Bray tb...@textuality.com: What's focus stacking? -Tim When you can't get enough DOF with one shot, you can take more shots with different focus plane, and stack them together in software, using only the parts in focus from each exposure. The technique originated with photomicroscopy, I think, and is very useful for ordinary macro too. It is usually achieved by moving the subject rather than the camera. With landscapes it's different of course... :-) Here's a little videoclip from a guy who made a contraption for moving a macro subject in controlled steps. Auto-Align Layers takes care of the slight differences in size due to focus breathing, etc. Luckily the DA* 50-135 doesn't seem to suffer much from that. -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Steve Desjardins -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

So stacking shots may be more tricky than in the case of macro. But for landscapes you can still get a very long way by calculating the total DOF and focus manually. Besides, I get the impression that this guy use wide-angle lenses (a 35mm on 645D = a 18mm on APS-C). Assuming that's what he used for the deep perspective shots I believe f/11 will give him enough DOF for any of them. The cake was lit with an AF-540FGZ on wireless in an 18 softbox. (I used a 2nd 540 to blow out the wall behind the cake.) Despite being f/8, the DoF was only about 25% of the depth of the cake. There are several of the guy's imagery that look HDR to me. Not the overblown kind of HDR that passes for HDR these days, but HDR as it is supposed to be done. I'm not looking at the page right now, but the Golden Gate bridge photo is the most obvious HDR to me. The chain in the foreground is clearly lit by a strobe. I think it is more than a little bit deceptive for him not to explain some of that. Makes one think the 645D is capable of doing what he shows right out of the camera. It is more a testament to his post-processing skills than 40 megapixels (at least as far as web resolution images is concerned). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

The shooter obviously had to at least do some burning and dodging to get this effect and quite possibly employed filters, but the resulting look is much like the human eye and brain might record with normal correction of the scene. And the overall result, to me at least, is very pleasing. Manipulation of values is a valid photographic tool. Take Ansel Adams scenics for example. And the reality of what a camera can capture without manipulation isn't exclusively valid. Paul It is just not possible to have a reflection that is brighter than the object being reflected. Re: I really hate this guy :)
I am ok with manipulation, and in my own novice way I do work on my own images. I just think that some are too extreme in that they go beyond what the human eye would be capable of seeing. A hyper-realistic effect where the key elements are exaggerated to the point that makes them unreal. YMMV. I just went back through the set looking for specific examples, and found that I was a bit more sanguine the second time through. But it still just does not feel right to me to have a bright reflection off the rocks when the sun is so dim. I think the shots where he did not use dramatic lighting as an element are quite impressive. stan On Apr 19, 2011, at 9:26 PM, Paul Stenquist wrote: On Apr 19, 2011, at 9:00 PM, Stan Halpin wrote: There were a few of these that I quite like. Either with ND filters or with post processing he was darkening the sun and/or lightening the sunlit foreground to a point that was way beyond natural. I disagree. I find the first thee shots superb. The shots that didn't involve such gimmickry were quite nice. It seems that, like with most breakthrough products, there is great potential for evil as well as good. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

(De-lurking for another blather) I don't have any saliva left in my mouth, so I can't drool over the photos any more. Geminee! Is that all I need to be a good photographer? Just another camera? Re: I really hate this guy 'smiley face'
Yeah, if I just had that 'better camera'! And how long has the camera been out, 6 months? I might need a time machine too. Did you look at where those pictures were taken? He's got pictures from all the best places I've been or heard of. That's got to be another $10K on travel and motel rooms, plus his FULL TIME, BEST EFFORTS for the last 6 months. I don't get enough keepers to produce those results in that time. Regards, Bob S. Still, damn. I wonder what his keeper rate is. Probably alot lower than you think.
