Rick, that is a splendid gallery. Well worth the walk! Nothing like that
around here - some in the old cities like Cape Town, Bloemfontein &
Pretoria. Even the Kruger Park is disappointing at the moment. The bush
is still so dense after the very high rainfall we have had this season.
Even an Elephant is hard to find a mere 20m off the road & the dry
season water points are abandoned with so many pools all over the place.

Either way.

It's generally more convenient for me to set up Mail for each of my accounts,
no matter what service they're hosted with, on my iPad/iPhone and on my Mac as
well; either option is easily available.

> - will the ipad support firefox

There is a Firefox browser available on iPadOS, but I have never used it. I'm
happy enough with Safari as an internet browser.

Again, you can use a Gmail specific app, or you can create a Gmail account in
Mail. Your choice.

On macOS, the functionality of manipulating directory structure on local or
external storage is handled by the Finder. On iOS and iPadOS, the Files app
allows users to do the same, in a somewhat more specific (and manual) manner;
file system manipulation functionality is built into apps on these operating
systems to manage their private, secure directory storage in a more automated
manner.

The Files app is included with any current installation of iOS and iPadOS, and
it can be obtained free of charge from the App Store with any iPhone/iPad as
well. A screenshot of the Files app listing on the App Store:
https://www.flickr.com/gp/gdgphoto/o3ZQXQ905s

Files can be used to create a directory structure per whatever your needs might
be, either locally on an iPad or iPhone, or on external or iCloud storage.
(Yes, you can connect an external drive to iPad/iPhone presuming you have the
correct cable and/or adapters for your devices.) Since I do my photo
organizational work on my macOS system, and use the iPhone/iPad for photo work
in the field on a rather more casual basis, I have not set up a photo directory
structure that mimics my macOS system directory structure but it's certainly
possible (and easy) to do so. Here's what Files shows of my iPad Pro 11"
directory structure at present: https://www.flickr.com/gp/gdgphoto/0310mtvb53

As you can see, the default folder organization is being defined by the apps I
have installed and use. I can easily define another directory tree for photos,
either locally or on iCloud or external drives.

Inside an app like Photos, you organize photos into Albums to achieve the same
thing from a use perspective. I generally use SnapSeed for quick edits … it's
fast and easy. For more extensive work Photos used in conjunction with Raw
POWER is an excellent image editor and so is Affinity Photo. Both Raw POWER and
Affinity Photo run on iPadOS, iOS, and versions are available for macOS as well
if you want to use the same software on all your systems.

I generally use Lightroom Classic to do my photo work on macOS, mostly since
I've been using it since it went to Public Beta 2 or something like that in
2005. I haven't used the mobile version of it at all. When I do work on the
iPad or iPhone, I move the original and the finish files to my Mac and bring
them into Lightroom Classic for management and, occasionally, additional work.

Just as a comment, I have a relatively heavy photo load when I'm busy,
and I push my devices pretty hard. Much of my decision path was colored
by that, and I went with what I thought could handle it. I do not know

For email, I just use Mail on my phone and haven't decided if I will do

fine, too.

There appears to be a Firefox app for iOS, yes.

Same for Gmail.

Re: OT Laptops and photo editing

2023-03-06 Thread Doug Brewer
I recently ran into the same set of decisions, having decided that my
2012 MBP was too decrepit to handle things as well as it used to, and I
needed something for travel and location work that could handle some
culling and light editing until I could get the files back home to my
workhorse computer.

Guess I should point out that I have never particularly liked editing
photos on a laptop, unless it was at home and hooked up to decent
monitors, so I dragged my feet for quite some time on the decision
because the home setup was already sorted, my venerable 2009 Cheese
Grater Mac Pro moved to a support role for an M1 Max Mac Studio, running
two color matched 24" monitors for the heavy lifting and a third display
for email, browsing, etc.

So last week I grabbed up an M2 iPad Pro for the road work. It has
enough screen space for such, and I can get some of the stuff done with
the Apple Pencil before I get back home to my tablet and pen and more
serious work.

to your questions:

like Godders said, RAM is handled differently on the new rigs, so the
answer isn't always more like it used to be, but still more than 8GB
would be better.

M2 over M1 is "it depends."

I never do serious photo work without calibrated monitors, and though
laptop screens have gotten better regarding color and holding a
calibration, I still have a prejudice against them, so I'd look into
interfacing whatever you get with either your iMac screen or finding
another monitor to hook up. And yes, a Spyder or other tool.

Figure out which ports you need.

See above regarding monitors.

I haven't used a mouse in ages, since I got a Wacom tablet. My ancient
Apple Wireless keyboard still works.

