Maybe even a little beyond the red dot which is calibrated for an IR wavelength

Ilford SFX200 or Konica 750. The infrared sensitivity of a DSLR sensor extends

Re: IR Photography

2023-07-13 Thread Larry Colen

https://www.eplastics.com/search?keywords=infrared

I bought a sheet of the above to make flash filters so that the flash would
only transmit IR.

Last night I had a chance to come home to get my miata, I was hoping to have
time to cut it up into pieces to mail to anybody that might want some, but
things came up (Like needing to get a car smogged and registered) and I haven't
even started packing and still have an 8 hour drive ahead of me. If people are
interested in some chunks, let me know and I'll see if I can cut a piece to
carry back in my miata. Otherwise it is a lot less expensive than the thin
film filters.

It can be a lot of fun to use an IR strobe and photograph a scene where some of
the elements, like a sign, are illuminated, then color balance out the IR
magenta to black and white.

Some of my best shots are here:

Re: IR Photography

2023-07-13 Thread John Sessoms
I watched a video on InfraRed photography that emphasized the utility of
shooting when the light is NOT so good; too hot, too harsh, to specular
in the middle of the day.

Even before Covid, I was having problems getting out and shooting in the
golden hours & IR looked like something I could do with the time when I
WAS able to go out & shoot.

With digital you can get some kind of immediate feedback so it's not
like shooting film. I hope it's going to complement my other
photography, not replace it.

AND I think some of the apparent problem with the focus is the softness
of in camera JPEG conversions. AND ALSO ... I'm at the very beginning of
the learning curve.

Further, I've re-read the explanation about (665nm) IR. I now think it
cuts off the color in the blue & green part of the spectrum leaving the
spectrum ABOVE 665nm - oranges, reds & invisible InfraRed ...

Anyway, I'm still learning.

luck!) which made a tripod mandatory - still have the very same tripod.
Manual guesstimate timing on "B" with a cable release. Focusing was a
nightmare because the filter was so dark I had to focus without the
filter & then slide it in and adjust to the IR mark on my Supertak 55/2
(which I still have!). Pity I didn't think of Larry's sticky tape astro
method to lock the focus. Only 2 or 3 shots out of the 48 were even on
the verge of acceptability so that was the end of my adventure.

Yeah, that bit me when I took my K20 to burning man after having it
repaired.  When I got home and started to process the photos I
couldn't figure out why they wouldn't adjust properly.
First thing I've noticed is it doesn't seem to work very well if
it's not bright sunlight. Test shots I took indoors don't show ANY
image unless I boost the ISO way high & use high exposure
compensation.

So you have it blocking all visible light?
"IF" I understand what they did, they replaced the regular IR filter
with another filter that passes IR below 665nm so that I get visible
light PLUS the upper end of the IR spectrum ... ???
You *should* be able to get shots indoors just as you would with a
standard camera.

IR is supposed to be really good for harsh daylight (shooting in
the middle of the day), so I took it out from 1:00 to 3:00 today to
photograph a field of sunflowers that are just coming into bloom.

I had it at F8 using the SMC Pentax-DA 1:1.8 50mm lens it seems
like everything is really soft (out of focus?) except for stuff out
on the horizon.

I've got to go out and make another test, but anyone got ideas?
You'll need to focus based on the live view, which is what the
sensor sees, either that or manually focus based ton the distance
scale and the little red dot that shows the IR focus point.  The
autofocus system focuses for the visual spectrum, but IR focuses
differently.

H? The K20D has live view?
Hmmm, that’s an issue.  Maybe take some test shots and look at the
preview screen zoomed in.

If you photograph under LED or fluorescent light there should be no IR.

Hmmm, that’s an issue. Maybe take some test shots and look at the preview
screen zoomed in.

If you photograph under LED or fluorescent light there should be no IR.

IR Photography

2023-07-12 Thread John Sessoms

I had my K20D converted to Amplified Color (665nm) IR.

Had my first chance to test it out today. Didn't notice they'd reset the
default output to JPEG, so I'm going to have to make another test outing.

First thing I've noticed is it doesn't seem to work very well if it's
not bright sunlight. Test shots I took indoors don't show ANY image
unless I boost the ISO way high & use high exposure compensation.

IR is supposed to be really good for harsh daylight (shooting in the
middle of the day), so I took it out from 1:00 to 3:00 today to
photograph a field of sunflowers that are just coming into bloom.

I had it at F8 using the SMC Pentax-DA 1:1.8 50mm lens it seems like
everything is really soft (out of focus?) except for stuff out on the
horizon.

I've got to go out and make another test, but anyone got ideas?

I think, in the latter case, that if Elon were good buddy enough to fly me
there, I'd just as well stay and enjoy the quiet. Presuming a couple years stay
in an appropriate habitat and enough interesting videos in the library, of
course.

I'd be happy to work for him as Greeter for the next expeditions... :)

Yes there are. The ones I am familiar with are made by DJI. They have a
couple of heavy lift drones. I suspect the one you would be looking at
would be their 8 rotor drone, or a similar one from another company.
The camera of choice for drone enthusiasts seems to be the Canon 5D, though
now that mirrorless cameras have taken over, it's probably a Sony that is
favored now.

Re: Pentax drone photography?

2021-05-27 Thread Paul Sorenson
Correct.  In the US if a drone is used for recreational purposes and
weighs over 250 grams (.55 lb) it must be registered with the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA).  If a drone is used for commercial
purposes it must be registered regardless of weight. The cost for either
is 5 USD for 3 years.

