Wish I could be there, but 09 Jun was my deadline to be out of my old house.

But I am now "moved in"; for values of "moved in" == most of the boxes
are here & I'll be finding stuff as soon as I can open them ... I hope

Also still have to move most of my furniture out of the POD. I'm just
realizing this house is only half the size of my old house.

Its hard to beat GFM for its incredible photogenic areas. I do think
however, that Big Bend National park in southwest Texas is pretty
incredible, with its crazy scenic vistas, wildlife, and amazing dark
night skies. Arches national park in Utah is also mind blowingly
beautiful, as well as other parks in Utah. All of these sites
however, are going to be hot for the summer and they would be much
nicer in late fall.

Re: gfm npw alternate

2021-04-07 Thread Stanley Halpin
Scott, thanks for looking into this. I am interested in joining the party but
unsure whether we’ll be able to make a commitment. Our major
flood-damaged-kitchen restoration project is now finally under contract with
the guy saying “maybe May or June we’ll get to it…”

I was a member of PATC many decades ago, Meg and I met through PATC, I was
Chair of the Mountaineering Section, then also VP of PATC for a year and then
Treasurer, Meg and I maintained a 3 mile stretch of the AT, etc. So staying in
one of these cabins would be like coming home! Most of the cabins are open to
Members Only and when we were actively involved Members had a head start on
getting reservations even for the Public cabins.

An alternative I had thought of is the Watkins Glen State Park in New York. I
know camping is available, maybe cabins? And for sure many motels in the area.
But what made me think of the Glen, apart from the obvious photo opportunities,
is that I attended my 50 Year High School reunion there a few years ago. The
main event was a catered dinner held in a large building with plenty of space.
If that is of interest I could see if any surviving classmates know what the
arrangements were…

Re: spotmatics and unexposed film and gfm, oh my

2019-12-17 Thread John
It's an idea to keep in mind if you ever have the opportunity to go back and try
to scan those old 110 negatives again ... or find you need to scan more old
negatives some time in the future.

A piece of "construction paper" (any paper slightly thicker than the negative)
with a cutout might work to make the job less frustrating. Position it on the
scanner bed, lay the negative in the hole and place the glass on top to flatten
the negative.

I have the Epson V750 scanner with the wet mount system, but I looked up
Godfrey's ANR glass. Looks like it might be less hassle than the wet mount.

I bookmarked the page so I can go back and get that glass for my scanner if I
need to ...

We were unable to scan the

When I was in school we just used a piece of glass to hold paper flat while
exposing it. I wonder if that would work to hold negatives flat on the
scanner bed?

Maybe cut out an appropriate sized hole in a piece of black construction
paper to fit the 110 negatives and hold both down with the sheet of glass?

Re: spotmatics and unexposed film and gfm, oh my

2019-12-17 Thread John
Yeah, that's why I suggested a piece of "construction paper" with a cutout for
the 110 negative to support the glass. I thought maybe mat board would be too
thick & I couldn't think of a good descriptive name for another thick but not
too thick paper ... maybe a heavy card stock?

Since scanning all of his mother's negatives appears to have been a one-time
thing I wanted to keep the cost of the additional "equipment" required to scan
those 110 negatives as low as possible.

Speaking of 110 - way back in the back of my refrigerator is a mixed block of
UN-used 110 film cartridges (wrapped in plastic & inside a Ziploc bag) that
includes maybe half a dozen Kodachrome-64.

Never going to use them now, but I did use a number of them with the Pentax
Auto-110 over the years, and I still have some of those slides. Their mounts
have the same outside dimensions as regular 35mm slides, so I have no trouble
scanning them with the Coolscan-IV & Vuescan.

My film scanning rig for medium format and Minox is a glass plate hinged over a

position on my flat panel light box. This nets about a 0.8mm high channel
through which the film can be drawn The light box's panel is not glossy so I
capture the negs with the emulsion side up, preventing all Newton rings, and
flip them for correct orientation in image processing. The captures are all
made using raw mode on the camera which nets the greatest flexibility in tonal
capture and editability. With my usual copy camera setup (Leica CL and one of
two or three Leica R lenses that I find useful) this nets a 24 Mpixel image (at
the limit, depending upon format proportions and/or how much 'slop space' I

be quite good enough for most any size prints or web presentations I have in
mind, even if it's nowhere near what the Nikon Super Coolscan 9000ED scanner
could resolve from a 6x6 cm negative (and more than it could resolve from a
Minox negative!).