Re: OT Laptops and photo editing

2023-03-06 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The iPad Pro is my most used computer. It handles anything I need with respect
to email, banking, internet usage, word processing, et cetera. It does a fair
job with image editing as well, using Photos with RAW Power, SnapSeed, and
Affinity Photo. The keyboard folio case provides an excellent keyboard and
folds up around it, protecting the Pad as well. The 11" diagonal model has a
super-crisp and easy to see screen, and you can use external keyboards,
pointing devices, and even displays with it (including wired ones using the
appropriate adapter). The 11" inch model is also just the right size to fit
easily in most any of my camera carrying bags other than the very smallest.

My primary use of the desktop system is to run Lightroom and other legacy
applications that I have way too much data and information invested in to want
to migrate to anything else unless I absolutely have to. :)

Re: OT Laptops and photo editing

2023-03-06 Thread Larry Colen
This is an interesting thread, thanks for starting it.

There’s a company in my area that sells used macs, I recently upgraded my 2009
mac pro to a 2015 trashcan, and now have a 2015 15” MBP for my mobile photo
needs and when I was given a broken 2016 13”, I traded it for a 2015 13”.
Long story short, IMHO if you are buying used, 2015 is the sweet spot of price,
performance and upgradeability. After that, things started getting soldered
down.

In general, processor needs (and performance) have not increased nearly as much
as RAM and drive requirements. Also, it seems that the big advantage of Apple
silicon is with RAM on chip, bus speeds are that much higher. On top of that, I
have not seen any indication that camera raw files are going to be getting any
smaller, whether or not someone needs a 75MP raw file to post a 1920x1080 JPEG
on facebook.

In short, I agree with Ralf, prioritize RAM (and drive space) over processor
speed.

As to screen size, I briefly had a 13” MBP a few years back that I tried to use
for processing. I returned it after my first photo trip, it was just too small
to be useful, and that was before my eyesight took a sharp decline. As to
whether to get an MBP or a mini, you can use a laptop as a desktop machine a
lot easier than you can use a desktop machine on the road. Every so often I’ll
do a photo gig on the road when I want to at least look at things, and likely
do some processing, and it really helps to own at least one laptop that is able
to handle that.

FWIW, my work setup is a laptop with external keyboard and two desktop
monitors, and in the office I treat the laptop like a desktop machine.

My home photo setup is two 2560x1440 displays, one horizontal, one vertical. I
think that my next setup is going to be a single, large (36”?) 3840x2160 (quad
HD basically) display. If you pair that with an open laptop display that would
be a great combination, but you don’t even need the second display unless you
want to put all of your menus over on that.

I do more or less everything on my iPad and iPhone, including banking, email,

connect it my TV when I do use it.

However, I’m not as heavily into photo editing as many people, and being
colourblind I don’t rely on my colour vision for anything, so I don’t really
even need a calibrated monitor.

My main worry is if the desktop crashes or get infected that i have
something to carry on with my different emails and banking, until a new mac
can be bought, if the ipad will do all that i may just go that route and
forget the macbook for the time being

Thanks for the comments Godders, I am also thinking of upgrading my ipad

My needs may be better served with a decent current ipad instead??

Re: OT Laptops and photo editing

2023-03-06 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Can't answer all of your questions, but I'd go for an Apple silicon machine
nowadays … it's where the future is headed in Apple equipment. I'm planning to
upgrade both my Mac mini (2018 3.2Ghz Intel 6-core i7) and my iPad Pro 11"
(2017) to latest generation M1/M2 equipped models later this year.

- The M series CPUs utilize RAM differently from the Intel generation systems
and are more efficient about it, but for any serious photographic work I'd want
either the 16 or 32 Gbyte RAM models anyway. It lends more future-proofing to
the setup.

- The M2 is a higher performance chip. Better or worse is hard to evaluate
because it depends upon the context of measurement.

- If you want to do managed color, yes you need a tool to calibrate and profile
the display.

- battery … yeah a laptop has one. ??? I'd never depend on battery life for
doing serious photographic work.

- amount of ports and an sd card slot … I haven't looked yet, but look and see
that what you're interested has the number of ports and slots you need before
buying.

- An iMac can be used as an external display, but it depends on year of
manufacture, what hardware features your specific iMac has, and what version of
macOS it has on it. This will take research, you might want to discuss it with
your service provider.

- I, personally, want a 27" display for my photographic work. I can work on
smaller screens for quick stuff but I want the screen real estate to handle
having all the various palettes and controls of Lightroom or other image
processing software open and instantly available when I'm doing anything
serious. I don't like to use multiple displays simultaneously, I just want one
big display.

- Your existing keyboard and mouse should work fine. I've had the same Magic
Keyboard and Magic Trackpad through two-three system generations already, no
reason a Magic Mouse would be different. Of course, using a mouse, you give up
many of the touch-based control capabilities of a trackpad, but that's up to
you. I stopped using a mouse more than a decade ago.