In addition, commercial operations require you to be a licensed drone
pilot so if you take photos or videos with your drone and sell them,
you're supposed to be licensed.  The FAA takes a broad view on what is
considered commercial.  It might be something as innocuous as posting
drone photos or videos on a blog that gets a little income from sharing
ads.  Obviously they're not going to be scrubbing through blogs and web
sites looking for violations but there are folks who don't like drones
who complain and then the FAA will look into it.

Volcanoes are fascinating! Thanks for sharing.

I have visited Kilauea, on the Big Island of Hawaii, on four separate
occasions. I have twice ben able to see the lava actively flowing,
once flowing into the ocean. Once I was able to get so close I
could fgeel the heat on my cheeks, but they park rangers keep visitors
farther back now. It is an event not to be missed if you have the
opportunity to watch a live volcano, In Iceland, on Hawaii or elsewhere.
Just avoid the explosive ones.

Photography Lesson - Pentax

2020-10-18 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hidehi PDMLers

A friend of my wife's has been after a 'digital camera lesson' for some time,
and she finally came around last Friday. I had been dreading it, but actually
it went very well. She's a musician (violin) and artist.

She's in her 60s and many years ago had used 35mm cameras and even developed
her own film, and printed. But this new-fangled digital was giving her a
headache...

I pinched a few pics of the interwebz and printed them out, breakdown of a
mirrorless and DSLR, f-stops, ISO sensitivity etc - I knew she had a DSLR and
was prepared for her to produce a Canon - but no! Out came a Pentax Kr

The lesson was about 90 minutes and started with basics, progressing onto
exposure and how crucial the lens choice was and so on. The one thing that
threw her was the mode dial up top. So we went through the whole PASM thing,
and I explained what each meant. She was very enthusiastic and despite my
providing some primer sheets, she took notes in a booklet. I had my Olympus Pen
F on hand, and of course then sensor sizes needed explaining.

When we got onto how aperture affects the photo, I retrieved my K50/1.4 and put
that on her camera (which only had an 18-55 kit lens) and let her have a play -
she was amazed that the lens worked and illustrated perfectly the concepts
discussed using the live preview facility. She was astonished to learn that you
can pick up a 50/1.7 for peanuts off eBay - and apparently spent the evening
scouring for some bargains.

I also had my MX at hand, and that was great for showing how the shutter works,
stripped of lens and back. So much better to have the hardware in front of you
to illustrate theory

That's all really. Found the Kr to be a usable camera, perfect for her. Some of
the menus were a bit confusing, but got there. And the rubbish up there on the
mode dial! Get rid of it all and just have PASM (although it took me a minute
to figure out that Sv was not 'shutter priority' haha - the Pentax obviously
being 'PATMS')

Work picking up a bit for me finally, and been shooting some more sailing
things, got a 30 minute doc about a gaff-rigged cutter built in France in 1913
called the Jolie Brise coming out soon, so will post a link in case anyone's
interested. All shot on a (new to me) Sony PMW-F3.

Meanwhile, more boat building tomorrow! Filmmaker, photographer, and also now
rigger, cabinet-maker, plumber and electrician.

Needs must...

Cheers all

cotty

The most important tip IMO is to get out early or late in the day for the light.

Good reminders here.
My most used lens for fall photography is my 300mm, f4.0 FA.

photographs,
go out and take photos.

Yeah, an email went out to the NPW team members a couple of days ago.
We'd all been expecting it.

I'm hoping things are settled enough for the Camera Clinic weekend to
run in August.

Well, I was expecting that.

The good news is this increases my chances of coming along next year.

Let's get this ball rolling please Scotty and Ceeb!

Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend 2020 CANCELLED

2020-04-01 Thread John

I got an email from them this morning. Tickets usually go on sale April 1.

Dear friends,

Regrettably, due to safety concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19 (novel
coronavirus), Grandfather Mountain has canceled the 2020 Nature Photography
Weekend, previously scheduled for May 29-31.

This was not an easy decision to reach, but we feel it's a responsible one,
as the safety of our guests and staff comes first and foremost.

Grandfather Mountain voluntarily closed March 15, following suit with
executive orders from N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper (https://governor.nc.gov/) , the
latest of which directs North Carolinians to shelter at home
(https://files.nc.gov/governor/documents/files/EO121-Stay-at-Home-Order-3.pdf)
for 30 days, March 30 to April 29.

During the temporary closure, the park will maintain a minimal level of
essential staffing on site, including animal habitat keepers, maintenance and
security, while strictly adhering to guidelines and recommendations from
Centers for Disease Control (https://www.cdc.gov/) , the N.C. Department of
Health and Human Services (https://www.ncdhhs.gov/) and local officials
(https://www.apphealthcare.com/) .

As of now, the 2020 Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic
(https://grandfather.com/event/grandfather-mountain-camera-clinic-2020) is
still scheduled for Aug. 15-16, while staff works on alternative methods of
providing a Nature Photography Weekend experience to our NPW family. Keep an
eye on your inbox and www.grandfather.com (https://grandfather.com/) for news
and updates.

Thanks for your patience, support and understanding. In the meantime, we hope
you and yours are doing well and keeping safe. We look forward to seeing you
all back on the mountain in the near future.

Sincerely,
Frank Ruggiero Director of Marketing & Communications Grandfather

Mountain Stewardship Foundation

It's a shame, because I really look forward to seeing some of y'all when I get
there (actually, I look forward to seeing ALL y'all, but only some of you come
to the Grandfather Mountain NPW).

Can't get to the talk, but the book looks interesting, thanks, particularly as
it also covers humanitarian and aid work, which is quite rarely discussed in
photography.