I can use the same setup for 35mm film formats but there I find the Nikon Coolscan V ED
is still a better choice, since it makes handling lots of frames semi-automatic (set up a
six frame strip, then say "scan" and walk away for 20 minutes while it works
and outputs both VueScan TIFF and raw files at the same time). It's not much different
time-wise for setup, just a bit more time consuming to do the actual scanning with the
carriers I have. One key thing is that with the Nikon I have the APS film scanning
carrier, and it's the only way I can scan APS film without destroying the film cassette.
For the little APS film that I have to scan, it proves to be a plus to see it retrieved
nicely.

For Minox and Disk Camera formats, the negatives are indeed teensy so I go to
the Leica Summicron-R 50mm or Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm fitted to the bellows and
have to rack out a 2.5x to 3x magnification for a decent capture. Holding the
Disk film is pain, I made a little jig with a small C clamp to hold the film
from the center hub, but luckily the disk itself is rigid and doesn't need to
be flattened or clamped. I only did Disk once or twice, my brother had one of
those cameras, and it is really very difficult to get any quality out of those
tiny negatives. Minox negs are only a tiny bit larger but the MInox lenses have
all be of superlative quality and the film is much, much easier to handle,
making getting decent results out of them far easier.

Fun fun fun... I have the last rolls of both Minox C and Hasselblad 500CM film
sitting on my desk to scan today. It's somewhat amusing: the aggregate film
area of a roll of 36 exposure Minox film is about equal to one frame from the
Hasselblad... The whole roll of Minox frames is only 32 square mm larger than
one 6x6cm film negative. :)

Holding negs down with a piece of glass works after a fashion, but you usually
get some moire. Special glass or plastic made for that purpose works better. I
think Epson sells it.

Ive got the V500 - acquired on the recommendation of you list guys a
while back -- very happy with it.. except I've managed to get a couple
of scratches on the glass :-(  from putting things on it to scan for
ebay that I shouldn't have I guess. for 35mm negs and chromes I can
avoid the scratched spots

Some long-obsolete Epson model was my first choice way back when, but
everyone was out of stock so I bought the 8400f. Wow, was that a big
mistake. So far, the VueScan software is far superior to the Canon
software. I'd still rather have something else, but for $90 I can
nurse it along for another year or two.

Interesting. I tried the free version to try & revive an HP2400 scanner.
It wouldn't work properly (parts of scanned pages were blank) so I
contacted Mr Hamrick who asked me to conduct a couple of tests & forward
the resulting files. He informed me that the scanner had croaked! Hard
to get service like that today.

>Flatbeds are ok, preferably with 35mm and 120 holders.
I have Epson V500 with those adapters (no longer on the shelves).
And I am a happy user of VueScan.
It is simply too good for a business model from the customer's point of view.

I also have a Nikon Coolscan V ED, a dedicated film scanner which is
no longer supported.
It does a better scanning of 135 but it can not take 120.

Check if that scanner is supported byVueScan (it probably is). Great

spotmatics and unexposed film and gfm, oh my

2019-12-09 Thread Scott Loveless
It's me again, Margaret.

My basement is full. Not "there's some stuff on the shelves we don't
need and I'd like to clean them off to make room for the new Christmas
decorations" full, but "tiny, narrow paths that don't quite get me to
where I need to be, and if I don't come out in fifteen minutes call
the paramedics and hope they have the jaws of life" full. If you'd
asked me about my SP500 I'd have responded in the affirmative, but
without a clue which box it was actually inside. Nevertheless, I
found it the other day, along with a 135/3.5 Super Takumar and a
55/1.8 SMC Takumar. (I do like the feel of a Super Takumar lens.)
The battery was surprisingly not dead and the operation of the
mechanical parts smooth and effortless. The knurled bit on the end of
the film advance lever is possibly one of my favorite features to be
found on any camera. Which leads me to film. I need some.

Voilà! The very next box I opened was full of film. Some of it was
exposed, but the vast majority was unexposed 35mm. Lots of slide film
and not an insignificant amount of b And another unexposed roll of
Kodachrome. (Sigh. I find one of these every once in a while,
crammed into a coat pocket, or a shoe box.) It's all past its best by
date, but I think we're in business.

A certain person, who shall remain anonymous, but who's name rhymes
with Spark McRoberts, suggested I drag the black and white lab to GFM
one more time. (Some of you may recall that I protested the photo
competition's switch to digital by souping and then scanning my own
film on-site.) Plans are to be there this year with enough chemicals
to make your average state trooper call for SORT backup.

Which leads me to film scanners. I need one. The Canon
8400turdbucket is no longer supported. They say the previous drivers
should work with DOS10, but they don't. Flatbeds are ok, preferably
with 35mm and 120 holders. I'm open to suggestion.

