Re: Fairly large earthquake
Just having breakfast now. The media reported 20 aftershocks overnight but they are only the ones that registered enough for Geonet to list them (looks like the cutoff is about magnitude 3). We're still getting small tremors quite regularly, quite a bit of variation so they might be 5 minutes apart or 15-20 minutes. The tremors made it hard to get to sleep as the experts say that there's usually at least one aftershock at one magnitude less, within a couple of days. So it's hard to sleep thinking there might be a magnitude 6 just around the corner. It's strange really, we got through the 7.1 really well and a 6 is 1/10th the size so my brain says I shouldn't have any reason to worry. I thought this morning it'd be interesting to go and have a look at the fault once I find out where it is. Geologist on the radio now just said there was a 3.5 metre lateral displacement along the fault. He also says it's either a new fault or a blind fault where it's only just reached the surface. So they didn't even know about it before. Interesting stuff. My boss texted me this morning to say his house was pretty much ruined, he lives in an area near the beach that saw some liquefaction. He's going in to the office to see what state it's in. Not sure if the police will allow him in as it's within the area that's cordoned off due to the potential danger from falling masonry which is going to get worse when the wind picks up later today. I chatted on Facebook to one of my colleagues whose house is close to the city centre. Their next-door neighbour had a VERY lucky escape. He was in this bed just seconds before this fell on it. I've told her to send it to the press. http://www.multi.net.nz/quake/bed.jpg Thanks to everyone for your thoughts I know a few of you have been here so let me know if you have any particular place or building you want me to report on and I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Re: Fairly large earthquake
OK I'm checking in again. We still don't have power (using the laptop and 3G modem again). We went to my partner's work this morning to check for damage as they have a lot of hazardous chemicals. It was all fine but her office had power so I was able to recharge my cellphone. The roads were fine but quite a few intersections are out. I'm pleased to report there are no reported fatalities (yet) which is pretty impressive considering the size. Its been downgraded to 7.1 now but I'm surprised the damage wasn't a lot worse considering how close it was. Only a couple of reported injuries so far, caused by falling bricks. I've heard one close escape so far (who happens to be one of our customers at work). Family are all OK which is good. I've been up and taken the damaged chimney down to the roof line. I replaced the broken tiles while I was up there. I took photos for evidence so when we file our insurance claim we should get the final repairs covered... eventually. We're being encouraged to not get out and travel so I don't have photos, I might post a couple of our chimney later. http://www.stuff.co.nz/4095395/7-1-earthquake-photos These photos make it look a lot worse than it is. The central city is pretty much closed down due to the danger of falling masonry as there are a lot of old buildings. The building codes are pretty good here and the only damage we've seen is chimneys. It's lucky the quake struck outside of business hours. I work in the central city so I'll see if I can take some photos during lunchtime on Monday. Assuming our building hasn't fallen to bits, in which case I'll take photos of that. We're still getting occasional aftershocks, mostly small tremors. You tend to hear them coming so it's not so bad... but it wasn't too much fun on the roof :) On 04/09/2010, CheekyGeek cheekyg...@gmail.com wrote: With power out, I'm trying to figure out how he posted to the list. Re: Fairly large earthquake
Another update: the power is back on at our house. Now I can use my own computer with its dodgy battery... Getting a bit tired now after the 4:30am alarm. I think I'll need a snooze. I am really glad the weather is nice today. I was planning on riding my new bike today but have called that off :( Dave On Sep 4, 2010, at 10:52 AM, CheekyGeek wrote: With power out, I'm trying to figure out how he posted to the list. Dave, Glad to hear you're OK. Pictures of downtown Christchurch look bad. Stay safe. Regards, Bob S. On Fri, Sep 3, 2010 at 6:51 PM, David Mann d...@multisport.net.nz wrote: OK I'm checking in again. Now /that's/ freakin' amazing, after a quake of that magnitude. Yes I'm as amazed as you are. It's a real testament to the quality of the infrastructure here. The scariest moment of the quake was when the power went out. I think the reports said that electricity was cut to about 75% of the city. The street across the river from us was still on. The sewer system is still offline and I know that's fairly antiquated so it'll be interesting to see how long it takes to get that sorted out. A small section of the road is a bit weird outside our house, it makes a scrunchy sound when you walk on it and it feels quite soft so I suspect the ground underneath is a bit soft. I don't know if there was subsidence, liquefaction or maybe it's related to the leaking water pipe just up the street. Glad you're OK and the damage appears to be (comparatively) slight. I'd hate to think what Atlanta would look like after a 7.0 quake. I'm guessing it'd mostly resemble the seven hills of Rome, or something like that. :-) Our building codes have been very good for quite a long time for this very reason. It looks like the major damage is limited only to older buildings that predate the standards. I think most of the buildings in Rome would predate European settlement in this country! Keep save, Dave! Boris On 9/3/2010 8:47 PM, David Mann wrote: Hi all, Not sure if we'll make worldwide news but we've had a 7.4 earthquake here. It struck during the night and was pretty effective at waking me up. It was close and shallow, 30km away and 33km deep. http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/3366146g.html We're OK, only minor damage. A couple of bits of broken glassware inside, and we lost the top of one of our chimneys which broke a few tiles on its way down. Most of the city has lost power and a water main burst here so there's no water either. I expect that'll be sorted out before too long. I'm sending this from one of our laptops (with the good battery) and a cellular USB modem. Handy things to have. But I might not be checking my email often for a few days. We're getting small aftershocks every couple of minutes (some less small than others!). I'm still shaking a bit myself!