I ran with a MacBook Pro as one of my personal computers, and another as my
work computer for the last five years of my career at Apple. But I never used
my personal computer anywhere but on my desk since all of my mobile computing
needs were better served with the lighter, smaller iPads starting about 2010.
As a result, I sold the last MacBook Pro I owned personally to a friend, and
when I upgraded my 2012 Mac mini, I bought a 2018 Mac mini. The performance
difference between the two mini systems is astounding … and the performance
difference between the 2018 mini and the latest M2 mini is even greater. I
could not see the point of buying a laptop since I never carry one anywhere
anymore.

I replaced my magic mouse and keyboard a few years back the mouse is fine
with El Capitan but the cordless rechargeable keyboard would not
communicate with the computer but it is plugged in, my hope is that the

If your eyesight has done like mine as I've gotten older, you'll want
the bigger screen of the 14".

According to a quick Google the 14" MacBook Pro (14-inch 2023) has 3
"Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports" and a HDMI port.

M1 is fine. Invest the difference in more RAM.

As some of you may know, I have been on a two week photo-safari to Botswana,
the Kalahari desert and Okavango Delta in October 2022.

It was an exhausting but VERY rewarding trip, with over 12000 images and a few

About 98 percent was shot with just the K3 III and the DFA 150-450mm.

I finished an overview webpage today that has a photo-gallery and a short video

I thought I was going to organize even more and prune and scan for
several years.. it isn't happening..
but when I was still sending stuff to stock agency back in the late 80's
and early 90's I had an illumitron set-up
for duping slides that produced good dupes of the chromes I found it
hard to part with but was a hell of a lot of work.

what I did recently jsut for an index was project a few carousels worth
of slides from trips and photo them with the K-5
so I could quickly go through them to see what I felt was scan worthy..
but I'm really not up to more than that'

Re: Organizing photo archives (was Re: Old Shutterbug articles)

2022-12-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
A friend of mine retired with similar thoughts, tried, got too lazy. I
convinced him to package up all his old slides and negs, send them to
ScanCafe.com. He did, paid a good bit of money for the work, and they did a
great job. Of course, his innate laziness and sloth means he now has a huge
library of completely unedited, unorganized scans on his computer which he'll
get a Round Tuit to deal with somewhere in the next eon.

ugh.

I have my old libraries of slides and film. I scanned them all once, years ago,
but scanning tools and image processing methodology has improved so
dramatically since then that I might just re-scan them all. I'll review my old
scans and, if they're good, that'll be the end of it. Otherwise I'll make one
more pass at it … the film is degrading and they'll never get any better than
they are now. Once I have a format setup vetted, I can scan up to about 100
exposures per hour for any given format. Scanned, sucked into LR Classic with
some keywords for organization, metadata saved to disk … I figure there's about
a month's worth of work to do if I put in two/three hours a day at it.

What I'll then do with the library … No idea. I have no idea who might be
interested in it in the future. Maybe I should just create a compendium book
with all of it in there and file a copy with the Library of Congress in case
some future photo researcher wants to see what one nut case with a camera (or
twenty…) did with his spare time and cash… LOL!

It's an old German counting rhyme for childrens' games.

Eins zwei, Polizei,
drei, vier, Grenadier,
fünf, sechs, alte Hex,
sieben, acht, Gute Nacht.

The 'alte Hex' is an old witch. The rest should be self-explanatory.

The scene shows the afternoon before a football (soccer) match between
arch-rivals FC Cologne and Bayer Leverkusen. The Leverkusen fans arrived
by train and were escorted to waiting trams which were driven straight
and without stopping to the stadium. To avoid any contact with the local
fans and to make sure that the trams arrived in one piece they were
accompanied by a dozen police cars each.

On the day this photo was taken, Cologne lost and at the same time
dropped out of the German premier league.

A number of trams had to be re-glazed afterwards...

I retired a couple of years ago with the same intentions. After a few
half-hearted first attempts then putting everything in a cupboard for 18
months, I now have a process I’m fairly happy with.

Once you’re happy with your set-up you’ll probably be able to raw scan each

you can concentrate on editing the best images.

I haven't even got round to thinking about scanning the bulk of my 35mm film &
slides.
I do have some scans done (from my PZ-1p or MZ-S) when I had an HP PhotoSmart
scanner.
Most of those were done when I was shooting part-time for Motorsport.com; I
would
typically shoot anywhere from 4 to 12 rolls during an event, get them developed
and
printed, and select a small number of frames to scan in and submit. I did this
for
a few years, doing as many as 12 events in a year (although usually only half
that),
so I've got quite a few rolls of film (or slides) to look through.

Besides that, though, I've got a box containing a lot of other stuff - some from
my student days (before I got my first Pentax) shot with a very basic 35mm
camera,
some with my film Pentaxes (SP-II, MX, ME, ME Super, Super Program, PZ-1p,
MZ-S).
I haven't really looked at any of that stuff for 20 years or more.