See you in May/June. Don't say you weren't warned.

Splendid gallery. The water shots with moss are excellent. GFM is

No, noise wasn't an issue (shooting at ISO 100). It's just that the
strong sunlight coming through openings in the trees above created hot
spots that would otherwise have spoiled the shot. By combining 5

Ah, thanks. I meant that noise would be an issue if you underexposed by

On Saturday morning we did the annual hike to Shanty Spring Branch to
practice some stream photography. Lighting was suboptimal: Clear skies
meant we kept getting hot spots that threatened to ruin most photos. I
got around it by taking 5 shots (around 20 seconds exposure each) and
combining them using the "mean" function in Photoshop. Worked out
pretty well.

forever? Is there a shelf-life for the judges of the NPW? Or will you just
carry on until the Good Lord stops you?

Yes, the weather was pretty nice this year. Some storms threatened but
never quite materialized: John Weber and I hiked up MacRae Peak on
Friday but turned around without going on to Atic Window because it
looked threatening. Still got some good photos. On Saturday morning we
did the Profile Trail out to Shanty Branch to shoot some stream
photos. And I got the pano photos I posted just before departure on
Sunday.

Re: GFM Nature Photography Weekend

2019-06-03 Thread Doug Brewer
It was great to see you and chat, John. Looks like you had a full
weekend, and that's all we can ask for.

I got back around 7:30 last night, slept in this morning, and am now in
a somewhat catatonic state, which is typical for me after the NPW. It's
the price I pay for the manic levels of energy I expend on the mountain.

With luck I'll be there in August and I hope to see you again.

On 6/2/19 11:54 PM, John wrote:
I'm home. This was the first year I didn't have to rush back to get
Baxter out of kitty jail ... I mean the pet hotel.

Didn't win any prizes, so my record for not taking the contest too
seriously remains unblemished.

Didn't do a whole lot of nature PHOTOGRAPHY, but it was an interesting
weekend for seeing nature. While I was driving up a Pileated woodpecker
flew across the road right in front of me. It was there and then it was
gone, but it was plainly visible; best look at one I've ever had. Every
time I've encountered them before, they were always up in a tree and
hiding around the other side of the trunk. BIG woodpecker. No hiding
this time.

Sunrise Saturday was a bust. Heavy gusts & thick overcast caused them to
close off the top of the mountain, including the trail-head for the
Black Rock Nature Trail (EASY, 1 mile trail with good view of the
Parkway from Grandfather Mountain). I'd used The Photographers Ephemeris
to figure out where I was going to shoot sunrise from & was going to try
out the 15-30 f/2.8 to see if I could image stack the foreground with
the "Waning crescent 4.9%" almost new moon that rose one hour before the
sunrise.

So, once I found out there wasn't gonna be no sunrise with an almost new
"Waning crescent 4.9%" moon, I figured I'd head down to McDonald's at
Banner Elk & get a cup of coffee to jump-start my mental processes ...
except it was closed when I got there. Doug later told me it caught fire
& they're having to rebuild it. I ended up with a cup of gas station
coffee from the mini-mart across the road.

Coming back to the mountain, I spotted a flock of wild turkeys out on
the edge of McCrae Meadow with the dominant Tom making a display. I
managed to get a couple of photos before someone else stopped & decided
to walk up on them to get closer ... with predictable results.

On the way back from Banner Elk, I saw a sign for a Draft Horse pulling
contest, so I bagged the contest & went over to take some photos there.
I'd never seen one before.

Headed back to the mountain around 4:00pm to turn in my one photo. They
extended the submission deadline until 5:00pm this year.

Went through Banner Elk again, and just before I got to the country club
entrance on NC 105, a bear cub came down the hill from my right and ran
across the road in front of me. Again, I got a real good look, but no
time to reach for my camera.

Even if I hadn't been fully occupied with driving, I deliberately put
the camera out of reach when I am driving so I won't be too tempted to
do something too stupid.

After this morning's presentations & issuing certificates to the
winners, I took a walk through the habitats before heading home. They've
got a new Elk habitat. And it looks like they've got plans to expand the
museum complex. The drawings they have in the brochure make it look like
it's going to be on the other side of the auditorium where the picnic
shelter is now.

Took a different route home, partly to see if I could remember one of
the old short-cuts I used to use when I was running service for the
alarm company & needed to get between two clients who weren't connected
by an interstate (or even a primary road).

Nailed it & had a nice sunset along the way. "Fields of Gold" and all
that, so I got to see a nice bit of nature this weekend, even if I
didn't get to photograph all that much of it.