I've also got some family photo albums I've inherited. No negatives - just
prints.

Of course before I can do any scanning I'm going to need to get a scanner. While
the high-end Epson 800 looks nice, it costs a lot more than the 600. It also
gets
mixed reviews. I haven't started looking around seriously yet, though - I'll
get
the digital/digitised stuff sorted out first before opening that can of worms.

OT: World's Best Photo-Op

2022-07-12 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Brooks Falls in Alaska's Katmai National Park is the best place in the
world to watch brown bears feasting on salmon as they swim upstream to
spawn.

My wife, my son and I visited there decades ago; it is still one of the two
most memorable travel experiences of my life (along with watching the
flowing lava at Kilauea at close range). They have a wooden platform about
15 feet off the ground, overlooking the falls, for observing and
photographing. When we were there, there were always 3 or 4 professionals
with huge lenses that spent all day at the overlook. (I have a few images
of my own, but none of great quality, as that was pre-digital, and my lens
was not that long.)

Now there is a webcam so all can enjoy the spectacle:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mphg2feuAPo

(Note that one can watch live or go back to view the activity earlier in
the day.)

Katmai is in my view the most under-rated national park in the system. The
park and preserve encompass 4,093,077 acres (6,395.43 sq mi; 16,564.09
km2), which is between the sizes of Connecticut and New Jersey. Most of the
national park is a designated wilderness area. In addition to Brooks Falls
with its abundance of bear, one can hike through the Valley of Ten Thousand
Smokes, a 40-square-mile, 100-to-700-foot-deep (30 to 213 m) pyroclastic
flow. The park includes 18 individual volcanoes, seven of which have been
active since 1900. Oh yes, there is excellent salmon and trout fishing,
moose and beaver sightings, and eagles, eagles, eagles.

The national park has limited capacity, to preserve the natural conditions
and for safety reasons.. When we were there, sll the cabins in the park
were full, so we stayed at an inn in King Salmon, and flew in and out by
float plane each day for three days. Now, reservations are required for
entry into the park, and are fully booked a year in advance. Still, I
highly recommend Katmai if you are able to go there. It is the experience
of a lifetime.

Enjoy the webcam, in any event!

The longest lunar eclipse in 580 years will be visible early Fri. morning,
Nov. 19. The eclipse will turn November’s “Beaver Moon” a reddish hue,
hence the name, “Blood Moon.” You’ll have to get up early to see it in all
its glory, though, as it will peak between 2 and 4 am on the east coast of
the US.

However I cannot store my DNG RAW files on Flickr so these I keep on

US$60 per year is US$5 per month. Considering how many *thousands* of image

private access; JPEG and raw format—and how effectively the site works for both
image presentation and web sharing photos to a half-dozen different photo and
other forums, I consider that cheap: a bargain.

Generally, you get what you pay for. Free stuff is often quite without any

On reflection, that Flickr.com monthly charge is less than I spend per day on
an espresso and a snack at the local cafe. Maybe I should start making my own

Re: Photo Hosting Site - Flickr or.....?

2021-10-05 Thread Steve Cottrell
Thanks Igor - that’s really useful info.

I’ve signed up with Flickr and with a free account I get to upload 1000 images.
That’s absolutely fine as I just want to do some quick galleries of
boatbuilding stuff, a hundred or so.

I do have Amazon Prime and I didn’t know about the photo hosting so will take a
closer look at that too.

I saw Google did it but it needs access to my photos and contacts and God knows
what, which I’m not prepared to do. I don’t backup in the cloud, I backup
manually locally so they can suck it!!

Thanks again mate

The free limit on Flickr is 1000 photos. I have been deleting some
"unnecessary" posts to keep below 1000 but it looks like I will either
have to go Pro or perhaps try a second free account with a different
e-mail address. Pro is $59.50/a which is SAR900/a - quite expensive.

Thank you Alan.

I’m pretty sure that I used the Bigma with all of the photos except the
Turkeys. The Bigma is a bit large to conveniently carry on my bicycle.

I had a real dilemma today on my bike ride. I was making reasonable time and
the same flock of turkeys was crossing the road, I was actually quite close to
some of the chicks, and was tempted to stop and pull out the camera, but I was
also fairly certain that had I done so, the chicks would have hurried off into
the bushes while I was still fumbling to get the camera out of the bag.

> And what about the Blondes Brunettes?

Blondes Brunettes? I’m afraid it’s been a while since I’ve photographed any
birds in British colloquial, or chicks in American colloquial.

spectacular in these photos, but I did get a few decent ones, particularly of
the young juncos.

Unfortunately, I’ve gotten no good photos of the family of hawks that live
across the river, I’m almost getting to the point where I wish they’d shut up.
